I rejected offers to get me out of prison – Obasanjo

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday recalled his last days with late Major General Shehu Musa Ya’adua at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, and how he turned down an offer by those he called “my international friends” to get him out of Yola Prison using commando style operation.

Obasanjo who spoke at the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the death of the late Yar’adua regretted that even though both of them strategized on how to move Nigeria forward while in prison, their strategy failed.

He added that his meeting with his former number two man at the Kirikiri prison could have been his greatest mistake.

Former Vice President and one of Yar’adua’s top political associate, Atiku Abubakar who is also the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shehu Yar’adua Foundation was conspicuously missing at the event, but his wife, Titi attended.

Speakers at the event included Sierra Leonian President, Ernest Bai Koroma who eulogised the late Tafidan Katsina for his selfless service to the country, while one of his course mates in the Army, Gen Paul Tarfa explained that the coup that toppled Yakubu Gowon was staged principally against the junta and not aimed at Gowon.

Obasanjo who said he shared a lot of good times with Yar’adua said “When Shehu died in prison, my international friends decided that they will use the commando plan to get me out of prison and they actually did make the plan, got the money and wanted to get an helicopter to get me out of Yola prison and take me to Cameroon.

“They sent a message to me and I told them, if you do, I will not get out of prison and that was when they dropped the idea of using commando effort to get me out of prison. That would have defeated what we stood for. We stood for Nigeria and we stood to face whatever consequences standing for Nigeria would cost us. It cost Shehu Yar’adua his life. Those of us who believe in what Shehu stood for that are  still alive, the only thing that we can do is to allow the struggle to continue because we are not at the end of the struggle yet.

“If anything, we are at the beginning of the struggle. As Shehu said to his son, we want to bequeath to Nigerians, our children and our children’s children, a country that we can be proud of. We are not there yet. May God make us get there.”

The former President told the gathering that Shehu Yar’adua was the best deputy he could ever dream of saying “I could not have had a better deputy than Shehu Yar’adua.”

“When I was military Head of State, we had quite a number of exciting and serious times together that we shared. Let me give you a few of the times that are interesting and some that are also not very serious.

“One day I had cold and the doctor came to see me and I said to him, supposing this cold decided to take my life and I slump, what will you do. He said I will try first aid and I will do all I need to do to revive you. I said if you try that and it didn’t work, what will you do and he said, I will call the Chief of Staff.

“Just then, Shehu came in and I said Shehu, listen to what we were talking about and I relayed to him the discussion and told him, now that you have come in, I am here on the ground, what will you do. He said I have no problem with that, I will kick you with my military boot and say get up, this is your job.

“We had such an interesting time together. We also had difficult times together. We had to put our heads together and discuss on how we can handle the issue of transition and how to implement our own programmers and how to move Nigeria forward. We succeeded in doing what I believed was the right thing for the country at that time and putting in place a democratically eleted government.

“A few years after that, Shehu came to me in the farm and said he wanted to set up a grassroots party. He said from his study, he has discovered that Nigeria has never really had a truly grassroots party, not even NEPU.

“I asked him if there was anything he wanted us to do while in government that we did not do and he said no. I said I pray that this grassroots party that you want to build will succeed. I asked him, do you want to use this grassroots party to get into power?, he said not really, but if that turned out to be the case.

“Many members of that party have remained loyal to the group he set out to build. His ideals and what he stood for both when he was alive and when he departed.”

Obasanjo said Yar’adua lived a life of service, saying “those of us who know Shehu very well, know the type of man he was, the type of love he lived, his commitment to his family, to his religion, to his nation and his friends. When you asked the question, what is life, I think Shehu Yar’adua’s life typifies the answer to that question.”

“He lived his life and gave us eloquent answers about what life is and that is also evident from what we have seen here today. Twenty years after he passed on, we are here with his memory still green and fresh in all of us,” Obasanjo said.

Mugabe: Call to Africa to save democracy from military

The seized of Harare, Zimbabwe by military officers and placing President Robert Mugabe under house arrest after weeks of political turmoil should be condemned by the African Union and world leaders in general.

The  Military takeover in this modern age is a bad omen for Africa as a continent and black race in general and if not quickly checked could become a trend again.

The non-condemnation of the military intervention in Zimbabwe by Western leaders clearly depicts that the Western world leaders version of democracy in Africa is “Expedient Democracy” – Democracy based on post-imperialism governance. The vote doesn’t matter but gets it done anyway.

This was evident in a statement credited to the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson who described Mugabe as a power-hungry despot who would not be missed.

“This House will remember the brutal litany of his 37 years in office: The elections he rigged and stole, the murder and torture of his opponents, the illegal seizure of land — leading to the worst hyperinflation in recorded history measured in the billions of percentage points — and forcing the abolition of the Zimbabwean dollar.”

Even if the Zimbabweans are no longer comfortable with their leader, it should be made known through their majority voices and civil struggle and not through the anarchy of military intervention. It is an act of cowardliness for the Zimbabweans not to resolve in defending their democracy just like the Turkish people but cowed to military approach.

I pray President Muhammadu Buhari could stand to the task of re-sending the strong signal delivered to the military officers in Sao Tome by the ex Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo.  In 2003 in Sao Tome, the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo restored democracy in the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (DRSTP).

Obasanjo action sent a strong signal to military officers contemplating extra-constitutional means to subvert democratically elected governments that military adventurism in politics is no longer fashionable.

As much as Africans condemn authoritarianism, the African leaders, as well as their followers  must preserve democracy and stand to defend the continent against the intervention of the military in their democracy because the consequences will be devastating to the future of the continent.

Biafra: South East Govs, Senators, others should resign to join Kanu – Agitators

A coalition of Niger Delta agitators on Monday vowed to resist attempt to drag the Niger Delta region into the secession agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but said it was time the Nigerian government allow the Igbos to have a country of their own in the interest of the nation’s nascent democracy.

The group said Nigeria must not be allowed to go into another civil war, pointing out that the same antics currently being employed by the group was employed in 1966, when Igbos masterminded the Civil War and involved the South-South in Biafra map and major infrastructures were destroy in Niger Delta with over 15 million south south people killed.

In a statement signed by leaders of the group, the group said it has reliable information that some top businessmen and politicians from South East zone are the sponsors of IPOB.

Those who signed the statement included General John Duku (Niger Delta Watchdogs and convener Coalition of Niger Delta Agitators); General Ekpo Ekpo (Niger Delta Volunteers); General Osarolor Nedam (Niger Delta Warriors); Major-Gen. Henry Okon Etete (Niger Delta Peoples Fighters); Major-Gen. Asukwo Henshaw

    (Bakassi Freedom Fighters) among others.

They condemned calls by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo for the government to negotiate with the Nnamdi Kanu, saying it was surprised that the same man who ordered the destruction of Odi, in Bayelsa state would be talking about negotiation.

They said: “we hereby call on the Nigerian government, international community and the general public to monitor the activities IPOB and her sponsors carefully as we shall resist any attempt to drag the Niger Delta region into the ill advised secession activities of IPOB.

Any member of IPOB that causes mayhem in South East and want to hide in the Niger Delta region shall be severely dealt with. We are surprised that the South East Governors Forum could not call Nnamdi Kanu to order before things got worse as witnessed today.

“We call on the Nigerian government to follow due process and the rule of law in declaring a group a “terrorist organization” as the recent declaration of IPOB by the Nigerian Army as a terrorist organization is contrary to the tenets of our nascent democracy.

“Rather the government should allow them to be on their own, stop funding the South Eastern states with the Niger Delta money, they should be on their own, generate their funds and pay their bills. It is high time Nigeria allow Igbos to be on their own to avoid another civil war.

“We are appealing to the Nigerian government to allow Igbo to go and have their independence without the involvement of other zones since they are tire of being in Nigeria. Nigeria is not ready to go into another civil war. We therefore appeal to the government to allow Igbo to go and be on their own.

All the serving Governors, Senators, House of Reps members, Ministers, Ambassadors from South East extraction should resign immediately and join Nnamdi Kanu to form Biafra government. Let peace reign in Nigeria. It was the agitation of Biafra that brought the last Civil war in Nigeria and we are not prepared for such. Reliable information at our disposal shows that some top businessmen and politicians from South East zone are the sponsors of IPOB.

“We totally condemn the call by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the federal government should dialogue with Nnamdi Kanu. It is totally wrong that the man who destroyed Udi, Bayelsa state in Niger Delta can today talk about dialogue. During his tenure, Asari Dokubo and others were locked up for over one year without trial while he was busy siphoning Niger Delta money. Today he is talking about dialogue.

“We condemn the IPOB attack and destruction of properties in Oyibo in Rivers State. We have warned these people severally that Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region is not and would not be part of Biafra. They rush to Rivers state to attack Hausa community in order to involve the Niger Delta territory in the ill advised secession agenda of IPOB.

“It will be recalled that the same antics was employed in 1966, when they criminally masterminded the Civil War and involved the South-South in Biafra map and major infrastructures were destroy in Niger Delta and over 15 million of our people were executed. We want to warn IPOB and its sponsors to steer clear from Niger Delta region, we shall resist them with everything within our reach.”

  • Obasanjo: It’s shameful we still import vegetables from S/Africa

Obasanjo: It’s shameful we still import vegetables from S/Africa

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has described as shameful the importation of vegetables from South Africa.

Obasanjo said in Abuja that despite the massive land and good vegetation in the country, larger per cent of vegetables used by hotels in Lagos are being imported.

The former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said it was inappropriate and as such, every Nigerian should become a major stakeholder to reposition the agriculture sector.

According to him, with over 180 million people, the country could turn around food insecurity in the country and do exports.

His words: “let’s do something, we must all pledge to do something positive, let us be producers, we are all consumers, but we can do more than that. You are either a producer, a financier, a researcher, an enabler, an advocate, a processor, a marketer, an exporter.

“Let us do something positive and productive. God is at this time, giving us another chance, hence the present situation of our economy, are we going to accept the challenge and move forward, if we don’t we will have ourselves to blame as a nation.

“We have the land, we have the population, we are about 180 million, now let me digress a little bit, almost all the vegetables that the hotels in Lagos are using are being imported from South Africa, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, now population of South Africa is only 50 million, we are 180 million and we cannot produce vegetables, I think it is shameful.”

Speaking on the popular term, food security, Obasanjo defined it as a situation where people have access at all time to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.

“In short there must be availability of food which means there must be enough production or if you are not producing enough you are importing enough to make up for your shortfall in your production.

“There must be affordability, which means every family must be able to afford the food to make them live a healthy and an active life,” he added.

Though, the current administration under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development initiated the Green Alternative Policy, a four-year agricultural development plan to reposition the sector

It targeted vegetables as part of the priority commodities listed for exports. Vegetables were listed as pineapples, pawpaw, bananas, vegetables among others.

As contained in the policy document of the Buhari-led administration, the identified commodities are cocoa, cashew, cassava products such as ethanol, cassava starch and cassava chips. Other crops include ginger, sesame, oil palm, gum Arabic, fruits and yam.

Ambode’s making life worth living for Lagosians – Obasanjo

Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday evening showered encomium on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for his administration’s programmes and policies at improving the lives of the people of the State.

Speaking at the 2017 Annual Dinner and Awards of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Lagos, the former president said he had taken notice of the developmental strides of Governor Ambode, which according to him, are geared towards making life more comfortable for the people.

“I can see the little things you are doing here and there to make life worth living for the people of Lagos. Keep it up,” Obasanjo said to the Governor.

While urging the Governor to sustain the good work he was doing, he stressed the need for the country to do more on ensuring an enabling environment that would boost investors’ confidence to do business in Nigeria.

According to the former president who was also an award recipient, “There are great opportunities out there, as government we need to create ways for investments and conducive conditions for investments to thrive”.

On his part, State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, who also received an award described it as a crowning moment for his career, adding that reaching the pinnacle of his career 30 years after becoming a chartered accountant- a feat he noted as a dream come true.

Governor Ambode, who took time to recall his early days and his quest to become an Accountant, said he was determined to work hard to become one.

“If there is any award that has meaning to me, today’s award is a crowning moment for me, my story and my career.

“When I was about 12 years old, I had an encounter with one of my Dad’s friends who was an Accountant. He asked me what I wanted to become. I told him I wanted to be an Accountant and he said “You? You can’t be an Accountant.” He must have said this because I used to be very playful.

“That night, as I went to bed, I told myself that I will be the best of all Accountants. I determined to work hard to achieve this. At the age of 21, I graduated with a B.sc in Accounting from UNILAG.

“Exactly, 30 years ago, at the age of 24, I became a Chartered Accountant and completed my Masters Programme in Accounting. I have practiced Accounting as a Chartered Accountant for 30 years. 30 years after my qualification, this great Institute has recognised me with the highest merit award, the highest achievement of my career,” Ambode said.

While alluding to the fact that his career success was as a result of his resilience to become an Accountant and achieve his life goal, the Governor said he had made up his mind to give back to humanity for the rest of his life.

“I want to use this platform to encourage others to be resilient. Never give up on your ambition. Stay on your conviction. You will never go wrong. We can all learn from the motto of the Institute – Accuracy and Integrity,” Ambode said.

  • Ooni to crown Obasanjo Ruby King of Festac

Ooni to crown Obasanjo Ruby King of Festac

Due to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s contributions to the successful celebration of Festac 77 in 1977, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilisation (CBAAC) has concluded plans to crown him the Ruby King of Festac in May in Abuja.

Dr Anikwe said the former president would be crowned the Ruby King of Festac and the Patron of African Culture by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja ll.

The Director- General, CBAAC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos that it was part of activities to commemorate four decades after the event was hosted by Nigeria.

NAN reports that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was Nigeria’s military head of state when the country hosted the festival in 1977.

It also reports that the crowning would form parts of the activities to celebrate Festac 77@40 that would start on April 1.

“Obasanjo appears as the greatest, in terms of the promotion of African culture in the whole of Africa and the black world, by the singular effort he demonstrated by organising and hosting Festac 77.

“There has not been any other event that can be compared with it; so, any form of positive accolade will not be too much for him.

“In a rare understanding of what the event would contribute toward showcasing Black and African cultural heritage then, Obasanjo quickly made wise consultations, recognised the international festival committee and other communities.

“He put square pegs in square holes, made funds available and eventually a festival that could be described as the largest assemblage of Black and African people worldwide was held from Jan.15, 1977 to Feb.12, 1977.

“The event was not only momentarily successful; it could also be described as a watershed in the Pan- Africans’ struggle.

“It is to Obasanjo’s eternal credit that Festac 77 covered the entire gamut of Black and African cultural heritage.’’

Anikwe urged other Africans to emulate Obasanjo by doing things worthy of emulation, celebration, symbolism, recognisable and crowning, to earn the admiration of Africans.

NAN reports that activities to mark Festac 77@ 40 would hold in over 10 states including the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) where the Mascot would be unveiled on April 1.

It would also entail different cultural displays that would hold in some states including Katsina, Enugu, Ogun, Kaduna, Akwa- Ibom and some foreign countries.

  • Xenophobic attacks will lead to calamity in Africa, says Obasanjo

Xenophobic attacks will lead to calamity in Africa, says Obasanjo

Former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has critisised South African leaders for allowing xenophobic attacks to continue in the country.

He was however quick to say that, if the leadership of the country allows its youths to continue killing other fellow Africans, it will be a calamity for South Africa and the African continent as a whole.

The former President who featured on Kaduna based Liberty Radio Programme, Guest of the Week at the weekend said “it is understandable to say the South African youths are being childish, but it is unacceptable for their leaders to watch them go on rampage against fellow Africans.”

He however stated categorically that any leader who allows xenophobic attacks to linger under his watch is not fit to be an African leader.

According to Obasanjo who spoke extensively to Liberty Radio on the newly established Obasanjo Presidential Library, no African country can attain development in isolation.

“They must move together as a continent if the desired development is to be achieved.

“What all African countries must remember is that, Nigeria fought for
decolonisation of most of that African countries. But, whether anyone
remembers what Nigeria did for decolonisation of African countries or not is not even an issue, the issue, the issue is that any African must not be treated as unwanted in any part of Africa.

“Any leader who allows xenophobic attacks to happen and linger under his watch is not fit to be an African leader.

“If youths are behaving childishly, then, what is the leadership doing? It is understandable to see children behaving childishly, but if the leaders also behave childishly, that is a calamity for that country and for Africa”.

Speaking about the Presidential Library, where he built a Church and Mosque, the former President said, as a leader of the country, he needed to lead by example, without bias to any religious group.

He said he was raised in a community where Christian and Muslims co-exist
peacefully and he had lived with that all his life, adding that, even as
President of Nigeria, he used to fast during Ramadan and during lent.

The former President however condemn the situation where people now kill one
another in the name of religion, saying anyone who kills in the name of
religion is an enemy of God.

On the fight against corruption, former President Obasanjo commended
President Muhammadu Buhari led administration on the anti graft war,
reiterating that Buhari has not disappointed him, except that he is weak in
    the area of economy.

  • Onovo hails Obj, IBB’s support for Igbo Presidency

Onovo hails Obj, IBB’s support for Igbo Presidency

The 2015 Presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Chief Martin Onovo, has commended ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s call for Igbo Presidency in 2019.

Onovo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, also commended former Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for his declaration of support for such call.

“Obj is the most experienced and leader of all politicians across all parties in Nigeria today. He knows a lot more from the experience than many of us.

“Rotational presidency is a Nigerian phenomenon and it is particularly Nigerian.

“We have seen our heterogeneous composition and we have realised that since power is owned by component groups, to create peace for development,   to create inclusiveness, it must be rotated.

“There is no state in Nigeria, local government or community where rotation is not going on and power not being rotated. So this is the right thing for Nigeria and Obj is clearly right.

“Also, IBB is also agreeing with that, that he would support Igbos. So, it is very clear that this is the right thing to do and this is what we should do,” Onovo said.

According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when it was founded in 1999 realised the need for rotation of the presidency in order to ensure peace.

The former presidential candidate expressed strong belief that the South East region would overcome the challenges of marginalisation with a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.

“Domination cannot be positive in politics, politics is representative, so the South East must be adequately represented in politics of Nigeria otherwise it will become counterproductive for the nation.

“And that is what Chief Obasanjo and Babangida realised and promoting right now. That is the right thing to do, the Imo born politician stressed.

He said that every patriotic Nigerian must support the call in the interest of the nation.

NAN reports that Obasanjo while hosting the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun Chapter on Tuesday said that the region, in 57 years of independence of the country, had not produced a democratically-elected president.

Obasanjo said that the problem of marginalisation and injustice had been a major source of conflicts in the country.
