Nigeria will only attain greatness in unity – Saraki

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki has said Nigeria would only attain greatness in unity.

Saraki told newsmen in Ibadan on Saturday that Nigerians, irrespective of political, ethnic and religious affiliations, must shun calls for disintegration.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Saraki, in company with Sen. Abdulfatai Buhari (APC-Oyo North), was in Ibadan for the wedding ceremony of the daughter of  APC chieftain, Chief Bisi Akande.

The Senate President was reacting to the ultimatum issued by some northern youths to Igbos to quit the north by Oct. 1 and the counter threats by some other ethnic groups.

But Saraki said that the unity of the country was not negotiable, adding that  Nigerians must come together to achieve peace and progress.

“Leaders from the various regions of the country should preach unity to their youths.

“We are leaders to guide the youths through the path of progress which the nation deserves now.

“We won’t relent until this country achieves greatness through unity and peace,’’ he said.

Saraki stated that there was no perfect system, adding the nation only needed improvement from its present state.

The Senate president said that there was no problem in the quest for improvement in a system, arguing that it must not be through threats, division or violence.

He warned those agitating for a breakup to desist, pledging that the National Assembly would ensure that Nigeria remained united.

“We all must stand clearly to defend one Nigeria. There is no room for a division and we must live by example. We are not afraid of anybody.

“We must rise up to make a statement on what is happening. We will be failing if we do not do something that will reassure the people on the need for one Nigeria.

“We are greater being together than going our separate ways,’’ he said.

Aregbesola salutes Chief Akande at 78

Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has described Chief Bisi Akande, former interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as an exemplary leader whose courage in public service has helped Nigeria.

This is contained in a 78th birthday congratulatory message signed by Mr Semiu Okanlawon, the media aide to the governor, in Osogbo on Monday.

Aregbesola said Nigeria’s political history would be incomplete without adequate mention of the eminent roles played by Akande.

He said that Akande’s tenure as governor in the state was remarkable, with his selfless service to the people and transparency in governance.

“Chief Bisi Akande is a democrat of no small status when the history of democratic struggles in Nigeria is written.

“He was one of those who fought to ensure that the military retreated back to the barracks and he never looked back while the struggle lasted.

“His emergence as the Governor of Osun in 1999 proved to be one of the best things to have happened to our state.

“In saluting the courage of this eminent elder statesman, we must not fail to recognise his roles in the conception and actual formation of our party, the APC.

“Chief Akande demonstrated an uncommon agility and vigour in all the activities leading to the successful birth of our party.

“Today, Nigerians can heave a sigh of relief from the 16 years of misrule that the PDP represented,’’ Aregbesola said.

The governor, while praying for a longer life for the politician, said his experience was still much required for the task of building a virile Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akande, a former governor of the state between1999 and 2003, was born on Jan. 16, 1939 in Ila-Orangun.

Ondo guber: Tinubu, Akande have no anointed candidate – Boroffice

The Senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State to disregard the rumours on purported endorsement of any of the 25 governorship aspirants of the party by its national leadership.

A statement in Akure, the state capital by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, described the rumor on endorsement as needless distraction that will never aid its promoters.

He urged the over 3,000 delegates in the party to remain vigilant and steadfast as some desperate politicians may have ignited the rumor in an attempt to derail the focus of the party on free, fair, credible and transparent primary election.

Boroffice said he got assurances from the APC National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former interim National chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and  party leaders in the Southwest geopolitical zone that there is nothing like anointed aspirant or endorsement as far as the governorship primary election of the party is concerned.

The Asiwaju of Akokoland said: “As an aspirant and democrat, I have had intimate interactions and engagements with party delegates over the years.

“The support I enjoy from them is reassuring. No distraction, whether calculated or accidental, can derail our focus on August 27, the scheduled date for primary election. My supporters and I are ready to participate and win.”
He urged the party loyalists to comport themselves and ensure that the desired change in governance needed in the state is realised from February next year.

  • Guinean President: Buhari‘ll fight corruption

    Guinean President: Buhari‘ll fight corruption

Guinea President Alpha Condé yesterday said President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has the qualities to make Africa proud.

Conde, speaking after a private meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in Lagos, described Buhari as an incorruptible leader who will confront corruption headlong.

President Conde, who arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at about 12.30pm was received by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande,  Lagos State Governor-elect Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode and others is in Nigeria for Buhari’s inauguration on Friday.

He said: “At a time Nigeria was in the leadership of Africa. During that period, within the French speaking countries, Guinea was the leader of the countries working with Nigeria to end the crisis going on in the West African sub-region. With the election of Buhari, Africa will be more stable.

“He is a straight forward person and will fight corruption. Just like him, I fought corruption in Guinea. I believe this will culminate in a relationship with Nigeria like we have in the past.

“The relationship will offer opportunities to Nigeria businessmen and those in Guinea. They will visit Guinea to see the opportunities that abound in our country, but I came to Lagos to meet my brother here Tinubu before I meet with President Buhari.”

The Guinean leader explained that before the election, the anxiety and uncertainty in Nigeria became a burden for Africa, noting that if the election had turned the other way it would have destabilised the continent.

He said: “Before the elections in Nigeria, there was anxiety, fear and uncertainty over the land. It was the belief that the country will disintegrate. This is also drawn from the fact that Nigeria fought the Biafra war.

“The war against Boko Haram was also there which Africa has to jointly fight. Boko Haram is not only Nigeria problem, it is African problem. We believe the African Union cannot make progress on the continent without assisting Nigeria to stop Boko Haram. The world believes that African leadership does not possess the power to end Boko Haram.

“There was a decision made in Yaounde, Cameroun to intervene on the issue of Boko Haram. We are really happy with the result achieved so far. I want to use the opportunity to thank the people of Nigeria for their courage. The election in Nigeria is a victory for Africa. We are here to thank the people of Nigeria for the outcome of the elections.

“We must also thank the leadership of the parties for their conduct during the elections. We also congratulate President Jonathan for accepting defeat just like President Abdoul Diouf of Senegal when he lost the elections.”

Tinubu said the Guinean leader has demonstrated his love for the progress of Africa by adhering to the principle of democracy, noting that both countries would benefit in the political and economic opportunities of democratic governance.

He said: “In fact, I’m honoured to host President Conde. Democracy is about freedom and opportunity. For him to come here and share in our joy for a democratic election and for electing a good leader, raised the hope of many Nigerians.  It is a great joy for us. He is an Africanist, Pan Africanist committed to African development, he is committed to democratic values and norms.

“Without that commitment and the promise, he wouldn’t have been here. He can stay back home and enjoy his home. For him to come, we appreciate that; for him to believe and share that belief with us – that African renaissance must come with him in sharing of values with President Buhari and our own political party of which I am very proud of.

“Africa must have its home grown strategy to build its own economy, we must form that synergy among African countries to develop itself, address open trade issue, address the conflict of fundamentalists, address the areas where you have problems, militantcy. What are the bottle necks? What are the problem areas? We have resolved in eliminating   it in order for our today to be better and live for a great continent of Africa.”

“Africa should not continue to be a giant with elephantiasis in the economic world. We can compete. Africans are all over the world competing professionally in every sphere of life. It is lack of good leadership and political in stability that have hindered us in the past. Now we have that leader, we have those leaders and they are working together to share ideas and share vision. We will rescue Africa from destitution, poverty and ignorance and that is all that we are working hard for,” he said.

Ambode expressed optimism that Lagos State and Guinea will consolidate on the existing relationship, to harness eachother’s tourism potential.

“This is a great time he is coming to Nigeria. He came for the inauguration and decided to visit Lagos first. We thank you for that and welcome you to Lagos State. This is the time for us to take advantage of the commercial capital of Nigeria and ensure also that we are able to have strong partnership with the French speaking countries in the West Coast.”

“We are willing and ready to open Lagos for greater business. We assure the President and people of Guinea that the next four years will be greater trade and commerce between Lagos and Guinea. We are willing to open investment office in Lagos and also in the West Coast to make sure we take advantage of the commerce here,” Ambode added.

  • Returning Jonathan will be suicidal, says aspirant

Returning Jonathan will be suicidal, says aspirant

House of Representatives aspirant for Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo-Otin federal constituency in Osun State, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, has warned that  voting for President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for another four years term  would be suicidal for Nigeria.

Speaking in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, Baderinwa said Jonathan’s failure in many sectors has proved that he lacks the capacity to propel the country to greater heights.

The aspirant, who is a former media aide to the former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, said: “It is not possible for Nigerians to take the suicidal option of voting the PDP again, because returning the PDP will further spell doom for the country.”

According to him, the 16 years of the PDP’s reign at the federal level would remain a black spot in the history of the country.

He added, “There wouldn’t have been any justification for hatred, or if you like, resentment if the PDP-led government had done well in its 16 years of presiding over the affairs of the country. But because they have failed Nigerians in such a glaringly painful manner and do not feel any qualms about it, is enough reason to send them parking.”

He expressed optimism that the APC would win the 2015 presidential election, adding, “It is clear that Jonathan will lose the 2015 presidential election. Nigerians should be rest assured that thereafter, Nigeria will find its rhythm and move on the path of growth and development.”

Chief Bisi Akande: Celebrating a worthy leader at 75

It is a thing of joy that we still have in Yoruba land today, a distinguished leader of the calibre of Chief Bisi Akande,

This column opens up today with a portion that was guillotined from last Sunday’s article due to space constraint. It is a thing of joy that we still have in Yoruba land today, a distinguished leader of the calibre of Chief Bisi Akande, the Interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress to celebrate. In an age when all manner of characters are bandied about as leaders in the Southwest geo-political zone, and when ‘leaders’  are being trashed right and left in certain circles, no matter what high office they have held in the land, we of the APC,  and millions of Omoluabi Yoruba and Nigerians in general, can truly celebrate one of our own. A man of impeccable integrity, variously tested and trusted, below is what I wrote about Chief Akande in the special publication for  his birthday anniversary: ‘A dye-in-the- wool Awoist and an irrepressible student of the Uncle Bola Ige school of politics, Baba Akande has grown to become an indefatigable democrat. A tested leader in whom there is no guile, it is safe to say that with the likes of him leading the APC, it will yet be too early to declare Nigeria a failed state. Happy Birthday, Sir.

Fighting Executive Impunity In Nigeria:  Dr Bashir Gwandu’s Example

“I see this case as part of my contribution towards strengthening of the rule of law and a decision meant to send message to investors that Nigeria has come of age and is a place where the law is applicable to everyone, including the president. The Nigerian telecom law is there and it contains adequate provisions to protect stakeholders and investment, all that investors need to do is to learn to stand and pursue their rights in defence of their investments. As for the young ones, never be discouraged, troubled, or get intimidated by powerful forces. There is an honour in public service, just do your part, and God is there to provide protection. Have faith in God and you will never be disappointed.’ – Dr Bashir Gwandu on his court victory.

Increasingly under the Jonathan administration, Nigeria and corruption are becoming Siamese twins.  With executive impunity firmly in place, well-connected and high-profile fraudsters are guaranteed a safe passage, whatever their crime.  By itself, the administration also routinely perpetrates corruption, as the case in which Dr Bashir Gwandu was unjustly punished eloquently demonstrates.

As reported severally in the media when the news broke in 2013, Dr Gwandu, former Executive Commissioner of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Chairman of the technical body of  Radio communications Advisory Group (RAG),  as  well  as  Vice-Chairman  Joint Task Group, JTG-4-5-6-7, of  I.T.U, was summarily  removed from office as  Executive Commissioner of the NCC on 26th November 2012 for  his principled stand against  three major frauds  committed in the commission by agents of the Jonathan government. Indeed,  according  to  Femi  Falana, SAN, who is Gwandu’s lawyer,  Mrs Omobola Johnson,  the Minister of  Communications Technology, actually demanded, by a letter dated April 12, 2013, addressed to the Secretary-General of ITU, that  Dr Gwandu be relieved  of the positions he held at  ITU.  Such barefaced impunity will be hard to come by in any government that sets any stock by transparency and anti-corruption; two elements the Jonathan administration very sincerely abhors.

    What then were Gwandu’s offences?

Of course, his sins against the innermost cravings of a corrupt government was that he spilled the bins on three main frauds committed in the commission, apparently on orders from above.

These, according to several news sources, are:  selling of 450MHz Spectrum to an unlicensed company- OpenSkys Ltd reportedly owned by Mr Emeka Offor and some powerful associates who then connived to remove Gwandu, after paying only US $6 million for a licence that should have fetched the nation over $50 million.  Second  was reported to be the N1.029B waiver applied for by the Communications Minister ostensibly for  three companies:  Multilink’s, Starcomms and MTS, but was granted to only  MTS – a company in which NCC’s Chief Executive Officer,  Eugene Juwah,  in two separate interviews  admitted to having  shares,  at the expense of the  federation account and  those two other companies.

The third issue was Gwandu’s reported opposition to the sale of a 10MHz slot in the 800MHz spectrum-band without competitive bids, as required by law, to a South African company called Smile Communications Limited for about €13million while equivalent spectrums sold in Germany, Italy, France and UK for around €992million.

Till date, these weighty allegations have not been probed by the Jonathan administration.

But Nigerians must thank Dr Gwandu and his intrepid lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, who took his sack case to court as only this past week, the National Industrial Court, sitting at Abuja, declared Gwandu’s removal from office as Executive Commissioner illegal, unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void and of no effect whatsoever. The court, therefore, ordered that Gwandu be paid his accrued salaries, benefits, allowances and entitlements up to 21st January 2014. The court further awarded him N100 million in damages.

Unless, and until Nigerians come to rise up to fight this thoroughly kleptomanic government, we as a country and people, will remain the butt of jokes the world over. Unfortunately, most of these frauds are perpetrated with the 2015 election in mind as the beneficiaries are all potential big election donors and for that alone, the Jonathan government will sacrifice anything.

It is the same amoral considerations that underpinned some of the names recently sent by the president to the senate for confirmation as ministers. While mercifully, Nigerians should see the back of Princess Oduah in the imminent cabinet reshuffle, some of these individuals should not be anywhere near a public office.  It is extremely painful what messages President Jonathan is sending to Nigerians, as well as the outside world about how serious he is on fighting corruption. Even if the former PDP Chairman, recently forced out of office was not accused of any fraud, the fact that a man who could not manage a political party gets appointed to a very critical segment of the economy is also very uncomplimentary. One can understand jobs for the boys, but for a man of Alhaji’s Tukur’s age and accomplishments to have accepted his new job can only be a validation of his grovelling reluctance to leave the former.  It equally says a lot about  the PDP that it could appoint as its Chairman, a person who is not only wanted by the EFCC, but  was  adjudged  by a seven-man panel set up by  none other than Governor Yuguda who reportedly nominated  him,  to have misappropriated N20.4 billion while governor of Bauchi State.

Regarding Jonathan’s new ministers, Nigerians can only hope that this time around, the senate will truly serve the nation.

A hollow hope, many will say.
