Edo polls: PDP, Ize-Iyamu head for Supreme Court

The People’s Democratic Party in Edo State and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu have expressed their desire to head for the Supreme Court against the Court of Appeal ruling.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu told newsmen after the Court of Appeal ruling that certain issues raised at the tribunal were yet to be addressed.

He said, “Until one is actually able to lay hands on the judgement and read, that is when one can make a fair comment. All we know is that our appeal and the cross appeal were dismissed. But the reasons are not known.

“By the time we lay hands on it, we will meet with our lawyers and our party leaders and take a decision. There were fundamental issues we raised against the tribunal judgement.

“There are things it said that we believe cannot stand the test of time. We are not bound to depend only on corrupt practices to prove our point. Non-compliance is a ground in the Electoral Act and we depended on it.”

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, said nothing would stop the party from appealing against the appellate court ruling.

His words, “I was in court and we were waiting anxiously to hear their verdict. But what we got was a very brief statement saying that they have dismissed the appeal. They did not give the reasons for their judgement.

“But on the strength of our case to the Appeal Court, I believe that there is nothing that will stop us from going to the Supreme Court‎ to see that justice is done on this case.”

Obaseki knocks PDP over stir at new five star hospital

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has knocked chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party in Edo State for causing a stir at the new five star Benin Central hospital.

Obaseki said the PDP chieftains led by the party’s State chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, wanted to score cheap political point by feigning the illness of a healthy family man.

Chief Orbih had described the five star hospital recently inaugurated by President Mohammadu Buhari as a fraud when no doctors or nurses were on duty to treat the ‘patient’ brought by the PDP.

Governor Obaseki who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. John Mayaki, said governance is not run on an ad hoc approach as the PDP want Edo people to believe.

Obaseki explained that the ongoing 3-day strategic policy dialogue workshop would afford his administration the opportunity to holistically look at all sectors including the five star hospital.

He said the workshop is expected to come up with method to administer the various sectors in the state including the new hospital.

According to him, “After the commissioning of the said facility by the past administration, you are well aware that there was change of guard in government – and as such, this disgruntled people should give us some time to look at the entire sector.

“Edo people watched the said scene in the electronic media and came to a consensus that the alleged illness of one Ibawah – who surrendered himself for such ungodly act, was not only a charade but orchestrated by the PDP and their mischievous Chieftains.

“We envision a broader perspective – the possibility of expanding the facility to become a one-stop-shop for medical tourism – and not the normal hospital we are used to – that facility was born a 5-star and nothing short of that for Edo people. After the strategic policy dialogue workshop, a blueprint on government’s direction would be unveiled.”

‘We believed N700m was from campaign fund’

Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Orbih, said on Thursday party members believed that the N700m it received for the 2015 presidential election was sourced from the party’s campaign fund.

Orbih and some PDP leaders have been quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the whereabouts of the fund.

Orbih said he told EFCC interrogators that there was no way he could have questioned the source of the money or know whether the money was stolen.

In a chat with journalists, the PDP chief noted that the money was judiciously expended to the satisfaction of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said, “It is a standard practice all over the world for political parties to raise money for election.”

“The money we received was sent to us from Abuja and we believed it was from the money realized during the fund raising dinner.”

“Edo State PDP was not in a position to know where the money came from.”
