  • To Chief Tony Anenih with love

    Dear Sir,

Eighty-five years on earth, especially in a country where life expectancy is abysmally low, calls for rolling out the drum and painting the town red. Attaining this age in wealth and in health calls for a bigger celebration. So, I congratulate you sir for this auspicious feat.

A trip to the mortuary will reveal many who are not even half your age cooling off and blank to the things of this world. As you read this, an accident is claiming a life, a disease is stopping a soul from breathing and a natural disaster is putting a full stop to what could have turned out a glorious life. A crazy gunman may also be spilling out all the blood in a young life. I thus thank God for your life. I first started respecting you when as the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), you did so much to advance democracy, even though some mischief makers said you sold out. I was disappointed when you were not on the honour’s list of those who fought for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Bashorun MKO Abiola. You were the party chairman and Abiola could not have won without you. That was my basis for expecting you to have been invited to the Presidential Villa to receive the honour bestowed on Abiola and Babagana Kingibe. I am considering forwarding a letter to the President to make him see reason why you deserve accolades. If nothing is done after my protest, I will take it further to the United Nations and if nothing is still done, I will allow God to judge.

Permit me to let you know that my respect for you went up when you became Mr Fix-it under ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and you fixed our roads, our bridges and our culverts and our drainage system became the best in the world. I was also fighting those who were saying you fixed much more for the government of the day, such as the National Assembly, but I will not dignify such haters by listing those other evils they heaped on you. I simply focused on the positives. After all, why focus on the negatives when as works minister, you gave us your best in terms of world class roads, the types America or Singapore have never seen. I know mischief makers will ask for evidence, well, it was destroyed by subsequent governments.

Pardon my forgetfulness sir, happy 85th birthday. I wish you longer life (you already have long life) and prosperity and fantastic health.

Your decision to show concern for suffering Nigerians by not closing the airports to celebrate your birthday further increased the respect I have for you.  So thoughtful and touching. Only a few imbued with the wisdom of Solomon would have given a thought to the suffering of Nigerians; many with the kind of access you have to cash would have sought permit to close the Third Mainland Bridge to celebrate this milestone. But you were humble enough to wave this personal pleasure. Thank you sir.

For a man who, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), gave us the best political party in the world, August 4 should have been lit. The newspapers should have been taken over by congratulatory adverts from well-wishers. Radio and television should have done nothing else that day other than praising you to high heavens.

Permit me sir to quote your statement so that Nigerians will understand and appreciate the sacrifice you made by this amazing decision.

There is no doubt that attaining a milestone of 85 years on earth is a privilege enjoyed by a few; and, it is, therefore, an occasion worth celebrating with loved ones and friends.

On reflections, however, whilst I remain grateful to God for His unfailing love and sustenance that have kept me all through the years, I am, sadly, unable to fulfill this earnest desire to celebrate the milestone because of the unfortunate recent losses that befell my family in quick succession, the condition of my health and the sad state of the nation that has witnessed so much losses, bloodshed and apprehension.

Nonetheless, I sincerely appreciate the effort being made by government and some influential Nigerians to restore peace. I believe that with prayers and faith in God, there is hope for restoration of peace and good neighbourliness in Nigeria soon and in the years ahead.

Indeed, members of my immediate family have decided to respect my decision and they have already cancelled initial arrangements to celebrate my 85th birthday with pomp.

While I pray to the Almighty God to perfect my health and give me the grace to witness many more years on earth, I believe that the future holds a great promise of wonderful times to get together for birthday celebrations and other festivities.

Nigerians are very mischievous people; one of them wondered why you had to announce to the public that you were cancelling a birthday party. This fellow who has no respect for old age said you were only looking for cheap publicity and he likened your action to those people who issue statements to commiserate with families of people they didn’t know. This sort of thinking is insulting. What do you want to do with publicity when you are publicity-personified?

As a public figure for life, the public deserves to know when you go to the toilet, when you have breakfast and when you go to sleep. So, you were in order when you announced to us that you were not going to have a birthday party.

A usually mischievous fellow, who agreed with your action in line with your status as a public figure for life, said you should have stopped at the losses that befell your family in quick succession and the condition of your health and leave out the nation’s losses, bloodshed and apprehension from your reasons for deciding to have a somber August 4. But I disagreed with him by pointing out that you should have even added that you also took into account the recent losses suffered by the All Progressives Congress (APC), such as the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki, Governor AbduFatah Ahmed, Governor Gabriel Suswam, senators, House of Representatives members and others.

Personally, I will commend your action to public figures all over the world. You have scored a first and it should not be allowed to go unnoticed. I agree we will not celebrate your birthday, but we will celebrate your decision not to celebrate your birthday with pomp because of your love for Nigeria. That is an act of patriotism never seen before.

My final take sir: Never again will any of your children leave before you; never again will you have reason to cancel a well-deserved celebration because of Nigeria. Nigeria will get things right so that you can party and party and party to show God that you appreciate all He has done for you. The lord of host will strengthen you and make you offer more service to free our nation from all forms of afflictions.

    All the best sir.

Sheriff consults Anenih over PDP leadership crisis

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday met with Chief Tony Anenih to consult him on the party’s leadership crisis.

NAN reports that Anenih is a founding father of the party.

The Court of Appeal had on Feb. 17, pronounced Sheriff as chairman of the party, while the Alhaji Ahmed Markafi group said it would appeal the ruling.

Markafi, a former governor of Kaduna State is being supported by the present PDP governors.

Sheriff, after the close door meeting with Anenih at his Abuja resident, informed newsmen that the visit was to seek Anenih’s advice on ways to reposition the party.

“If there are two founding fathers, Cheif Anenih is one. Therefore, as a father, I came to consult with him.

“I came to tell him that this is the situation we are. He as a father who formed this party, should help us on how to reposition the party to the period of 1999.

“Baba has given us kind and fatherly advice on all matters,’’ Sheriff said.

Anenih, a former Board of Trustees Chairman of PDP, who declined comment on advice he offered to Sheriff, said it was a meeting between father and sons.

“I have spoken to my son. He will speak with others,’’ Sheriff said.

Also speaking with newsmen, the Vice Chairman of PDP, Dr Cairo Ojougboh said that the visit was part of efforts by Sheriff-led leadership to re-unite members of the party.

He said that the consultation with party leaders across the country would continue.

“We are doing this in order to come up with a formidable party,’’ he said.

Asked if the Sheriff group actually broke into the party secretariat as insinuated by the party caretaker committee members, Ojougboh said it was not true.

He said that after the Court of Appeal judgment, the court served the police, and the Directorate of State Security Service the judgment.

“Mr Chairman did not break in, it was police who locked the secretariat that re-opened it,’’ he said.

Sheriff had on Thursday evening re-opened the secretariat which had been under lock since May 2016.

  • Edo 2016: PDP leaders are dishonest – Edebiri

Edo 2016: PDP leaders are dishonest – Edebiri

Former governorship aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Solomon Edebiri, has finally disclosed why he resigned as a member of the party.

Chief Edebiri attributed his decision to what he termed “dishonesty of the party leadership’’.

Speaking to Journalists at Obayanton village in Ikpoba-Okha local government, Chief Edebiri said the events of the June 20 PDP primaries were awful and ‘a complete negation of what democratic tenet is all about.

Chief Edebiri said he refused to join either the Modu Sherrif faction or any other party.

He stated that he refused honour the invitation to the Abuja residence of former PDP BOT chairman, Chief Tony Anenih because of what happened in 2012.

“In 2012, he offered me money to dump my aspiration and join the PDP but I declined. But in 2016, he still referred to that episode, accusing me of joining forces with Oshiomhole to fight the party.

“Even after swearing with my father’s grave, he still didn’t believe me. I am a man of integrity and do not take money from one person to fight against another man.

“Not knowing what he might also say after meeting  with him and to keep my sanctity and integrity, I thought the best decision was to avoid meeting with him or any other leader of the party,” he said.

“My resignation followed the dishonesty of the party leadership who reneged on its pledge to provide a level playing field for all aspirants at the primary.

“And we had all also pledged to move with the party beyond the primary provided the primary was free, fair and just.

“There were reports that the party institution gave a specific instruction to party chairmen at the Local government level for members to vote for a particular aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

“ So my understanding is that the primary was not free, fair and just,’’ he said adding that; “I will not blame Ize-Iyamu but the party leadership.

“And i neither  want to fight anyone nor remain in the party,’’ he said.

    Anenih is alive, says associates

Former Board of Trustees chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih is alive, his political associates has said.

The associates said they spoke to Chief Anenih after the social media was hit with rumors that Chief Anenih has died of cancer in a London hospital.

Edo State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, and Barrister Vincent Akhere said they spoke with Chief Anenih.

They described the rumored death as a total fabrication and handiwork of mischief makers.

Akhere confirmed that Chief Anenih travelled to London on Tuesday and that he would be back in the country at the weekend.

Akhere said, “I spoke with him on phone about 15 minutes ago. Chief is well, alive and kicking. We even joke over the matter. It is true that Chief had a surgery not too long ago but is fine now.”

Chief Orbih simply said that the rumour was unfortunate, adding that the people behind it should ask God for forgiveness.

  • Tension in Edo PDP over non disbursement of election fund

Tension in Edo PDP over non disbursement of election fund

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state heightened Tuesday following the revelation by members of the party that the leadership of the party in the state led by Chief Dan Orbih allegedly received the sum of N500million for the presidential election of former President Goodluck Jonathan without the knowledge of leaders of the party.

Nation gathered that the money which is part of the N2.1 billion which was shared by the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was said to have been paid into the account of the Edo state PDP through Hartman Company, belonging to the former chairman BOT of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih.

Nation was reliably informed that the matter which is being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) led the commission to contact the Orbih led Executive if such amount was received in the state.

It was learnt that in their reply to the Commission, the party Executive agreed that the said amount was received and was disbursed to party Executives and leaders across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state for the Jonathan Campaign.

The revelation angered both some members of the state Exco of PDP and party leaders who expressed shock that they never knew that such money came. And that was part of the reasons why most of the leaders called for the removal of the Orbih led Exco.

A leader of the party in the state, who spoke to Nation, “said we are petitioning the EFCC to also investigate how the money was disbursed in Edo state because we never knew about the money until we learnt from Orbih’s response to the EFCC that the money was received. So they should tell us who they gave the money to. We will formally address the media on this issue.”

  • Anenih to president-elect: take Nigeria to greater heights

Anenih to president-elect: take Nigeria to greater heights

THE Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief  Tony Anenih, yesterday congratulated the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the outcome of the poll has put a lie to the doomsday sayers.

He, however, asked Buhari to take Nigeria to greater heights.

Anenih, who made his views known in a statement in Abuja, urged those aggrieved by the results of the presidential election to emulate the selflessness and magnanimity of President Goodluck Jonathan, who conceded defeat.

In the two-page statement titled: “Marching on with Hope”, Anenih said: “A keenly contested presidential election, which many predicted would spell doom for Nigeria, has ended gloriously with everyone a winner.

“I congratulate the President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, on his victory.  Nigerians are expecting great things from him. It is my hope that he will take this great country to greater heights in the journey towards our manifest destiny.

“I salute the statesmanship of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, in conceding defeat, even before the official declaration of results was done. By this noble act, President Jonathan has made an indelible mark on the sands of time. History will be very kind to him.

“President Jonathan has worked, selflessly, to deepen democracy in Nigeria. His consistent advocacy of the rights of the people to freely choose their leaders had earlier yielded free, fair and credible elections in some states of the Federation. Now, a peaceful transition is expected to follow after the general elections.”

Anenih said the presidential poll was symbolic as it had proved that democracy in Nigeria is comparable to any other in the world.

The statement added: “The 2015 presidential election, in which the incumbent president lost to the opposition, has become a source of pride to Nigeria.  It has portrayed to the world that democracy in Nigeria compares to the best anywhere.

“I commend the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led Peace Committee for its moral advocacy that culminated in the non-violent reception of the outcome of the presidential election.

“I am also happy that the presidential election has put a lie to the doomsday sayers. We have gone through the most critical of the elections and our country is at peace. Glory be to God!

“I congratulate all Nigerians on the success of the presidential and National Assembly elections and urge all and sundry to participate in the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, with the same zeal and patriotism.”

He pleaded with those aggrieved over the results of the presidential election to emulate the magnanimity of President Jonathan.

“More importantly, while there are genuine reasons to disagree with certain aspects of the conduct and outcome of the presidential and National Assembly elections, I urge all those who may still be aggrieved, to emulate the magnanimity and selflessness of President Goodluck Jonathan, so that our country may enjoy peace, which is a prerequisite of our march to greatness and prosperity, “ he added.

  • Celebrating an icon, Anenih at 81

Celebrating an icon, Anenih at 81

It is without a doubt that leadership is the ability to transform vision into reality; it is also not contestable that before anyone becomes a leader, being successful will be about growing oneself, however, when you become a leader, success will then be about growing others.

This is where Chief Tony Anenih (CFR), Iyasele of Esanland, PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman fits in. The man has been able to build so many people some of whom have become leader over the years.

The man everyone likes to refer to as the solid rock of the Nigerian politics has been able to achieve a lot in his life that he has become a sort of reference and model to the younger ones.

Chief got the sobriquet ‘Mr. Fix It’ because of his outstanding skills in the political field. Yet, many others believe that it is by dint of hard work and perseverance that shot him to the apex of his career as a high-flying Police officer and also a political success. To put it straight, he has become a living legend to our present generation; and when he eventually bows out, his name will definitely be etched in the nation’s hall of fame.

One area Chief Anenih has also excelled is the area of philanthropy; he is blessed with jumbo heart and robust giving spirit. The great man of inestimable worth and remarkable achievement is better defined by his quiet philanthropic disposition, large heart, giving spirit, boundless energy and endless desire to serve and help the poor and needy irrespective of tribe or state.

Of great note is his insightful passion for the aged. In Ibadan, for instance, the Uromi High Chief singlehandedly erected a home for the old people. Not just a house but one that is fully equipped. Besides, he also spares a thought for religion. Of course, he is a devote Christian and he has done more for the Christian faith, yet he does not bypass others.

Chief Anenih unlike most successful men will not allow himself to be locked in his house like a prisoner because of security; hence he makes sure that he attends to anyone notwithstanding the tribe and tongue of those who wish to gain his attention.

A typical example was given, when he was going out of his gate and he saw a certain man by the gate who was looking dejected, he quickly ordered his driver to stop and inquired the mission of the man who has been denied access to him. As soon as the man relayed whatever message he brought, Chief Anenih ‘blessed’ him and the sad face instantly began shinning again.

This is vintage Anenih which makes him different from the rest. It may also explain his large followership across the country and why his abode has remained a Mecca of sorts. His extra- large heart and untiring giving spirits are the allure.

Chief Anenih’s philanthropic interest has always moved beyond wanting to impress anyone; to him it is a part of him that nature has blessed him with. His leadership persona and extraordinary political dexterity had always assured him of the leadership position anywhere he found himself

Truly his calm ways, simplicity of life, sincerity of purpose, robust giving spirit, religious commitment to human capital development, willing assistance to the poor and needy and readiness to serve humanity are rare in our clime. They are vital to understanding his choice of career and foray into politics after retirement.

Those who know him during his early life have testified to the fact that he has always exhibited the trait of quality leadership right from day one. This unique quality saw him climbing the ladder of his career in a short while after the white men discovered his leadership qualities.

The man they call “Leader” is certainly a cat of many lives, and under Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, has reclaimed the one space he cherishes, in the dark, smoke-filled inner recesses of the cloak-and-dagger world of politics, where he wields effective powers of influence and control.

In July 2005, the erudite politician was invited to his hometown in Uromi where the powers that be of Esanland jointly conferred on him the title, Iyasele of Esanland, thereby making him a High Chief and pioneer Prime Minister and Chief Spokesman of the Esan Community comprising the entire Edo Central Senatorial District in Edo State.

But therein Chief Anenih is an enigma and one of the greatest survivors in the Nigerian slippery political scene. The man has an excellent ability to survive, stay relevant and protect those under his wings. His rare think-tank and strategic planning and mobilization prowess keeps endearing him to high and mighty on the political scene.

Unlike many of other elite in his class who love taking advantage of their position to impose people into positions of authority, you’ll be shocked to know that he has neither presented himself nor any of his children or ward for any elective office. He has always shown disdain for such style of politics.

Those who do not know him tried hard in 2011 when some people besieged him with so much demands that he should support any of his kids for Edo governorship election, he turned the offer down and opted to support another candidate that is in nowhere close to his linage. That act alone won him respect the more from many people.

Hate him or love him, Chief Anenih is a political mega force you cannot shove aside in strategies; he has been giving enormous support to the government of President Jonathan whom he believe will take us to that Eldorado state he has been craving for.

If there is anything Chief Anenih loves the most, it is the singular act of loyalty; it is an open secret that if you are 100% loyal to him, he’ll do everything in his powers to pay back the loyalty; a reason he has had many loyalists at his at his beck and call.

His pastimes include jogging, reading, music and philanthropy. He loves Lucky Dube’s music a great deal. He can also be very humourous when he decides to be.

This is a birthday wish to a great but quiet giver and helper of the poor and needy and committed developer of men and women and communities.

Sir, May you always have as much strength and courage to lead us and, more importantly, a truly happy life. Happy birthday to the priceless gem of our time.

    -Okojie, wrote in from Lagos.

  • Anenih pledges to revamp NPA
