  • Three year deal:Chikatara joins Wydad of Morocco

After a long drawn debate over the eligibility of the Chisom Chikatara, Abia Warriors have confirmed his movement  to Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) of Morocco and the player has signed a three-year deal.

The chairman of Abia Warriors, High Chief Emeka Inyama who disclosed this to SportingLife in Umuahia shortly after their 1-0 NPFL Match Day 27 win over Warri Wolves yesterday, opined that they agreed to sell Chikatara to Wydad after the Moroccan club fulfilled the contractual negotiation reached in February this year.

He said there was a disagreement between both teams at some stages in the deal but that he was elated that the former CHAN Eagles’ striker has realised his dream of taking his soccer skills abroad.

Inyama expressed that Abia Warriors would miss Chikatara but that they have been preparing for life after his exit when it was obvious that the player would take his soccer tricks abroad.

“I want to announce to you that Chikatara has sealed a three year deal with Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco and he has travelled to join his new team. We had a disagreement at some stages because the deal was actually signed since February but I am happy to tell you that everything has been  sorted out between both clubs,” Inyama told SportingLife.

“It was a bitter pill to swallow because we had expected to beat them to wipe away the embarrassment we had in Kano but we lost. We created enough opportunities but we couldn’t convert them. I am certain this will be our last home loss,” he said.

Chiikatara was billed to travel to an unnamed European country on Monday evening but the striker told Goal in a chat that he won’t be travelling again anytime soon because negotiations between Abia Warriors and the foreign team have not been concluded.

“The heavy defeat at Kano Pillars has come and gone as we are focused at the task ahead starting with  Sunday’s matchday 25 clash against Plateau United in Umuahia.

“Although we may not be able to beat Plateau United as many as five unreplied goals but they are sure to take some of the bitter pills we were subjected to at Kano Pillars. No matter how tough the Jos side will come on matchday we must find a way to claim the three points at stake in the match.

“The loss at Pillars was a huge set-back on our continental ambition so we must fight hard immediately to steady the ship to ensure the ticket does not elude us at the end of the season,” said the Super Eagles marksman to supersport.com.

Abia Warriors are eighth on the top-flight log on 32 points nine behind league leaders, Wikki Tourists.

“The player and the club are both satisfied with the contract and he will now leave after he picks up his visa in Abuja.”

Chikatara rescues Abia Warriors in derby thriller

Chisom  Chikatara came to Abia Warrior’s rescue in a thrilling eastern Nigeria derby as the hosts drew 2-2 with Enugu Rangers at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Abia Warriors have never defeated the visitors at home in the league and Kennedy Boboye’s men were far from achieving the trick on Sunday.

Coach Boboye said before the match he expected a Flying Antelope onslaught and it duly followed, as the former Nigerian champions produced wave after wave of first-half attacks.

The hosts, three points behind leaders Enugu Rangers in the table, got off to a miserable start as Bobby Clement found the net from close range in the 22nd minute.

The goal stunned Abia Warriors into action and, predictably, they dominated thereafter, but the sheer weight of numbers in Rangers’ defence made life tough for Boboye’s men.

Chikatara failed to convert headers but Ndifreke Effiong gave the home team a lifeline when he won a penalty for them. He was upended by Orji Kalu in the penalty area as the referee’s decision needed no argument.

Abia Warriors soaked up considerable pressure at the end of the half, but Rangers ultimately took the lead as Chisom Egbuchulam hit a superb free-kick four minutes to the half time break as goalkeeper John Ghaadi had no idea.

The visitors made a positive restart to try to break down the four-man Warriors defence with Egbuchulam going close twice in the opening 10 minutes, his second attempt superbly saved by the legs of Ghaadi.

At the other end the Flying Antelopes’ own defending was less impressive and with 65 minutes on the clock they gifted their hosts a second goal, Chikatara escaping the attention of the defenders to bundle home Effiong’s cross.

    Chikatara on duty against Rangers

Abia Warriors striker, Chisom Chikatara has said he will dutifully campaign against oriental neighbours, Enugu Rangers in Sunday’s NPFL matchday 6 clash at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) sensation who is among the Super Eagles sweating it out under caretaker coach, Samson Siasia for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) double take against the Pharaohs of Egypt on March 25 in Kaduna and 29 in Alexandria respectively recently completed a switch to the Moroccan side, Wydad Athletic Club (WAC). The lanky goal poacher was handed jersey number 10 at the Brotola Moroccan league leaders.

Chikatara boasted that his side will puncture the Coal City side stellar performance in the five-week old Nigerian top league.

“Of course, I will be heading home to Umuahia right from the Super Eagles camp to play in the oriental derby against Enugu Rangers on Sunday. Yes, I have completed my move to the Moroccan side, Wydad Casablanca but will wait till July to commence league action with the North African side.

“Part of the contract deals is that I will continue to play for Abia Warriors until I finally join Wydad so you will see me in Abia Warriors colours against Enugu Rangers on Sunday.

“Well, Enugu Rangers have done creditably well for themselves in the five-week old league but come on Sunday I think they will be there at Umuahia merely to honour the league clash as we will turn them back empty-handed.

“It’s a local derby largely to be difficult as expected but we will come out top from the derby. We must win the three points at stake to chance claiming the top spot so the three points are not negotiable,” said Chikatara to supersport.com.

Abia Warriors have nine points in their kitty one behind opponents and leaders, Enugu Rangers in the five-week old league.
