Chelsea FC eye Earls Court for new stadium amid internal strife

Chelsea FC is exploring the possibility of relocating from Stamford Bridge to a new site in Earls Court, fueled by the club’s need for a larger stadium.

Currently, Stamford Bridge can accommodate 42,000 fans, but redevelopment efforts are plagued by limited land availability, prompting the club to seek alternatives in west London.

This potential move comes at a turbulent time for Chelsea, as internal conflicts between co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly have intensified. A significant point of contention is the stalled progress on the stadium issue, which has exacerbated existing tensions between the two.

Chelsea has engaged in discussions with Transport for London (TfL), a key stakeholder in the Earls Court development, about the feasibility of the relocation. However, the club faces competition from The Earl’s Court Development Committee (ECDC), which envisions a “mixed-use development” for the site.

Despite the competition, some industry insiders suggest that the ECDC’s proposal might be deemed prohibitively expensive, potentially clearing the way for Chelsea’s plans. The Blues have already prepared preliminary designs for the Earls Court location, and Jason Gannon, Chelsea’s chief executive, is reported to have had constructive meetings with both TfL and the real estate firm Delancey.

As discussions continue, the future of Chelsea’s stadium remains uncertain, with the club weighing its options amidst a backdrop of internal discord and competing development interests.

  • Fans urge Moses to reconsider international retirement

Football fans in Ebonyi have urged Chelsea FC of England’s Victor Moses, to reconsider his retirement from the national team.

NAN reports that on Aug. 15, Moses announced his international retirement from the Nigeria national football team, much to the shock of anyone and everyone involved.

The fans interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki on Sunday, were reacting to Moses’s snub by Coach Mauricio Sarri in the team’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, a streak witnessed since the start of the current season.

Bright Igboatu, Former Chairman of Chelsea Fan Club Abakaliki branch, noted that Moses was misguided by thinking that retiring from the Eagles would make Sarri look his way.

“The problem is not due to Moses’s commitment with the national team but because Sarri is employing a system different from that of former Coach, Antonio Conte which made the player tick.

“Conte employed a 3-5-2 formation which made Moses combine both defensive and offensive roles at the right wing but Sarri employs a 4-3-3 formation which features players on both the right-full back and outside right positions.

Jude Omagwe, defunct Jasper United of Onitsha player supported this assertion, arguing that featuring for the national team would even enhance Moses’s chances of breaking into Sarri’s main team.

“Chelsea’s blistering start to the season would make it difficult for Sarri to drop any play from this group that have adapted to his new system.

“Matches in the Europa league, Carabao and Federation Cups in which Moses and other fringe players can feature, are not played regularly as the focal attention is the premier league,” he said.

Chika Nwangele, Ebonyi United of Abakaliki Captain advised Moses to realise the impact playing for the national team could make in his dire situation.

“Luca Modric of Croatia has recently overthrown Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to emerge Europe’s best player and this was due to his scintillating performance at the world cup.

“Moses should realise that established players such as Cesc Fabregas, Adreas Christensein among others are facing similar situations as the national team affords him the opportunity of being match-fit,” he said.

Samuel Chukwuemeka, A Soccer historian, recalled that the national team afforded several Nigerian stars not playing regularly at their clubs, the avenues of being relevant.

“The world acclaimed ‘USA 94’ team for instance, had several players that had no clubs or were not regulars at their clubs during the world cup qualifiers and competition proper.

“Late Uche Okafor and Stephen Keshi fell out with their clubs management while Peter Rufai, late Wilfred Agbonavbare among others were not regulars,” he said.

Mrs Chidinmma Akanno, Youth Activist and football enthusiast however urged Nigerians to continue praying for Moses to reclaim his first team place at Chelsea.

“I am optimistic that by the time Moses starts playing regularly for Chelsea, he would be motivated to reconsider his stand of retirement from the team,” he said.

  • Chelsea treating me like a criminal, says Costa

Chelsea treating me like a criminal, says Costa

Diego Costa has accused Chelsea FC of treating him like a “criminal”, in a forthright newspaper interview which will deepen the breach with the Premier League club.

The striker is seeking a move back to Spain in the transfer window.

He has not played for Chelsea since the FA Cup final in May, following which he claims manager Antonio Conte sent him a text, telling him he was not in his plans for the new season.

Costa was interviewed at home in Brazil on the same day Chelsea lost their opening Premier League game to Burnley and said he was refusing the club’s demand to return to play with the reserves.

“They want me to be there training with the reserves. I wouldn’t be allowed access to the first-team dressing room and I would have no contact at all with the guys,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I’m not a criminal! I don’t think it is fair after all I have done to be treated like that.”

The Brazilian-born Spain international, who joined Chelsea from Atletico Madrid in 2014, said if the club did not allow him to move before the transfer window he was prepared to see out his contract unpaid in Brazil.

“I am open to being a year in Brazil without playing, even if Chelsea fine me for a year and don’t pay me.

“I’ll come back stronger. If I was in the wrong, I’d go back now and do as they say.

“I want the deal with Atletico resolved this month. My idea would be to go to Madrid, train there, get in the best physical shape and be ready to fire ahead of the World Cup.”

The situation is complicated by the fact that Atletico are currently banned from signing players in this window although a loan deal would be possible.

Costa’s relationship with Conte appears to have broken down although the Brazilian accepts the Italian “is a good coach”.

Last week Conte said there was “no news” on the Costa situation but earlier this summer said the “situation is closed.”

  • Terry to leave Chelsea at end of season

Terry to leave Chelsea at end of season

Chelsea FC captain John Terry will leave the club at the end of the season after more than two decades there.

He is their most decorated individual, with four Premier League titles, one Champions League, five FA Cups, a Europa League and three League Cups.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that he has made 713 Chelsea appearances since his 1998 debut — 578 as captain.

“I feel I still have plenty to offer on the pitch but understand that opportunities here at Chelsea will be limited for me,” the 36-year-old Terry said.

Centre-back Terry, who has scored 66 goals for the club he joined as a 14-year-old, has made just four Premier League starts this season.

He is the club’s third highest all-time appearance maker, behind Ron Harris and Peter Bonetti, and holds the club record for appearances as captain.

Terry, who made his debut for Chelsea as a 17-year-old in a 1998 League Cup match, has gone on to score 40 Premier League goals over 19 years.

He has played almost all of his career at Chelsea, other than six loan appearances for Nottingham Forest in 2000.

“I will, of course, always be a Blue and am desperate to end my final season as a Chelsea player with more silverware,” said Terry, whose team have a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

“I’ve always been conscious that I depart at the right time, in the right way, and I feel that the end of this season is the right time for the club and I.”

Terry, the club and Premier League’s top-scoring defender, is one of just five defenders to have won the PFA Player of the Year award.

He retired from international football in 2012 after winning 78 England caps and signed a one-year contract extension with the Blues in May 2016.

“I’m eager to carry on playing and so will be looking to continue with a new challenge,” Terry added.

“Words cannot describe the love I have for our football club and our amazing Chelsea fans. You mean the world to me and I will never forget the incredible journey we’ve been on.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “He will always be held in the highest regard by everybody at Stamford Bridge and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.”

  • Footballing world mourns Keshi

    Footballing world mourns Keshi

Football lovers, fans and umpires around the world on Wednesday mourn the shocking death of former Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, popularly known as the Big Boss.

Following the announcement of Keshi’s death, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) said: “His influence on the pitch cannot be underestimated. He enjoyed a successful club career in his home continent before exporting his talents to Europe, starring in cup and league-winning Anderlecht sides and endearing himself to Strasbourg fans in France with a stunning long range goal against Rennes that helped promote Le Racing to Ligue 1.

Throughout his stellar playing and managerial career, ‘Big Boss’ certainly allowed fans, team-mates and his own players themselves to dream. Tributes from around the footballing world have poured in for Keshi, after his tragic and sudden passing at the age of 54.

Chelsea Football Club of England acknowledged the coaching impact of late Keshi in making great players like Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel, both football players at Chelsea FC. The English club took to its social media platform to say: “All at CFC are saddened to hear of former Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi’s death. He worked with Mikel & Victor Moses

Similarly, Fatima Samoura, first female FIFA’s Secretary General appointed on 13 May 2016, expressed her great shock at the news when she posted on her social media handle saying:

Brown Ideye, Nigeria’s central striker who plays his football with Greek club Olympiacos FC was not left out as he laments the tragic departure of  Big Boss from planet earth. Ideye in his social media post said: “This is one of the saddest days of my life?. I will never forget the happy days, you coached me. RIP Big boss?? pic.twitter.com/mqNhFhFzK3

Other football bodies and individuals around the world as follow:

FIFA further said in its article that it is Keshi’s international career that will perhaps evoke the strongest memories though. As well as playing his part in that memorable AFCON title in 1994, he helped guide the Super Eagles to their first FIFA World Cup™, playing five games on the road to the USA before featuring just once at the finals (as captain) due to injury.

“With many African countries looking for coaching experience from outside the continent to lead their countries at major tournaments, Keshi was a beacon of hope for coaches from the mother continent. Not only was he the first Nigerian to lead his country to the AFCON title, he was the first African coach to lead a team to the Round of 16 at a World Cup, achieving that feat at Brazil 2014,” the world football governing body noted.

The social media is agog with messages of condolence after news of Keshi’s death stunned the global footballing community.
