  • Chevron’s gas production hits 500 MMscf/d

    Chevron’s gas production hits 500 MMscf/d

    • Oil production averages 233,000 bpd

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) is advancing its efforts in gas utilisation and commercialisation with its current ready –for- use natural gas production standing at 500 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d).

Company sources told The Nation that the firm’s natural gas production per day, has  exceeded the 500 MMscf/day.

The source stated that Chevron is carrying out some major gas projects aimed at reducing flared gas from its operations in Nigeria and to convert the flared gas into meaningful usage. He said the 500 MMscf/day production is essentially for domestic usage, adding that the company plans to develop a leading domestic gas utilization infrastructure in the country.

Some of the natural gas projects that Chevron Nigeria owns, include the Escravos Gas Plant (EGP), Escravos Gas-to-Liquids (EGTL), Sonam Field Development project, West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), Ohaji South field, and Agura Independent Power Plant projects.

Its Manager, Gas Project,  Debo Lukanmbi, said between 2008 and last year, CNL has been able to reduce flaring of associated gas from its oil fields by 60 per cent and expects to further reduce it by 95 per cent by end of next year.

Lukanmbi however, noted that the disrespect of contract agreements in Nigeria constitutes a major challenge to gas utilisation and commercialisation aspiration.

“Frequent incidents of gas sales agreements and other contracts not being honoured is a major challenge,” he said.

He also identified low domestic gas prices and fiscal uncertainty as challenges to gas project economics.

CNL’s information portal also showed that its net daily production in Nigeria averaged 233,000 barrels of crude oil (bpd) last year. It said: “We operate and hold a 40 per cent interest in 13 concessions under a joint-venture arrangement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Chevron also does business through other subsidiaries in Nigeria.

“Work to rebuild the Olero Creek production facilities and lay a new pipeline to transport natural gas from Abiteye to the processing facilities at Escravos was completed in 2012. Startup occurred in the first quarter of 2013. The production facilities were designed for a capacity of 48,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

“The Dibi long-term project is designed to rebuild the Dibi facilities that were vandalised in 2003 and replace the existing early production system facility, placed in service in 2007. The facilities have a maximum production capacity of 70,000 barrels of crude oil per day. A final investment decision was reached in the first quarter of 2013, and startup is expected in 2016.”

  • Experts harp on savings, investments

    Experts harp on savings, investments

Working class Nigerians need to develop early culture of savings and investments in order to create healthy pool of assets that could sustain them beyond their working years.

Financial and investments experts who spoke at a one-day financial workshop organised by Klass and Korporate Consultants International for staff of Chevron Nigeria underscored the importance of working knowledge of financial and investment management in order to ensure sustainable living standards during and after working phase.

Regional head, public sector, South-South and South-East, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, Mr. Abayomi Adeyeri, who was the guest speaker at the workshop, said people with adequate financial and investment knowledge would be able to make sound decisions that would ensure that they are able to live sustainable and wealthy life.

According to him, the purpose of the workshop was to activate staff potentials in order to expand their overall total income.

“Your money should work for you rather than you work for your money. The participants should be able to make sound financial decisions at the end of the class, convert debts to savings, savings to investments and in the long run, retire strong, early and wealthy,” Adeyeri said.

The workshop had eight modules including goal setting, budgeting, savings and investments, planning for a secure retirement, insurance, stress management among others. The workshop also dwelt on personal income basics, roadmap and personal income management as well as how to manage debt and balance assets and liabilities.

Participants were also made to understand how to set goals, plan for the children, pay loans, and avoid some obvious financial traps by money lenders.

Head, Human Resources Department, Chevron Nigeria, Mr. Babs Ajayi, said the workshop was an excellent opportunity to broaden staff knowledge and make necessary shift to position them for success.

“Presenters were excellent in their fields. The programme was very robust and without a doubt a time very well spent,” Ajayi said.

Chief executive officer, Klass and Korporate Consultants International, Omoefe Siakpere, pointed out that the main reason why most big earners find themselves broke later in life is because of lack of financial planning.

According to her, planning for the future entails an extensive process of the various elements of a financial plan that should be integrated into overall lifestyle which outlives physical existence to include a person’s estate.

She identified personal income management as one of the fundamental elements for a secure future and rejected insinuations that Chevron staff are too rich to get broke.

“The truth is, money is never enough. What you know comes to play, and even if you earn N10 million a month, and you do not have enough knowledge to sustain that money, at the end of the day, it all goes down the drain,” Siakpere said.

She pointed out that many workers of Chevron and other oil companies still have challenges after retirement, noting that the workshop was aimed at correcting that.

She said the training would possibly become regional as Chevron staff in Warri had already undergone a similar training.

“I think it’s going to be a regional training. We were in Warri the other day and we are in Lagos today and we are going to be in Port Harcourt and Escravos just to enlighten them because this is important,” Siakpere said.

She praised the management of Chevron for taking into consideration the future of their staff and urged Nigerians to plan for their future.

“My message to Nigerians is that when you fail to plan, you are planning to fail,” she said.

President, Delta Chevron Employees Cooperative Society Limited, David Ikutegbe, said the programme is meant for a secure future and could not have come at a better time.

We discovered that our members are not doing well after retirement. So while they are still in service, we tell them of the need to bridge the gap. They should start planning for a secure future. That’s why we hire competent consultants to come and talk to them on how they can secure their future,” Ikutegbe said.

In his remarks, general manager, Delta Chevron Employees Cooperative Society Limited, Olusoji Akinwande, said that the whole essence of putting the programme together was to take Chevron members to the next level.

“We want to go beyond the regular loan and thrift services and we really want to see our members do well. We want to see them retire very successful and happy. That’s the whole essence of putting this programme together,” Akinwande said.

He said the workshop offered an avenue for Chevron staff to understand that the best time to start planning for their future is now.

“Not just planning, they have to plan smart and they have to plan ahead of time,’ he added.

Participants expressed satisfaction at the end of the workshop.

Another participant, Bassey Ephraim, said he learnt how to set goals and stand by them.

  • Communities, Chevron at daggers drawn over leadership tussle

Communities, Chevron at daggers drawn over leadership tussle

Members of the Gbaramatu, Egbema and Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front have issued a 21 days ultimatum to Chevron Nigeria Limited to stop all contracts, award/dealings with the communities’ former Chairman, George Timinimi, henceforth.

In a resolution signed by Barrister Mala, Isaac Gbenewei, Frank Keniye, Profit Omula, Barry Mulade, Tom Abanara, Timi David, Darlignton Agbede, Major Atigba, Cmrd Friday Ugedi, Henry Agediga, Clement Komboye, Capt. Alex Yelemu,  Goddy Miebi and Robinson Weimiegbe on behalf of the communities made available to The Nation, the communities warned the oil major to either adhere to the ultimatum or be ready for a disruption of its activities within the three communities.

According to the resolution, members of the communities noted that they “have issued a 21-day ultimatum to Chevron to stop all contracts, award/dealings with our former Chairman, Hon. George Timinimi, who had held position of leadership in the last 11years.

Members of the communities also resolved that within 21 days, should Chevron Nigeria Limited refuse to adhere to this modest advice they “should vacate all locations/installations within the three Ijaw kingdoms aforementioned that are responsible for about 65 per cent of total Chevron oil production in its onshore and off-shore facilities in Nigeria.”

According to the resolution, “the authorities of the Gbaramatu, Egbema Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front is a body that came into being in the year 2000 to, among other things, mediate between Chevron Nigeria Limited and the people of Gbaramatu, Egbema and Ogulagha Clans of Warri South-West, Warri North and Burutu in matters of employment, job placement and contracts emanating from Chevron Nigeria Limited off shore operations to host communities. This is with a view to creating a peaceful and convivial atmosphere that would engender a smooth and crisis-free operation for Chevron’s offshore oil prospecting activities.”

The communities said they are a viable link between Chevron Nigeria Limited and the host communities, playing the crucial role of ensuring a peaceful atmosphere between Chevron Nigerian Limited and the host communities.

“It is also inexcusable that Chevron Nigeria limited which is the immediate beneficiary of the mediating and peace brokering activities of the Gbaramatu, Egbema and Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front has closed its eyes to our plight.

“Furthermore, that Chevron Nigeria Limited should forthwith stop the routing of all allocation of contract, job placement and employment and other benefits due to the host communities of Gbaramatu, Egbema and Ogulagha through the George Timinimi-led executive.”

They therefore warned that  the members of the Gbaramatu, Egbema, Ogulagha Coastal Communities shall not hesitate to embark on serious confrontation to Chevron Nigerian Limited operations within the three kingdoms in a dimension and magnitude unheard of with all its attendant consequences should they continue to accord recognition and patronage to the George Timinimi led executive.

They said that the three oil producing communities were “constrained to cry out for all to hear that its executive led by George Timinimi which was inaugurated to govern its affairs since the year 2003 is still in office 11 years (eleven years) after it came into being.

“We, the members of the Gbaramutu, Egbema and Ogulagha Coastal Communities Front have times without number prevailed on the George Timinimi-led executive to step aside so that a new executive be put in place but they have refused to relinquish their position.

“We have consequently written several letters to the Governor of Delta State, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Director General of the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS), Inspector General of Police (IGP) and all the security formation in Delta State intimating them of the looming danger which the refusal of the executive to relinquish office portends to the peace and security of the riverside communities of Delta State.”

  • GMoU: Chevron completes $83m community projects

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has completed 258 community projects worth $83 million (about N12.8 billion) in the Niger Delta through its Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), its General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Deji Haastrup, has said.

Speaking on the impact of the GMoU since its inception in 2005, he said the initiative had been achieving its objectives.

He said the memorandum replaced the old one which allowed the oil giant to have direct dealings with communities in its operational areas; initiate and meet the communities’ development needs.

But the old MoU didn’t allow the communities’participation. It excluded them from ownership of the assets, which led to undue dependence on the oil firms.

However, he said the GMoU is patterned in a way that the communities take the drivers’ seat in deciding the projects they want implemented.

To make the  GMoU effective, the Chevron joint venture divided the Niger Delta where it operates into eight regional development committees (RDCs), which represent the various community development groups. The RDCs include Egbema-Gbaramatu Central Development Foundation (Delta State), Itsekiri Regional Development Committee (Delta State), Ilaje Regional Development Foundation (Ondo), Dodo River Regional Development Committee (Bayelsa), Keffes Regional Development Committee (Bayelsa State), Kula Regional Development Foundation (Rivers State), Idama Regional Development Foundation (Rivers State), and Jisike Regional Development Foundation (Imo State).

As a result of the success of the GMoU, many of the oil producing communities insist on the adoption of the initiative by oil firms.

Haastrup said: “The company in 2005 pioneered the new social performance strategy to support the socio-economic development of communities around our areas of operation. The strategy, called the GMoU, is hinged on tripartite agreement with community development organisations known as Regional Development Committees (RDCs), NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture and the  governments in the five states where we operate in the Niger Delta.

“Under the GMoU, the communities through the RDCs identify and select the projects they want and use the funds provided by CNL for the execution of the projects. The GMoU has brought significant infrastructure and non-infrastructure development to the communities.

“By the end of 2012, CNL had renegotiated the third round of agreements with the RDCs. At the end of 2013, a total of 258 projects worth about $83 million had been completed and inaugurated in RDC communities through the GMoU. These projects cut across education, health and sanitation, economic empowerment, capacity building and transportation.”

The objectives of the GMoU include encouragement of participatory partnerships among communities, development organisations and governments at various levels, to build community capacity and ownership through high impact and sustainable community development projects that promote social and economic growth, cultivate transparency and accountability into the governance of projects and programmes, promote a safe and secure environment, among others.

  • Fuel scarcity looms in Delta, four others as NUPENG goes on strike

There are fears that queues may soon resurface at fuel stations in the South-South region of the country as members of the Warri zone of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) commenced an indefinite industrial action Thursday.

NUPENG had in June gave Chevron Nigeria Limited a seven-day ultimatum to reabsorb its members sacked by the oil firm or face indefinite industrial action.

The union, however, called out its members in the Warri zone to embark on the strike action on Thursday, citing Chevron’s failure to honour a communiqué signed by both parties, at the behest of the Ministry of Labour and Productivity on July 10.

A statement signed by the union’s Senior Assistants General Secretary, Warri Zonal Council, Mr. Otite Onohwowho, directed all members of the union within the zone to comply with the strike, noting that the strike had commenced from Thursday.

“As a result of the refusal of Chevron Nigeria Limited Management to honour the communiqué of July 10th, 2014 issued at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Abuja, to resolve the industrial dispute between the union and management, the strike action that was earlier suspended is hereby resumed,” the statement declared.

The directive also urged all branch executives within the Warri Zonal Council to ensure that the decision was strictly followed in solidarity with members, whom the union claimed were being treated like slaves by Chevron.

The Warri zonal council of the NUPENG covers five states namely – Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi and Ondo.

  • Ondo communities threaten to shut Chevron’s operations

Security operatives in Ondo State are on the alert on the ultimatum given by the host oil communities to Chevron Nigeria Limited.

The communities had written separate letters to Chevron Nigeria Limited and the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko through Ilaje Ugbo coastal communities development committee (IUCCDC) dated June 30 and July 7.

They gave the company 11-day ultimatum to pay them their outstanding benefits or vacate the land in its own interest.

According to the letters signed by the chairman of council of Baale , Ugbo land, Chief Oyetomi Andrew, the secretary, Chief Asunmaga Abayomi, Youth leader,Nana Adedeji and chairman Ilaje patriots Comrade Aganyebi Kosieda, they threatened to shut down the operations of the company in the region at the expiration of the ultimatum, if their demands are not met.

The communities called on Governor Mimiko to urgently intervene in the matter to prevent crisis.

They decried what they described as “unholy alliance” by some state government officials with Chevron company which they said was detrimental to their agitation.

IUCCDC urged chevron to commence immediate payment of the three years scholarship for their indigenes as stipulated in their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and relate appropriately with authorized associations that represents the interest of the oil communities in the state.

Under this programme, the company has put a scheme in place for employees to give their time and money towards a worthy project and then the company will match the funds raised by the employees to ensure that the project is executed.

The building was an existing dilapidated school block, which was reconstructed and equipped with classroom furniture. He said:  “Today’s event is another demonstration of  the value which the company places on partnership, as stated in what we call the Chevron Way™,  a set of sound ethics  that directs all we do and the way we do things at CNL. ” He also appreciated the students and staff of Ilasan Secondary School for their efforts in ensuring the successful completion of the project.
