  • Cleric to couple: ‘Imbibe spirit of tolerance’

A pastor of the Assemblies of God Church in Calabar, Pastor Festus Edet, has advised  couples to imbibe the spirit of tolerance for and trust each other, as this is the basis of a good family life.

Edet, a senior pastor of the Green Land, Ikot Omin Sectional Headquarters of the church, gave the advice during the marriage celebration of the Commander of Cross River State Anti-Crime and Kidnapping Squad, DSP Efoli Essien, and his wife, Mrs Womi.

He advised the couple to approach issues in a Godly way in order to build a mutual understanding and always try to speak with one voice as partners.

“As you have made your vows before God, you should be ready to make everything possible to make each other happy and be ready to make sacrifices for the progress of the marriage,” Edet said.

Essien said the marriage blessing was a way of appreciating the protection and grace of God towards his family.

“As we celebrate our marriage blessing today, I ask God for more blessings, protection and grace as I progress in life with my family.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank God, members of my family and friends who have always supported me in different ways.

“I want to assure my wife and children that I will continue to be a good husband and father to them because they are part of my existence on earth’’, he said.

The Commander thanked everyone who attended the occasion, saying that his marriage blessing was a dream come true.

He said that the 19 year-old union with his wife had been fruitful with six children.

  • Cleric flays Fashola on state of Nigerian roads

Cleric flays Fashola on state of Nigerian roads

A Lagos cleric, Prophet Lai Bamidele, has described as insensitive, a statement credited to the Power, Works and Housing Minister, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, that Nigerian roads are not bad. Bamidele, who is General Overseer of Glorious End-Time Evangelical Ministries, a church in Fagba, Lagos, said the statement, more than anything else, was an admission of failure on the part of the minister. He was speaking during a sermon to mark a week-long prayer for Nigeria.

“While I do not understand why Fashola, who used to be loved by Lagosians would have to drift suddenly, I will still tell him that his statement is totally wrong. Even starting from places he knows very much, the Sango-Ota roads and the Ikorodu-Odongunyan-Shagamu roads in the Lagos axis, which are federal roads, are nothing to write home about.

“Since he said Nigerian roads are now good under him, let him point to the major road constructions since their administration came into power. And all I can deduce from the minister’s unfriendly statement is that his attitude is symptomatic of the spirit of pride that has come upon many government officials under this administration,” he deplored.

Bamidele, however, commended the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, over his various laudable projects for the two years of his administration, saying, “I can say with boldness and full conviction that what Ambode has achieved in only two years were far, far more than what Fashola achieved in his entire eight years as governor.” He urged the governor not to relent in his efforts at improving the lot of the masses, especially through the various empowerment programmes he had embarked upon.

  • Prepare men for heaven, cleric charges church leaders

Associate Pastor of The Christian Brethren Church Lagos, Pastor Afolabi Oladele, has called on church leaders to focus more on teachings that will prepare men for heaven.

He spoke at the ministers’ conference of the church tagged: Let’s blow the trumpet from Tishri to Tabernacles.

Oladele pointed out that the coming of Christ is at hand, urging church leaders to prepare as many as possible for the day.

“Today, the world is faced with incessant cases of war, prostitution, same marriage, kidnapping, incest, wickedness and wanton disobedience to parent by children; they are all indications that the end is near and eternity is so close that we can imagine,” he stated.

Oladele argued the world is beginning to see trickles of God’s judgment in tsunami, destruction of coastal cities, oil spillage and growing insecurity, urging believers to always remember they will never live forever on earth.

He appealed to churches to constantly warn sinners of the impeding judgment as well as the needs for repentance through the Lord Jesus.

Oladele decried the increasing wave of prosperity preachers deceiving undiscerning members, adding that they will be disappointed after the rapture.

“Many false teachers are in the world. They teach eternal security and set their members on a fast lane to hell while they amass wealth, fame, power and accolades from their members,” he said

He challenged the body of Christ to redouble commitment to rural evangelism as there are lots of unreached and untouched communities begging for attention.

  • Impact of recession will soon be over, cleric assures

Nigerians will soon stop feeling the impact of recession, Senior Pastor of Praise Arena, Jummy Adetoyese-Olagunju, has stated.

He asked them to be optimistic and sustain prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the recent data by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics on the nation’s exit from recession is an indication of answered prayer.

Speaking with our correspondent in his office, Adetoyese-Olagunju noted recent developments have clearly shown God was bent on fixing the recession fever.

According to him: “OPEC took considerations of our peculiar situation. Nigeria and Libya were given unrestricted production, which is indeed an uncommon favour.

“That implies that our dollar will become stronger, the economic that was just thriving to survive will now have a better leverage.”

The cleric, a energy expert, said if the nation succeeds in attracting new investors to the oil sector, things would take a turn for the best.

He pointed out the agriculture, tourism, mining, transportation, manufacturing and arts sector offer the nation’s best opportunities to increase Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

He supported calls for diversification of the economic while pleading oil-producing communities should be included in development plans.

  • Tips on healthy living, by cleric

How can Nigerians improve on their health? It is by doing regular exercises, appropriate choice of good stable food, routine medical screenings and having a meaningful relationship with God, the Convener/Founder, ‘Arise Women Conference’ (‘Arise’, for short), Pastor Siju Iluyomade, has said.

She spoke at the Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos before her group embarked on a walk round major streets of Victoria Island to create awareness on healthy living.

Thereafter the NGO carried out a free medical screening and disease prevention talk.

The walk was accompanied by dancing, music, exercises, eating of  fruits, drinks, medical talks, and lots of fun. There were many stands and mobile clinics that catered for participants’ medical, spiritual and welfare needs.

Mrs Iluyomade, the wife of the Regional Pastor of Region 20, City of David (COD) of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), explained the reason for the event tagged:  ‘Walkforlife’.

She said regular exercises keep lifestyle diseases at bay. “If people can add some regular movement into their routines throughout the day, they will feel better and be less susceptible to health problems. In the long term, they may not see big changes in the mirror, but they will prevent further weight gain. So it is being suggested that people take the stairs instead of the elevator, walk to a colleague’s office rather than phoning them and taking short strolls during the day to help increase the number of steps they take”.

Shedding light on the various booths, she said: “Arise is committed to the building of our great nation, Nigeria, through its women by equipping them spiritually, morally, ethically, to the physical health of women by the provision of free medical screening services in several areas, including diabetes and cancer. It is committed to the establishment of mobile clinics which has been bringing primary health care to the doorsteps of different communities and a Free Women’s Clinic at Healing Stripes Hospital, Victoria Island as an out-patient clinic for women. Arise is a faith-based non-governmental organisation committed to accelerating nation building through the empowerment of women in the society and also passionate about the health of women through free preventive medical care in the area of HIV tests, eye test, Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar level tests.”

Mrs Iluyomade then called on the government to improve on delivering healthcare systems, initiatives and well drilled practitioners to ensure a more productive society.

She said in order for Nigerians to achieve their potentials on a day- to-day basis, the government has to improve on delivering more sound healthcare systems, enlightenments and practitioners in almost every local government.

“A lot of our people die needlessly just simply because they are not looked after on a day-to-day basis. So it is important that we imbibe the spirit of wellness and learn to take care of ourselves through exercise and good eating habits and I am sure by doing this, we will have a more productive society. I believe very strongly in health and I believe that we need to take care of ourselves in order for us to achieve our potential and what I will like to see in the near future is that we have general practitioners (GPs) in almost every local government for every 10 minutes walk from every home, so that it becomes a part of us”, she said.

“We operate here in Lagos and main focus of the health areas we cover have been expanded to prostate and cervical cancer screening, and sickle cell anaemia. I need to point out that hypertension is prevalent in virtually almost all the people who have trooped out here, this is because in Lagos, people hardly exercise and most indulge in bad habits such as drinking alcoholic beverages, drugs and self medication. All these impair and must be stopped,” said Mrs Iluyomade.

Corroborating, Head, Clinical services, Healing Stripes Hospital, Foundation of the RCCG, Dr Akinsiku Adedamola, said he was not surprised by the life expectancy rate in Nigeria, adding that  government needs to curb the illicit sales of herbal concoctions and kick start health re-enlightenment programmes.

“Today the ailment we picked up the most is hypertension. Unfortunately, hypertension is a silent killer, a lot of people don’t know. Presently the life expectancy in Nigeria is very low compared to Western Worlds and this is because of the things we indulge in, there is therefore a need for government to curb the illicit sales of herbal concoctions.

”Our fast foods points also need re-education to reduce the amount of spices or seasonings added to foods. The government also needs to come up with programmes that will keep re-enlightening people on the truth about health”, he said.

According to Akinsiku, “Advocacy is integral and just as we have come up with this initiative to promote healthy living, governments need to partner with religious ministries to create awareness as people are suffering due to poor health seeking behaviour”.

  • Cleric seeks probe of ‘thuggery, child labour’

A blind cleric and General Overseer of the Hour of Mercy Prayer Ministry Worldwide (Orioke Alaseyori), Prophet Muyideen Moses Kasali, has urged the police to probe cases of alleged child labour and slavery levelled against a top chief in Ilora community of Oyo State.

Kasali, who prevented some youths from burning down some homes and churches during a crusade he organised, told reporters that the police should also tighten security in the town to stop those he called power brokers from using youths to breach the peace in a dispute between the Akibio of Ilora in Afijio Local Government Area and a businessman, Mr Afolabi Steven (aka Afos).

Some angry youths, comprising “Area Boys”, reportedly planned to torch some churches, homes and business premises belonging to Afos over a dispute between him and the monarch.

It was learnt that Afos had been having a running battle with the monarch.

Kasali said: “I had a powerful crusade at Ilora town, as the Lord led me. God displayed his awesome powers during the crusade, which was a vigil and lasted for hours till the morning. Many people received miraculous healings, deliverance and salvation.

“I have organised so many crusades, as directed by God, where I anointed even some kings in Ilora neighbouring towns just for peace, progress of the area. So, I am concerned that some people were plotting to truncate these works.”

  • Cleric urges Nigerians to help govt, serve others

The Canon Residentiary of Arch Bishop Vinning Memorial Church Cathedral in the Diocese of Lagos West, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Ven Festus Olowosile, yesterday urged Nigerians to help government by rendering voluntary services to their communities.

The cleric also advised them to serve others.

Olowosile spoke during the 45th annual choir festival on a topic, titled: Serving God Through Others.

He said: “It is not everything you have to wait for government to do. Help government by contributing your own quota to the community. Those of you who inflate budgets and embezzle money allocated to carry out projects, God will deliver you.”

According to him, humans are created to serve God and the best way to show service to God is to serve others by giving and making individuals available to serve others.

Olowosile said: “One’s life is not contained in the abundance of the things he has. What you have cannot give you eternal life or good health; only God can. All the wealth you get cannot follow you to the grave.”

The cleric urged the gathering not to be covetous.

He noted that such a habit is a disease, a sickness that has killed many people because they wanted to continue getting and not giving to others.

Olowosile said: “To serve God by serving others, you must serve your family. Be responsible to your wives, husband, children, parents, friends and colleagues at work.

“Serve God by giving your tithes and offering. This is because it is the way to get more blessings. If you do not, you are an armed robber.

“Visit the sick, pray with them and give them gifts. Share your talents and gifts with others.”

According to him, from service, blessings are attached.

He said: “When you serve, you will discover your spiritual gifts. You should use them to serve in the church and give glory to God. When you serve God, you will experience miracles, become more like Jesus and your faith will increase. You will be made an encouragement to other believers to also serve God.”

Olowosile urged Nigerians to have a servant’s, a loving and a spirit-filled heart to serve God.

He said: “You must love God and humanity to serve God. You need anointing and grace for service.  People will oppose, discourage you and there would be conspiracy when you are serving. But you must be ready to bear the risks.

“If you do not serve, you will not grow spirituality and you will soon expire.

“Heaven is home. Whatever you do on earth will be rewarded – be it good or bad. God is asking us to be faithful in service and by so doing we will get good rewards.”

  • Cleric: dissolve my marriage, my wife curses me with her private part

Cleric: dissolve my marriage, my wife curses me with her private part

A pastor, Bernard Towoju, who said he cannot tolerate his wife’s ill-nature and trouble, has approached an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, seeking dissolution of their 25 years marriage.

He said his wife, Abosede, was fond of stripping naked to curse him with her private part.

“I cannot continue to make love to a woman who always curses me with her private part,” Towoju said.

He said Abosede is stubborn, wayward and troublesome.

“She once came to my office to fight me. She tore my clothes in the presence of my colleagues. We fight on a daily basis and hurt each other.

“We always land at the police station after our fight. In fact, we are regular customers at the station,” the pastor said.

The 53-year-old man also accused his wife of threatening his life.

“My wife usually attacks me with weapons whenever we fight.

“I ran away from the house I built 10 years ago to rent an apartment, for safety.

“She chased me with cutlass, bottles and sticks; our neighbours can testify to this.

“I am afraid, I cannot sleep under the same roof with her,” he said.

The petitioner implored the court to dissolve the marriage, as he was no longer interested in it.

Abosede accused her husband of calling her a witch.

“He claimed everywhere he went for solution to his problems that they told him I am behind his predicament.

“My hands are clean; I know nothing about his woes,” said the respondent.

“Bernard abandoned me and the children 10 years ago. I have been taking care of the children,” the 36-year-old fashion designer added.

The mother of four urged the court not to grant her husband’s request, saying “I still love him.”

The court President, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case till October 31 for further hearing.

  • Groom children for leadership, cleric charges parents, others

Senior Pastor of Praise Arena, Jummy Adetoyese-Olagunju, has called on parents and other stakeholders to groom and nurture children for leadership positions.

Adetoyese-Olagunju spoke at a leadership programme on Eko FM in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said parents and other stakeholders have the responsibility to internalise the right values such as respect for rule of law, community service and due consideration for the plights of others as seen in prompt payment of salary, gratuity and pension, as well as pass them on to children.

He said: “When we fail to develop the leadership from childhood, the required conscience, compassion, human feelings, fairness and integrity will either be missing or inadequate.

‘’What we will see is what is prevalent in Africa today where leadership is defined by position and not by ideal values.’’

He noted that the western world has designed leadership models from the early life of children, saying “such children are made to develop the right principles and ideal values to be the standard behaviour as they grow.’’

Adetoyese-Olagunju added: “The western world designs reward system for elementary school pupils for kindness, honesty, fairness and hard-work.

‘’The weekly star awarded to children for kindness, community service, respect and valuing others, including dignity of labour.

‘’The emphasis is on values. Values drive your behaviour and guides once decisions.”

He noted that occupying leadership positions should be to serve others, not for self-aggrandisement, adding that position without service is meaningless.

He noted that research has shown that the values a child learn before age 13 determines the bulk of his or her acts at adulthood.
