South Africa to strip Chidimma Adetshina of citizenship, travel documents

Chidimma Adetshina, the beauty queen who made headlines for her nationality controversy, is to be stripped of her South African identity and travel documents.

This decision comes after an investigation by the Department of Home Affairs, which questioned her eligibility to compete in the Miss South Africa pageant due to her mother’s Mozambican roots and Nigerian father.

Adetshina, a law student born in Soweto, South Africa, withdrew from the competition in August amid allegations that her mother may have committed “identity theft” to obtain South African nationality.

Following her exit, the law student accepted an invitation to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria, and won the title. She is in Mexico to represent the country at the Miss Universe competition.

The controversy surrounding Adetshina’s nationality sparked a wave of xenophobic vitriol in South Africa, leaving her traumatised and in need of therapy.

In an interview with the BBC, she expressed emotional distress and revealed plans to seek professional help.

In a recent announcement to a parliamentary committee, Tommy Makhode, the top civil servant at the Department of Home Affairs, confirmed that Adetshina’s documents would be revoked due to her and her mother’s failure to provide reasons for eligibility by the deadline.

The case has been referred to the Hawks, a special police unit investigating serious crimes, which has concluded that it was a “case of fraud.”

Makhode noted that prosecutors are reviewing the matter and further decisions will be made from them.

Adetshina has maintained her pride in her South African and Nigerian heritage.

Adetshina explained that she was spending excessive time reading negative comments, which became increasingly toxic for her well-being.

“I had to delete it because I felt like it was too much for me. I’m a comment reader so I read every comment; that’s the thing. So for me, I could spend 80% of my day reading comments.

”I’d read the comments and all and it became toxic for me. I use Instagram but I did limit my comment section one time,” Adetshina explained.

Crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, has addressed alleged identity theft by the South African Government.

In an interview on Arise News, the 23-year-old denied stealing anyone’s identity, stating that she is waiting for the conclusion of the case before making further comments.

Adetshina, who was born in Soweto, South Africa, to a Nigerian father and Mozambican mother, faced criticism during her Miss South Africa contestant announcement.

The South African Department of Home Affairs alleged that her mother committed fraud and identity theft.

However, Adetshina maintained that she did not steal anyone’s identity and is avoiding commenting on the matter until all the facts are revealed.

She explained that she exited the Miss South Africa pageant to pursue her dream of competing in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, adding that she is not running away from the allegations but rather focusing on her goals.

“I did not steal anyone’s identity. I’m just waiting for the conclusion of the case and the whole matter. Then moving forward I will know exactly what to say because I feel right now if I say something and another thing comes out tomorrow. I’m just avoiding all those two things contradicting each other.

“I really avoided the questions because it is a legal matter and I don’t have all the facts around the matter, but what I can say is that I was not running away from any of that. I was just running because I knew I had a dream that I wanted to fulfil.

” I’m not fully aware of the matter. But what I can speak on is that I know I did not steal anyone’s identity,” she said.

VDM faults Chidimma Adetshina’s victory as Miss Universe Nigeria 2024

Twenty-three-year old Chidimma Adetshina represented Taraba State to emerge Miss Universe Nigeria 2024.

Adetshina, who was born and raised in South Africa with a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, withdrew from Miss South Africa due to issues concerning her nationality and accusations of fraud by the South African Home Office.

However, popular social media influencer and critic, Vincent Otse aka VeryDarkblackMan (VDM) has kicked against the win.

VDM had before the pageantry predicted that Adetshina would win not because she deserved it but to spite the South Africans who rejected her. However, he cautioned against favouritism.

In a new video after Adetshina’s victory, VDM said: “As I predicted, they have given Chidinma the Miss Universe (Nigeria) crown. They tried to be fair but later ended up not being fair. Because she had a small problem in South Africa and was frustrated, you now invited her to Nigeria for the Miss Universe pageantry and gave it to her. How about the ladies that have been preparing for this thing a long time ago? Because I am sure you people did not give it to her by merit but by pity.  This is not fair. This is favouritism and pity. A lot of people have used this pity thing to win a lot of things in this country.’’

You should have allowed her to contest next year so that those who have prepared for it would do their thing in peace. I understand it was done for clout for the audience to watch, still it is not fair. She doesn’t deserve that thing at all.”

  • Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina bows to pressure, withdraws from pageant

Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina bows to pressure, withdraws from pageant

After a prolonged controversy over her eligibility for the Miss South Africa pageant, Chidimma Adetshina, one of the top contenders for the crown, has finally bowed out.

Her decision to throw in the towel followed months of row within the South African public over the authenticity of her citizenship despite being born and bred in South Africa because her father is a Nigerian and her mother a Mozambican.

Twenty-three-year old Chidimma gave in on Thursday morning following a statement issued by the Department of Home Affairs for South Africa on Wednesday night, claiming that preliminary evidence suggested that her mother might have committed identity fraud.

“Information we have uncovered thus far, the Department of Home Affairs can indicate that prima facie reasons exist to believe that fraud and identity theft may have been committed by the person recorded in Home Affairs records as Chidimma Adetshina’s mother,” the statement said.

The department, which commenced investigations on Tuesday, alleged that Ms Adetshina’s mother stole a South African woman’s identity to register her birth 23 years ago.

Barely 24 hours the Home Office’s statement, Chidimma issued a statement announcing her decision to withdraw from the pageant.

The statement reads: “I would like to start by thanking everyone who has stood beside me right from the start of my Miss South Africa journey.

“I am grateful for all the love and support I have been shown.

“Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey.

“However, after much careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and well-being of my family and me.

“With the support of the Miss South Africa Organisation, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish my fellow finalists all the best for the remainder of the competition.

“Whoever wears the crown represents us all.”

The nation had reported two weeks ago the pressure piled on Chidimma by suspected South Africans with Xenophobic bent.

In the story, she had lamented feeling no love from the people she sought to represent as Miss South Africa despite being born and raised in the Nelson Mandela’s country.

Expressing how much her spirit was dampened by the development, Chidimma recalled that she was very excited when she entered the contest and did not anticipate the wave of skepticism regarding her heritage.

She said: I was so excited to enter Miss South Africa and did not think that far as to what the public would think.

“Once I got to the top 16, that was when I felt it. People on X were asking why I’m competing because I’m not South African. They questioned my nationality along with my parents.

“At first I ignored it. But as I progressed in the competition, the criticism started growing until I thought to myself: ‘I’m representing a country but I don’t feel the love from the people I’m representing.

“I even asked myself is it worth it? I feel all this is black-on-black hate, as I’m not the only one in this competition who has a surname that’s not South African.

“I feel the attention is on me because of my skin colour, which I think is a disadvantage. It’s also been something I had to overcome growing up.”

Further expressing her frustration, she said: “You try so hard to represent your country and wear it with so much pride but all these people are not in support of you. I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t know what to say or what not to say because this is such a sensitive topic.

“I don’t want to say something and then offend people. I’m at a point where I don’t know whether I should keep quiet or set the records straight, because there is a lot that is being misconstrued.

“To me, I see this as an opportunity where I can educate people. I just need to see how I go about it.”

Chidimma, a Law student, model and netball player, would not be the first whose entry into the Miss South Africa contest would provoke such interest from the South African public. The entry of a model, Sherry Wang, earlier in the year had also sparked a wave of controversy.

She would also not be the first to make it into the competition in spite of her parents’ origin. Carreira Coutroulis took the Miss South Africa crown in 2001. She won the crown despite being born to Potuguese-Angolan parents and also placed second runner-up at the Miss Universe competition.
