Flood: PDP advises FG to be more proactive

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on state and federal governments to be more proactive to curtail flood disaster in the country.

A statement by the party’s Head, Publicity Division Administration, Chinwe Nnorom, for the National Publicity Secretary, on Sunday in Abuja, said the party expressed its sympathy with government and people of Benue over recent devastating flood.

She said that the party urged all agencies of government whose duty it was to provide emergency services to do so promptly to
    save lives.

She stated that “we call on both the state and Federal Government to be more proactive by taking adequate steps to put in place mechanisms that will curtail such level of disaster in other flood-prone areas across the country.

“We pray for the souls of all those that lost their lives to rest in perfect peace and condole with affected families to bear this irreparable loss.”

Flood ravaged communities in Benue last week, where villages, farmlands and food storage facilities were washed away and many displaced.

Two camps have already been opened in Makurdi to ensure that the displaced persons have shelter and received assistance as chairmen of the 23 local government areas were directed to use some primary schools as designated camps for affected victims in their areas.

President Muhammadu Buhari had immediately directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to support persons affected by the flood.

The flood submerged two major bridges on River Guma at Tor Kpande, and Mande Ortom.

Some 11 bridges and culverts were submerged, while the worst hit communities included Tse-Adorogo, Tse-Igba, Tse-Akor, Tse-Terzar, Tse-Abi, Tor Kpande and some villages on the stretch between Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi and Gbajimba, the local government council headquarters.

Buhari’s speech an anticlimax, says PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Monday broadcast to the nation as a monumental anticlimax, saying the President missed an opportunity to calm restiveness and frayed nerves among the citizenry.

In a statement last night, signed by the party’s Head of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom on behalf of the National Publicity Secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, said the speech failed to inspire confidence in the people.

According to the PDP, the President’s speech failed to inspire confidence, despite the fact that Nigerians were expectantly looking forward to a robust speech that could imbue confidence in the capacity of the government to take on the challenges of governance.

“However, rather than rekindle that hope and confidence, that speech delivered earlier this morning can most charitably be described as a monumental anticlimax.

“The President and his handlers missed a golden opportunity to reconnect with the people through addressing issues that have direct bearing to their well-being and those of their children and dependents.

“Indeed, the President’s speech did not contain anything new; just a rehash of statements that already had been made by both government and various leaders of thought across the country.

“The PDP had cause to commend the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for going round the country to engage with relevant stakeholders, which certainly was a better approach.

“The PDP believes that rather than rehashing the worn out clichés about Nigeria’s unity not being negotiable, Nigerians would have loved to hear their President come out definitively to tell them what realistic measures his government intended to take to uproot the causes of perennial agitations and counter agitations that are now becoming a recurring decimal in our national discourse.

“The party believes that instead of always mouthing the indivisibility of this country, the government should be seen walking the talk by instilling confidence in all the people across board that it belongs to all.

“The casual mention of ‘elements of Boko Haram’, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes’ etc, were also somewhat on the perfunctory side and do not imbue confidence”, the statement added.

The PDP observed that the President returned to the country in a week that saw the closure of all public universities as a result of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

“Yet, not even a whimper from our President. Has the future of the future leaders of our country sunk so low in the estimation of our current leaders that the issue was considered not important enough to command a mention in the President’s address?

“To this end, the PDP once again welcomes the President back home and continues to pray for his total recovery as well as God’s guidance.

“But we believe Nigerians deserve a richer statement from a President that was away from them for more than a hundred days during which a lot happened that should have elicited more than a mention in that speech”.

PDP congratulates Adonye on his victory at the Appeal Court

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has congratulated Mr Diri Adonye on his victory at the Appeal Court, Abuja.

Adonye is the party’s candidate in the March 19 state constituency re-run election in Opobo/Nkoro state constituency of Rivers.

The party’s congratulatory message was issued by Chinwe Nnorom, Head of PDP Publicity Division for the National Publicity Secretary, on Friday in Abuja.

The Appeal Court on Dec. 1 reversed the Ruling of the Election Petition Tribunal and upheld Adonye’s election into Opobo/Nkoro State Constituency of Rivers.

The Special Appeal Panel justices led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa unanimously nullified the Certificate of Return issued by INEC to Mr Andrew Miller of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court ordered INEC to immediately issue a new Certificate of Return to Adonye.

Andoye’s election was also upheld by the Election Petition Tribunal.

Nnorom noted that the `joyful mood’ of well-meaning democrats following the Court of Appeal judgment had once again, confirmed that the party is popular in Rivers and in Nigeria.

He added that the celebration of the people indicated that Andoye is popular in his constituency.

“To this end, we again congratulate the Judiciary for upholding the democratic tenet of the majority mandate freely given.

“We urge the Court to continue defending its constitutional role in the defence of the rule of law in Nigeria as a sure way of sustaining our nascent democracy.

“We admonish INEC to stop forthwith from taking sides in the conduct of elections in the country and maintain its statutory responsibility of an unbiased Umpire,” Nnorom added.
