PDP convention: Dickson warns on provocative comments

Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has warned winners at the just concluded elective convention of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) and their supporters to stop further provocative comments on aggrieved chairmanship and other aspirants that lost out at the convention.

Dickson’s warning is directed at some high profile party chieftains who have been launching verbal attacks and derisive comments in response to protests by some aggrieved chairmanship aspirants, particularly contestants from the Southwest geopolitical zone.

He spoke with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

Some of the aggrieved chairmanship aspirants including Chief Bode George, Prof Tunde Adeniran, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, Alhaji Rashidi Ladoja, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Prof Taoheed Adedoja who lost out, have been at the receiving end of verbal attacks from the camps of the winners.

One of such instances was a statement credited to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who questioned the right of the aggrieved aspirants from the Southwest, saying the zone had contributed very little to the PDP.

But Dickson, who chairs the party’s Reconciliation Committee, said such utterances could inflame passion and send the wrong signals to the aggrieved candidates.

Bode George urges Atiku to return to PDP

Chief Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and aspirant for the chairmanship position of the party, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to return to the PDP.

George made the call while addressing PDP supporters on Sunday in Katsina as part of his campaign tour to solicit for support to actualise his aspiration.

“The former vice president is a landlord in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as he was among the G-34 that established it.

“In the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Atiku is just a tenant that can be kicked out any time the landlord wants.

“But in the PDP, nobody can kick Atiku out because he has laboured for the establishment of the party.

“Just because your house is leaking, you cannot abandon it and move to a rented house,” he said.

The PDP stalwart urged party members to close rank and do the right thing as the December 9, convention date approaches.

“If we miss to select the right leaders during our convention, then we cannot do anything tangible in 2019 general elections” he said.

George appealed to all members of the party to avoid the in-house fighting that had been dividing members of the party.

It will be recalled that the former Vice President announced his resignation from the ruling party over the weekend.

According to Atiku on reasons for his resignation, “the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people.”

He lamented the absence of youths in the federal cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari saying: “How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

“A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.

“I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people?

“Be that as it may be, after due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life, I, Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, hereby tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress while I take time to ponder my future.

‘Why crisis persists in Lagos PDP’

A group, the Visioners for New Lagos (VNL), has berated two Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, Chief Bode George and Senator Adesegun Ogunlewe, for fuelling  the crisis in the chapter.

The group said that it is lamentable that the leaders could not prevent a flawed governorship primary, despite their wealth of political experience.

According to the group, George and Ogunlewe created the confusion in the party by taking sides in a clearly divisive issue, adding that their lack of neutrality led to tension and confusion.

The group’s leader, Mr. Bambo Akin-Johnson, said in a statement that the shadow poll fell below expectation, owing to the manipulation of the exercise to the advantage of a preferred aspirant.

He said the PDP failed to conduct a free and fair primaries, unlike the All Progressives Congress (APC), which held a transparent primary election.

Akin-Johnson said: “The question many people have been asking, which we also found very curious, is: What offence has Senator Musiliu Obanikoro committed against these people? The man who has committed more into the party than anyone of them and benefitted even less than these people. It shows the character of those that make up the party leadership.

“Apart from the time that Ogunlewe was minister, he should come out with a record of his contribution to the development of the party. His ministerial stint was dogged by the fight between him and George. So, what is his pride?

“Chief George, on his part, as the greatest beneficiary in the party, has never delivered to the party. He never won his ward at any election. But, he has benefitted, in terms of position than any member of the party. His wife is the head of the NDLEA board. What does he want? He has particularly shown  much hatred and disdain while Ogunlewe has been going about running Obanikoro down for doing nothing to them.”

Akin-Johnson called on President Goodluck Jonathan not to allow the illegality and injustice to prevail in Lagos PDP.

He said: “Lagos PDP held a tainted governorship primary with 806 accredited delegates and 863 votes. That is a mystery that must be unraveled.”
