  • Five people lay claim to N49m abandoned in sacks, says EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said five people are laying claim to the N49million its operatives intercepted in sacks at the airport in Kaduna.

It said the Federal High Court in Kaduna would soon give judgment on the puzzle over the cash.

The anti-graft agency said the cash had been deposited in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), pending a pronouncement by the court.

It made the clarifications in its monthly magazine, “EFCC Alert.”

The EFCC said: “Five individuals have so far come forth to lay claim to the N49 million intercepted at the Kaduna International Airport on March 13, 2017.

“They are: Oyebanji Plaits Steve, Taiye Omoniyi Oluwaleke, Risikat  Tiamiyu Titilayo, Fausat Oni and Joshua Kisabo.

“It will be recalled that following a tip off, EFCC operatives intercepted the money during a routine baggage screening, which was contained in five 150kg  coloured BUHU sacks – crispy naira notes of N200  denomination in 20 bundles, totalling N40 million and  N50 denomination in 180 bundles totalling N9 million.

“In solving the N49 million puzzle, the EFCC brought the  case before Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Kaduna. After presenting its sole witness, the EFCC through its counsel, Joshua Saidi, closed its case on May 17.

“A certified true copy of the teller used to deposit the money to the Central Bank of Nigeria, was also admitted as exhibit. Judgement in respect of the case is expected soon.”

According to investigation, the cash was discovered by EFCC Zonal Office in Kaduna in five large black 150kg colour BUHU sacks during routine baggage screening at the airport.

A top source in the commission said: “Upon careful scrutiny of the sacks, it was discovered that they contained fresh crispy Naira notes of N200 denomination in 200 bundles, totalling N40million and N50 denomination in 180 bundles totalling N9million.

“The bundles were sealed purportedly emanating from the Nigerian Security and Minting Company (MSPMC) as seen in the label on the packs.

“The five sacks were sighted unattended to and without tags containing fresh bulk items suspected to be money from the aroma perceived from the sacks.

“The owner of the money later showed up, but could not state the exact money in the sacks or present any document authenticating the genesis of the money.”

  • Jonathan under attack for ‘we did well’ claim

Jonathan under attack for ‘we did well’ claim

    Ex-President should apologise, says Oni

    Sagay: claim irresponsible

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has received knocks for praising his administration after  admitting that he “failed to completely plug the loopholes in the fight against corruption”.

Jonathan, who spoke in Abuja at the convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said his administration “did well”. He explained that he “learnt that some people said that if the PDP had remained in power beyond 2015, the economy would have been worse”. “This couldn’t have been the case, because we had a sound economic team in place,” the former president said.

Jonathan said his administration provided focused leadership through institutional and sectoral reforms which impacted positively on the fundamentals for growth to the extent that inflation was at single digit and the economy was rebased to become the largest in Africa.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Prosecutions, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, disagreed with former President Jonathan’s claim that his administration performed creditably.

Obono-Obla said the past administration was “scandalously corrupt” and that Jonathan had a false impression of his administration’s performance

Obono-Obla, who is also the chairman of the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, said the former president was speaking with both sides of the mouth.

He said: “Only a very honest man will say his mother’s soup pot is not good and Jonathan is not a very honest man, with due respect to him. If he were honest, how can he say that food prices stayed low? It is not true. It is not true that the Nigerian economy was very sound.

“He ran a voodoo economy, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. There was massive unemployment, massive inflation; there was shortage of petroleum products, there was oil subsidy which led to trillions of naira subsidy fraud.

“So, how can he say that the economy was sound, that it was well managed? The bumbling incompetence of his government is what has manifested in what we saw when we went into a recession shortly after we took over when we met an empty treasury.

“If he said his government didn’t block loopholes of corruption, that is an admission that his government was chronically scandalously corrupt and which is true, because we have not seen that kind of mindless looting of government resources and money which has manifested in his former minister looting what would amount to the budget of the entire northern states for about four years.

“He said the economy was sound when there were a lot of leakages through which billions of dollars were siphoned from the economy.”

Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Segun Oni, cautioned the former president against “talking about what he did or failed to do as far as corruption is concerned”.

He urged him to apologise to Nigerians having failed to fight corruption as there were no results to show for his efforts.

“It is very unfortunate that a former President will say that. There is the saying that there is no mark for effort. The only mark you get is for results.

“It does’t matter how much a man tried; if he does not have a result to show, what he should just do is to keep quiet and that is what I will advise him to do as far as corruption is concerned.

“The results are very shameful. I think he should just be asking for forgiveness.”

Voice of Nigeria Director-General Osita Okechukwu also said the ex-president should apologise to Nigerians for betraying their trust and expanding the loopholes of corruption which plunged the nation into its current state.

Okechukwu said: “My own sincere assessment is that our dear ex-president, rather than plug loopholes of corruption; opened it wide. He should apologise to Nigerians who he betrayed for being less than transparent. I was outraged when I heard him proclaim that PDP will return to power in 2019 because of the hunger and poverty ravaging the country”.

“The Nigerian economy could have collapsed if President Buhari didn’t come to the rescue. Jonathan relied on voodoo economic records which rated the Nigerian economy higher than that of industrialised South Africa. An economy with 40,000 MW to Nigeria’s less than 4,000MW. ”

He added: “Jonathan and his cohorts assume that many of us will easily forget how on 13 May, 2010, his regime announced publicly with joy the award of $23 billion contract for the erection of three Greenfield refineries; one to be erected in Bayelsa, one in Kogi and one in Lagos.

“Today, we see neither the refineries nor the billions of dollars at a time Nigeria’s Excess Account hovered around $17 billion. The refineries could have saved Nigeria over $200 billion expended on importation of refined petroleum products till date.

“Jonathan should just keep quiet, especially now that the hunger and poverty he imposed on us are getting too harsh.

.”He propelled his preferred Minister Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke and other cronies to loot dry our dear countrymen. Example, latter day revelations are showing how $80 million was used by Mrs Madueke’s ally to purchase a luxury yacht, money which could have been utilised to build the best hospital in Yenogoa. Or is he not reminding us of the humongous foreign exchange used in buying choice estates locally and abroad?

“In sum, the biggest headache of Buhari administration is the huge local and foreign debt amassed by the PDP’s 16 years misrule.

“On bailout fund and Paris Club refund, Buhari has spent over N1 trillion on salary and pension arrears. He has also paid over $7 billion on obligations to International Oil Companies (IOC) with the little he got.”

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Prof Itse Sagay said Jonathan never fought corruption but deepened it.

“We are investigating nearly $470 billion stolen and all the villas around the world his cronies bought. We are looking at over $2 billion and endless amount that disappeared under the former National Security Adviser (NSA). We are investigating former Chief of Army Staff he appointed, who diverted whopping amount of public funds. His shameless statement just shows the level of self-deceit by the former president. It is unbelievable.

“This country is very lucky that the current administration took over the government from the hands of the party of plunderers, which could have ruined us all.

“If Jonathan had remained in office, we would all, by now, be carrying Ghana-must-go bags to go look for employment in other countries.”

Sagay added: “Of course, the inflation might have been reduced when he was in the saddle when his cronies emptied the treasury and blowing money all over the place, spending public funds on luxurious and irresponsible things. There was a lot of money they were throwing about, which did not belong to them. If they didn’t empty the treasury, maybe the inflation rate would have been better now. But, they finished the whole money in the nation’s coffers. What the Buhari administration is doing is digging us out of the big hole the PDP put us to.

“That is why there is inflation. Jonathan and his political party are the cause of the economic problem we found ourselves today. All this joblessness, misery, kidnapping and the despicable crimes being committed are as a result of lack of funds for ordinary human activities.

“In fact, the PDP and its members are a curse to this country. For them to ever dream that they would come back to power, that is the wildest and irresponsible dream anyone can contemplate.”

National Chairman of United Progressives Party (UPP) Chief Chekwas Okorie said: “I want to be charitable to Jonathan for admitting that he scored himself a failure in the area of the fight against corruption and above average in area of economic development.

“I must say that Jonathan failed on both sides. A government that lasted that long was supposed to provide development for the country. The economy did not improve under his government; rather than improving, his administration laid the foundation for our going into recession. Corruption thrived under Jonathan to an unimaginable level.

“He gave tacit support to corruption and when he began to say stealing was not corruption, one could see that he was not against corruption.”

Afenifere Publicity Secretary Yinka Odumakin said: “It is true that Jonathan did not fight corruption headlong just like other administrations had not fought corruption sincerely in the country. There is no administration that has met the yearning of the people, when it comes to the fight against corruption.

“This is because the foundation of the fight against corruption has not been properly laid. The foundation was laid with corruption, so it is not possible to fight corruption in a badly laid foundation that is supposed to fight corruption.”

The National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Prof. Bankole Okuwa, described the ex-president “as a non-starter”, adding that it was most unfortunate that he became the president. “We don’t need someone like him and honestly his wife made him to fritter away over N2 billion; what an embarrassment. Jonathan and his wife should be in jail by now. If Buhari was  not lenient with him, he should be in jail.

Former Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Olrunnimbe Mamora said Jonathan’s statement was an admission of failure to act appropriately to curb corruption during his tenure.

Mamora said: “It is an admission of some measures of guilt in terms of approach in curbing corruption under his watch. He has admitted he didn’t do much as expected by the people. It is an admission of not doing much in line of expectation of the people.

“His admission that he failed to curb corruption under his watch is an indictment on his administration; and a stain that cannot be removed.”

Mamora noted corruption was one of the low points of Jonathan government; it is in the book of  history that his administration was the most corrupt; he has only confirmed that a lot of untoward happened under him.

Lawyer and public affairs analyst Monday Ubani was surprised that Jonathan had at last admitted that there was corruption during his tenure.

He said Jonathan knew all along when he was in power that there was high level corruption in the country but he refused to admit. The magnitude of corruption under him has cost us development in this country in terms of infrastructural development. “His intransigence has retarded our progress”, he stated.

The second National Vice President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) said Jonathan should seek forgiveness from Nigerians.

“Even if he was forgiven, I doubt if Nigerians would allow his party  (PDP) to return to power after looting the treasury,” he added.

Constitutional lawyer Wahab Shittu advised former President Jonathan to maintain a dignified silence.

He said: “The reality is that  corruption thrived to unprecedented height during his tenure.Corruption not only became the  elephant in the room, it was  elevated to  a fundamental Article of Faith with frightening consequences on the economy with  the people  worse hit in terms of living standards and negative image to our country.

“These days we are daily assaulted with unimaginable disclosures of  massive looting of our commonwealth with accusing fingers being pointed at senior officials of his administration many of who said they acted on the basis of authorisation of the former president.

“Until the former president clears himself of these allegations he has no moral right to raise his voice in public commentary on the affairs of our country.

“The former president handed over a postrate economy with the country plunged into economic recession for which it is yet to recover. From mind boggling allegations of massive looting of our commonwealth to alleged divesion of resources meant for arms procurement to private pockets including massive corruption in the electricity sector and other sectors of  the economy,  the country took a turn for the worse,  it was an era when the former president publicly pronounced that stealing did not amount to corruption.”

Dogo, Okpotu claim LBA for August

Kabiru Dogo of Nasarawa United and Anthony Okpotu of Lobi Stars have been named the Manager and Player for August in the Glo Premier League by the League Bloggers Awards (LBA).

In the month under review, Dogo and Okpotu clearly underscored their performance in the top flight with the former leading Nasarawa United to eye-catching displays and impressive outcomes while the latter’s goals were pivotal in their push out of the drop zone.

For the manager’s category, Dogo stood out among the other three nominees, Kadiri Ikhana (Enyimba), Gbenga Ogunbote (3SC) and Stanley Eguma (Dolphins).

Though the shortlisted managers for the August award was whittled down to Dogo and Ikhana based on similarities in points amassed by their teams being 13 apiece, the Nasarawa United trainer edged his Enyimba counterparts on two fronts.

Dogo ensured that his team held a superior goal difference than Ikhana’s Enyimba in August. Only Sunshine Stars, whose manager, Kennedy Boboye, was not in the running, had the best goal different in the month under review.

The Nasarawa United man also guided his team to claim the most points on the road, being four, including a 2-1 away win at Kano Pillars to bring to a halt a 12-year-old unbeaten home record held by the champions.

Okpotu was one of the nominees in the month of July for the LBA player’s gong but missed out to the impressive Abia Warriors attacking midfielder, Ndifreke Effiong.

But this time, the Lobi Stars striker, who has earned himself the moniker ‘The Panther,’ for exhibiting aggressiveness, pace, intelligence and strength which are qualities found in the evasive predator, racked up enough reasons to shake off the close challenge of Sunshine Stars and Super Eagles winger, Prince Aggreh as well as the duo of Aniekpeno Udoh of Akwa United and Stephen Adah of FC Taraba for the prize.

Aggreh and Okpotu scored six goals apiece in August and their goals also helped their teams to three wins each last month. But Okpotu shaded Aggreh to the LBA gong by netting two goals on the road at difficult venues against Enyimba and Kano Pillars while the Sunshine Stars man got all of his six in home matches.

Dogo and Okpotu will be presented their awards in a later date in September by the LBA.

Lobi claim first victory of the season

Lobi Stars picked up their first win of the Nigerian Premier League season with a slim 1-0 win over Heartland FC.

As early as the 10th minute two chances went begging for the home side with Akleche Enokela firing over the bar and Josiah Maduabuchi weak header was easily gathered.

Heartland got the first shot on target with Fred Okwara bringing out a smart save from returning Lobi Stars first choice goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai, who punched clear for a corner.

The Makurdi-based side, who were searching for their first win of the season, got the lucky break in the 19th minute when new signing Abdulrahman Bashir gave them the lead.

Bashir missed out on a chance to score a brace as the former ABS and Enyimba forward missed a glorious chance shooting wide with the net at his mercy five minutes to the half time break.

Bright Ejike came close to drawing Heartland level in the second half just as Josiah Madaubuchi also wasted a clear chance to increase his side lead.

The joy of picking up their first win made the crowd at the Aper Aku stadium wild at the blast of the final whistle.

Wikki claim magic wand on Abia Warriors

Wikki Tourists captain and centre back, Mustapha Ibrahim has said his side have the magic wand to unsettle hosts, Abia Warriors.

The Bauchi-based side will be the guests of Abia Warriors in Sunday’s Glo Premier League match day 4 encounter at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Ibrahim said his side are confident to earn their first away points of the ongoing season at Abia Warriors.

“We’ve already set a target of three maximum points or worst case scenario draw for the clash at Abia Warriors. We’re determined to end the away point drought so far in the season in the grudge game on Sunday at Warriors.

“We watched Abia Warriors’ match day 3 clash loss at El Kanemi Warriors in Kano aimed at preparing ourselves for the Sunday’s clash. Right now we understand their pattern and style of play as well as the key and potent players in their midst. “Our pattern of play is still  dark to them and we hope to cash in on the secrecy to unleash the killer punch on them. I can say confidently that we’ve the magic wand to undo them when both sides clash on Sunday for the three points at stake.

“We understand that the Umuahia Township Stadium is a fortress or slaughter slab of a sort but we hope to turn it against them. We’ve vowed not to lose to them but earn our first away points of the season in the encounter,” said Ibrahim to supersport.com.

Wikki Tourists have pocketed four points from possible nine in the three-week old Nigerian topflight.

  • Ekiti denies APC’s abuse claim

    Ekiti denies APC’s abuse claim

The Ekiti State government has denied involvement in human rights abuses as alleged by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a petition to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Describing the allegation of human rights violation as “spurious and unfounded”, the Ayo Fayose-led administration accused the APC of “misrepresentation of facts and engineering a smear campaign to achieve political gains”.

The government, in a protest letter to the NHRC by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, said it was the out gone APC-led government that carried out human rights violations during its four-year stint.

The protest letter was sequel to a petition forwarded to the NHRC by the state chapter of the APC, which accused Fayose of giving official cover to suspected political thugs allegedly wreaking havoc in many parts of the state in the run-up to the general elections.

The thugs, according to the APC, attacked its members, destroyed their property and vandalised posters, billboards and campaign vehicles, among other allegations.

The APC also followed up the petition by sending its representatives to the NHRC who were granted audience by the agency’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Bem Angwe, who promised to investigate the complaints.

Ajayi accused his predecessor, Olawale Fapohunda, of using his position as a commissioner on the NHRC board to orchestrate a campaign of calumny against the Fayose-led government.

The commissioner argued that contrary to the APC’s claims, infraction of rights allegedly occurred during the tenure of former Governor Kayode Fayemi.

  • Rangers claim away win at Crown

Rangers claim away win at Crown

A goal each from Matthew Etim, Chinedu Udeagha and Samuel Agba lifted Enugu Rangers to a 3-0 victory and increased Crown’s relegation fears at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

Etim opened the scoring from a well planned set-piece. Udeagha made it 2-0 moments later with a sublime finish following a defence-splitting pass to him.

Agba completed the scoring in the dying moments of the first half and added to manager Hakeem Busari’s problems.

Coach Busari knows his side must improve quickly if they are to stay up, particularly as his team have not won since he took over as the head coach.

Crown were a shadow of the side that gained promotion from the Nigeria National League. But that was as bad as it got for Busari’s lacklustre side. Etim was at alert to react to a fantastic set piece to silence the Ibadan fans.

Yet, if the Etim’s opener was scruffy, Udeagha’s goal was manufactured from the blues.

A delightful pass split the home defence and allowed Udeagha, a player with huge talents shoot from a very tight angle and Crown were two goals down in the televised match.

Rangers weren’t done yet and they got the third from a brilliant team move. Agba scored his 10th goal of the season in the 45th minute. Having struggled at the beginning of the season, Rangers will be confident they can build on the momentum of this win to secure at least a continental ticket.

  • Edo, Udoh claim LBA March gongs

Edo, Udoh claim LBA March gongs

Akwa United defender, Nnamso Edo and his coach, Patrick Udoh, have been named the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) Player and Manager respectively for the month of March.

They were outstanding in the month under review in the Glo Premier League and ensured The Promise Keepers, as Akwa United are also known, finished top of the standings at the end of March.

Captain of Akwa United, Edo, claimed the LBA Player for March on the strength of appearing in all four matches for his club last month and scoring three goals including a stunning free kick at Nasarawa United that secured a point for his team.

Edo also accounted for 2.33 goals of the seven scored by Akwa United in March. His defensive qualities were also never in doubt, as he led from the back as well and made sure they shipped in just twice in five matches.

Further goals from Edo also helped his team get wins over Gombe United and Kaduna United in home games, as he staved off the challenge of Sunshine Stars goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Ifeanyi Inyam of Sharks, Ifeanyi Egwim of Dolphins and Cletus Itodo of Abia Warriors.

Udoh bagged the LBA Manager for March for guiding Akwa United to an unbeaten finish in five league games last month and ensured they ended the month under review on eight points, one more than Sharks.

Udoh picked up the manager’s award for March ahead of Gbenga Ogunbote of Sharks, Ladan Bosso of Abia Warriors, Ndubuisi Nduka of FC Taraba and Richard Bubagha of Bayelsa United.

Edo and Udoh will be presented with their awards for March by the LBA later this month.

  • How long will it take me to get my claim?

Say it’s March 1 and you have a fender-bender in your car. Just how long do you have to wait to get your insurance check for the damages? Generally you should be riding pretty by April 1. At least that’s the goal of most auto insurers — to have your claim paid out on or before the 30-day mark. Of course, there’s no certainty your vehicle will be repaired by then.

But auto insurance rules are made to be broken. The time limit to pay your claim varies by state, according to each state’s “claims settlement provisions.”

When there’s a dispute or larger claim like a total loss, insurers need to assess the damage, which can stretch out the process. A typical fender-bender should be handled and closed fairly quickly.

Most auto insurance companies have direct repair programs and can refer you to one of their shops. The shop assesses the damage and communicates with the insurer for you.

    Time is money

When an insurance company snags a new customer, there are costs associated with “acquiring” the new client. There’s advertising, paying the insurance agent their commission, and the cost to produce the policy for the first time. It can take as many as seven years before an insurer can break even on a particular policy, and that’s assuming the customer doesn’t have a claim, explains Passmore.

If they have a claim the insurer will have to keep them even longer — ideally claim-free — to make back its money. So insurers are always better off providing good service and fair settlements in order to retain customers, who on average submit a claim only once every 10 years, according to Passmore.

And if you don’t like the customer service, “There’s a lot of competitions out there that will be happy to take that customer off your hands,” says Passmore. Insurers don’t have much incentive to delay; they want to get claims paid as fairly and quickly as they can.

    Staking your claim

Claims against someone else’s policy are a different ballgame.

“Any time you are going through a carrier that you’re not insured with the other party’s insurer, that process has the potential to be slowed down a bit just while the investigation is continuing,” says Dan Young, senior vice president of CARSTAR, North America’s largest multi-shop network of independently owned and operated collision repair facilities.

When the car is drivable, most people go to their carrier’s drive-in location, where they get an estimate and a claims check on the spot. Or they can use a direct repair facility, a one-stop option. They’ll drive directly to a specified shop affiliated with the insurer, pick up their rental, get a written estimate and have repairs begin.

Your own inability to cover your deductible could delay your repairs. Young observes that 20 years ago he never saw a $500 or $1000 deductible. That’s changed.

“In order to try and make insurance less expensive, many people have these very high deductibles and so they can’t afford their portion of the repair,” says Young. That’s why you see so many cars with dents and damaged fenders.

  • Residents claim police shot guard

A security guard was allegedly shot dead and a bank worker injured by policemen who mistook them for robbers.

The incident occurred early Saturday in Ikota, Lekki, Lagos. The police were responding to a distress call by a resident that robbers were operating in the neighbourhood.

The guard was simply identified as Nuhu, while the banker’s name was given as Femi Adewunmi Badejo.

The robbers, numbering about 20, were said to have scaled the fence of the building to gain access.

The Nation gathered that they dispossessed their victims of cash and valuables without shooting. The police reportedly came after the robbers had left and shoot Badejo and Nuhu.

The guard, who was allegedly shot on his chest and pelvic region, died in an undisclosed hospital; Badejo is recuperating at a highbrow hospital on Lagos Island.

There are conflicting reports on how the men were shot. The tenants claimed the police shot the dead and rushed them to the hospital; the police alleged the guard was found dead on their arrival with bullet wounds on his chest and back.

Our source, said the tenants were outside discussing their ordeal when the police in their patrol van arrived and shot Badejo thrice.

He said: “Badejo was telling the policemen that he is not an armed robber, and that he was robbed, the police refused to listen and shot him thrice.

“Nuhu, who was standing beside Badejo, was equally shot by the police on his back and chest. The main security man, Joseph, who saw what was happening, scaled the fence and ran into the bush.

“Eventually, other neighbours came out and also told the policemen that the two people they had shot were members of the compound. That was when they carried them in their ambulance and rushed them to St. Nicholas Hospital.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said Badejo is recuperating at the hospital.

Nuhu was found dead by the police at the premises, adding that his killers are not known.

“The police got a distress call that armed robbers were operating in the area opposite Mega Chicken; some officers were deployed, including the Divisional of Police Officer (DPO) to cordon off the area.

“We were in contact with the person who made the call and even at the point of entry into the compound, the caller insisted that the armed robbers were still within the vicinity. As the police approached, a man was seen hiding under a car, and he was mistaken for a criminal and shot on the leg.

“When he screamed that he wasn’t an armed robber, and was only hiding, the police went to rescue him and he was taken to the hospital. For the guard, his remains were found on the floor in the compound and it was not clear who must have killed him.

“It appeared it was a false alarm because no armed robbers were sighted at the vicinity at the time the police arrived. The remains of the guard have been deposited in the mortuary.”
