  • Cook held for ‘killing’ female lawyer

    .Another for robbery

The police in Lagos have arrested a chef Joshua Usulor for allegedly killing a female lawyer Feyitayo Obot, 34, inside a hotel at Opebi, Ikeja.

Usulor, 21, was said to have been arrested on February 28, at his hideout in Victoria Island a month after he committed the alleged offence.

According to a statement released Monday evening by police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) the suspect sneaked into the victim’s room, stabbed her and slit her throat.

Oti said police investigation showed Usulor had sneaked into the woman’s room in a bid to rob her but she caught and resisted him.

After ensuring that the woman was dead, Usulor, the police said, stole her N26,000 and mobile phone before fleeing the room.

He said homicide detectives were deployed to the hotel after the command received report about a murder in the premises, adding that they collected important exhibits for forensic analysis.

“The body, which had multiple stab wounds on the abdominal region and a throat slit open with a sharp object, was recovered for autopsy.

“The autopsy result revealed that the victim died as a result of Exsanguination (excessive loss of blood), disruption of the left jugular vein and sharp force trauma,” said Too.

Although the suspect absconded after committing the crime, he said Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation And Intelligence Department (SCIID ), Panti Yaba, Yetunde Longe, fish out and prosecute the culprit.

“Painstaking investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, one Joshua Usulor, on February 28, at his hideout in Victoria Island Lagos.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to have committed the crime. He said he never knew the victim before and only wanted to rob her to offset his own hotel bills because he had spent two days above what he paid for.

“To execute his plans undetected, he claimed he sneaked into the deceased’s room to steal her money and her phones but she struggled with him. He overpowered her and then stabbed her with a sharp knife on the stomach.

“He used the same knife to slit her throat. Satisfied that the woman was dead, he made away with her phones and a cash sum of N26,000 only.

“Investigation revealed that the deceased was a lawyer who came to Lagos for a business meeting and lodged in a hotel at Opebi, Ikeja,” Oti said.

According to him, the suspect would be charged to court for murder while the casefile would be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

Meanwhile, the command on Monday arrested a robbery suspect at 66, Olaitan Sebanjo Street in Lekki after allegedly attacking one Miss Oluwatosin Graig.

The suspect identified as Amara Ezeodum was arrested after an anti-crime patrol team heard the screams of the victim.

Police said He was subsequently chased, caught and a gun recovered from him.

The pair were said to have been well dressed and appeared to have been discussing from the position they were found.

Medical experts have attributed the cause of them to possible carbon monoxide suffocation but the police told The Nation on Sunday that all angles will be examined on the incident.

It was gathered that detectives deployed to the scene around 8am on Saturday found alcoholic beverages and substances suspected to be herbal concoctions in the vehicle.

Three persons have been arrested by police impersonating officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ).

Kaiyewu Folahan, Akintunde Ibukun and Azeez Kazeem were arrested in Somolu Lagos.

Their arrest, according to police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), followed a complaint from the Deputy Director of INEC in Somolu Local Government Area, Mrs S.O. Akinwunmi on Tuesday.

Mrs Akinwunmi, Oti said she informed the police that some persons at Shop no. 33, Aluta Plaza, Federal College of Education, Akoka, were impersonating INEC workers and recruiting ad-hoc staff.

Oti said the Commissioner of Police (CP) Imohimi Edgal, directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Pedro Police Station to infiltrate the camp of the culprits with his undercover operatives.

“The operatives did as directed, leading to the arrest of the suspects, namely: Kaiyewu Folahan, Akintunde Ibukun and Azeez Kazeem. The exhibits recovered from them included a laptop, 511 INEC Lagos Ad-hoc Recruitment Forms, already filled with passport photographs attached,” he said.

The suspects, he said, were arraigned on Wednesday at the Chief Magistrate’s Court 2, Yaba, for conspiracy, impersonation, forgery, fraudulent act and unlawful possession of INEC materials.

  • MC Oluomo discharged from hospital, travels abroad

A chieftain of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya a.k.a MC Oluomo, was on Tuesday night discharged from a Lagos hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

MC Oluomo was attacked at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ikeja on Jan. 8, and was immediately taken to Eko Hospital, following injuries he sustained.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the Eko Hospital in Ikeja on Wednesday, gathered that MC Oluomo left the hospital on Tuesday night after payment of over N2 million medical bill.

A very reliable source, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the NURTW leader may have left for the United States immediately he was discharged from hospital on Tuesday night.

“He is very fine and has nothing to worry about his health after his treatment at the hospital. Before he finally left on Tuesday night, he was receiving a lot of well-wishers.

“Sometimes, he moves around and sometimes walks his visitors to the corridor, so he was in a sound health before leaving the hospital.

“Few days before he left the hospital, his associates were making arrangements for his trip,’’ the source said.

NAN also observed that there was no more police presence around the hospital, as the three police vehicles stationed there had been removed.

The Lagos State Police Command had said it arrested some suspects and also declared wanted another NURTW chieftain over the disruption of the APC rally in Lagos.

The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Chike Oti, had said that those arrested in connection with the incident were helping the police in their investigation.

  • Police to NURTW chief: turn yourself in

The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday insisted Auditor of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Mustapha Adekunle (aka Seigo) is still a wanted man.

Adekunle, the command said, should report to the command in his own interest.

He was declared wanted by the police on Tuesday for attempting to disrupt a rally organised by the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) to kick-off the campaign of its governorship candidate Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Skypower Grounds, Ikeja Government Reservation Area (GRA).

But Adekunle described the police action as a “frame-up.”

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP), told The Nation 14 more people have been arrested in connection with the skirmishes

“Adekunle is still wanted. Although, we have arrested 14 more people in connection with the crisis, making 16 suspects.

“The command is not relenting in its quest to apprehend all the people that were involved in the skirmishes.

“We are going after all of them. At the end of the investigations, all those involved would be charged to court.

“In the best interest of Seigo, (Adekunle), he should report himself to the police,” Oti said.

Meanwhile, scores of sympathisers on Wednesday besieged EKO Hospital, Ikeja where NURTW State Treasurer Musiliu Akinsanya (a.k.a MC Oluomo), who was stabbed in the head, stomach and hand at the rally, is recuperating.

A police vehicle was parked in front of the hospital.

Some policemen were seen interrogating those going into the hospital.

Those who do not have valid reason were turned back.

Our correspondent was told that Oluomo cannot speak with anybody now.

His aide Buhari Jimoh said doctors warned people should stay away from him to allow them to do their job.

“He’s responding well to treatment. Though, the doctors called for restriction of people coming to see how he’s faring.

“Such call is understandable – to allow the doctors to concentrate on their treatment and to ensure he (Oluomo) rest well,” he said.

  • Driver lynched for ‘killing’ passenger as police rescue conductor

A commercial bus driver was Tuesday morning lynched by a mob for allegedly stabbing a passenger to death.

The incident occurred around 7 am at Five Star Bus Stop, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

It was gathered that the bus driver had allegedly stabbed a passenger who demanded his N 50 change by a bank near Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) office, along Osolo Way.

He was alleged to have hit the male passenger with a spanner before stabbing him with a knife on the stomach over N 50 disagreement.

According to witnesses, the said passenger disembarked from the bus and requested his N50 change but the conductor said he did not have change.

It was gathered that the driver made to move the bus when the passenger dragged the conductor from the bus which led to an argument.

Another account indicated that the driver had boarded the passengers from Ikotun en-route Oshodi but refused to proceed when he got to Aswani.

He was said to have told the passengers he could not continue the journey and offered to refund N50 from the amount collected so that the passengers can continue their journey.

But some of the passengers allegedly refused the condition and insisted that the bus must carry them to Oshodi which led to a scuffle.

It was gathered that as soon as the driver stabbed one of the passengers, he sped off but was caught up at Five Star by a mob that chased the bus on motorcycle.

“As soon as the mob saw them. They descended on the driver and his conductor. Beat them up but the conductor managed to escape. The driver was set ablaze, the bus burnt by the mob.

“The conductor fled because he ran across the expressway to the other side and mingled with the crowd,” said a witness.

Another witness told The Nation that the mob prevented the police and fire service officials from rescuing the driver, adding that the officers were pelted with stones.

“The people were angry. They stoned policemen and fire service officials who came to rescue the driver. They even broke the windscreen of police vehicle.

“People were just running in different directions. It was a horrible sight to behold. A human being burning alive and no one could help,” he said.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) said several people have been arrested and investigations were ongoing.

Oti confirmed that police patrol vehicle was vandalized and three cops injured while trying to rescue the victims.

He said: “The police rescued the conductor from near death. From his account, trouble started after the driver told passengers he could not proceed to Oshodi. He said the driver appealed to the passengers and offered to refund some of their fare but some of the passengers turned down the offer.

“An argument soon led to a fight and in the process, hoodlums hijacked the situation. They set the driver and conductor ablaze. The driver was badly burnt as of the time they were rescued. He was rushed to LUTH where he was confirmed dead.

“We have made a number of arrests and investigation is ongoing. It is true that the police suffered a lot while trying to rescue the victims. About three policemen sustained injuries and their vehicle windscreen was shattered.

“We do not have any report that someone was stabbed to death or even stabbed. Although the conductor said his driver used a knife to defend himself at a point, no one has come forward to report a death or injury arising from stabbing in that axis.

“The command frowns at jungle justice. Lagosians have been warned to desist from such practices. Why should anyone set another human being ablaze and then prevent officials of government from rescuing the victims? The hoodlums practically prevented the police and fire service from proceeding to the location in order to douse the flame.”

  • Policeman ‘shoots’ tanker driver dead in Lagos

There was chaos at Trinity, Ajegunle area of Lagos on Thursday after a policeman allegedly shot a tanker driver dead for refusing to part with N1,000.

The alleged killer cop was said to be an operative of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) posted to Ajegunle to tackle traffic robbers along the Mile Two-Apapa axis.

It was gathered that trouble started after the driver insisted he only had N500 to give the cop, who got infuriated and fired the driver.

Other drivers who witnessed the incident were said to have descended on the policeman who was fortunately rescued and whisked away by colleagues.

The policemen, who rescued the trigger-happy cop, allegedly shot in the air to scare the mob before they took their colleague away.

Not satisfied, the tanker drivers were said to have mobilised their colleagues from other parts of the state and laid siege to the road to Apapa, worsening traffic congestion.

A source said the protesters also burnt tyres on the road while hoodlums capitalised on the protest to rob and loot wares.
It was gathered that some vehicles were vandalised while businesses in the neighbourhood closed abruptly.

As people scampered to safety, it was gathered that many sustained injuries.

According to a driver, Danladi Usman, they were protesting being over extorted.

He said: “We pay N1,000 to police. We pay to officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and to local government officials and above all to area boys.

“The extortion is becoming a burden on us. If we do not have any money to pay, they make us pay with our lives. Is it a crime to be a truck driver?”

Shehu Adamu said they were tired of the reckless killings of drivers by security operatives, adding that they have vowed to oppose it.

Police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) said details of the incident were still sketchy as of press time.

He said: “There was a crisis in the area and we heard that someone died in the crisis.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has directed a full investigation into the matter and at the end of the investigation anyone found culpable will be made to face the wrath of the law. However, the outcome of the investigation will be made known to the public.”

  • Sex in a car in public is a crime, Edgal warns

It is an indecent act to have sex in a car in a public place within Lagos State, Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal warned on Wednesday.

Edgal’s warning followed the statement of the officer-in-charge, Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) Abayomi Shogunle on a viral social media.

Answering a question by a twitter user on whether sex in a car was a crime, Shogunle wrote: “Sex in a car in a public place is not a crime in Nigeria provided location is not a place of worship, parties are 18 years and above, the act is consensual and parties are of opposite sex. If threatened with arrest over above, please contact @POLICENG_PCRRU.”

But the Lagos Police Command differed on the PCRRU’s position, warning that Sections 134 (a) and 136 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015 prohibited indecent act in any public place without lawful excuse.

In a statement by the spokesman for the command Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), the police said anyone found guilty of such an act was liable to two  or three years in prison.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police Lagos State  has been advised by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Ministry of Justice and the Legal Department of the Command with relevant sections of the law as follows

“Section 134(a) Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, prohibits any indecent act in any public place without lawful excuse. The law holds that such person is liable on conviction to two years imprisonment.

“Section 136 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, provides that any person who commits any act of gross indecency with another person in public commits an offence and liable on conviction to three years imprisonment.

“It must be noted that section 134 which deals with offences against morality particularly section 134(a) has it that indecent act in a public place makes both parties engaging in the act liable to imprisonment for two years.

“In the same vein, section 231 of the Criminal Code Act which is a Federal law and applicable in states other than the northern states where Penal Code is applicable also make indecent acts punishable.

“Going forward, the authorities of the Lagos State Police Command hereby declares that the assertion that sex in a car in a public place is not a crime in Nigeria is misplaced as the provisions of the Criminal Law of Lagos State prohibits such acts in public even if it is done with consent of the other party

“To this end, the Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal wants Lagosians to be guided by relevant sections of the law against such acts.”

  • Lagos 2019: Agbaje kicks off campaign with lofty promises

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State Jimi Agbaje on Saturday kick started his campaign with promises to deliver the Fourth Mainland Bridge, Lite Rail and a minimum of a thousand megawatt electricity in four years.

Agbaje also promised quality and affordable healthcare, good education, blue economy with functional water transportation as well as employment for the youths.

He spoke at Ultima Studio in Lekki where he officially presented his running mate Mrs. Haleemat Busari, a lawyer.

According to him, the over 20 percent unemployment rate of Lagos was largely caused by lack of electricity, adding that the state needed 3,000 megawatts to drive small, medium and large scale industries.

Agbaje who said he had continued his quest to govern Lagos despite failing twice, claimed he was in the race to serve.

He alleged that money that would have been used to develop the state over the years had ended in private pockets, adding that his mandate was to liberate Lagos, enthrone democracy.

He said: “Our youths are emigrating daily to Canada and United States in search for employment. Under my government, I promise that there will be jobs for the youths.

“As governor I promise to provide a minimum of 1000 megawatts of power. I know that Lagos needs at least 3000 megawatts but I do not want to promise more and achieve less that is why I said I will ensure Lagos produces at least 1000 megawatts.

“I will ensure that our people have quality healthcare that is funded through insurance. We will revive public education in the state so that even the children of the poor can have good education…”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command said it has deployed riders to monitor and arrest anyone seen vandalising campaign posters.

The deployment, according to police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) followed complaints by Agbaje that his campaign boards were removed by unknown persons.

The PDP candidate had alleged that his campaign boards that were placed along the Third Mainland Bridge which he saw on his saw to Unusual Praise were vandalised as of the time he was returning from the praise night.

Upon the compliant, Oti said his boss Imohimi Edgal directed the Deputy Commissioner incharge of State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti Yaba, to set up a monitoring team to daily monitor and arrest anybody seen vandalising or defacing campaign posters or boards.

“In addition, the commissioner has directed that invitation letters be sent to chairmen of all political parties in the state, their flag bearers, the INEC and other stakeholders for a meeting scheduled to hold on Wednesday, December 5, at 11am, at Police Officers’ Mess, GRA, Ikeja.

“This is to further drive home the fact that there is no alternative to peace and the need for all political parties, their candidates and supporters to shun acts capable of breaching the public peace.

“Constrained by limited manpower, there is no way the command could post policemen to cover all  campaign posters in the state but the much it can do, is to adopt the Aberdeen System in protecting campaign adverts and solicit the cooperation of all and sundry in ensuring the maintenance of law and order.”

  • Man ‘rapes’ hearing, speech impaired teenager

    Others held for incest, rape

He said: “The guard  used to work at a school in Lagos. I will not give his name and that of the school for the sake of the survivor.

“But the suspect was reported by the school authorities that he had been having sexual intercourse with his daughter who lived with him in a room security post apartment given to him by the management.

“Being her first time to indulge in such habit, the girl was completely knocked out after guzzling several bottles of alcoholic drinks. Seeing the state of the survivor, he took her to a hotel at Oshodi.

“At this point, the little girl whom he had completely undressed told him to let her be because she was a virgin but he still went ahead and shaved her pubic hair, defiled her and went away with the shaved hair.

“The following morning, the suspect took her to his friend’s place in Maryland and had his way with her the second time. He thereafter took the survivor in his car and dropped her at the nearest location to her parents’ house.

“The girl narrated her ordeal to her mum and she immediately petitioned the Commissioner of Police Imohimi Edgal who ordered a manhunt against the perpetrator. He was arrested on November 24 by detectives attached to the Gender Unit of the Command. All the suspects will be charged to family Court on Friday.”
