    Unemployed woman absconds with church property

    A 45-year-old unemployed woman, Olabisi Usman, who allegedly stole church property valued at N154,000, was on Friday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused was arraigned before a Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O Ekogbulu, on a charge of stealing.

    Usman, who resides at Meiran area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Ekogbulu said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, said that the accused committed the offence on November 26, at Olagoke Street, Meiran, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully entered into Foursquare Gospel Church and stole some property.

    “The accused stole one musical speaker, one tiger generator, a standing fan, a ceiling fan and four plastic chairs. Total value of items stolen was N154,000,” he said.

    Okuoimose said that the accused was a tenant in the church premises and entered through the window to steal.

    “The accused, who just packed into the compound two months earlier, was later found out to be behind the theft.

    “When she was arrested and questioned, she confessed that she stole the items and sold it to one Malam.

    “But the buyer could not be located,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 308 (2)of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The accused may be jailed for three years if found guilty of stealing according to the provisions of Section 287.

    The case was adjourned until January 17 for mention.

    Businessman arraigned over aluminium window theft

    A businessman, 33-year-old Tajudeen Williams, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, charged with stealing a N39, 900 aluminium window.

    A resident of Obawole area of Agege, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Clement Okuoimose told the court that Williams committed the offence on June 12 at Londoner Avenue, Iju-Ishaga, Lagos.

    According to him, the accused stole an aluminium window valued at N39, 900, property of the complainant, Mr Emeka Nwaukpolo.

    “The accused unlawful entered the complainant’s uncompleted building and stole an aluminium window which has been fixed.”

    Okuoimose said  the accused was caught by community leaders in the area.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section provides a three-year jail term for offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    She said the surety should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until July 5 for mention.

    Man docked for stealing wine at Shoprite

    A 26-year-old man, Tajudeen Balogun was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing two bottles of wine valued at N65, 200.

    Balogun, a residing in Ikorodu, near Lagos, allegedly stole the wine at the Shoprite in the Ikeja Shopping Mall at Alausa.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, said the accused committed the offence on May 28.

    “The accused came into the mall under the pretext of buying some goods and stole two bottles of Laurent wine and hid them inside his shirt.

    “When he got to the entrance, the security men stopped him for checking and they discovered the items under his shirt.

    “He was handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three-year jail term for stealing.

    Balogun, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, adjourned the case until June 28 for mention.

  • Man in court for requesting friend’s ATM pin code from bank

    A 34-year-old man, Samson Oyedoyin, who allegedly went to a bank to ask for his friend’s internet banking pin code was on Monday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 24 at Access Bank, Ogba, Lagos.

    He said that Oyedoyin attempted to commit felony by requesting for the internet banking pin code of a bank account belonging to Mr Semiu Adegoke.

    “The accused went to the bank, requesting for the pin code of his friend who is a customer to the bank without his consent,” he said.

    Okuoimose further said a member of staff of the bank then called the owner of the account, Adegoke, who denied giving the accused instruction to access his bank account.

    “When the account holder was called, he said that the accused was his friend but denied sending him to the bank.

    “The accused was arrested and handed over to the police.”

    The offence contravened Section 404 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Section 404 prescribes seven years imprisonment as penalty for intent to commit felony.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offence and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs M. I Dan-Oru, adjourned the case until May 25 for mention.

  • Applicant in court over illegal possession of cannabis

    A 22-year-old applicant, Shilo Mohammed, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly being in possession of a bag containing cannabis sativa (a.k.a. Indian hemp).

    The defendant is facing a count charge of unlawful possession of cannabis sativa.

    Mohammed of no fixed address, however, denied committing the offence, while Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oru admitted him to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until May 25 for mention.
    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on April 24 at Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos.

    He said that the accused was caught by policemen on patrol in an uncompleted building.

    “The accused sighted the police on patrol, he took to his heels, the police suspected something and they chased him and he was apprehended.

    “When his bag was searched, weeds suspected to be hemp were found,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused risked six months imprisonment if found guilty of being in possession of the weed, according to the provisions of Section 330.

     

  • Man docked for impersonation, forgery

    For allegedly impersonating an Air Force officer, a 35-year-old security man, AbduIlahi Muhammed,  on Wednesday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    “The defendant alighted from the bike and brought out a jack knife with the aim of stabbing Balogun.

    “He was arrested and a signal was sent to Nigeria Air Force Base in Ikeja with his Identity card for sanctioning.

    “It was discovered that the name of the defendant could not be found as a member of the Nigeria Air Force and that his ID card was fake.

    “When he was questioned by the police, he confessed to have bought the camouflage at Kantagora Market, Abule-Egba, Lagos,” the prosecutor said.
    According to him, the offences contravene sections 51, 77, 361(1)(b), 363(2b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 363(2b) prescribes 14 years jail term for forgery, while section 77 prescribes three years imprisonment for impersonating as member of armed forces or police.

    The defendant pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbule, adjourned the case till April 19 for mention.
