    Recycling styrofoam for cleaner environment

Driven by the desire to see a cleaner and waste-free environment, Uzoma Anyanwu, a fabric artist and up-cycler will hold his solo exhibition: Artistry Alchemy, on January 18 at National Museum, Onikan Lagos. Organised in partnership with Nike Art Gallery, Nigeria/USA, the maiden solo museum exhibition is a result of years of  recycling styrofoam and experimenting the best way to re-use the waste materials on the streets. Prof Frank Ugiomoh of  University of Port Harcourt is artistic director of the exhibition.

In particular, the results of his experiments with styrofoam constitute the bulk of works for this eco-making exhibition. The show, which will feature 10 sculptures and two collage quilts will run till January 29.

Uzoma, known for creating gorgeous fabric collage and Quilt portraits from discarded fabrics, he pioneered use of recycled fabrics to make beautiful portraits and influence younger artists.

But in the new series, Uzoma extends his research and experiments to fabric sculptures. He also began fabric sculptures, exploring styrofoam and fabrics.

Uzoma recycles dumped styrofoam off the streets of Lagos, gutters and dump sites in Ogun where he resides and work. Uzoma was inspired to approach re-use of styrofoam because of its already sculptural nature and the dangers it poses when it fills up city drainages. For over five years Uzoma has been recycling styrofoam and experimenting the best way an artist can re-use this brittle nature material.
