China picks Xi Jinping as new leader

Xi Jinping has been confirmed as the man to lead China for the next decade.

Mr. Xi led the new Politburo Standing Committee onto the stage at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, signalling his elevation to the top of China’s ruling Communist Party.

The party faced great challenges but would work to meet “expectations of both history and the people”, he said.

Most members of the new committee are seen as politically conservative, and perceived reformers did not get promotion.

BBC says Xi Jinping replaces Hu Jintao, under whose administration China has seen a decade of extraordinary growth.

The move marks the official passing of power from one generation to the next.

Mr. Xi was followed out onto the stage by Li Keqiang, the man set to succeed Premier Wen Jiabao, and five other men – meaning that the size of the all-powerful Standing Committee had been reduced from nine to seven.

Those five, in order of seniority, were Vice-Premier Zhang Dejiang, Shanghai party boss Yu Zhengsheng, propaganda chief Liu Yunshan, Vice-Premier Wang Qishan and Tianjin party boss Zhang Gaoli.

The new leaders had great responsibilities, Mr. Xi said, but their mission was to be united, and to lead the party and the people to make the Chinese nation stronger and more powerful.

“The people’s desire for a better life is what we shall fight for,” he said.

Corruption had to be addressed, he said, and better party discipline was needed.

  • Pupils to learn Chinese language

Lagos State will introduce Mandarin or Chinese Language in public schools’ curriculum from next session, Commissioner for Education Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye has said.
In a statement by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lanre Bajulaiye, the commissioner said learning the language would be an opportunity for pupils to speak it and adapt to Chinese culture.

The commissioner spoke after a meeting with a delegation from the Chinese Confucius Institute, University of Lagos.

Prof. Caleb Orimoogunje, Director of the Institute, said the institution was ready to assist the state with logistics to make the teaching and learning of the language easier.
Orimoogunje added that Prof. Lirong Jiang, a co-director of the institute, would help in the take-off of the programme.

Jiang said the institute, as a representative of the Chinese culture in Nigeria, was set up to satisfy people’s need about the country’s culture. She said the language became necessary because China had become the new destination for economic growth and technological development.

Jiang said: “The Institute is prepared to provide Chinese instructors to teach the language and the culture in the state’s public schools as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding is signed between the state and the institute.

The knowledge of Chinese language will help students to further their studies in China and carry out research in various fields of human endeavour as China has become a success story in the world economy.”

  • Drogba vows to remain in China

FORMER Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has expressed his desire to help the Ivory Coast win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations by staying in China and playing competitive football.

The Shanghai Shenhua striker scored a penalty in a 4-2 qualification victory over Senegal in Abidjan on Saturday, and put the minds of all his fans at ease by stressing that he not only intends to stay in Asia, but also to help his country to glory, should they come through the second leg unscathed.

“For the Africa Cup of Nations 2013, I will do everything in order to remain competitive while in China. Don’t worry,” he told L’Equipe before the game.
“My start has generated good and bad reviews but I’ve always taken on my choices.”

The 34-year-old made good on his word, helping his side twice fight back from a losing position to put themselves in the driving seat ahead of October’s decider.
With the scores tied at 2-2, Drogba stepped up to convert a late penalty, before Max Gradel added a fourth goal with five minutes left on the clock.
