  • Obaseki unveils plan to build houses for Judges 

    …Trains 300 Stenographers

     

    Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed that his administration has commenced work on the design and development of houses for judges beginning with judges of the Appeal Court and the Federal High Court in the state.

    Obaseki said this while declaring open the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, 2018 Law Week and the official commissioning of the NBA Bar House in Benin City, on Monday.

    He explained that the phased housing project will commence with the first five units for Appeal Court judges and judges of the Federal High Court, assuring that more units will be constructed as his administration plans to develop a colony for judges in the state.

    “The real investment has to be in the people, system and the process. I have decided to relocate the Ministry of Justice to the new Block C in the state secretariat complex and will be fully furnished, computerised with an e-library to make the work place conducive for our judicial workers,” he said.

    The governor noted that his administration has hired 300 stenographers who are currently undergoing training.

    “Court recorders are being procured and by the time the new court building is completed, they will be installed,” he said.

    Obaseki said the goal and focus of his administration is to make the state the judicial hub of the region.

    “In the past 19 months we have made tremendous progress in taking the state to an enviable height. Our administration has made appreciable impact in the lives of our people by insisting on the rule of law”.

    The governor noted that his administration has created a sense of social security, stability, order and a sense of purpose which were made possible because of fear of sanctions.

    “The judicial system has helped in restoring law and order in the state. It has also helped to drive our reforms,” he said.

    The Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Esohe Ikponmwen, commended the Edo State branch of the NBA for the success recorded during the 2018 Law Week.

    The Chief Judge, who was represented at the occasion by Hon. Justice Ada Ehigiamusoe, said: “The various topics treated will go a long way to further stabillise and enhance the development and growth of the nation and the law profession”.

    Delivering the keynote address titled The Role of Law in Economic Development and National Security, Dele Adesina (SAN), said the greatest threat to the survival of Nigeria as a nation is security and solving the security problem will mean solving the economic problem.

    The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday commissioned the new official residence of the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Esohe Ikponmwen, in Benin City.

    Speaking at the event, Obaseki said the edifice is an expression of his administration’s resolve to establish a strong and virile judiciary that will perform its constitutional role effectively.

    He also said his administration has acquired a large expanse of land at the Sapele-Iriri axis of the state for new residential estates and towns to decongest the Benin metropolis.

    He added that the survey work at the site has been done, and on completion, the estate will have common infrastructural facilities.

    Obaseki further said that the state cannot develop without a strong judiciary and stressed that judges need to be well treated. He commended the judicial system for its confidence in his administration to deliver good governance to the people of the State.

    He disclosed that the “Clean Up Edo Project” wouldn’t have been a success if not for the support of the state judicial system.

    Valedictory Court Session for Justice Obaseki holds in Benin City

     

    A valedictory court session in honour of the first Bini indigene to become a Supreme Court Justice, Late Retired Justice Andrews Otutu Obaseki, held on Thursday at the High Court of Justice in Benin City, Edo State.

     

    The session attracted legal luminaries from across the country, who gathered to pay their last respects to the foremost jurist who participated in a total of 658 judgements while at the apex court.

     

    Declaring the court session open, Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Esohe Ikponmwen, who was represented by Justice Ikpomwonba Ehigiamusoe, recounted landmark judgements of the late justice and extolled his sagacity on the bench.

     

    “He was a man of great intellect and wisdom, a passionate and erudite icon of the bench, among the finest and the best. His lordship will always be remembered for his deep knowledge of the law and as an advocate of morality, integrity, excellence and a strong defender of the rule of law,” Justice Ikponmwen said.

     

    In their tributes, Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen, who was represented by Justice Ejembi Eko, Attorney General of Edo State, Professor Yinka Omoregbe, and the Chairman Nigeria Bar Association, Edo State chapter, Mr. Ede Asenoguan, all spoke glowingly of the man, Andrews Otutu Obaseki. They described him as a jurist par-excellence and a legal icon who had passion for justice and fairness, evidenced in his landmark judgements.

     

    The nephew of the deceased and Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, said he was taught the value of hard work by his late uncle, and as a way to sustain the legacy he left behind, he would strengthen the state judiciary to play its role in the development of the state.

     

    “I will ensure we strengthen the judiciary to play the role it ought to play in the society. I understand the implication of not having a good judiciary, where judges are not paid and work in an environment that is not conducive to work, such a system will affect the dispensation of justice,” he said

     

    Obaseki assured the judiciary that his administration understands the importance of the rule of law and justice in the society and would ensure the judiciary receives the necessary support to enable it dispense justice.

     

    Recounting his experience under his late uncle, Governor Obaseki said he was a child of the judiciary as he had the privilege and rare opportunity to grow under the tutelage of the late Andrews Otutu Obaseki, with whom he attended court sessions.

     

    “He has instilled great virtues and values in us. He stood for the truth and represented the truth, which does not change. He was a man of integrity, and we carried ourselves as such. He taught us simplicity and humility and fairness, when you are wrong, you are wrong.”

     

    To allow for the removal of Late Justice Obaseki’s remains from the High Court well, a Motion on Notice was moved by the Edo State Attorney General, Professor Yinka Omoregbe, and Chief Judge of the State, Justice Esohe Ikponmwen ruled in favour of the motion on notice.

    Obaseki appoints Chief Judge 

    Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has appointed Justice Esther Ikponmwen as the Chief Judge of Edo State.

     

    Obaseki in a letter to lawmakers in the State House of Assembly said the appointment followed recommendation of the National Judiciary Council.

     

    He urged the lawmakers to confirm the appointment Justice Ikponmwen.

     

    Speaker Justin Okonoboh who read the letter of the governor at plenary Wednesday referred the request to the House Standing Committee on Judiciary.

     

    He urged the committee to present the report at next Plenary for consideration.

     

    Speaker Okonoboh announced the dissolution of all House Standing Committees with immediate effect.

    Obaseki restates commitment to create 200,000 jobs

    The new governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki has promised to fulfill his campaign promise of creating 200,000 jobs in the state within the next four years.

    The governor made the remarks shortly after taking oath of office administered by the Chief Judge of Edo state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa at the Dr Samuel Ogbemudia stadium Benin City.

    Obaseki who extolled the achievements of former governor Adams Oshiomhole added that; “I’m honored to be succeeding a true friend and I will always uphold your trust. I will resolve to build your legacy.”

    In his speech with witnessed huge applause from the crowd, Obaseki promised to attract industries and aide small businesses for Edo people in order to produce goods and services

    He added, “Edo state belongs to all of us no matter our political parties. Let’s integrate our ideas with diligence and focus on investing on preventive medicine as it is better to prevent than cure.”

    On Education, the governor said, “We will thrive to improve the quality of our schools by introducing ICT and broadband into our schools.”

    On infrastructure, Obaseki promised to continue to consolidate on the infrastructural development which Comrade Oshiomhole started, saying; “We will focus on completing all on-going projects.”

    Edo state: Obaseki, Shaibu sworn into office

    Mr. Godwin Obaseki, winner of the September 28 governorship election, has been sworn-in as the Governor of Edo State.

    Obaseki took oath of office at about 12:45pm administered by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

    He was accompanied by his wife, Betsy.

    Earlier, Philip Shaibu was sworn-in as the Deputy Governor of the state.

    Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole personally drove his Jeep into the Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, venue of the even.
