Kano: Two die, as Police, drug dealers clash at Sabon Gari market

Two people were said to have lost their lives, while some others suffered varying degrees of injury, following a bloody clash between drugs dealers and Security Agencies, including the State Police Force, Kano State Transport Road Agency (KAROTA), Civil Defence and Hisbah in the commercial city of Kano.

The security agencies were said to have reportedly stormed the Sabon Gari market, Kano and impounded large quantities of drugs and hospital equipment been sold in the market.

Reacting to the development, the Caretaker Chairman of the Nigeria Association of Patent and Drug Dealers Association (NAPDDA), Nnamdi Dozie, who made the disclosure, said the unarmed drug dealers confronted the Security operatives, who invaded the market on the claims that the dealers were involved in the sale of fake and unregistered drugs in the market.

While describing the allegations as stage-managed, so as to tarnish the image of the drug dealers and their businesses, Dozie however called on the Kano State Government, including the Emirate Council to intervene, so as to amicably resolve the dispute.

According to Dozie, numerous efforts by the Drug dealers to table their petition before the authorities proved futile, explaining that the combined security operatives cordoned the market, preventing sellers and buyers from gaining entry into the market.

Also, Dozie alleged that the police, alongside other security agencies, not only barricaded the market but prevented buyers and sellers from gaining entry into and out of the market.

Apart from that, he alleged that the Security operatives also harassed them with the butt of their guns, lamenting that in the ensuing scuffle, two people lost their lives.

”There is no way that they can fight and defeat the government but we are only pleading for the appropriate authorities to tamper justice with mercy. We are not selling banned drugs, as claimed by the security operatives. We are selling genuine drugs.”

Meanwhile, the drug and hospital equipment dealers in the market have expressed dismay over the ill-treatment meted on them by security agencies.

”What really happened is that, as soon as you gain entry into the market, with your goods, the security agencies will impound and seize the goods. Sometimes, they will not care to screen the goods one is carrying, whether it is among banned goods or not. They seize products, ranging from cotton wool to powder, as well as allegedly collect money from sellers.”

”For me, I do not deal on drugs but only sell disposable and hospital equipment. The bottom line is that all the security operatives don’t care.’ We have agencies that can sanitize the market, such as NAFDAC, NDLEA but certainly not the police, who invaded the market vicinity when people started arguing and started shooting into the air. The expended about 24 cartridges, at the end of which two people died.”

Contacted, the Police Command spokesman, DSP Musa Magaji Majiya, said investigations have commenced to unravel the cause of the clash between security agents and the traders.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has advised Nigerians to be security conscious and conversant with their environment, especially during the Yuletide.

Spokesman for the Enugu State Command Denny Iwuchukwu gave the advice yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

He said: “Security begins with each individual, while security agencies are to intervene where the need arises.

“Our people are not security conscious and they often times don’t know what to do when there is a breach in security.

“People need to know their environment and the people living within it.

“They need to be in the know when strange faces and objects come into their environment and know how to report or approach security agencies.

“They also need to read and monitor trends and developments in their environment.

“It is imperative that people know the emergency phone numbers in their area or state, to call for help at any time and give clear description and locations to security operatives.”

Iwuchukwu said NSCDC would deploy its personnel to man government infrastructure and public places during the Yuletide.

“We will deploy uniformed and plain-clothes officers in the state to ensure security before, during and after the Yuletide.

Civil Defence arrests 10 for alleged illegal mining

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday paraded 10 persons for alleged involvement in illegal sand mining at Iyagbe in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

Afeez Idris, John Okon, Dare Bode, Bethel Gabriel, Bashir Sulaimon, Adekunle Akinbami, Jamiu Jinadu, Amos Adeyemi, Festus Fagbayi and Alaba George were arrested last Friday during a joint operation by officials of NSCDC and  Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals.

Recovered from the suspects who could not provide documents to back up their activity were a speedboat engine and four motor batteries.

The suspects denied any wrongdoing, insisting that they were earning a living from sand dredging.

According to Akinbami, they were working for a dredging company when they were arrested.

He said: “We were doing our normal work when the officials came in two boats and arrested us. My arrest is unlawful. I am surprised to hear that our operation is illegal. I have been working for the company for two years now. I collect N35,000 monthly.”

Fagbayi claimed that he was lured into sand dredging because of scarcity of fish in the lagoon.

He said: “I am a fisherman. It was scarcity of fish in the river that made me to work with the miners. I only hire my boat to them and I collect N2,000 per trip. I saw anything wrong in what they are doing. I felt it’s a normal job.”

Jinadu who claimed he joined the company a few weeks ago, said it was his last resort since his fishing business was no longer lucrative.

He said: “I joined the business because I no longer make enough money from fishing. The money I make could not feed my family and I needed additional source of income. Besides, I didn’t know it was an offence to dredge sand for the company.”

NSCDC Commandant Tajudeen Balogun said the agency would sustain its clampdown on illegal miners and other economic saboteurs across the state.

He said: “The suspects engaged in illegal mining as against the rules and regulations of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel. They were involved in the excavation of sand without having the necessary papers. Four pieces of motor batteries, one speed boat engine and one life jacket were recovered at the scene.”

An official from the Solid Minerals Ministry, Olugbenga Ajayi, who was at the scene said there was a directive from the Minister, Kayode Fayemi, to allow only registered miners operate.

  • Civil Defence seeks Nigerians’ cooperation to curb kidnapping, other crimes

Civil Defence seeks Nigerians’ cooperation to curb kidnapping, other crimes

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged Nigerians to assist security agencies to combat kidnapping and criminal activities by giving relevant information on them.

NSCDC assured the public informants that any information given to them would be treated as classified and make sure that the their identities remains undisclosed.

Speaking with The Nation, NSCDC Lagos Commandant Tajudeen Balogun said the peoples’ supports would go a long way to rid the society of criminal elements.

“When information is made available to security officials, it would help reduce and possibly stop incidences such as kidnapping,” he said.

According to him, intelligent gathering of information is the heart beat and starting point for all security operatives.

He said security is now everybody’s business, noting that “we all must work seriously on confidentiality, integrity, credibility and do our best to support the Federal and Lagos State governments in the area of security.”

He said it is now a thing of the past to be afraid of providing information on insecurity alert, noting that the public can feel free to share any information available and their security will be guaranteed.

“The public has a role to play in fighting crime and criminality by providing the security agencies with useful information. The public needs to write authentically and officially complain and we will act on it; we will gather our facts together, investigate and make sure that justice is done. We will get the legal department to do what is appropriate and correct what is wrong,” he said.

He noted that insecurity is a big challenge globally, adding that all security operatives are working as a team to combat crime.

He affirmed that NSCDC is putting all effort in place to provide security anywhere there is insecurity.

He said NSCDC is working with other security agencies to free a Lagos monarch, Oniba of Iba Land, Oba Yushau Oseni, from abductors.

The Commandant however noted that NSCDC is not depending on the general public alone.

“We go for special intelligent training that would enable us notice what a normal individual would not be cautious of, and we are able to see and act on them.  But, additional information from the masses will help us to do our job better, because we cannot be everywhere at the same time,” he said.

  • House dismisses Police, Civil Defence’s opposition

•Adopts establishment of Nigerian Peace Corps

The House of Representatives has dismissed the opposition of the Nigerian Police Force  (NPF) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NCDSC) as baseless.

The Lower Chamber also adopted a bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC).

This followed the clause-by-clause consideration and adoption of the report of the bill sponsored by Abdullahi Farouk (APC) by the majority of the lawmakers at the Committee of the Whole House chaired by Deputy Speaker Yussuff Lasun.

The House dismissed the fears of the two, stating that the establishment of the corps would not only engender national reorientation aimed at prioritising performance of civic duties but also to empower youths with gainful employment.

According to Farouk, if passed into law, the NPC has the potentials to empower, develop and provide alternative employment for youths, facilitate peace, volunteerism, community service and nation building.

While presenting the report, Chairman, House Committee on Interior Adams Jagaba said the bill generated unprecedented interest as 90 memoranda were received from stakeholders and members of the public.

According to him, the Bill got the support of majority of the stakeholders except the NPF and NSCDC.

“Stakeholders were unanimous in their support that the NPC, when established will complement the efforts of other security agencies and enhance youth empowerment,” he said.

The report was unanimously adopted when it was put to voice vote by Lasun.

The bill requires the concurrence of the Senate before it could be forwarded to the President for assent.
