Segun Awolowo’s death, a devastating loss – Ibori

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Segun Awolowo, describing his death as a painful loss to the nation and to all who knew him personally.

Segun, who was one of the grandsons of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, died at the age of 62.

In a heartfelt statement he personally signed on Thursday, Ibori said Awolowo’s death is a personal loss to him.

“I am utterly devastated by the news of Segun’s death,” Ibori said.

“He carried the Awolowo name with dignity, humility, and purpose. Nigeria has lost one of its finest gentlemen.”

Ibori paid tribute to Awolowo’s outstanding leadership at NEPC, noting his instrumental role in championing the nation’s export growth and his vision for a diversified economy.

Under Awolowo’s stewardship, NEPC expanded its support for non-oil exports, nurtured local producers, and opened new global markets—efforts that, according to Ibori, will continue to benefit Nigeria for years to come.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ibori highlighted Awolowo’s character: “He was gentle, soft-spoken, principled—but never weak in conviction. He believed in service, not spectacle.”

He added that Segun Awolowo’s integrity and calm demeanour earned him respect across political divides.

Ibori extended his deepest condolences to the Awolowo family, friends, and colleagues, praying for solace and strength in this difficult time. “May his legacy of excellence, dignity, and national service inspire all of us moving forward,” he said.

  • Urhobo youths endorse Okowa for second term

Urhobo youths under the aegis of the Delta Central Equity Group (DCEG) have agreed to ensure a violence-free election.

The youths, who cut across political parties and other organisations, also endorsed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for a second term in office on the grounds of “equity”.

In a meeting attended by Okowa and a former Delta governor Chief James Ibori on Wednesday in Ughelli town, Ughelli North council area of Delta state, the group’s Convener, Morris Idiovwa, stressed that it stands to ensure that no young man loses his life because of the general polls.

According to Idiovwa, the group’s endorsement of the governor does not extend to his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“The youths in Delta Central have agreed to come together and say, no more violence in our elections. The youths in Delta Central have agreed that irrespective of party differences, no office is worth the blood of another man.

“We have decided to come together for a common interest and our primary responsibility is to ensure that our young men are not killed during the elections, as we are standing to reject electoral violence.

“We must be able to defend our future by conducting free, fair and credible elections. We are not endorsing PDP but Okowa as an individual.

“The Delta Central Equity Group made of different youth bodies, irrespective of party affiliation across the local government have agreed that Okowa should continue as the governor of Delta state in 2019 for the sake of equity.”

On reports opposition is plotting to make the March 2 elections inconclusive, he emphasised “no matter the provocation, no youth will kill another youth for someone to enter office”.

Okowa promised to do more for the youths of Delta Central if re-elected.

Assuring the group has “not made a wrong choice” in him, he said: “We will not disappoint you and in our second tenure, we shall increase whatever thing we have been doing for the youths.”

Expressing optimism that victory is sure, he appreciated the youths for the gesture and urged them to vote “but not allow anybody to come and cheat us, scatter our votes because we need peace”.

Ibori assured that Deltans will vote peacefully, using their permanent voters’ cards (PVCs).

Chief Ibori, while commending the DCEG for the show of solidarity in endorsing the governor, stated in no distant time, it will be the turn of the Urhobos to produce governor.

He said: “We will not be provoked, induced and intimidated but we will vote peacefully and use our PVCs to speak for us. And as you rightly said, the next governor is the Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa”.

Suspected ritual killers, in the early hours of Tuesday, beheaded an unidentified male victim in the Scot Area of Oghara community, Ethiope West council area of Delta state.

The suspected ritualists also harvested the vital organs of their victim, leaving his headless corpse in a pool of blood.

Tuesday’s messy sight came exactly two weeks after another victim, a 60-year old woman, was killed in the same manner, in the same Oghara community, with vital organs harvested for purposes suspected to be ritual.

The sad event of the last event (Tuesday, October 30) happened in the early hours of the day, just exactly as the latest one, who was believed to have been killed before breaking of the day.

The development has, however, set the entire community, which hosts one of the three Delta state-owned polytechnics and is also the country home of former governor of the state, Chief James Ibori.

When reached for confirmation and comment, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Muhammed Mustafa, said the police had already commenced investigation into the development.

“It’s true, someone was killed. Police is on top of the matter. We are working in concert with vigilante and other community security outfits to unravel what really happened and arrest the culprits behind the killing”, Mustafa said.

  • PDP group against Plateau Gov aspirant

The ambition of a business mogul, Geoffrey Bawa Shitgurum, to be governor of Plateau State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 may be heading for the rocks following allegations that he had been convicted in the United Kingdom over some shady deals.

He was said to have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP last month.

The PDP for Peace and Good Governance Forum, a pressure group, therefore demanded that an investigation should be carried out on the allegation.

The organisation said following the conviction in the UK, he may not be qualified to contest the Plateau State PDP governorship ticket.

The National President of the forum, Rev. Jonah Pam, told journalists in Jos that the entry of Shitgurum in the political race of Plateau state will be a great minus and disservice to the party.

He said “Even as the elders were happy about the defections coming into the PDP, we must not fail to point out anomalies where they occur in our journey to relevance and we must say that in this instance an anomaly has occurred which must immediately be addressed by our party if we want to be taken seriously.

“We have noticed that one of the persons who have defected to our great party, is a certain character whose presence in our party will not only spell doom for it in the current build up to the general elections but may dent our image as a party to the extent that we may not be able to recover in the near future.

“The defection of Geoffrey Bawa Shitgurum ordinarily should have been welcomed by all lovers of our party since the man has carved out an image for himself as somebody who knows his way in business and politics.

“But that is only a perception and we must not let such inconsequential impressions not based on any empirical evidence, make us lose sight of the bigger picture, which is what the party stands to lose if the anomy is not addressed.

“The PDP has in the past been blackmailed as a party that not only condones corruption but has been painted as one that harbours criminals. The party was still battling to recover from that blackmail when former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori who was convicted in the UK came back and rejoined the party.

“This is a huge burden that the party is still grappling with and is doing all within its powers to improve on its image and the perception of the people.

While that is going on at the national level ahead of the 2019 elections, in Plateau State, we have erred by allowing Shitgurum who has a similar case of conviction with him to join our party.

“We are persuaded to think that since all information may not be available to the leadership of the party at every given time and given the need to secure an advantage over our opponents, we may have overlooked certain key characteristics for party membership, especially for those who like Shitgurum want to contest for the governorship ticket of the party.

“But since it has now come out in the public domain that the man may not be what he professes to be, then it is imperative that the PDP should do the right thing and launch a special investigation into his case so that at the end day we will not end up with an exercise in fuiltiy. Shitgurum had shown that he is not to be trusted even before he defected to the PDP.”

Pam said when it was first rumoured that Shitgurum was planning to join the gubernatorial race against the incumbent Governor Simon Bako Lalong, not many took it seriously “Shitgurum is a brother and close confidant of the Governor.”

According to him, to support the position, Shitgurum quickly dismissed the rumour with the wave of the hand and called it mere fiction of rumour mongers.

He said, “However, a fraudulent intent, no matter how it is carefully concealed at the outset, will generally in the end, betray itself. The rumour became a reality when the news of Shitgurum’s defection from the APC to the PDP in the state dominated the headlines last month.  The media also reported his declaration to run for the office of Governor on the platform of the PDP.

“Shitgurum was acclaimed to be a seasoned business tycoon and going by this assumption, he should be able to appreciate the sanctity of trust and loyalty.  Governor Lalong and the APC accepted Shitgurum and accorded him deserved recognitions in the party but he betrayed that trust and left to join forces with the opposition.

“That meant he did not only lie to the governor, he also lied to the Paramount Ruler of the Goemei nation, The Long Goemai, Mishoum Martins Sheldas. The paramount chief sensed the acrimonious tension brewing up in his domain and summoned a meeting with Godfrey Shitgurum. He asked if he has interest to contest against his brother. Shitgurum denied it out rightly only for the Chief to hear about his declaration. That is an affront to the entire Goemai nation.

“The political space is wide enough to accommodate everybody’s interest. However, in electing who represent the people, we must be circumspect to guard against treacherous characters who will betray the trust of the people.  Integrity, moral decency and loyalty should not be sacrificed on the altar of politics.

“Shitgurum affirmed that he has the character, capacity, credentials and competence to build a new Plateau. The only character he has demonstrated in politics so far is that of betrayal. How can a man that does not believe in his party’s ideology and can cross carpet so easily to another party be trusted to govern a State?

“Even Shitgurum’s business competence is now in doubt over his handling of the Jos Inland Dry port. The Port was concession to him since 2006 and his highly celebrated business sagacity could not manifest in the completion of the Port for over 12 years and still counting, whereas the Kaduna Inland port that started long after Jos has since been commissioned and operational.

“On the Plateau, Shitgurum got several contracts through proxies and left many of them abandoned. How does this demonstrate capacity and competence?  The Plateau electorates have a genius for identifying pretenders.  Money and corruption are ruining the land, crooked politicians betray the working man, pocketing the profits and treating the people like sheep.

“The PDP as it is has a surfeit of qualified and respected persons who can fly the party’s flag without attracting unnecessary negative reactions to it.

It is our suggestion that the PDP should wash its hands off anything that would be burden to it and refuse to allow its platform to be used by someone whose entry into the party would engender more problems than solutions.

The Plateau PDP, having produced governors for the state in the last 16 out of the near 20 years of Nigeria’s return to democracy cannot afford to compromise on integrity and might leadership standard.

“The screening committee of the party must do a thorough job to investigate all those expressing interest in flying the party’s ticket. It must check thoroughly the allegations that Shitgurum especially the allegation that engaged in fraud in the UK and ensure that all materials pertaining to the case are availed the party while he should be given the chance to defend himself. If found guilty, Shitgurm should not be allowed to contest for the ticket of the party and be should be disciplined according to the party’s statutes.*

…Niger Delta, PDP crisis dominate discussions

Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has met behind closed doors with former Governor of Delta State and ex-convict, Chief James Ibori.

It was gathered that Dickson visited Oghara, the country home of Ibori and seized the opportunity to hold talks with the former governor, who recently returned to his village after serving jail terms in the UK for money laundering.

Dickson, who spent some hours meeting with Ibori on Thursday, reportedly discussed the crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and issues affecting the Niger Delta region.

Confirming the meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to Dickson, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson in a statement said the governor spoke about the roles Ibori could play for peace to permanently reign in the region.

They were said to have discussed how Ibori could rally major stakeholders towards tackling some of the peace and security challenges in the region.

“The two leaders equally discussed likely windows of opportunities for criminally minded youths in the region to be more meaningfully engaged as well as protect some of the critical national assets of the country within the region”, the statement said.

Dickson was said to have earlier spoken with his Delta State counterpart, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, before holding the meeting with Ibori.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the disposition and resolve of Ibori to support current measures at tackling the security challenges in the region.

Dickson was accompanied by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Talford Ongolo, some members of the State Executive Council, including the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Jonathan Obuebite.

Ibori evades airport reception, gets rousing welcome in hometown

Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, on Saturday evaded the huge crowd waiting for him at Osubi Airstrip, outside Warri and arrived his Oghara hometown through the Benin Airport.

The crowd of enthusiasts, including politicians and traditional rulers, had waited for him at Osubi from about 10am, following information that the former governor was to arrive from Abuja through the airstrip.

However, the waiting crowd was informed of the change in the flight of the former governor at about 2:30pm and told he had already landed in Benin, Edo state, a 30 minutes drive to his Oghara hometown.

The change in travel itinerary of the former governor sparked a mild drama at the airport as the waiting crowd, on hearing the new development, went into a frenzy, scampering to leave the airstrip, heading out to Oghara.

At Oghara, a carnival-like crowd awaiting the former governor made free movement impossible. Chief Ibori was shielded into his home by some of his close associates.

He landed the town at about 3:40pm.

Stop celebrating Ibori’s release – Uduaghan

Former Delta state governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has cautioned supporters of his predecessor and cousin, Chief James Ibori not to create more problems for Ibori through unbridled celebrations of his recent release from London prison.
The London residence of Ibori has become a Mecca of sort for the state’s  politicians since his release from prison where he served 13 years for money laundering and other corruption related crimes, last week.
Uduaghan, who spoke with our reporter on telephone, expressed concern that the Ibori’s well-wishers actions could expose him (Ibori) to more political problems.
Among politicians who have visited Ibori are Speaker of the state house of assembly, Chief Monday Igbuya, PDP stalwart, Chief Ighoyota Amori among others like Senator Peter Nwaoboshi who sensationally declared that Ibori facilitated the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Rt Hon Taking Dogara as Senate President and Speaker House of Representatives respectively.
Nwaoboshi, in a video widely circulated on social media, said Ibori made governors, ostensibly incumbent Ifeanyi Okowa, senators ( himself as one), made his daughter, Eriatake Ibori a state lawmaker among others.

Uduaghan however lamented that such statements and showoffs by Ibori’s supporters, could turn to haunt him.

He said that such utterances and boisterous cerebration were capable of creating more problems for the ex-convict former governor.
“For those going London to see Chief James Ibori and posting pictures and making statements, please stop it.
“We appreciate your love for him. But you can go quietly without the unnecessary publicity.
“You are creating problems for him than you can ever imagine.
“Nigeria is a complex country and you must understand and respect people’s sensibilities,” Uduaghan added in a statement posted on his Facebook.
