    •Police summon seven

The police in Ondo town, Ondo State, have invited seven members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and their counterparts from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following a clash between the two unions.

Two members, including the RTEAN Chairman, Okada branch, Lipakala unit,  Amadu Jamiu, were injured, in the clash which was said to have occurred at Lipakala junction.

Jamiu, who spoke with reporters at the emergency ward of the State Specialist hospital, alleged that the attackers, suspected NURTW members, were led by Abdulahi Olawale.

The victim alleged that the attackers stormed the loading park in the area to unleash mayhem on them.

He traced the source of the conflict to  the decision to move from NURTW to RTEAN.

“We were members of the NURTW, but we decided to move to RTEAN. We wrote a later to them and accompanied it with an affidavit to support our claims. Since then, they have been threatening us.”

The RTEAN Chairman in Ondo town, Sebeeni Obadun, described the attack as unfortunate. A NURTW chieftain, Henry Ajetomobi, described all allegations levelled against his members as untrue

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Olu-Ojo Ogunmoyole, confirmed the report. He said members of the two unions were invited for questioning.

EMIRATES CLASH: Bruce to assess Aluko for fitness

Super Eagles ace Sam Aluko will be properly assessed for fitness ahead of Hull City’s away clash against Arsenal.  Hull City coach

Steve Bruce, who gave  the hint, said players returning to international duties will not be thrown into the Emirates clash unless the medical team confirms they are fit enough to play for 90 minutes.

Sone Aluko and teammate Mohamed Diame endured long flights to link up with Senegal and Nigeria respectively and Bruce hinted that the players would be left out if they show signs of fatigue as a result of jet lag and hard fought victory against their opponents in the AFCON qualifiers.

“We’ll have to look at Diame and Aluko because they only played on Wednesday night.

“No matter who you are, if you’re hanging around airports, going on long-haul flights, playing games – you’re going to be fatigued.

“It isn’t fair on the players. We’ve got four or five who have been flying through the time zones, so we’ll have a look at them and see how bright they are,” he said

While Aluko had a good ride as the Super Eagles achieved a 3-1 victory over Sudan, same cannot be said of teammate Mohamed Diame as the Teranga Lions were beaten 1-0 by Tunisia.  Aluko came in as a second half substitute in Nigeria’s tie against Sudan on Wednesday at the Abuja National Stadium.  The 3-1 victory did not, however, stop the Glass House from showing Keshi the exit door.

Bruce would be hoping to earn a point at the Emirates coming after his side’s 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace.   The victory against Palace remains the side’s only victory in five premiership matches including a 4-2 defeat at home by Manchester United

  • Two die in Ogun cults clash

Two die in Ogun cults clash

Two persons suspected to be secret cults’ members have been killed and others injured in  a pre-dawn attack and counter-attack between rival groups in Ijebu-Igbo, the headquarters of Ijebu North Local Government Council Area, Ogun State.

A gun battle between two warring cult groups –  Eye Confraternity (the Air Lords) and the Aiye Confraternity (the Black Axe) was said to have begun around 3:56a.m at the Aleke Oke-Sopin area of the town.

Residents were thrown into panic as they were woke up by the sounds of sporadic gunshots.

The dead were identified as 28 year-old Abiodun Adeniye and Taiwo Yusuf (24).

Their remains have been deposited at a morgue in  the town, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The  Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who  confirmed the incident, told reporters that cutlasses, pairs of scissors,  guns, expended bullets, live cartridges, cults’ paraphernalia and charms were recovered from the groups.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), added that the clash informed why the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, directed all anti-crime teams in the state  to relocate momentarily to Ijebu for adequate protection of lives and property, particularly during the Ojude Oba festival.

Adejobi said the police would not relent in its efforts in tackling activities of cultists  in any part of the state “via robust intelligence and sophisticated policing.”

He appealed to  Ogun residents to collaborate with the police and other security agencies to succeed in the war against cultism and security of lives and property.

  • Assembly wades into herdsmen, farmers clash

The Enugu State House of Assembly has initiated moves to end frequent violent clashes between herdsmen and farmers.

The bill, entitled “A law to make provisions for the control of nomadic cattle rearing in Enugu State and other matters related thereto” is being sponsored by Hon. Chinedu Nwamba, representing Nsukka East Constituency.

The lawmaker, in an interview with reporters, said the bill, when passed into law, would promote symbiotic relationship between the farmers and the herdsmen.

Nwamba, who lamented several lives and properties that have been lost in different parts of the country owing to the clashes, urged other states to replicate the law.

“The main reason for this bill is to ensure adequate peace between the two parties- farmers and herdsmen. Nobody in this country is ignorant of some violent clashes which have occurred as a result of disagreement between the farmers and the herdsmen.

“We have cases where the herdsmen will allow their cattle to graze on farmlands, and when the farmers kill the cows in retaliation, the herdsmen will challenge the farmers.

“So, it is my belief that when this bill is passed into law, it will end conflict and promote peace between these parties that need the services of each other.”

The bill provides for the establishment of grazing areas in each of the three senatorial zones of Enugu State and the nomadic cattle rearers shall ensure that the cattle are confined within the grazing areas as provided.

It further provided that “any person who permits cattle to graze in an area not designated as grazing area, shall be guilty of an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to six months imprisonment or a fine of N100,000 or both.

“As from the commencement of this law, the commissioner shall appoint pound masters in all the local government areas whose functions shall include the impounding of cattle found grazing in non-designated grazing areas.

“Cattle found grazing in an area not designated a grazing area shall be impounded by the pound master or any other person duly authorized by the commissioner.

“Any cattle impounded under this law, which is not claimed within one week of the impounding, shall be sold in accordance with auction law; the proceeds of the sale shall be deposited in government coffers.”

The bill, which was mentioned at the House Plenary Session, is expected to be debated later.

    • Dolphins tackle Prime FC in Abuja

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) has moved next Thursday’s Federation Cup semi final clash between holders Enyimba FC and fellow Professional Football League side, Giwa FC to the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

Although there was a desire to ensure both semi final matches are played at the same venue for reason of close monitoring and the probability of Supersport television broadcasting both games live, officials have  decided to move one of the matches to ensure equidistance for both competing sides.

Ruth David, Head of Federation Cup unit, stated: “We have now moved the match between Enyimba FC and Giwa FC to Abeokuta. Abuja, the venue picked earlier, is much closer to Jos, home of Giwa FC than it is to Aba, the base of Enyimba FC.”

However, four –time champions Dolphins FC and Prime FC will still square off at the FIFA Goal Project, Abuja, also on Thursday. Both matches kick off at 4pm.

There was also a change in the women’s event, with the match between Sunshine Queens and Nasarawa Amazons now to take place in Lokoja, on Friday. Rivers Angels and Delta Queens retain their FIFA Goal Project, Abuja venue for the same day.

  • Protesters clash over money

Members of a protesting group for the release of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, ReleaseOurGirls, fought yesterday in Abuja over the sharing  money. They were paid daily.

The protesters, comprising young men, were exchanging fisticuffs.

They were heard screaming: “You are lying, we must share the money! You must give me my share; you must give me my money! We must share it equally!”

This happened after the group marked 100 days of the abduction of the over 200 pupils from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.

The quarrelling protesters ignored the passersby as they tore one another’s clothes. Two of them were nearly hit by a car.

The policemen stationed in front of the Millennium Park dispersed the protesters.

One of the leaders of the ReleaseOurGirls had confessed that they were paid to hold the rally.

The group, last month, attacked the Oby Ezekwesili-led BringBackOurGirls movement. They beat up its members, seizing their phones and breaking their chairs.
