    Red wine Christmas: Pamper yourself

Babes, but why…? Why did they have to make it mandatory for us to wear a red dress?”

Those were the words of Tinu, the geologist, who came out of her room that Monday evening, complaining about the choice of colour for the estate’s ‘Red wine Christmas’ party, grabbed a cup of water and walked back in still fuming about the matter.

“What if somebody does not have one? What if I didn’t have one? I would now be forced to order for one by force … imagine…!”  Hello o … Evelyn, why are you not talking?” quizzed the angry Tinu, who was somewhat suspicious of my silence.

But Tinu’s complaint was the last thing on my mind as I busied myself with the bowl of catfish pepper soup in front of me. The head was like a hard knot I needed to crack – in fact, the entire dish was a mystery to me. With every sip, I tried to decipher the ingredients, particularly the spices, used in preparing it.

My silence seemed to worry her as she poked her head from inside the room and said: “Evelyn …, no be you I dey talk to. Wetin you dey do sef?”

“Hmmm…so sorry my sister,” I apologised as I caught my breath after swallowing a large chuck of fish. “This pepper soup want finish me. Na wetin you take cook am?”

The words seemed to draw a smile on her face and for one minute, it took her attention from the red dress issue, compelling her to explain the process and just as she concluded, the doorbell rang. It was Sexy Jola and Ada. And they were looking fabulously gorgeous – all in red dresses.

“See fine babes! Gals, you fine. I love your outfit,” I praised.

“What are you girls doing? The party has started downstairs; and Christabel, the Fashionista and Tamara have outdone themselves. Everything is on point. Oya na make we dey go,” urged Jolaolu. But on seeing my plate, she joined me at the dinning and raised the alarm over my plate.

“This one na cheating o. Tinu, I thought we were very close. How come na only Evelyn dey enjoy this banquet?”

“No vex, I still have some in the pot. I will pack some for you after the party,” pleaded Tinu.

“Pack for me too o. No be only Jola like better thing,” Ada interjected and joined us at the table.

“I will, dear. Before you walked in I was complaining to Evelyn about the choice of colour for the dress. They should have just left it open and asked that we wear an evening dress or something formal …” and so began another session of complaint by Tinu.

“I think we ladies should look beyond the colour to what inspired the party. Let’s just relax and unwind and pamper ourselves and share happy moments with our loved ones. That’s my take on the whole thing o,” Ada offered.

“I agree with you, Ada. Abeg Tinu relax joor,” I urged.

Reiterating my words, Jola stated: “I too didn’t like them mandating us to wear red dress. And what is this thing about the colour red that people usually associate with Christmas that made them choose it as a colour to wear sef? I didn’t like it initially. But then my husband reminded me of one red dress I haven’t worn in a long while. And after seeing the sparkle in his eyes when I wore it, I knew tonight na tonight. I forgot about the reason I was fusing in the first place,” laughed Jola. We laughed too, stood up and left for the party.

  • Nigerians skip ‘luxury’ items in Christmas celebration

Nigerians skip ‘luxury’ items in Christmas celebration

Faced with prospects of bleak Christmas and New Year celebrations forced by the asphyxiating cost of basic food items, many Nigerians are literally between the rock and the hard place with regards to coping with the hard times.

Checks by The Nation show that few days to Christmas and New Year celebrations, soaring inflation has pushed prices of most staple food items beyond the reach of most Nigerians, putting them in quandary over how to enjoy the yuletide.

According to data from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), consumer inflation rose 18-year high on surging food prices, reaching 28.20 per cent in November from 27.33 per cent in October, this year.

Food inflation, which accounts for the bulk of Nigeria’s inflation basket, rose to 32.84 per cent last month from 31.52 per cent a month earlier.

Accordingly, across the country, prices of basic food items like rice, beans, garri, tomato, vegetable oil, noodles, yam, bread, chicken, meat, condiments for making stew such as maggi, curry, time; and even sachet water, more popularly called ‘pure water,’ have skyrocketed.

For instance, the price of a 50 kg bag of foreign rice ranges between N65, 000 and N70, 000, while a local brand goes for as much as N55, 000. A 50kg bag of Oloyin beans cost between N60, 000 and N70, 000. A tuber of Abuja yam sells for between N1, 000 and N3, 000. Two packs of sachets water (pure water) cost N50; a bag goes for N300.

Boxed to a corner by the exorbitant cost of these items, especially during this festive season, many families, who are already grappling with low purchasing power, besides the sudden scarcity of naira notes, are weighting other options, including deleting some of the ‘luxury’ food items from their menu list and opting for alternatives.

For instance, a banker, Mrs. Funmilayo Oyinlola, has sworn never to have anything to do with rice this festive season because of the high cost of the commodity.

She told The Nation that she had discussed with her children that it wouldn’t make sense to eat rice and chicken and forgo their education. “l have a young family with four children and I had to make them understand why rice would be missing from the menu table this time

“In place of rice, I promised them a good pot of soup with pounded yam. I can’t see myself buying rice at this time, so l will wait till January or February to buy. It’s sad that our government is not empathetic to the average Nigerian family. Though l can afford it, l see it as a waste of resources,” Mrs. Oyinlola said.

Also lamenting, a couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Sunday, said they would look for alternative food this period as they can’t afford rice. Mr. James said their rent would be due by February, so the family could not feast on the ‘expensive habit’ of cooking rice this yuletide  to the detriment of their comfort.

He, however, made a passionate plea on the Federal Government to intervene and possibly share rice and other expensive food items as palliatives to families who couldn’t afford them because of their high cost.

After taking a critical look at the hike in the prices of food items in the market, especially rice, an author, Kennedy Ambrose, also swore his family would consider other food options besides Africa’s number one staple meal – rice.

“I will never buy a bag of rice for N65, 000. There are other things for my family to eat like ponded yam, and plantain. But I’ll never bring myself to buying a bag of rice for that amount,” Ambrose stated irately.

Also lamenting, a Lagos-based lawyer, Joseph Adekunle, asked: “How on earth are you going to celebrate Christmas in the midst of binding constraints caused by high price of basic food items? “Now that a fowl is even harder to slaughter, rice is like gold, costing nearly N70, 000 for a 50kg bag. It is survival and not merriment because the poor cannot afford it,” he stated.

Adekunle maintained that while many small businesses, employees of private companies, and even civil servants are struggling daily with meagre salaries, with no sign of relief in sight, only a few organisations have managed to increase staff salaries in response to the high cost of living brought on by high inflation.

A businessman, who simply identified himself as Richards, said he anticipated the harsh economic reality in the country due to the twin effect of the devaluation of the naira and rising inflation.

“I could tell from the way the naira was losing value and prices were skyrocketing that this December would be difficult,” Richards said, revealing that as a way of getting round the crisis, “I paid someone to buy and raise broiler chicks for me at her home. She has space in her compound.

“The chicks were quite cheap back then. It paid off. They are really big now and ready for consumption. So, my Christmas and New Year chickens are set. “As for rice, I always buy in bulk. I still have a substantial quantity from the full bag I bought some months back, so I’m covered for the yuletide.”

For Martha Okezie, a mother of five, Christmas clothes are off the shopping list for the time being. Besides, most tailors, according to her, are less busy due to low patronage occasioned by the harsh economy.

“Who is sewing new cloths again if not Aso-Ebi, when fairly-used outfits and even the Nigeria-made (Aba) wears have now saturated the market and are also cheaper? Okezie quizzed.

A father of five, Mr. Darius Ating, however, cautioned that Nigerians shouldn’t be carried away by the festivities, because the economy usually bites hardest in the first few months of every New Year, particularly January.

He said in light of the fact that parents will need to pay for their children’s and wards’ tuition, as well as other required expenses, Nigerians should make the most of what they have and save money for that occasion.

However, the Federal Government is not unaware of the challenging times Nigerians are faced with especially with regards to high cost of living hence, the President Bola Tinubu-led administration recently offered a form of succor for Nigerians who wish to travel this festive season.

The President approved a 50 per cent reduction in inter-state transport fares and free train rides for those travelling between December 21, 2023, and January 4, 2024.

The Federal Government, through the Chairman, Inter-ministerial Committee on the Presidential Intervention on Public Transportation, Dr. Dele Alake, announced the plan to subsidise all mini and luxury buse fares for ease of transportation for citizens willing to travel during the festive holidays on Wednesday, December, 20, 2023.

“President Tinubu wants Nigerians to be able to travel within Nigeria to wherever they want to go to meet their loved ones without the extra burden of paying exorbitantly for inter-state public transportation,” Dr. Alake said.

He, however, said air travel was not included in the initiative because it only aims to benefit the masses, stating: “The initiative is for the masses. Air transport is a luxury. The masses don’t use air transport. So they are our main target.”

While many praised President Tinubu for his timely intervention, some others pleaded for expansion of the designated routes beyond 28.

  • Has Christmas lost its true essence?

Has Christmas lost its true essence?

    • By Chiedu Uche Okoye

Sir: In Nigeria, the onset of harmattan, a period of cold weather, precedes Christmas. It is that period of the year when we muffle ourselves in layers of clothes to protect ourselves from the biting cold at night. And when we hang our clothes on the line, they will dry quickly.

Christmas announces its nearness with other characteristic signs. It makes our lips chapped; and skin dry. To mitigate the effects of the harmattan season on us, we moisten our lips with lip-gloss and rub Vaseline cream on our skin to prevent them from becoming coarse.

Christmas has been celebrated for centuries of years by Christians and non-Christians in many countries of the world. Some historical stories have it that it was an ancient Greek festival that was Christianised to Christmas to make it acceptable to practitioners of Christianity. Other Bible scholars posit that Christmas is the remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, who was born more than two thousand years ago in Nazareth.

In today’s world, Christmas is the most celebrated as well as the most popular religious festival. But why do billions of people, who profess diverse religious faiths, celebrate Christmas? The reason for their celebration of Christmas is not difficult to find. Jesus Christ, whose birthday we mark on December 25, was one of the greatest religious figures, who walked the face of the earth. And the extra-ordinariness of His birth, the great teachings He espoused, and the miracles He performed, all commend us to commemorate His birthday.

However, today, not all members of the different sects of Christianity celebrate Christmas to worship and revere Jesus Christ. There are endless disputations regarding His exact date of birth. Christians who do not commemorate His birth argue that He was not born on December 25, citing historical and climatic facts. And the Jehovah’s Witnesses who have incredible imaginings about earthly paradise posit that Jesus Christ did not give us command to celebrate His birthday.

But the more worrisome thing about the practitioners of Christianity is that they engage in acts that negate the teachings of Jesus Christ.

As the adherents of the Christian faith have deviated from the practice of true Christianity, our celebration of Christmas has lost its true essence. Christmas is no longer the time for the remembrance of the birthday of Jesus Christ, a man whose death will guarantee us eternal life if we exercise faith in Him and obey His commands. And Christmas is no longer the time for well-heeled people to show empathy to the poor and the under-privileged people in our society as directed by Jesus Christ.

But sadly, over the years, our celebration of Christmas has taken a sinister and worldly hue and dimension. People commit all manner of heinous crimes to acquire money with which they will celebrate Christmas in flamboyant styles. While some people abduct other people for ransom, others divert public money entrusted in their care into their private pockets to raise money for their celebration of Christmas. And there are people who engage in ritual killings to make money for Christmas celebration.

As we commemorate the birthday of Jesus Christ, let us ponder on the symbolisms of Christmas. And let us reflect on Jesus Christ’s teachings, which cover all areas of human life. Our doing the aforementioned things will illumine our lives with hope, imbue us with faith, and give us knowledge that will make us better human beings and Christians.

Merry Christmas celebration and happy New Year in advance.

According to George fondly called ‘OMOGEYE’ this is a way for him to give back to his constituents who gave him their mandate willingly across party affiliations.

He said: “It is my own little way of giving back to my community, it is the festive period and this is just a way to give back to the people.

“A bag of rice is now 57,000 naira in the market and the one distributed here is an imported rice 683 bags in all. The country is hard everybody knows that, people are hungry so we need to find one way or the other to cater for their needs.”

George however, urges well-meaning Nigerians to give to those who are less privileged in order to make this yuletide a memorable one for all.

He added: “In our own little way, we need to live in peace with one another. Honestly the country is in a mess so let alone the inflation rate, we should find a way to play our own role in giving succour to people, I wish them merry Christmas and happy new year in advance, we need peace, unity and love.”
