#BBOG confirms rescue Chibok girl as 14 on list

Members of the #BringBackOurGirls (#BBOG) advocasy have confirmed that the rescued Chibok girl Salomi Pogu is number 14 on their list.

Spokesperson for the #BBOG Sesugh Akume in a statement yesterday confirmed that Salomi is number 14 on their list and not 86 as stated by the military and her father is mallam Pogu Yahi from Chibok.

•Swapped Boko Haram commander threatens to bomb Abuja
•This is torture, my daughter spoke under duress’-says girl’s mother
    • ‘Ignore him’, army tells Nigerians

Flaunting an AK-47 in her Boko Haram camp, one of the Chibok girls remaining in the custody of the terror sect, insisted yesterday that she is gone with them for good.

Maida Yakubu, flanked by three other girls, all dressed in niqob (veil), said in the latest video message from the sect that she is now married to a Boko Haram fighter.

But her distraught mother believes Maida could not have willingly said what she said.

She said her action came from torture.

In a second video released late Friday by the sect, one of the Boko Haram commanders released last week in exchange for freedom for 82 of the Chibok girls vowed that there is no going back for them in fighting the rest of the country.

He threatened that Abuja would soon come under a bomb attack.

The military responded swiftly to the threat yesterday, branding it “mere propaganda.”

Maida was interviewed in the video by a Boko Haram commander.

Below is the interview as obtained by Sahara Reporters:

    Question: What is your name?

Answer: My name is Maida Yakubu.

    Question: Where are you from?

    Answer: From Chibok.

Question: What are your parents’ names?

Answer: My mother’s name is Esther Mutari and my father’s name is Yakubu Kaba.

Question: What is the name of your school?

    Answer: GDSS Chibok.

Question: Why did you refuse to return to your parents?

Answer: Because they are in the town of infidels. We want them to accept Islam and join us to practise the religion and rest in the hereafter.

Question: What is the truth about the allegation that you were married off by force? Is that true?

Answer: It is not true, only those who agreed to marry are married off.

Question: What message do you have for your parents?

Answer: My message to them is for them to accept Islam and practice the religion of God.

Question: What message do you have for the people of Nigeria?

Answer: I call on all Nigerians to leave any book that is not from God and follow the holy book and the sayings of the Prophet. God’s religion will continue to prosper whether you like it or not. If you refuse, you will die in frustration.

A distraught Esther could not believe what her daughter said in the video.

She told AFP that Maida acted under duress.

“For me, this video is torture,” she said.

    “I haven’t slept since I watched it.

“The tie that binds us is unbreakable. It’s just not possible that my daughter prefers her kidnappers to me.”

Muntari said she “immediately understood that she had been forced to say what she said in the video”.

Another Chibok parent, Enoch Mark, said the video has “instilled fear in our minds and has somewhat dampened our hope that our girls will be freed.”

“I don’t think any of our girls would choose to stay with Boko Haram if they were given a choice,” Mark whose two children are missing, said.

“The only explanation” is that Maida was “forced to stay”.

Maida’s comments confirm the statement last week by Presidential spokesman Garba Shehu that one of the Chibok girls refused to return home with the 82 whose freedom was negotiated with the terror sect.

Mediator and lawyer Zannah Mustapha spoke in the same vein, saying some of the abducted girls refused to be released, fuelling fears that they have been radicalized.

In the second Boko Haram video released on Friday night, a man who identifies himself as Abu Dardaa, or Money, said Boko Haram is back in Sambisa Forest and is preparing to bomb Abuja.

“More bombs attacks are on the way, including Abuja that you feel is secured,” he boasted in Hausa.

According to him there can be no peace but war between the group and Nigeria.

He also said more than five Commanders from the terror group were released in exchange for the Chibok girls.

He said there has been no sulhu or dialogue with the government and there won’t be any,” he said, saying: “only war is between us.”

Last month, the Department of State Services (DSS) said it had thwarted plans by Boko Haram to attack the British and U.S. embassies in Abuja.

The Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman yesterday branded the Boko Haram threat to bomb Abuja as mere propaganda

He said the terrorists have lost touch with current realities.

Usman said the video messages were designed to seek relevance and attention.”

On Abu Dardaa’s threat, the army spokesman said: “As you are all aware, he was a direct beneficiary of the process that led to the release of 82 of the abducted girls and does not have a say or capacity to do anything, therefore his threats should be ignored.”

He assured Nigerians of continued commitment of the military to federal government’s effort to bring back home all the remaining Chibok girls.

He said: “We will not relent in our determined efforts of clearing the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists as manifested through the ongoing clearance operations.

“The Nigerian Air Force is unrelenting in its bombardment while other security agencies are equally doing their best.

“We should not give in to terrorists’ propaganda and empty threats. We have come to a very critical stage of the fight against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria that requires more patriotism and security consciousness.

“Gone are the days when people glamorized terrorists and their criminal acts.”

Dubai-based Nigerian journalist, Ahmad Salkida, reputed to have direct access to top leaders of the sect, released part of the video to Sahara Reporters.

He confirmed the identity of Maida in a tweet.

“The Chibok girl that spoke in the video today, holding an AK47 rifle is Maida Yakubu,” he wrote.

Maryam was also discovered to be carrying a 10-month-old son, named Ali. She has been taken to the unit’s medical facility for proper medical check up.

Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman said: “It is imperative to state that troops have been working round the clock to clear remnants of Boko Haram terrorists wherever they might be hibernating and also rescue all persons held hostages by terrorists.”

My daughter was pregnant when abducted, says father of freed Chibok girl with baby

It was a scene that brought out tears in the eyes of all present as the 21 freed Chibok girls were reunited with their parents yesterday in Abuja.

The Bible-clutching girls danced and sang with joy during the service attended by top government officials and a few other guests.

The event got to its high pitch as the parents arrived at the venue while the service was ongoing.

It was the first meeting after two and a half years of separation.

The excited girls ran, crying to parents who were equally so excited to see them. The parents hugged and carried them up in excitement.

The father of Deborah Jafaru explained how his daughter was taken and how grateful he was.

He said: “Unlike the others, Deborah had already finished her secondary school; she did not make her papers and returned to rewrite her WASCE when she was taken.

“She just got married two weeks before returning for her papers and they took her, her husband has remarried now. They abducted her with pregnancy and she had my grandchild there but I’m just grateful to God and the government for returning my daughter and grandchild to me safely.  Words cannot describe how I feel at the moment.”

Deborah is the only one among the girls who returned with a baby.

Mrs Rifkatu John, carried her daughter Jummai Bakwa, on her back, with her wrapper like a baby.

She refused to leave her daughter throughout the event . She said: “I never thought that I would see my daughter again in this life time; I prayed so much for her safe return and here she is finally. I just want to give God all the glory and thank the government for bringing her back.  I pray that the other Chibok mothers have the opportunity to see their daughters again and experience the joy I feel today,” she said.

Another Chibok girl, Rahab Ibrahim, expressed gratitude to the government for ensuring their release, saying: “We never knew they would come out, we thought we were going to be there and never come out but here we are today, with our parents, I want to thank the government for making it possible for us to see our parents again today.”

The mother of Mariamu Lawal pleaded with the government to rescue the other girls.

“We are grateful to Buhari and all Nigerians for supporting us and ensuring the release of our daughters, we hope that the other girls are rescued as soon as possible, so their parents will have the opportunity to be as happy as we are today.”

Father of Grace Gaphani said:  ”I am grateful to God and Nigerians for not forgetting us, I had lost hope, I never thought that I would see my daughter again but God returned her to me, I am so grateful to God for giving me another chance with my daughter, I am entrusting my daughter in the care of the government, let them take care of her, give her all the education she wants, even if it means taking her to America, I give them the permission to do it. She has always wanted to be educated, now I want the government to help her attain the level of education she wants to attain.”

Chairman of the Chibok parents Association, Yakubu Nkeki said the parents would not be returning home with the girls. “They have not been handed over to their parents completely because they are still undergoing some trauma counselling, we are not taking them back home with us, they are going to remain with the government, to ensure their welfare and health before they are handed to us.

”We pleading with the government to find a reasonable school for them, we want them to continue with their education.”

Nkeki also lamented the negative news making the rounds on the social media about the girls being ill and pregnant which according to him is not true.” I have gone on the Internet and seen so many negative stories concerning our girls, some people say they are sick, some say pregnant and so many things but here we are today and our daughters are not looking ill or pregnant, they recognised us as soon as we arrived and were so excited, I just want people to stop spreading bad news about our daughters, people should please wait, verify before spreading news.”

‘Chibok girl’: Fed Govt sends delegation to Cameroun

•Parents of abducted students to identify suspected suicide bomber
•Self-confessed Chibok girl flown to Yaounde

The Federal Government is sending to Cameroun immediately a delegation comprising parents of some of the girls abducted in Chibok, Borno State. They are to go and identify the self-professed Chibok girl suicide bomber arrested in the northern part of that country on Friday.

The 15 year old girl and her female accomplice were apprehended by local self-defence forces in the village of Limani, in an area of northern Cameroun that has been the target of frequent suicide bombings in recent months moment before they could blow themselves up.

The two carried explosive devices on their bodies.

They are now being interrogated by Cameroun’s security agents who said they would contact their Nigerian counterparts with a view to ascertaining the ‘Chibok girl’s’ claim.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Malam Garba Shehu, said that Women Affairs Minister Aisha Alhassan and the Nigerian High Commissioner in Cameroon have already swung into action and are receiving a lot of cooperation from the Cameroonian authorities on the issue.

Shehu confirmed that one of the two girls indeed claimed to be among the abducted girls although there were doubts last night about the claim following fresh information from Cameroon that the two girls were aged about ten years.

“One of the two is also believed to be heavily drugged and therefore not in full control of her senses,” Shehu added.

The Nigerian High Commissioner in Cameroon, Ambassador Hadiza Zakari Mustapha is expected to seek permission to meet with the suspects.

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation has offered to sponsor two parents from Chibok who have been selected to embark on the trip to Cameroon.

The two are Yakubu Nkeki, Chairman of the Parents of the Abducted Girls from Chibok Association, and Yana Galang, the group’s women leader.

“The Nigerian High Commission will receive the two and will facilitate their access to the two girls once permission to meet and verify their identity is obtained from the Cameroonian authorities,” Shehu said.

Nigeria and the rest of the world, The Nation gathered on good authority in Abuja yesterday, are keen to hear revelations that may be made by the suspect if truly she is one of the 219 girls abducted by the terror sect, Boko Haram, from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State in April, 2014.

Government has been unable to establish the whereabouts of the girls which makes their rescue difficult.

Well placed sources confirmed last night that the ‘Chibok girl’ was yesterday flown from Maroua in northern Cameroun to the capital, Yaounde for debriefing and identification.

Abuja was however monitoring development last night.

The Defence Headquarters was said to be waiting for information on the development from the Multi-National Joint Task Force of which Cameroun is a member.

The source said: “From the situation report, the girl was taken to Salak Airport in Maroua from where she was flown to Yaounde for debriefing and proper identification.

“The debriefing of the suspect will begin later today (last night). Apart from Nigeria, many countries are interested in the latest development.

“The Federal Government is monitoring the situation in Cameroon to get the true picture of who was arrested.

“All I can assure you is that a bilateral understanding will prevail at the end”

A military source said the Camerounian military was yet to link up with the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) with the appropriate communication.

“So, the Nigerian military authorities cannot make any categorical statement. Even when we get information from Cameroun, we still have to verify it.”

It is expected that the girl, if truly is among the missing Chibok students, will shed light on their abduction, their treatment by the terrorists, the fate of the other girls and the like.

#BringBackOurGirls group which was set up to arouse public interest in the fate of the Chibok girls said yesterday in Abuja that it was expecting official information from the Federal Government on the matter.

Spokespersons for the group- Aisha Yesufu, Oby Ezekwesili and Hadiza Bala Usman, said in statement in Abuja that they could not respond immediately to the news “conclusively until we have facts from the Nigerian government; from whom we requested and have eagerly been awaiting official information on the matter.

“In the interim however, our thoughts are as follows:

    “The claim by the young woman that she is a Chibok girl should reawaken the Nigerian government to the zeal and commitment necessary for ensuring that they are rescued and brought back;

“This development suggests that we now have a possible source of credible intelligence as to what transpired, where the others are, and other leads required to facilitate their rescue.

“Regardless of whether she is one of our Chibok girls or not, our thoughts and sentiments remain the same:

    1. using children, girls who should be in school (or any humans at all) as suicide bombers is not only tragic and cruel, it is completely reprehensible and we denounce it;
    2. these children suicide bomber are themselves victims, and must be seen and treated as such;

    iii.         we all must hasten to free all those in captivity. For as long as they are with the monsters, we all are ourselves unsafe and equally in captivity;

    1. a few weeks ago, a girl suicide bomber did not detonate her device at an IDP camp because she knew her family was most likely in that camp, and she could not kill them.

    It is important to send out messages that counter the programming of the terrorists. This may help in empowering these victims from detonating the explosives and accessing help;

    1. this particular experience highlights the importance of building not only a regional coalition among neighbouring countries to counter terror, but a global one.

“The Nigerian government as a matter of urgency needs to swiftly act to ascertain the facts of this matter and make them public. It is getting to 24 hours since the news broke.

“We need to know her name and identity, her parents’ names, where she is from, possibly extract DNA samples for quick testing and matching, etc.

“This should be a wakeup call to the Nigerian government to adopt and utilise our citizens-developed tool the Verification, Authentication, and Reunification System (VARS) designed by our movement for such scenarios as these. This tool was accepted by the federal government on 8 July 2015 during our meeting with the president, but has not been deployed.

“Likewise, the Missing Persons Register which would have been useful in tracking this young victim in order to commence her rehabilitation, reunification, and reintegration process with her family and community.”

Each of the two girls in Cameroun were said to be carrying explosives weighing 12kilogrammes.

Self-professed Chibok girl suicide bomber arrested

A female suicide bomber, claiming to be one of the 219 schoolgirls kidnapped almost two years ago in Chibok,Borno State, was yesterday intercepted in northern Cameroon moments before she could blow herself up.

She was one of two suspects stopped by local self-defence forces in the village of Limani, in an area of northern Cameroon that has been the target of frequent suicide bombings in recent months.

The two carried explosive devices on their bodies.

They were then handed over to Cameroonian soldiers belonging to a multi-national force set up to take on Boko Haram.

Overnight, soldiers shot dead  two other suspected female suicide bombers near  Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, averting what could have been another tragedy in the troubled city.

In a high-profile attack that sparked a global outcry, Boko Haram militants raided Government Girls Secondary School,Chibok  in April 2014, while the girls were taking examinations.

They loaded 270 of them onto trucks, though around 50 escaped shortly afterwards.

“One of them indeed declared that she is one of the Chibok hostages. She is around 15. We are now verifying because on the Nigerian side, they have the names and photos of these girls,” said local government administrator Raymond Roksdo.

Two military sources, who asked not to be identified as they were not authorized to speak to the press, also confirmed that the girl had claimed to have been one of the Chibok abductees.

“We need a few days to be able to confirm this information. We have to debrief all the men who were present and interrogate the two girls before we can say anything,” one of the military sources said.

There had been fears that Boko Haram might have been using the girls as human shield in its insurgency or as suicide bombers.

President Muhammadu Buhari said recently on Al-Jazeera that government had no reliable intelligence on the whereabouts of the girls.

A few weeks after the abduction, Boko Haram leader Ahmed Shekau put the girls on show  in one of his video messages and said he had converted them to Islam and would marry them off.

President Buhari  ordered a new investigation into the kidnappings in January and joint operations between Nigeria and neighbouring  Niger, Chad and Cameroon have succeeded in driving Boko Haram from many of its strongholds in Nigeria last year.

However, as an 8,700-strong regional task force seeks to stamp them out once and for all, the Islamists have stepped up cross-border attacks and suicide bombings, many of them carried out by young girls.

The Nigerian Army yesterday announced in Abuja that vigilant troops of 7 Division Garrison based in Maiduguri and members of Civilian JTF averted a suicide attack on Borno State after intercepting  two suicide bombers.

Colonel Sani Usman, acting Director, Army Public Relations, said in a statement that troops intercepted the suspects  at about 1:20am almost 100 metres south of Umurari village, on the outskirts of Maiduguri yesterday.

According to him, one of the suicide bombers on sighting own troops detonated her explosive device, killing herself instantly, while the second bomber in an attempt to escape was gunned down by one of the Garrison snipers.

He added that following the incident, combined team of Police and Army’s Explosive Ordinance Device team safely detonated the unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices strapped on the gunned down suicide bomber.

The Army Public Relations chief said there was no casualty beyond the two suicide bombers, while troops and members of Civilian JTF deployed in the village are now combing the general area to forestall further breach of security.

He added that the area is calm and law-abiding citizens are going about their normal activities without fear.

  • Parents rush to identify Chibok girl

Parents rush to identify Chibok girl

THE parents of some of the abducted Chibok girls rushed to Yola, the Adamawa State capital, yesterday to identify, Susan, who was abandoned by Boko Haram.

They were anxious to find out if she was their daughter or not, since she was said to be unstable and may not be able to identify herself.

The Director of Publicity, Kibaku Area Development Association (which represents Chibok in Abuja), Dr. Manasseh Allen, said the community was eager to identify her.

Allen said: “She is not in a good state, but we have sent some people from the village to Yola. She was taken by security agents to the police hospital in Yola, where she is receiving treatment. There are some parents with daughters bearing Susan but the surname she gave us is different from what we have, so we are sending some people to the police in Yola to verify whether Susan is from Chibok or another community.

“By tomorrow when the parents would have met, we will be able to confirm her identity. She may be one of our girls but mixed up her surname because of her mental state. We sent the father of a particular Susan with them to verify. They left for Yola this morning but it might take them the whole day to get there because of the state of insecurity. Seeing her will depend on the access given to them by security agencies.”
