Why Nigerian teams struggle in the continent -Chukwu

Former Eagles Coach and Captain, Christian Chukwu has blamed premature players exodus for poor run of Nigerian teams in the

CAf Champions league and CAF Confederation cup respectively.  Chukwu who is General Manager of Rangers international, bared his mind while assessing the performance of the Flying Antelopes and Rivers United in the CAF Champions League and FC IfeanyiUbah and Wikki Tourist in the CAF Confederation cup this year. Players who score goals and show signs of perfect finishing according to him hardly stay in the league once they have been discovered, noting that such inconsistency makes it difficult for teams to parade their complete squad when it matters most.

“One of the problems we have is that once a player starts playing well, finishes well and begins to score some good goals before you know it he has gone abroad, so there is no stability, “he said

The former Harambee stars of Kenya coach however insisted that Rangers put up a good fight despite crashing out of the CAF Champions league and being relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup.

“Our players put in their best and were partly unlucky,” he submitted adding we however assure our supporters that we will do well in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Enyimba posted what has been dubbed the best performance in the continent by a Nigerian club when they won the CAF Champions league back to back in 2003 and 2004. While some believe that Nigerian clubs need to be better funded to buy quality players others say the display is a reflection of standard of the Nigeria league.

Christian Chukwu ASSURES:Amapakabo won’t leave Rangers

Enugu Rangers technical director, Christian Chukwu has said  that the winning head coach, Imama Amapakabo is 100% certain to keep his job at the Nigerian champions.

“Normally, a contract has a beginning and end as well as room for renewal. The contract of coach Imama Amapakabo is not an exception. The board, government and management are looking at it but be rest assured that Amapakabo is not going anywhere else.

“The needful is being done to ensure he continues from where he stopped, he is part and parcel of the team,” said the former Nigerian manager and strongman to supersport.com.

“Rangers are a big team in Nigeria only that the league crown eluded us for a long time but now the side have been able to organise themselves to win the title coupled with the fact that the players who won the title are young; they are certain to keep the crown in the next three, four seasons.

“Right now they have a bigger achievement in view. The players have been given two, three weeks to rest while we take time off to review the team’s score sheet in the out-gone season with the aim to forge a better plan for the assignment both on home front and continent.

“Of course, we will not want to disappoint at the continent, we are the first to play at the continent but Enyimba happened to be the first to win the title. We want to replicate the first on the home soil at the continent,” said Chukwu.

Mikel one of Nigeria’s greatest midfielders – Chukwu

Ex-Super Eagles’ coach, Christian Chukwu, has described Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi, as one of the greatest midfielders to have emerged from Nigeria.

Mikel, who made his Eagles’ debut in 2006, clocks 29 on Friday.

“There is no debate about his class which I attribute to discipline and dedication,” Chukwu told Goal.

“Mikel is committed to whatever he wants to do and that has helped him a big deal as a footballer.

“He is gifted, talented and he is one of the greatest midfielders ever to come out of the country.

“And for those who condemn him for not scoring goals, I would say the most important thing in football is playing to coaches’ instructions and not what people think the player should do.

“Mikel has been consistent for Chelsea because he is playing to his manager’s instruction. If not, he would have spent more time on the bench.

“And personally, I don’t feel that scoring goals should be a factor for becoming a great player.”

Chukwu is confident that the 29-year-old can continue playing at the highest level for many years to come while wishing him well on his birthday.

“For the national team, he has been doing his best and I believe he has years ahead of him in the Super Eagles. To be honest, he has paid his dues,” he continued.

Christian Chukwu: Make NPFL players core of Super Eagles

Nigeria football legend, Christian Chukwu has said head coach Sunday Oliseh can select the core of the Super Eagles from his CHAN squad.

“I think the coach, Oliseh, is doing a good job on them for me (NPFL-based players). This CHAN is presenting to us the nucleus of the Super Eagles because I believe in the home based.

“I believe the home-based will showcase themselves very well in Rwanda. We’re going to go very far in the tournament. Its not compulsory that they must win the cup but they must present themselves creditably.”

Nigeria vs Sudan fallout: Chukwu asks Keshi to resign

Following Nigeria’s 0-1 loss to Sudan in Saturday African Nations Cup qualifier in Khartoum, former Super Eagles’ manager, Christian Chukwu, has asked the team caretaker coach, Stephen Keshi, to resign honourably.

The African champions suffered a shock defeat to the East Africans in a match played at the Municipal Stadium in Khartoum, supersport.com reports.

Forward, Bakeber Bakri scored the match winner in the 42nd minute to hand his side the three points.

Nigeria now sits at the base of Group A in the 2015 AFCON qualification on one point, Sudan moved to the third spot, while South Africa leads on seven points, followed by Congo on six points.

Shocked by Eagles’ unexpected defeat in the hands of the Sudanese, Chukwu said Keshi does not need to wait any longer but take the exit option.

“This is football for you, Keshi won the 2013 AFCON title and took us to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and everyone was completely happy.

“Now that he has not done well so far in the qualifiers to the AFCON 2015 in Morocco, Nigerians definitely won’t be happy with him, “the former Green Eagles captain told supersport.com.

He added: “When Samson Siasia didn’t qualify Nigeria for the 2012 AFCON, he was fired, so Keshi knows what to expect from his employer with this painful defeat.

“Keshi has no contract at the moment, so there is nothing anybody will lose, I think he knows exactly what to expect, though that decision is left with the Nigeria Football Federation.

“That’s how the coaching job is, ups and downs. At one point you’re a hero and at another time you become a villain.

“Though I didn’t watch the match, but defeat was the last thing I expected. I’m deeply shocked to learn that it’s over for us as far as Maroc 2015 AFCON is concerned.”

  • Keshi should stay, says Chukwu

    Keshi should stay, says Chukwu

With the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) yet to settle the issue of extending Stephen Keshi’s contract, SL10.ng spoke again to former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, a member of the NFF technical committee on the matter, and also on several other topical issues in Nigerian football.

SL10: As a member of the NFF  technical committee, what can you tell us about the proposed contract extension for Stephen Keshi and why it’s being delayed?

Chukwu: First of all, I have to correct the impression and tell you that it is not being delayed. If you say it’s being delayed, it makes it sound deliberate but I can assure you that it’s not. The second thing is that it is the responsibility of the NFF to do that and they already inaugurated a committee to look into the issue.

SL10: So what then do you think is delaying the extension of his contract?

Chukwu: Everybody knows the problems bedevilling Nigerian football right now and that alone is enough to delay so many things from happening. That’s why I said it’s not a deliberate act to delay the contract extension. The NFF have stated several times that they want Keshi to continue and I don’t think they’ll make such statements if they didn’t want him. It’s as simple as that, I think it will happen soon.

SL10: So the way it stands now, don’t you think this delay might creep into the 2015 AFCON qualifiers which starts early next month?

Chukwu: No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. This contract extension we are talking about isn’t exactly rocket science and we shouldn’t make it seem so. It’s just for the NFF to call Keshi and they sit together and agree on the terms of a new contract and that will be it. It doesn’t take a year or a month to do that. Both parties have already agreed to work together again, so that’s one issue resolved. It’s just left for them to discuss terms and agree.

SL10: Keshi told us in an interview that his previous contract wasn’t respected, and he expects that to change amongst several other things. He seems to be making a lot of demands, don’t you think it’ll take some time to sort?

Chukwu: Well, I don’t know of any demands he’s making so I couldn’t say anything on that. But I’m sure these things will be sorted once both parties sit together. I don’t think it’s a big problem.

SL10: So how soon are they discussing the terms for a new contract?

Chukwu: I don’t know. You have to pose that question to the NFF.

SL10: Do you really subscribe to the idea of having Keshi continue?

Chukwu: Yes, I do. He has done well for this country in the shortest possible time and I know what that means. What he has done isn’t something that is done overnight. No, it always takes time. But in just over two years, he’s shot himself to become the best and most sought after coach in Africa. So yes, I want him to continue.

SL10: Let us talk about the Flying Eagles. This is one team that Nigerians have been raving about and many people think 2018 might just be the year an African country wins the World Cup and who better to do that than Nigeria with the current crop of U-20 players. What do you think?

Chukwu: I share a similar sentiment about the quality of the players in the team, but 2018, that I cannot speak about. We have to wait and see how they progress and then we can talk about it. Maybe by the year 2016, we should have a clearer picture of how the team will be. They have some very good players and I’m excited at the prospect of seeing them in the Super Eagles but we shouldn’t rush them. They should grow naturally and that’d be good for us.

SL10: What do you think about Kelechi Iheanacho?

Chukwu: Ah wonderful player that one. He’s got huge potentials and I hope he goes on to fulfil those potentials. I hear he even scored for the Manchester City first team. That shows you how good he is and how fortunate we are to have him as our own. I’m also excited about Chidera Ezeh. Another fantastic player that doesn’t get equal recognition, but I think we should watch out for him. That could be another Nwankwo Kanu.

SL10: Thank you very much, Chairman

    Chukwu: My pleasure always.

  • Chukwu: ‘Big Boss’ included non-footballing reasons

Chukwu: ‘Big Boss’ included non-footballing reasons

Former Green Eagles skipper, Christian Chukwu has pointed out that the senior national team head coach, Stephen Keshi, might have used other criteria in addition to footballing reasons in determining the 23 players he is taking to World Cup in Brazil.

Chukwu also reckoned that the dropped players were omitted not because they were not good but because the Eagles could only register 23 players for the World Cup as stipulated by FIFA. The one-time Eagles coach said that Nigerians should support the team and Keshi in the bid to succeed in Brazil.

“Keshi is the only one that has been with these players and knows them inside out. He must have used other factors before deciding on those to pick to represent Nigeria without causing rancour or division in the team.

“It is not that these seven dropped players are not good but not all the 30 players could make it to Brazil. FIFA demands the registration of only 23 players and they were unfortunate not have measured up to the standards in their respective positions. They are still young and can still feature in another World Cup if they keep on working hard,” Chukwu offered.

Keshi declared that Daniel Akpeyi, Ejike Uzoenyi, Victor Obinna Nsofor, Joel Obi, Nosa Igiebor, Sunday Mba and Nnamdi Oduamadi were surplus to requirements for the Brazil 2014 World Cup which starts in eight days’ time.
