  • Tottenham overcome Leicester City’s challenge to stay in EPL title hunt

Goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min helped Tottenham Hotspur overcome Leicester City 3-1 in an entertaining English Premier League (EPL) match at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Tottenham went ahead through Sanchez who scored his first goal for the London club by meeting Eriksen’s whipped cross with a diving header in the 33rd minute.

However, Leicester City’s players complained he was in an offside position.

Leicester City missed the chance to equalize on the hour mark when substitute Jamie Vardy’s penalty kick — his first touch after coming on — was pushed away by Hugo Lloris.

The kick was awarded after Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.

Tottenham doubled their lead three minutes later as Eriksen collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Vardy made up for his earlier miss by tapping in from close range to cut the hosts’ lead 14 minutes from the final whistle.

That was after a well-worked move allowed Ricardo Pereira to drill in a cross from the right.

After a sustained period of Leicester pressure, Son settled nerves of the home supporters by slotting in Tottenham’s third goal with a solo run from the halfway line.

Tottenham win over Manchester United in front of record crowd

Tottenham Hotspur solidified their top- four credentials with a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester United in front of an English Premier League record crowd at Wembley on Wednesday.

Christian Eriksen gave the hosts the lead after 11 seconds, the second fastest goal in Premier League history.

Manchester United’s woeful defending was exposed again for Tottenham’s second, with Phil Jones turning the ball into his own net after 27 minutes.

The win lifted Tottenham two points behind third-placed Liverpool and Chelsea in fourth as second-placed Manchester United dropped 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking after the match, praised his players for putting up a fantastic performance.

He added that the result had put his team in a good position for a top four finish.

“It’s a fantastic dressing room after a fantastic performance. The performance was great and I congratulate the players because they deserve all the credit.

“The first goal was a fantastic goal. Christian Eriksen believed that it would arrive in this situation. We tell the young players to always anticipate.

“I am so pleased we are in the race for the top four.

“There’s a lot of games to play and that is why we need to stay focused.

“The early goal for us was good so that we can go on and dominate the game. That goal gave us more confidence and belief.

“Dele Alli was very good today, but all the team was great. The quality of performance was fantastic.

“It’ll be tough against Liverpool now because they are one of the best teams — but it’s about taking it one game at a time.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, on his part, said the goals scored against his side were ridiculous.

“It’s a performance that starts with a ridiculous goal. That goal after a few seconds has a big influence in the game because Tottenham can play the way they like to play.

“In the end, we played against a very good team. Both goals were ridiculous goals.

“The first goal is an accumulation of mistakes in spite of the fact that everything happened so fast. My players have watched the Tottenham kick-off many, many times.

“It was a really, really bad goal. After the first goal the team had a good reaction — we were there and tried to create.

“The second goal mentally kills the team. A team to win matches needs to score goals and also defend well — on this occasion we were very bad.’’

  • Pochettino still loves Saints

    Pochettino still loves Saints

Pochettino still loves SaintsMauricio Pochettino says he still ‘loves’ Southampton despite leading new club Tottenham to a victory over them on Sunday.

Spurs ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Christian Eriksen’s first-half goal in what the Argentine admitted was an emotional game for him.

Pochettino left Southampton in the summer after an 18-month spell in charge and Sunday’s game represented the first meeting of the two clubs since the switch.

After it, he confirmed his gratitude to the Saints for giving him a chance in English football and elaborated on what a tough decision it had been to move.

“There was no extra pressure,” he said. “It was an emotional game for me. I love Southampton, I love the people in Southampton.

“It was a great 18 months for me in my life and my family and was a very tough decision. I am happy for the performance of the team but it was emotional for me.

“I still love Southampton and maybe I can understand but this is football. I do not change my feeling, nothing about Southampton.

“For me it was a great moment, a great period of 18 months and always I will be grateful to Southampton Football Club and the people in Southampton.”

The future focus for Pochettino though, is solely Tottenham and he was pleased to see his new team adapting to the high-pressing, attacking style he implemented so successfully on the south coast.

“I am very happy and I congratulate the players who made a good job,” Pochettino said. “We are still improving. Three months in charge with a new philosophy.

“I am very happy to get the three points and happy with the performance and happy with the way that the team played. This is what we want. I think the team deserved to win.”
