    Anambra 2017: Chidoka promises jobs

The flag bearer of the United Progressive Party (UPP) for the November 18, 2017 Anambra governorship election, Chief Osita Chidoka, has revealed his plans to create jobs for unemployed graduates across the state the very moment he is sworn in as governor.

Chidoka spoke at an event during the New Yam Festival in his hometown, Obosi.

At the event, which was graced by a large crowd of his kinsmen, supporters, volunteers and party members from other parts of the state, the UPP candidate unveiled his plans to bring governance nearer to the people and ease their cost of accessing government services, by creating Government Contact Centres in all the 171 communities the state.

Chidoka said the contact centres will guarantee an immediate 1,710 graduate jobs, by engaging at least 10 graduates from each of the communities. He also announced other jobs openings, through a special Simultaneous Rapid Development Scheme (SRDS) for accelerated development of all communities, adding that it will ensure that no community is left behind in terms of employment opportunities.

Speaking further, the governorship candidate noted that he is happy that Anambra people have embraced the UPP ahead of the election, adding that it is the only party that stands for the people.

His words: “The UPP is the only party that stands for the people. It is the only party which proclaims that Igbos have the right of self-determination; the only party that have declared that Igbos are not terrorists; the party that resisted the recent unconstitutional military invasion of the Southeast and the general marginalisation of the region.”

Giving appreciation to the Almighty for the new yam, the royal father of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, also supplicated for the UPP candidate. He prayed for God to grant him success in the election. Chidoka also received prayers and endorsements from others who spoke at the event.

  • Why Ndigbo must listen to Chidoka

Every reasonable person watching affairs in Nigeria, would likely conclude that the greatest issue in Igboland today, is neither the much-advertised Second Niger Bridge nor the nightmare people go through to access federal roads in the area, because of their impassable nature.

Certainly, these are huge problems that raise concerns of monumental proportion. But they pale into insignificance when laid side by side with the question of locating the place of the Igbo man in Nigeria’s socio-political architecture, and which, more recently because of Biafra and all the concomitant attachments thereto, has now assumed a new meaning, having become, somewhat, a matter of life and death.

Yes! Life and death, because, never in the history of the nation, 50 years on, since the civil war, has the situation of Ndigbo become this precarious. Whether real or imagined, the reality is that countless Igbo people envisage danger and the smell of death in their land.

Not that there had been anytime in the last decades after the war that the Igbo did not have issues with Nigeria. In fact, at the historic Mkpoko Igbo conference in 1994, where they articulated their position for the 1995 Constitutional Conference, under the late General Sani Abacha, they had encapsulated all else into a singular mantra – marginalisation.

The claim is that the Igbo people have not only been encased in a glass cage, but their relationship with and in Nigeria is that of Jonah in the belly of the fish. However, though the problem did not disappear completely, but through some political brinkmanship and manoeuvring, which appeared to nibble at it, the din of this singsong, had ebbed considerably over the years, until now.

Recent events have escalated the echoes of this unpalatable song several decibels over. The two-year plus government of President Muhammadu Buhari, appears to have eroded all the gains achieved in this regard. In fact, if the situation had remained at the level of pre-democracy times, many people would have been less worried. But there are actually many who fear of a cataclysmic eruption that would lead to fire and brimstone, raining on Igbo people not only in the South-east, but in many parts of the country.

Even though the recent quit notice to the Igbo to leave the North has come and gone without any bad news so far, its implication in addition to the recent military operations, such as the Show of Force that led to the alleged invasion of the Afaraukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, home of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Operation Python Dance, that has succeeded in throwing a huge military pall across the entire Igboland, has gone a long way to increase the fear that something sinister is actually in the offing, if not now, then in future.

So, why is every other candidate in the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election next month not making Biafra an issue in their campaign? Why keep mute on an issue, which is as dangerous as an exposed dry gunpowder?

Why, for instance, is Chief Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra State, who today is the number one citizen of that state favouring the mundane, banal, insipid and totally fanciful mantra of exporting pumpkins abroad as his campaign talking point than this matter that strikes at the very existence of the same people he wishes to continue leading? Does he think that forcibly getting youths in his state to remove the insignias of Biafra from their shops, vehicles, keke and other belongings or stopping them from carrying out open demonstrations in the streets would cure the anger in his state at the moment? Why the obvious morbid fear?

Of course, it is obvious that it is more politically correct to keep silent over the issue, because speaking in any manner could be interpreted as an affront and thus, offend the powers that be, who assumedly, hold the key to any election. For that reason, it becomes a no-go area.

How infantile! Now, if you are afraid to speak to the very issues which tug at the very soul of your people, or paper over them, ostensibly, in order not to give offence, what right have you then to aspire to govern over the same people? Has political office become that alluring and sweet that it has to be bought at the price of cowardice?

Leadership goes beyond building roads or providing water. It includes pointing out the direction in which the people you superintendent over their affairs should follow. How many people can point out the roads or bridges built by Ojukwu of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, or Chuba Okadigbo? But today, their names resonate with the people, because, at critical periods in their times, when the bells tolled, they stood up to be counted among their people, because, all politics, as they say, is local.

Is that not why the candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Osita Chidoka is making such waves at the moment in the same political arena, having seemingly linked up to the conduit connecting leadership to the people’s heartbeat and aspiration?

How come it is only the former Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and former Minister of Aviation that seems to have dared the odds, picked up the gauntlet and presented the case of the Igbo people in the manner he is doing presently?  Of course, nothing in his conduct has indicated an open support for the wrong actions of the Biafra agitators. But he has equally not thrown the baby away with the bathwater. Recall that he was the one that went to personally drive Kanu in his own car out of Kuje Prison a few months ago. Yet, he has never failed to denounce each wrong step the IPOB leader took, such as no-election stance of the group and even street agitations.

He has continued to tell anybody who cares to listen how, as a governor, his main task, would be to interpret the Igbo people to Nigeria and vice versa. He has taken time to explain in practical terms how he intends to accomplish this task. This included an immediate campaign for a referendum through the National Assembly for the creation of another state in the South-east, to bring it at par with other zones in the country, personally meeting with Buhari to present the case of Ndigbo and ask him to treat them better, and pushing for the abolition of State of Origin, as an official requirement in the affairs of governments in Nigeria.

Hear him: “I’m asking all the Igbo youth who are aggrieved, who are angry about the situation in Nigeria that our war will no longer be in the streets. Our war will be of intelligence. It will be a war of Uche, Uchu na Egwu Chukwu. We will not be afraid of making Nigeria work for you.”

Now, in which way would this sort of mind-set constitute an affront, offend the powers that be or be interpreted as confrontational? Instead, would it not provide an elixir and a soothing balm to the already festering pain the Igbo nation and indeed Nigeria is undergoing at the moment and benefit both sides in the end?

You only needed to attend one of the Chidoka rallies, such as the one to flag off his campaign, which held at Amorka, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, on September 30, to see how the same youths who did not mind to stop bullets with their bare chests, are now buying into the mantra of using the political process to pursue their aspirations. That is the effect of strategic thinking.

    Chidoka promises succour for poor

Anambra State United Progressive Party (UPP) governorship candidate.  Chief Osita Chidoka has promised to establish a highly competent, resourceful and prudent government that will resurge productivity and create a system that empowers the ordinary people to create wealth.

The former aviation minister   commended the leadership of the UPP for upholding the ideology of the party to serve the interest of the people.

Noting that the ordinary people in Anambra have suffered neglect,  Chidoka said one of the cardinal aims of his administration is “the empowerment of the ordinary people through a special wealth transfer policy; the first of its kind, that grants hardworking people of Anambra State direct access to government guaranteed facilities, opportunities and connections to excel in their respective fields.”

He added: “I want to restate our commitment to run a highly transparent people-based government driven by a knowledge economy that resurges our innovativeness and wealth-creating abilities as a people.

“Our driving force will be our competence, sense of duty and honesty. We will not run a government where only a few individuals have access to state resources and opportunities while the rest of the people suffer. No! That will not happen under my watch. Anambra state belongs to all Anambra people and everybody must be carried along and afforded equal opportunity. I want to create a situation in Anambra where the children of the poor and the forgotten have equal access and opportunity in our development as a state. Once I do this, I would have been true to my calling and vision.”

The former Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)  said the time has come for Anambra to restore the integrity of governance “by voting not on the basis of divisive arguments but for a person of proven competence, character and required commitment to lead the state at this trying time.”

Chidoka said the people are not only aware, but also solidly behind him in the patriotic quest to restore their rightful place in governance. He therefore, urged them to get their permanent voter’s cards in preparation for the election.

While receiving Chief Chidoka at a stakeholders meeting in Orumba South, a community leader in the area, Ichie Nwagboso Onyeagba, commended him for standing with the people and championing their interest at all times.

Onyeagba urged Anambra people to support Chidoka, adding that the November election offers the people the golden opportunity to ensure that incompetent, dishonest and compromised persons are not allowed to foist themselves on the state.

    Chidoka: I’m unstoppable

Anambra State United Progressive Party (UPP) governorship candidate Chief Osita Chidok has said that he is unstoppable, urging his detractors to embrace reality.

He urged party members ro remain focussed and steadfast, assuring that he will win the poll.

Chidoka said party followers should put behind them the recent controversy triggered by the plot to hijack his ticket and brace up for the election.

He spoke in Awka, the state capital, at a meeting with his supporters.

Chidoka said: “Members of the UPP, especially delegates to the governorship primary, should put the unfortunate and distracting episode behind them and continue to work hard as nothing can stop the people of Anambra State from reclaiming their state through the UPP’s determined goal of winning the election.

“While those who fuelled the conflict wanted to use it to scuttle our  governorship primary, the UPP, as a focused party, has overcome its adversaries and heading to win the main election on November 18.”

Chidoka advised party supporters to be alert, adding that the enemies of Anambra State are in frenzy mode, seeking all means to distract and disorient the party.

He said: “We are not unaware of plots being hatched by these foes of Anambra State to destabilise our party and  manipulate the mandate of the people in this election, but we know that Ndi Anambra have made up their minds to join forces with the UPP to free our state from the shackles of the oppressive few.”

Chidoka urged the people, including party supporters and volunteers in the 326 wards to work hard to ensure for victory.

He said the mobilisation should continue, until victory is achieved.

Chidoka added: “ I expresses confidence that the delegates to the governorship primary are very dedicated party men and women who are not swayed by sentiments

“They will vote for a candidate who has shown practical commitment and boldness in protecting and projecting the cause of the UPP and the Southeast in general. They will vote for a candidate who also has that functional and formidable grassroots electoral structure needed to win the election.”

  • Anambra poll: Chidoka receives monarchs endorsement

Former Aviation Minister and governorship candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) in Anambra State, Chief Osita Chidoka, has been endorsed by traditional rulers. The monarchs gave him a stuff as a symbol of endorsement.

The staff, which is the Igbo traditional symbol of power and authority, was handed to Chidoka by the Igwe of Igbo Ukwu, Dr. Martin Ezeh, at the national new yam festival; the iri ji ndi’igbo, attended by an array of South East traditional rulers in Igboukwu.

The transfer of the staff, which was vested on Governor Willie Obiano during the 2013 Anambra governorship election, and now to Chidoka is a loud and significant statement by the royal fathers, ahead of the election.

Speaking while handing the staff to him, Igwe Martin Ezeh said Anambra needs a governor like Chidoka who, he said, has “the required character, experience and commitment to refocus the state for the benefit of the ordinary people.”

He said Chidoka has shown that he has the “proficiency and political will to tackle the challenges facing the state,” adding that the leaders are convinced that, by his achievements in public service at the national level, he has the capacity to evolve and apply innovations that would create wealth and revamp the economy of the state.

The National Chairman of the  Mbido Igbo Association, Mazi Okafouzu Ugochukwu, said his association found in Chidoka the qualities of a good governor.

One dies as Chidoka emerges UPP candidate

One person was yesterday confirmed dead in the primary election of the United Progressives Party (UPP) in Anambra State.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nkeiru Nwode, confirmed the incident.

She said the man slumped and died following a fracas that ensued during the primary.

She said some people came to the venue of the exercise to foment trouble but they were refused entry into the venue.

“Some people came to the venue to cause trouble but they were locked out. I think the man slumped and died as a result of the stampede that ensued,” Nwode stated.

But another version said the victim died after inhaling tear-gas fume from the Police when they attempted to disperse the crowd.

The victim, whose name was simply given as Uwakwe, was identified as a delegate for Owelle Ezunaka Ward 1 and the chairman of the party in the ward.

The primary election was between a former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka and ex-member of the House of Representatives, Chudi Offodile.

But Offodile announced his withdrawal from the race at about 11am while delegates were being accredited for the polls.

Chidoka emerged the candidate of UPP for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

    Chidoka unveils plans for Nnewi

Former Aviation Minister and governorship aspirant in Anambra State Chief Osita Chidoka has promised to pursue a programme of industrialisation, if elected in the November 18 poll.

Speaking while commissioning his campaign office in Nnewi, Chidoka, whose public acceptance and popularity have continued to soar, disclosed that he has perfected plans to stimulate a 24- hours production economy in the area.

He said industries in Nnewi can not meet their desired targets with the current level of neglect, dearth of critical infrastructure and insecurity. This he observed has resulted in heavy financial burden on investors and retarded production, adding that the time has come for strategic intervention.

The former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), known for his knack for providing innovative solutions to difficult problems, said his government would enact policies to shift market emphasis to locally manufactured goods, thereby making local production attractive, cost effective and profitable.

He said a boost for the production capacity of factories in Nnewi will create more employment for youths, enhance ancillary businesses, and lift the economy of the people of the state.

Chidoka said: “There is no how the industries in Nnewi will perform optimally without necessary government support through the provisions of required infrastructure and facilities. We cannot abandon them and expect them to thrive. Government must strategically step in on issues of pro-local production policies, power, access roads, waste disposal, manpower development, funding windows, market openings as well as adequate security that will enable them run a 24-hours shift production.

He added: “A situation where factories shut down after dark for lack of adequate security does not encourage industrial growth. We must link security to economic output. The Toyota factory in Japan does not shut down once it is dark; they work for 24 hours. When our factories run for 24 hours, they will have the capacity to employ more people, their production capacity will increase; that would mean more opportunity for ancillary businesses and more money for our people.

“Government must therefore stop paying lip service to manufacturers in Nnewi. We must partner with them to make Nnewi the industrial nerve center of the nation”, he said.

Union alleges plot by Chidoka to recruit aides into agencies

THE Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN)  has  alleged plan by the out-going Minister of Aviation, Chief  Osita Chidoka, to place his personal aides into aviation parastatals in a last-minute recruitment move.

ATSSSAN, after its meeting in Lagos, said it resolved to use available and legitimate means at its disposal to ensure that the plan “does not see the light of day”.

The aides, the union claimed, were being recruited into the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria ( FAAN) , the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

It said such plan was detrimental to the career  of civil servants in the agencies.

A statement by  Comrade Captain Terling, for General Secretary of ATSSSAN, warned chief executives to resist all antics of the minister or face the wrath  of the union as none of such persons will ever be allowed to resume in any of the parastatals.

All efforts to reach the minister were futile yesterday.
