  • Man, 31 remanded in Prison for robbery

    A chief Magistrates Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has ordered the remand in prison custody of 31-year-old man, Yusuf Lawan for alleged armed robbery.

    The suspect and others presently at large allegedly robbed one Chief Seleipiri Bob-Manuel of his belongings valued at N810,000 while armed with matchetes and Kitchen knives.

    A document obtained from the court alleged that the suspect and his accomplices dispossessed their victim of his 42″ plasma LG television valued at N350,000, Samsung S+8 phone valued at N250,000, Samsung S+6 phone valued at N200,000 and a DSTV decoder valued at  N10,000.

    The two-count charge of armed robbery levelled against him was not read out to him; the court apparently lacks jurisdiction to hear the matter which according to the criminal code falls within the capital offence charge, hence he did not take plea.

    The offence was committed on March 5, 2019 at Woji community area of Obio/Akpor Local Governmnet Area of the state.

    The presiding chief Magistrate,  Sokari Andrew-Jaja ordered that the suspect be remanded in prison custody and his original case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

    The chief Magistrate later adjourned till April 22 for report of DPP advice.

     

  • Man in court for alleged over N4m property theft

    A 46-year-old man, Allen Macaulay, was on Monday arraigned before a Chief Magistrates Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State for alleged theft.

    Macaulay, a business man allegedly stole marine equipment valued at over N4m, property of Fymark Marine and Oil Services Company Nigeria Limited.

    A document obtained from the court alleged that the suspect committed the offence at the company premises at the Government Reservation Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt, in March, 17.

    He pleaded not-guilty to the two-count charge of theft and unlawful conversion of properties slammed on him and was granted bail with a surety.

    Granting the suspect bail, the presiding magistrate Sokari Andrew-Jaja said the surety must be a renowned business man or a worker in the rank of manager in a reputable company who must be resident in Port Harcourt and must present evidence of tax payment of the last three years and must deposit a cash sum of N300,000 with the registrar of the court.

    Macaulay was represented by in the court by a lawyer.

    The case was adjourned till February 6, for hearing.

  • Fake car dealer docked for defrauding customer of N1. 5m

    A 34-year-old fake car dealer, Oke Oladipupo, who allegedly defrauded swindled a man of N1. 5 million, on Thursday appeared in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, who lives in Block 12, Flat 6, County Estate, Iju Road in Lagos, is charged with two counts of fraud and stealing.

    The prosecution alleged that the accused fraudulently collected  N1. 5 million from one Ologba Patrick with a promise to get  him a Honda Accord 2004 model and one accidental Toyota Corolla 2003 model.

    Persecutor, Sgt Innocent Odugbo told the court that the accused committed the offencs sometime in January about 7.49 p. m. at the Air Force Base, Ikeja, Lagos.

    Odugbo alleged that after collecting the money, the accused disappeared, unlawfully and dishonestly converted the said amount to his personal use. After the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate S. K. Matepo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Matepo ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed must produce evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the Court.

    The offence, he said, contravened  the provisions of sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

    Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing while Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for fraud.

    The Magistrate adjourned the case until Dec. 17 for mention.

  • Three men docked for assaulting policeman

    Three men were on Wednesday brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly beating a police sergeant while on duty.

    The accused — Gideon Nnanedu, 36; Kenneth Mba, 28; and Christian Ifegbu — all residents of Oko-Afo near Badagry, are being tried for assault, breach of peace and felony.

    The three men assaulted Sgt. Benard Achon attached to Morogbo Police Station, Badagry, by beating him while on official duty, according to Prosecutor Akpan Ikem.

    He said the accused committed the offences on July 31 about 9.30 a.m. at Oko-Afo.

    The offences contravened Sections 172, 166 and 404 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).The accused pleaded not guilty.

    In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya granted them bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    He adjourned the  case until Sept. 5 for hearing.

  • Housewife remanded for killing husband with `rat poison’

    A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Tuesday remanded 16-year-old housewife, accused of poisoning the husband to death in children’s remand home.

    The defendant, who lives at Shittar village, Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State, is facing a count charge of culpable homicide.

    She was accused of poisoning the husband, Auwalu Isa to death.

    The Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Fatima Adamu, who ordered the remand, adjourned the matter until June 7 for mention.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Aluta Mijinyawa, told the court that one Ibrahim Yahaya of the same address reported the matter at Danbatta Police Division on April 25.

    He said that the accused on April 22, at about 7 p.m., cooked food for Isah, 35, and mixed it with rat poison.

    “ After her husband ate the food, he died instantly as a result of food poising,’’ he said.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Court remands mechanic accused of defiling neigbour’s daughter

    Magistrate Abdulkadir Musa, has ordered the remand of the accused, pending the receipt of advice from the ministry of Justice.

    A Daura Road Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, on Tuesday, remanded a 26-year-old mechanic, Abdulaziz Suleiman, in prison for allegedly raping a neigbour’s daughter.

    The accused, a resident of Mada Close Tudun Wada, Kaduna, was arraigned on a one-count charge of defilement.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Akinga Akila, had told the court that the accused neighbour, one Ibrahim Abdulrahaman, reported the matter at the Tudun Wada Police Station on Feb. 10.

    Akila told the court the accused on Jan. 26, lured the neighbours eight-year-old daughter to his room and had canal knowledge of her.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused had threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone about the incident.

    He said that the mother’s victim, however, discovered and alerted other neighbours.

    According to the prosecutor, the accused had confessed to the crime during police investigation.

    Akila said the offence contravened Section 209 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017.

    The prosecutor urged the court to remand the accused in prison pending advice from ministry of Justice.

    The magistrate, acceded to the prosecutor’s request and ordered the remand of the accused in prison till March 12, when the case would come up for mention.

    Man in court for allegedly defiling neighbour’s 7-year-old daughter

    A 30-year-old man, Moruf Mohammed, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s seven-year-old daughter, was on Monday arraigned in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Mohammed , who resides at Ayanbadejo Street, Samsudeen, Ikorudu, is standing trial on a charge of defilement, to which he pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Inhonwa, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 25, 2017 at his residence.

    Inhonwa said the defendant lured the girl into his apartment, on pretext of sending her on an errand and defiled her.

    ” When the pain was too much for the girl, she started crying out loud and a neighbour who was passing by heard her voice.

    ” The woman immediately entered into the room and to her surprise, she caught the defendant fingering the girl’s private part, ” Inhonwa said.

    He said the case was reported to the police by the girl’s parent and the defendant was arrested.

    The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News  reports that Section 137 of the law prescribes life imprisonment for child rape.

    In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    She ordered that the case file should be duplicated, a copy of which should be sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Undergraduate remanded over alleged murder

    A 34-year-old student of Osun State University, Osogbo, Akanbi David was on Tuesday remanded in Ilesa Prison by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged murder of his colleague, Amodu Kazeem.

    The accused is facing a two count-charge of murder and conspiracy.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, said he ordered the remand of the accused due to the magnitude of the offence against him.

    The accused’s plea was not taken by the court.

    The magistrate, however, adjourned the case until May 5 for mentioned.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Mireti Wilson, told the court that the accused committed the offense on Jan.16 at about 5.00p.m., at Oke-Baale, Osogbo.

    Willson said that the accused conspired with one person now at large to murder Kazeem by stabbing him with a knife on his chest.

    He also said the accused had a disagreement with the deceased over a business deal which led to the incident and the subsequent death of Kazeem.

    “Both the accused and the deceased are students of Osun State University, they had a fight on an issue which led to the death of one of them,’’ he said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Sections 324 and 319(1) of the criminal code cap 34 vol.11 laws of Osun, 2003.

  • Man docked over attempt to commit suicide

    A 47-year-old man, Akeem Adeyemo, alleged to have attempted to commit suicide, on Tuesday appeared before an Oyo State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting at Iyaganku, Ibadan.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeyemo of Odinjo area, Ibadan, was arraigned on a two-count charge of attempting to commit suicide and publishing a fake suicide note.

    According to the Police prosecutor, Insp Sunday Ogunremi, the accused attempted suicide by consuming a powdery substance believed to be poisonous, on Feb. 27, 2009 at about 3 p. m.

    “As a result of which he was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH) for treatment, ‘’ he said.

    Ogunremi accused Adeyemo of publishing a suicide note, directing that one Rauf Olaiya, should be held responsible for his death.

    “He did this with the intent to injure Olaiya’s reputation and to expose him to hatred and contempt; also to ridicule his profession being an Islamic cleric,’’ the prosecutor said.

    Ogunremi told the court that the offences contravened Sections 327and 374 and punishable under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Abiona Richard, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties, one of which must be a blood relation, in like sum.

    Richard, thereafter, adjourned the case until May 5 for mention.

     

  • 2 men docked over alleged rape of 2 school girls

    Two men — Isiaka Jimoh and Dauda Hassan — who allegedly gang-raped two secondary school students of ages 12 and 13 with others still at large, were was on Thursday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    ‎Jimoh,18, and Hassan, 21, whose addresses were not provided, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge
    bordering on conspiracy and defilement.

    ‎The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused with others now at large committed
    the offences on Jan. 29 at Pipeline, Aboru in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State at about 11.30 p.m.‎

    She alleged that the accused had gang raped the girls who were on an errand.

    “It was an onlooker who notified the police and the men were immediately arrested.

    “Jimoh and another defiled the 12-year-old girl, while Hassan and one at large raped the 14-year-old‎ girl,” she said.‎

    The offences contravened Sections 137 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

    Chief Magistrate A. Ipaye Nwachukwu granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 each with two
    sureties each in like sum.

    She said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused, while the second surety should
    be a community leader.

    The sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government and their addresses should
    be verified by the court, she added.

    The magistrate adjourned the case to April 4
