  • Two conductors found with missing person’s phone

    Two bus conductors, Ojo Mudasiru and Ibrahim Yusuf, were yesterday arraigned at a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for alleged possession of a missing person’s phone.

    Mudasiru, 27, and Yusuf, 28, pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye said the defendants committed the offence on February 3, at 3am, on Morocco Road, Shomolu, Lagos.

    She alleged that the defendants stole an Infinix phone valued at N50,000, from Mr. Victor Godwin, who had been missing for two weeks.

    Olaluwoye said Godwin was reported missing by his wife two weeks ago and the police found his car parked on Morocco Road without his phone.

    “My Lord, the police were able to trace the signal of the phone to the defendants; we are still carrying out an investigation to find out exactly what happened to Godwin,” she said.

    Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere granted the defendants N100, 000 each with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on May 8.

     

  • Lawyers protest murder of Chief Magistrate in Imo

    LAWYERS in Imo state, Friday, protested the gruesome murder of a Senior Magistrate, Remmy Ogu by gunmen. The protesting lawyers boycotted court sittings across the state.

    Addressing a press conference in Owerri before embarking on the protest, the lawyers called on the Inspector General of Police to bring the killers of the chief magistrate who was in charge of Uburu Magistrate’s Court in Oru West Council Area of the state.

    The Chairman of the Orlu branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Chuzzy Attama, who read the position of Imo lawyers said that the courts in the state lacked adequate security men. Attama said that the killing of the Magistrate was a ploy to intimidate the judiciary in the state. He said that they would march to the Government House, Police headquarters, office of the Chief Judge ,the state House of Assembly and the office of the director of State Security Service to register their anger over the killing of the magistrate.

    According to him, “We demand that the police and other relevant security agencies should carry out a thorough and unfettered investigation into the murder of Senior Magistrate Remmy Ogu and unmask the killers and bring them to justice.” The lawyers also demanded that the Police should “provide armed police orderlies for all the judges and magistrates in the state. Provide armed court duty Police for all the courts in Imo State. Provide official cars for all magistrates and chairmen of Magistrates Courts.”

  • Three men docked over alleged cultism in Ogun

    Three men, Femi Hassan, 39, Gabriel Benson, 25, and Wasiu Ogunjobi, 19, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court for allegedly belonging to a secret cult, `Eiye Confraternity’.

    The accused, of no fixed address, were facing a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms and belonging to a secret cult.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused persons and others still at large conspired to belong to an unlawful society called Eiye Confraternity.

    According to Mustapha, the accused men committed the offences on Feb. 27 at about 11.00 p.m. at Gasline area, Ijoko, Ota.

    He said that the accused persons conspired to create fears into the minds of residents by threatening people with cutlass, axes and knife.

    Mustapha said the offences contravened Section 3 and 5 of the Secret Cult (Prohibition and Special Provision) Act Laws of Ogun State, 1999.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Matthew Akinyemi, granted them bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Akinyemi said that one of the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must be gainfully employed.

    He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government and their addresses should be verified by the Police.

    The case was adjourned until April 4, for definite hearing.

  • Six Ekiti College workers docked for stealing scratch cards

    Six Ekiti College workers docked for stealing scratch cards

    Six officials of the College of Health Technology, Ijero-Ekiti on Tuesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged theft of N1.17 million.

    The accused persons were also arraigned for allegedly stealing N500, 000 admission scratch cards belonging to the institution.

    The defendants, Ibrahim Ganiyu (40), Joshua Daniel (38), Afolabi Sunday (45), Ikuobe Sunday (46), Alonge Banji (35) and Yusuf Ozigi (32) whose addresses were unknown, are facing a two- count charge of burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendants and other accomplices now at large committed the offence on November 22 at the college.

    He told the court that the defendants and others at large had burgled the bursary department with intent to commit the offence.

    The offences, according to him, contravene Sections 411 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The counsel to the first defendant, Mr Lai Obisesan, and counsel to the second to sixth defendants, Mr Sunday Ochai, urged the court to grant their clients bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum who must have a verifiable address.

    Adegboye adjourned the case till January 12 for hearing.

    Man gets 12 strokes of cane for stealing motorcycle

    Twenty three years old Agbola Ibrahim has been awarded 12 strokes of the cane in an open court for stealing an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle in Ibadan.

    The motorcycle was valued at N250,000 as at the time of coming the offence.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr.A.A. Adebisi gave the sentence while hearing the case at the Magistrate Court 2, Iyaganku, Ibadan, Friday.

    Ibrahim, who was arrested and arraigned by the police was said to have been nabbed while running away with the stolen unregistered motorcycle around Mokola area of the Ibadan metropolist.

    He was arraigned on one  count charge of stealing with charge No:MI/1555/2017 and pleaded guilty to the crime.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Shalewa Hammed  told the court that the accused on the 23 of August 2017 at about 2pm at Mokola area of Ibadan magisterial district did have in his possession one unregistered Bajaj motorcycle valued at about N250,000.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened section 430 of the  criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.

    Benin High Chief docked for forgery

    A high chief in the palace of the Oba of Benin, Chief John Osamede Adun, has been docked before an Egor Magistrate Court for alleged forgery and destruction of building worth N22m.

    Chief Adun who is popularly known as ‘Bob Izua’ was arraigned alongside two others on six count charges bothering on forgery of documents, procuring execution of deeds by threat, destroying a building valued at N22million and destruction of six graves/tombs among others.

    Others arraigned with Chief Adun were Omorogbe Austin’s, 36, and Festus Etta, 39.

    The accused persons were alleged to have on the 15th of January 2015 at No 114, Uselu Lagos Road, Benin conspired to forge document of sharing properties of late Victor Igbinosun Okunoghae thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol 11 Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria 1976 as applicable to Edo state.

    They were also accused of forging a document purported to be a titled document of Plot 114. Uselu Lagos Road Benin, property of late Victor Igbinosun Okunoghae thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under Section 467 (2) (d) of the criminal code  Cap 48 Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria 1976 as applicable to Edo state.

    The accused persons were accused of procuring execution of deeds by threat with intent to defraud and by means of unlawful violence in respect of the property known as No 114, Uselu Lagos Road, Benin thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 409 of the criminal code Cap 48 Vol 11 Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria 1976 as applicable to Edo state.

    In count three, the accused persons were alleged to have conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of by threatening and chasing away with violence one Mrs. Loveth Austine Obasuyi in the attempt to unlawfully procure execution of deed against her brother and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol 11 of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria as applicable to Edo state.

    The accused persons were accused of allegedly destroying a building worth N22million, only property of late Victor Igbinosun Okunoghae family and further destroying six existing graves/tombs therein committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 451 of the Criminal code cap 48 Vol. 11 Laws of the defunct Bendel state of Nigeria as applicable to Edo state.

    Chief Adun and other accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges when the charges were read to them.

    The court however reaffirmed bail earlier granted the accused persons.

    Presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Igho Braimoh directed the court Registrar to reverify the bail earlier granted to the accused and adjourned hearing to the 28th August, 2017.

    Man remanded in prison for defiling friend’s 12-year -old daughter

    A 65-year-old man, Friday Azala, was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody by an Egor Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly having canal knowledge of his friend’s 12-year-old daughter.

    Azala was accused of defiling the girl at No. 6, Agho Street, off Textile Mill road, Benin, on April 9, 2017.

    According to the prosecutor, Ben Omoruyi, the accused is a friend to the victim’s father, who is bed-ridden, and always comes to the house on the pretence of seeing his friend.

    Omoruyi told the court that the accused had defiled the girl “several times before he was caught in the act.”

    He also said the accused always lured the girl with N20, to have his way.

    When his plea was taken, Azala, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The accused said he only embraced the girl and had never had sex with her.

    “I did no such thing as having canal knowledge of her, I embrace her only on five
    occasions, and I also released on those occasions.

    “Am only been lied against by her mother because we had a misunderstanding. We are neighbours.”

    The Chief Magistrate, Igho Braimah, who ordered Azala to be remanded in prison, adjourned the case till April 19, for hearing.

    Housekeeper, boyfriend bag 7 years imprisonment for stealing

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a housekeeper, Helen Wilson and her boyfriend, Martins Musa, to seven years imprisonment each for stealing property and cash worth seven million naira.

    Wilson, 28, resides with her employer at Victoria Island while Musa, 25, resides at No. 50, Ibadan Str., Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

    The two were standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and possession of criminal charm.

    They pleaded guilty to stealing property and cash worth seven million naira and not guilty on charges of conspiracy and possession of criminal charm.

    In his judgment, the Chief Magistrate, Mr P. A. Ojo, granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum on count one and three.

    Ojo, however, sentenced Wilson and Musa to seven years imprisonment each without an option of fine.

    He adjourned the case till April 19 for continuation of trial on count one and count three.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Roman Unuigbe, told court that the convicts, and others still at large, committed the offences between January and March 3 at 1004 Estate, Victoria Island.

    He said that the duo stole wrappers, wrist-watches, hand bags, ipad, foreign currencies and also sold the employer’s Toyota Camry car, all valued at seven million naira.

    The prosecutor said that Wilson, who worked as a housekeeper for one Aisha Yakubu, invited her boyfriend, Musa to her employer’s house when she travelled.

    Unuigbe told court that when the convicts were apprehended at Adamawa, a fetish ring was found in their possession.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 287 (10), 133 (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law Cap C17 Voll. 3 Laws of Lagos State, 2015

  •  Man docked for defiling 6-year-old girl

    A 44-year-old man, Abdulroheem Abdulhamed, who allegedly defiled a six-year-old girl, was on Wednesday docked at a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court in Lagos.

    Abdulhamed resides at 49, Akinola Road, Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    ‎‎The Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that ‎the accused committed the offence at 49, Akinola Road, Aboru, Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State, at about 1 p.m. on March 20, 2017.

    ‎‎Osayande said that the accused, who resides in same premises with the parents of the girl, sent her on an errand and on her return, took her into his apartment, closed the door and assaulted her sexually. ‎

    She said that the victim reported to her mother what the accused did to her and he was arrested.

    ‎The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    ‎The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.‎

    ‎The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000, with two sureties in like sum.‎

    Nwachukwu ordered that one of the sureties must be a civil servant on not less than grade level 14 while the other must be a property owner.

    She also directed that the sureties should provide evidence of tax payment and have their addresses verified.‎

    ‎‎The case was adjourned until June 8 pending the advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

     

  • Man docked for raping, impregnating sister-in-law

    A 47-year-old man, Magaji Mohammed, who allegedly impregnated his sister in-law by raping her, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, a driver who resides at 18, Atobaje St., Agege, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge bordering on rape.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 2016 and Feb. 28, 2017 at the accused residence.

    Ogu said that the accused raped his 16-year-old sister -in-law, impregnated her and gave her a harmful drug to use with the intention to abort it.

    “The accused raped the girl when his wife traveled out of town. And when the girl discovered that she missed her period, she told the accused.

    “The accused gave the girl a herbal concoction which made the girl to abort the pregnancy,” he said.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 147 and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, entered a “not guilty” plea.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Akanni adjourned the case until April 12 for mention.
