Sylva remains our leader, says Bayelsa APC

The Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday, threw its weight behind a former Governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, insisting that he remained its leader.

The party in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Mr Panebi Fortune, passed a vote of confidence in Sylva despite his electoral misfortunes.

Sylva, the governorship candidate of APC in the last election, lost his bid to return as a governor and failed to reverse the victory of the incumbent Governor Seriake Dickson at the court.

But Fortune said the state Executive Committee of the APC met in Yenagoa, reviewed the entire process that led to the loss of the party and unanimously queued behind the former governor.

He said the party was satisfied with Sylva’s peaceful disposition before, during and after the elections in the state.

Fortune added that the party was pleased with Sylva’s doggedness following democratic principles to exhaust all legal means to reclaim his mandate.

“This action, no doubt, makes him stand out as a true democrat and a lover of peace whose only interest is to bring succour to the suffering people of Bayelsa State,” he said.

He said the party further commended chiefs, women, youth groups and the good people of the state for the support they gave to the APC and its candidate.

Fortune said APC assured that it would not abandon the people at their difficult moments adding that the party thanked all APC stakeholders for their support.

He said APC had started a fresh process of repositioning itself to win seats in the next state and National Assembly elections.

Bayelsa exco hails Dickson’s victory at Supreme Court

The Bayelsa State Executive Council, on Tuesday, hailed the victory of the state Governor, Mr Seriake Dickson and his deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd) ‎at the Supreme Court.

Other members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gathered in different groups at strategic areas in Yenagoa, the state capital to celebrate the victory.

Spokesman of the Council and Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Jonathan Obuebite in a statement entitled, ‎”Affirmation of Divine Mandate” attributed the victory to God.

He said the unanimous judgment of the apex court was a confirmation of a divine pronouncement that “for once, the seat of power in Bayelsa will be occupied for eight years”.

Obuebite boasted that even if elections were conducted a thousand times Dickson and Jonah would still emerge winners.

He said: “As a council we congratulate our amiable governor and his deputy‎ for the sweet victory which although did not come to us as a surprise because we knew that with the facts before their lordships the APC had no case”.

“What the APC and its candidate did was to waste their time and that of the judiciary. Chief Timipre Sylva knew he cannot ‎have won that case. All attempt to subvert the will of justice was to no avail”.

‎He also hailed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and  Bayelsans who stood by the restoration government, saying “their prayers for this victory was not in vain” .

He urged them to always support the Dickson’s administration.

The Commissioner remarked that with all the legal hurdles crossed, the government will now be more focused to continue its mandate of quality service delivery to the people and enjoined Sylva and the APC to forget any new form of distraction.

According to him God has chosen the duo of Dickson and Jonah to lead the state and no one can challenge such authority as the power he stressed comes from God‎ and he gives it to those he deems fit.

‎” We know them, those on the other side that pained and frustrated by this defeat they will regroup in one way or the other to start fresh problems but they will not succeed. Never again shall our people be subjected to pain and lack” it concluded.

Oshiomhole has given Edo worthy successor, says Sylva

A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, Friday, hailed the Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole for giving the people of Edo a worthy successor.

Sylva, the Bayelsa State candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last governorship election in the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, congratulated the Governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki, and the people of Edo State on the victory of APC.

The former governor in a statement in Yenagoa signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, specially praised Oshiomhole for “a worthy cause to deliver a worthy successor to the people of Edo State.“

He said: “We send our congratulations to you, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on your victory at the poll. This feat has done our great party, APC, and the people of the South-South proud. It is a cheery reaffirmation of the place of the South-South in the national change movement.

“Special congratulations also go to the governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, for staying the course, despite visible adversity, in a worthy cause to deliver a worthy successor to the people of Edo State.

“You have given Edo people a worthy replacement who would not only continue your lofty ideals but would consistently push the envelope of social and economic progress for the greatest good of the people.

“We salute the entire people of Edo State, who are the ultimate winners of this election, as they prepare to enter yet another season of progress.

“We wish the people of Edo State, the governor, and the incoming governor a prosperous tenure.”

  • Sylva to military: Fish out soldiers’ killers

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the last Bayelsa State governorship election, Chief Timipre Sylva, on Tuesday asked the military to fish out persons behind the killing of soldiers in Nembe, Bayelsa State.

Sylva strongly condemned the brutal attack on security operatives, describing the killers as enemies of humanity.

Sylva, who spoke in a statement issued by his media adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, advised residents of Nembe and its environs to be vigilant, and work closely with security agencies to isolate and frustrate the efforts of persons who want to make the area an oasis of evil and backwardness.

The former governor said:  “The killing of the soldiers is a grievous crime that cannot be excused on any ground. It is a legal and cultural abomination, which goes against everything the people of Nembe and neighbouring communities believe in.

“Those who committed this sacrilege are only out to set up our communities for destruction. They should be fished out and made to face the law.

“We must work with the security agencies to isolate and frustrate the machinations of those who would want to make our communities a fertile ground for violence and underdevelopment.

“As I have always said, the solution to the problems in the Niger Delta does not lie in violence, it lies in constructive engagement and dialogue. We have come a long way on the path of peaceful solution to our problems.

“And President Muhammadu Buhari has shown unprecedented commitment to the peaceful resolution of all problems in the Niger Delta and development of the region. We cannot at this point begin to roll back the frontiers of peace and development. We cannot afford to return to violence as a means of agitation.”

  • Sylva to Dickson: Leave tribunal to do its work

Sylva to Dickson: Leave tribunal to do its work

Former Governor and Bayelsa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva, Friday, asked the incumbent governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to halt his dangerous campaign against the state’s election petition tribunal.

Sylva said Dickson and his co-travelers were patronizing a few online media to cast aspersions on tribunal members and browbeat the court as it prepared to deliver its judgement.

The former governor is challenging the outcome of the 2015 governorship election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Dickson, a candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the winner.

Sylva in the statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, reacted to series of verbal attacks launched by pro-Dickson’s groups ahead of the judgement.

He said that Dickson was frequently using bully-boy tactics involving a series of lies deliberately told to impugn the integrity of the tribunal in obvious fear of an unfavourable ruling.

Sylva said: “In one of the canards about a week ago, vended through a strange group, Good Governance Initiative (GGI), the Dickson group claimed that Sylva was lobbying the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir David Lawal, and other officials of the Federal Government to put pressure on the election tribunal to declare him governor via a “black market judgement”.’

“Another false report, an apparent follow-up to the intimidation campaign run, appeared on Thursday, 14 July. It claimed the existence of an imaginary tension in Yenagoa following alleged “confirmation” by APC leaders, including the national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu that the tribunal would rule in Sylva’s favour.

“According to the report, “Some key supporters of the Dickson-led PDP” have met to plan how to react in the event of an unfavourable judgement.

“Chief Sylva, who is the petitioner in the case sees this attempt by Dickson to second-guess the decision of the tribunal and, perhaps, try to intimidate it, as immoral and despicable. Sylva appeals to Dickson and his men to allow the tribunal to do its job”.

He said that Dickson successfully applied his familiar intimidation strategies in the past, before, during, and after the governorship election in the state last December and this January.

But Sylva said such tactics would not succeed with the judiciary adding that as a democrat, he took his case against the last election to the tribunal.

He said: “As a democrat and firm believer in the rule of law, Sylva had taken his misgivings about the outcome of the election to the election tribunal to see if the victory awarded to Dickson by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could stand up to judicial scrutiny.

“He, thus, urges that Dickson should for once control his predilections for falsehood and violent incitement and wait for the judicial process as it unfolds.

“Sylva’s expectation of justice from the election tribunal is hinged on his belief that the honourable judges would be guided by the letter and spirit of the law.

“Neither Bola Tinubu, nor Abubakar Malami, Babachir Lawal or Aisha Buhari is a member of the election tribunal. Therefore, it is unfair for Dickson and his group to insinuate that the respected tribunal judges are poodles of any political party or individual.

“It is also unjust for Dickson to be spending the resources of the people of Bayelsa State on a desperate media campaign purposed to call into question the reputation of the country’s judiciary.

“It is even wicked, ungodly and uncaring that this wastage is happening at a time when workers in the state are being owed several months’ salaries.

“We are aware that huge amounts of money have been disbursed by Dickson to individuals and groups to do a hatchet job on the Bayelsa election tribunal as it prepares to deliver its judgement.

“We are also aware that certain groups have been procured by Dickson and his men to cause violence if the ruling does not go in his favour.

“This manifestation of politics of anxiety on the part of Dickson is despicable. It is uncalled for, especially, as he is well aware that whatever judgement the election tribunal would give is not final”.

Sylva added: “Finally, no date has been fixed for judgement by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Holden at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with Petition Number: EPT/BY/GOV/002/2016, involving:  Sylva and the APC Versus INEC, Dickson and PDP. Yet, one report was very categorical on “the date” for verdict. This is worrisome.

According to one online medium on Thursday: “Although the tribunal will deliver its judgement on his petition on July 29, sources told journalists that the ‘positive mood’ in the Sylva’s camp was sequel to alleged ‘confirmation’ received from some influential citizens within the APC that judgement will likely go the way of their candidate at the tribunal.

“Irrefutable evidence linking key media aides of Dickson to these irresponsible reports makes this even more worrisome.”

  • Bayelsa election: Appeal Court tribunal to play key video evidence

Bayelsa election: Appeal Court tribunal to play key video evidence

Former Bayelsa State governor,Chief  Timipre Sylva got a major boost Friday in his challenge of the re-election of the incumbent Seriake Dickson.

The Court of Appeal, Abuja, in a ruling  Friday, ordered the State Governorship Election Tribunal to play, in the open court, a digital video disc (DVD) recording of the announcement of the cancellation of the election in Southern Ijaw Local Government by the  Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

Sylva, who is contesting the declaration of Dickson as winner of the last governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), contends, in his petition, that INEC’s REC lacked the powers to cancel election.

The ex-governor, whose lawyer, Sebastine Hon (SAN) had pleaded was denied the opportunity to play DVD when he applied to do so through a witness.

However, the Court of Appeal Friday faulted the tribunal’s refusal to allow Sylva play the DVD. It directed the tribunal to play the DVD in the open court.

Justice Onyeakachi Ottis, who read the court’s unanimous judgment on the interlocutory appeal by Sylva, set aside the tribunal’s ruling of May 10, 2016 rejecting the request by Sylva lawyer to have the DVD played.

The court said that contrary to the decision of the Tribunal the appellant complied with the conditions precedence stipulated in Section 84 of the Evidence Act on the admissibility of electronically generated evidence.

The appellate court held that it was wrong of the tribunal to have misapplied Section 84 to deny the appellant the right to play the DVD in the open court to justify his petition against the election of Governor Seriake Dickson.

It said once the evidence had been admitted, having met all the conditions under Section 84 of the Evidence Act, there was no need for any certificate before any computer could be deployed to play the DVD in evidence.

The court ordered the tribunal to recall the petitioner’s witness, through which he had sought to play it, to play the said DVD in the open court.

It noted that the DVD was pleaded by the petitioner; it is relevant to the petition, and that it also the tendering also conforms to the law on electronically generated document.

The court further noted that since it was admitted in evidence in line with Section 84 of Evidence Act; the foundation for its admission well laid, and the DVD well pleaded in the petition, “it is not the decision of the judiciary to supply any authority other than to follow the law in the circumstances.”

The court said there ought not to be any inhibition to the playing of the DVD in the open court by the tribunal because all conditions prescribed by law have been fulfilled by the appellant.

It held that the DVD ought to be played by the tribunal in the open court to demonstrate that it intended not to make it a sleeping exhibit.

Reacting to the judgement, Hon described it as a milestone in the development of our laws and will go a long way in strengthening the laws.

He said justice has been done to in his client’s case.

Lawyer to Dickson, Emeka Etiaba (SAN) said his client would first study the judgment and then, decide on what next step to take.

  • Minister to Bayelsa APC faction: Blackmail won’t distract me

Minister to Bayelsa APC faction: Blackmail won’t distract me

The  Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri on Monday said no amount of blackmail would distract him from discharging his functions in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Lokpobiri said all the allegations against him by the suspected faction of the state Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by the party’s state Chairman, Chief Tiwe Oruminighe were laughable and baseless.

Oruminighe and his group accused Lokpobiri of purchasing his ministerial slot from the state leader of the party and former Governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva.

But Lokpobiri in a statement signed by his Media Assistant, Mr. Donald Ojogo, said he never got his appointment on the altar of financial inducement.

He threatened to seek redress in court by filing libel suit against persons bent in damaging his hard-earned reputation.

The statement said: “In the last few days, the Bayelsa state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has contended with  some unsavoury moments.

” Undoubtedly, these are orchestrated by an insignificant few within the party and oiled by some external forces who feel threatened about their political future, especially as the APC challenges the outcome of the last governorship election at the Election Petition Tribunal.

“‎From the outset, the attitude of the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri has been to ignore and avoid responding to all such untoward moves and circumstances around the APC. To him, such do not represent the much required cohesion, sincerity of purpose and political maturity.

“Nonetheless, in the view of the deliberate fabrication of lies and misrepresentation of facts on the part of those who have allowed themselves to be used in this blackmail venture, it has become very compelling to state the following:

“The Hon Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri never got his appointment on the platter of financial negotiations as expressly insinuated by the suspended State chairman of the APC in Bayelsa State, Chief Tiwei Oruminigha and his cohorts.

“Like other appointees of Mr President, Senator Lokpobiri was duly considered worthy to be so appointed in his position.

“It is a clear case of misrepresentation of facts to insinuate that former governor of Bayelsa who is the leader of the APC in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva collected money from the Hon minister before his appointment as minister. This is an outright fabrication”.

The statement added: “The reference by Tiwei Orunimigha to statements purportedly made by Hon minister in the build up to the 2015 elections ‎that he (Lokpobiri) never believed in the ability of the APC and its then presidential candidate (now president), Muhammadu Buhari to win election is nothing but an exhibition of either some form of delusion or  incurable  amnesia.

“For the records, the Hon Minister’s political affinity with President Muhammadu Buhari dates back to 2003 when he was the senatorial candidate of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party ( ANPP) fro Bayelsa West Senatorial District.

“He had vigorously campaigned for him to be president then. The assertion by Orunimigha can only be a fictionalised sermon heightened by defeated expectations. It is therefore a blackmail that cannot stand the test of time. It is neither capable of distracting the Hon minister.

“Lastly, as a law abiding citizen, the Hon Minister wishes to state that while an unsuspecting section of the media has the liberty to publish unsubstantiated stories, he reserves the right to seek redress in the ‎law courts”.

Police summon ex-militant leaders over Southern Ijaw poll

The Bayelsa State Police Command has summoned ex-militant leaders and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to a meeting tomorrow in Yenagoa ahead of Saturday’s rerun governorship election in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state and a few other polling units.

The invitation is already generating tension in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whose supporters are left out of the planned meeting.

The police in a copy of the invitation letter dated December 31, 2015 and sent to one of the ex-militant leaders, Eris Paul, popularly known as Ogunboss, asked the former agitators to appear on January 4.

The meeting was summoned by the police command through the office of the State Intelligence Bureau led by one Deputy Superitendent of Police (DSP), Ondo Gbekumo.

The letter says attendance to the meeting is compulsory.

It said: “‎The attendance to the meeting by ex-militant leaders is mandatory as issues bothering on threat to security on the January 9th election will be discussed.”

Also invited to the meeting is General Africa who openly supported President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 Presidential election.

But the summoned ex-militant leaders accused the state police command of bias toward the PDP.

They called for the overhaul of the present structure of the state police claiming that the state police command as currently constituted lacks the discipline to ensure a free and fair election in Southern Ijaw.

They alleged that Gbekumo who signed the invitation letter is an apologist and relation of the PDP candidate and Governor of the State, Mr. Seriake Dickson.

Ogunbos said:”When did we become members of the state security agencies to be invited to security meeting? Nothing annoys me so much as receiving the invitation from a relative of Governor Seriake, Ondo Gbekumo.”

Te Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Astimin Butswat, confirmed that the ex-militant leaders were formally invited as stakeholders to contributed to a violence – free election in the Council.

“‎We have invited them for discussions. We are exploring every medium available to ensure a hitch free election,” he said.

Sylva to Bayelsans: See 2016 as year of new beginnings

A governorship candidate in Bayelsa, Chief Timipre Sylva, has urged Bayelsa people and Nigerians to see the New Year as a new start in their individual and collective quests for development.

He made the call in a New Year message issued by his Media Adviser, Mr Doifie Buokoribo, in Yenagoa on Friday.

The candidate, who called for improved peaceful coexistence among the people in the New Year and beyond, also urged the people to eschew divisive tendencies.

“Let us sincerely rededicate ourselves to the hopes and expectations of our founding fathers and steadfastly endeavour to uplift the welfare, peace and security of our people. We have a perfect opportunity to reboot and rebuild.

“We have come a long way as a state and as a country; we have crossed the bridges over many rivers and it has pleased mother nature to keep us together, despite our fault lines.

“So, it behoves on us to focus on issues that will sustain and strengthen our togetherness, rather than those that will destroy it.

“I wish our state and country great success and prosperity. May the peace of the Almighty God reign in our land throughout 2016 and beyond.’’

  • Bayelsa poll: INEC begins consultation with stakeholders

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will announce the date for the supplementary election in Soutthern Ijaw after consulting with critical stakeholders.

The consultation with national chairmen/national secretaries of political parties contesting the yet to be concluded Bayelsa governorship election and their respective governorship candidates is expected to begin Thursday as part of the wide consultation outlined by the commission.

The Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) which is co-chaired by the INEC Chairman and the National Security Adviser (NSA) met Wednesday to review the situation from a security perspective.

On Friday, 18th December 2015, the Commission will engage with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the Media.

The December 5th governorship election in Sourthern Ijaw was cancelled and thereby making the entire election in the state inconclusive.

Cancelling the election, INEC cited cases violence, ballot box snatching and hostage taking of electoral officials for its action.

Southern Ijaw Local Government Area which is principally riverine has a total of 120,827 registered voters.

Bayelsa state has a total of 663,639 registered voters.
