  • Foundation fetes widows, aged in Ondo community

    Over 500 widows and the aged have benefitted from the empowerment programme in commemoration of the late Mrs Adetayon Alasoadura, the wife of the  Senator representing Ondo Central District at the National Assembly,  Chief Tayo Alasoadura.

    The empowerment was funded by Adetayo Alasoadura Memorial Foundation for the Aged and Widows across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district.

    There was also a memorial lecture which was delivered by Prof. Olu Aboluwoye of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).

    The widower, Senator Alasoadura, who was represented at the occasion by his legislative aide, Kolawole Olasehinde Nicholas in Akue, the state capital, described the late Mrs Alasoadura as a caring, loving and a woman of great virtue, stressing that she was a strong pillar behind his husband.

    Alasoadura said the programme was a continuous one to remember her contributions to the needy when she was alive.

    He said: “The programme began a year after her death and we are doing it again. By the grace of God, it will continue forever.

    The guest lecturer at the event, Prof Olu Aboluwoye, who was represented by a public affairs commentator, Rotimi Ogunleye described Mrs Alasoadura as a role model, comparing her to the Biblical Dorcas.

    Aboluwoye said: “It is good to attend where we celebrate and remember the deceased. It affords us the opportunity to assess ourselves and see if we are doing the right thing or not.

    He, therefore, urged everybody to learn from the deceased when she was alive, by living an exemplary life.

    At the event, cash and food items worth several thousands of Naira were distributed to over 500 aged people and widows across the six local government areas in the Central District.

    Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye said the late Alasoadura was a community builder, saying she had contributed her quota positively to the development of Akure North Local Government Area and its environs.

    “We will continue to pray for her departed soul, the husband, the Children she left behind and the entire family.

    “I represent Akure North at the cabinet, and I think for one of us that had done her part, I think we must continue to play our own role to ensure that we remember her. That is why I said from next year, God being with us, I will contribute to the development of this foundation,” he said.

    The first son of the family, Akinloye Alasoadura, described her step mum, as a nice, upright and a virtuous woman of inestimable value, a problem solver, the rock of the family, saying she stood by her husband in time of trouble and in good time. She was always there to make sure that things were always right.

    “When we suddenly lost her, we felt aggrieved. It was so painful, but since there is nothing we can do to bring her back, we felt that the foundation she established while alive should not die with her. That is why we decided to continue with it on a yearly basis.”

    One of the Programme Coordinators, Dayo Joseph who is also the media aide to Senator Alasoadura said the programme was put together to celebrate what the late philanthropist stood for, saying the woman stood for everything that is good.

    He said: “The late Mrs Alasoadura was a virtuous woman, very decent humankind, ready to go to any length to make sure that she put smiles on the faces of the needy.

  • Security at Senate Chamber porous, says Alasoadura

    The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) Chief Tayo Alasoadura on Monday said the frequent invasion of the National Assembly by suspected hoodlums would persist unless urgent tight security network is built around its premises.

    Alasoadura, who is representing Ondo Central District at the Senate, spoke with reporters shortly after presenting utility Bus to the Students’ Union of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) to aid mobility.

    The former Finance Commissioner said the last week invasion of the Upper Chamber by hoodlums was disturbing, stressing that the porous security around the Senate aided them in gaining entry to remove the mace.

    According to him, such development would never happen in any advanced country.

    He expressed optimism that such scenario would not re-occur in the hallowed chamber.

    Alasoadura said, “We even learnt that the suspected hoodlums allegedly paid their way into the Senate premises, this showed the level of unlimited corruption mentality in the country.

    The lawmaker noted that several times his colleagues had raised the alarm over the weak security situation at the Senate without appropriate remedy from appropriate authorities.

    He called for proper monitoring of movement of people into the chamber to guard against future occurrence.

    The politician said the donation of a bus to FUTA SUG was not a significant event, but to restore hope in leadership and a challenge to future leaders.

    According to him,” I have always believed that in building a great nation, the youths must be properly be equipped and positioned for leadership responsibilities”.

    He said the bus would encourage students’ mobility and participation not only in campus affairs but their participation in other institutions activities.

    The lawmaker said he had raised Motions and sponsored Bills on (Petroleum Industry Governance Bill) Adeyemi University of Education Bill among others which were of great importance to the country and Ondo Central.

    FUTA’s Vice Chancellor, Adeola Fuwape appreciated Alasoadura for the gesture, assuring him that the 25,000 students’ population would support his present and future endeavours.

    The SUG President, Olaseinde Olayinka also appreciated the bus donation, stressing that it came at the appropriate time of need.

    He promised that his colleagues will back Alasoadura second term bid, adding that the bus would be judiciously utilised for the benefits of the entire students in the institution.

    The Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream) Chief Tayo Alasoadura has attributed ethnicity, political corruption and religious bigotry as the bane of development in the country.

    Making particular reference to the book written by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Senator representing Ondo Central said since the early 1960s, political and financial corruption continued to remain an obstacle to Nigeria development.

    Alasoadura spoke on Wednesday as a Guest lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife during the 2017 Distinguished Guest Lecture/Award Ceremony organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences in the University.

    The lecture entitled Leadership: The bane of development in Nigeria was delivered on his behalf by his Senior Legislative Aide (SLA)Wale Alake.

    The lawmaker noted that the Transparency International (IT) had ranked Nigeria as 132nd most corrupt country out of 182 countries worldwide.

    According to him, “as we speak, whistle blowers are responding to the new government policy on the revelation of financial crimes, stressing that mind-boggling sums were being discovered in the possession of totally ‘unconscionable’ Nigerians.

    He noted that Nigerians are now discovering why the country is undeveloped and wallowing in the midst of plenty.

    However, Alasoadura enthused that Nigerians have taken their destiny into their hands by electing President Muhammadu Buhari to rescue the country from treacherous and dishonest leaders.

    The former Commissioner for Finance in the state recalled that in 2015, President Buhari told Nigerians that corrupt officials had stolen more than $150b from government coffers within the last 10 years.

    He pointed out that recent unfolding revelations have shown that the President was right.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain noted that several infrastructures and industries could have been built with the ‘stolen funds now in private pockets.

    Alasoadura urged the youths particularly students in higher institutions across the country, who he described as leaders of tomorrow to think, find and develop better leaders for Nigeria to facilitate progress.

    Too early to lose hope in Buhari’s government – Senator

    A senator representing Ondo Central senatorial District, Chief Tayo Alasoadura, has urged Nigerians to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

    He said the hardship being experience by the masses will soon be over.

    Alasoadura, who spoke with reporters shortly after being honoured with the 2015 Yoruba Man of the year by Omoluabi Leadership Reporters, said it is too early for Nigerians to lose hope in the present administration.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain noted that “Rome was not built in a day” and that as long as Buhari is not a magician, Nigerians should not be expecting miracle.

    He lamented that things had gone so bad with the nation before the APC took over.

    The lawmaker assured Nigerians that the Presidency and the senate are working hard to make life meaningful for them.

    Alasoadura said the senate will support the Buhari government by making certain laws that will assist it to succeed.

    He commended the APC National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his invaluable contribution to the development of democracy.
