  • Cleric jailed for sodomy

An Akure Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 32-year-old prophet, Sunday Waleola, to three years imprisonment for sodomy.

The founder of a Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church in Akure, the Ondo State capital, was alleged to have sodomised some boys (aged six to nine) in his church.

Mrs. Victoria Bob-Manuel handed down the sentence after Waleola was found guilty of child molestation.

Trouble started for the prophet when officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), acting on a tip-off, found him committing the act in his church.

NSCDC legal officer Ebiriku David told the court that the pastor was a “serial homosexual”.

The convict pleaded guilty and blamed the devil for his misdemeanor.

He confessed that he sodomised four children, who he enticed with money.

  • There is hope for Nigeria, says cleric

The General Overseer of the Word Bible Church, Prophet Julius Babatunde Kumoluyi, has assured Nigerians that God will restore the country and rescue it from recession.

Speaking at the launch of his church’s annual prophetic annointing programme, tagged: ‘Annointing for Complete Restoration”, scheduled to hold on Sunday at the church’s branch in Igbara-Odo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Kumoluyi said: “People should not lose hope. Nigeria is God’s project and the Almighty God cannot start a project and not complete it. All we need to do is seek His face in prayers and fasting. He once assured the children of Israel that the Red Sea they see, they will see it no more. And indeed, the Israelites were delivered by God through Moses, while their enemies, the Egypitians, perished in the Red Sea.

“Our present economic challenges and its attendant widespread poverty represent our Red Sea, but just as the Lord told the Israelites through Moses that they will not see the Red Sea again; I prophesise that Nigeria will not see this Red Sea again in Jesus’ name, amen.”

The cleric, who said God has promised to bless those who attend the programme with salvation, healing, breakthrough, deliverance, victory, spiritual counselling, glorification, holy spirit visitation, miracles, among others, advised people who desire restoration for themselves and the nation to be part of it.

  • Experts, cleric urge FG to address economic challenges

Health experts and a cleric have called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the current economic challenges in the country, to check the rate of suicide among Nigerians.

They spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday while reacting to the increasing cases of suicide in the country.

The World Health Organisation reports that every 40 seconds, one person commits suicide somewhere in the world, which tallies to 800,000 suicides annually.

The experts noted that in the last few months in Nigeria, cases of suicide that came to public knowledge had increased and stressed the need for increased government attention in reducing the problem.

Dr Stephen Oluwaniyi, a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, identified poverty, high debt, deprivations, unemployment, job stress and insecurity as related to the current economic challenges in Nigeria.

Oluwaniyi said that the recession was affecting the mental health of some Nigerians, adding that it had also triggered high cases of depression, attempted suicide and other forms of mental illnesses.

He, however, advised members of the public not to be silent about their emotional and psychological problems but seek help from mental health experts.

A Clinical Psychologist, Mr Nathaniel Ayodeji of the Mental Health Foundation, said that suicide had a lot of underlying factors such as feelings of pain, loss, depression, broken relationships and hopelessness.

Ayodeji said that although suicide was regarded as a despicable act in the nation’s culture, many people had been forced into the act as a result of frustration, economic pressures and sense of hopelessness.

”This social problem is a threat to the future of our country and the government needs to act immediately by fixing the economy before the situation goes out of control, ” Ayodeji said.

Rev. Fr. Albert Ebosele of the Holy Family Catholic Church, Sokoto state, called on parents, families, relations, neighbours to watch out and observe others.

This he said was necessary to prevent sudden behavioural changes that might lead to suicide.

”The government, family, institution and individuals can save the situation. We should observe our environment and be watchful of people living around us.

”The government and orientation agencies should develop orientation campaigns and counseling in schools, markets, workplace, to advocate change and impart on peoples’ behaviour.

”People should look up to God and seek His help instead of ending their lives,’’ he said.

Also, Dr Bolanle Ajayi, a Psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro- Psychiatrist Hospital, Yaba, advised Nigerians to adopt proper income planning and management of their emotions.

The precautionary measures he said became necessary to prevent the high rate of mental illness which could be dur to the current economic recession in the country.

“No doubt about it, there is economic recession going on in our country and a lot of people are being affected.

`Even in our wards now, we see a lot of people coming down with depressive illness, suicide, depression, deliberate self-harm and by the time we look at the primary cause of these illnesses, it is actually this ongoing recession.

“Some people are psychologically affected, socially affected and emotionally affected.

”Some people have the ability to bring it out and get over it while some of us do not have such abilities.

“However, the general advice to the public in this economic recession is that, you do your beat, whatever you earn, you have to plan.

“ The era of I spend the money when the money comes is gone.

‘’The era we are now is, when the money comes you sit down on a round table in your house and do a proper plan on your money.

‘’This is because you don’t know when another one will come in.

“As individuals, we have to try and manage our emotions; we have to shift a bit. That means that I have to row with the economic recession so as not to affect my own emotional and mental state.

“We don’t want more people breaking down with psychiatric illness because of recession, ” Ajayi said.

One of the recent cases of suicide in Nigeria is that of one Dr Allwell Orji, who on Sunday, jumped into the Lagoon in Lagos

  • Cleric canvasses faithfulness among pastors

President of Fellowship of Christian Ministers Nigeria, Rev Isaac Ogundiran, has appealed to church leaders to remain faithful to God and the Great Commission.

He spoke with our correspondent at the induction of the newly elected and returned National Executive Officers of the fellowship in Lagos.

Ogundiran said faithfulness is one of the essential qualities of leadership especially for church leaders expected to live above board in all things.

Anyone without it, he said, is unworthy of being addressed as a minister regardless of the titles, skills or talents.

He lamented unfaithfulness among some ministers of the gospel, stating they will receive divine retribution if they don’t repent.

He restated commitment of the fellowship to equip and prepare church leaders for greater service for the Lord.

Grand Patron of the fellowship, Archbishop Magnus Atilade, challenged the newly inducted leaders to live and stand by the word of God.

The word, he said, remains a sure refuge against any storm that may come their ways.

He said: “As a servant to God, you are required to lead in your various communities and fight the common enemy Satan and all his forces in a spiritual warfare with armour of prayer, the word of God, the power of the Holy Spirit and holy living.

“l have learned to stand by the Bible and the word of God as it has never failed me. I am bold and fearless because I stand by God’s word.”

He said their election to the leadership positions in the fellowship was a higher calling that requires greater sense of responsibility and good moral.

  • Cleric to Fed Govt: listen to the people

The General Overseer and Spiritual Leader of Awamaridi Church of Christ, His Grace Eminence Primate Gabriel Olaboye Omotosho has said only can solve Nigeria’s problems.

Omotosho spoke after his church’s thirty–ninth convention and thanksgiving service tagged: “Ma Sunkun Mo” (Cry No More) adapted from Luke 11:13.

He said: “The leaders of this nation should desist from lies, falsehood, and deceit. It is possible for God to show us Mercy in this country if only we can imbibe the culture of truthfulness.

“Our leaders have plunged this Nigeria into her present state. The citizens must pray fervently. Presently, the recession that is biting hard is a sign of good things to come. The leaders should have the fear of God and must desist from falsehood, banditry. If only they can shun looting of public funds, deceit, falsehood, God will show us abundant mercy in Nigeria and things may change better than it was before. Now President Muhammadu Buhari has only succeeded in placing his Hausa/Fulani in a key position and when Yoruba is in a higher position he will be seconded by an Hausa subordinate who will keep on troubling him.”

The church’s chairman, Evang. Temidayo Ogunjobi, said God has wiped away the tears of those who attended the convention.

  • Continue good deeds, cleric charges society at 50

Continue good deeds, cleric charges society at 50

Provost of The African Church Saviour’s Cathedral Agege Lagos, The Venerable Abiodun Afolabi, has charged well-meaning Christians to continue their charitable deeds.

Their acts, he assured, will not go unrewarded by God in heaven and on earth.

He spoke last Sunday during the 50th anniversary of Christ Little Band (CLB).

Afolabi said: “Continue in love and selfless services because God will surely reward you. There is nothing we do that goes unrewarded.”

He praised members of the society for committing their resources and time to the service of God and humanity in half a century, urging them to keep it up.

The cleric urged them to groom younger elements to take over their good works in the church so “that the labour of 50 years will not go up in flames.”

He said members of the adult wing were in injury time and should double up their good conducts as they pass on the torch.

To the youth wing, he asked them to give their all to God in emulation of their forebears.

As they receive the baton, Afolabi urged them to run faster and smarter in working for the church’s expansion.

President of the society, Barrister Olushola Abanikanda, expressed gratitude to God and members for the anniversary.

He lamented the biting recession in the nation, calling on Christians to pray assiduously for reversal of the downturns.

  • Pray for Buhari, Nigeria, cleric tells Christians

The General Overseer of Christ Fire World Evangelism Ministries, Prophet Isreal Owonibi, has urged  Christians across the country to commit more time to praying for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari and the nation   to  reduce the hardship plaguing the country.

He noted that President Buhari is a good leader who wants the best for the nation. “He is a good man, he means well for the nation. Unfortunately, it is the bad people who have corrupted the nation but I strongly believe that God would remove the caterpillars because they want to destroy the pillars for selfish reasons. The level of corruption in the country is quite frightening and we all need to do something about it. This is very important if we want to achieve the desired change.”

He added:  “There is so much hardship in the land and the worst part of it all is that there is no food. We must pray while government must also think of things to do to bring in more food for our people. We need to pray for our president too and with God his healing would be perfected.

‘’These were some of the revelations from the recent three days program tagged: ‘Dealing with the spirit of failure. We had lots of miracles and revelations for the country and God promised to do new things for his people. The Lord also said that we should call Christians to come together and pray. In some of the vision, I saw tension among the people but God is in control.”

  • ‘American cleric trained Abdulmutallab for suicide attack’

Details of the report of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) on Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s failed attempt to blow up an airliner approaching Detroit in December 2009 has been released.

The 200 page-report was released to the New York Times on the order of a federal judge.

According to the report, the Obama administration had first hand testimony from AbdulMuttalab that an American- born cleric, Mr. Anwar al-Awlaki, conceived the plot and trained him for the attack.

The New York Times said the documents justified Obama’s order for killing the cleric in a drone strike in Yemen in 2011. The former US President argued that killing Mr. Awlaki was equivalent to the justified police shooting of a gunman  threatening civilians.

Thus, Awlaki became the first American deliberately killed on the order of a president without criminal charges or trial since the civil war.

The report revealed that Awlaki kept Abdulmuttalab in his house in the province of Shabwah, Yemen, where Al-Qaeda had a large presence, and introduced him to other trainers and bomb makers.

“In training, he fired a Kalashnikov rifle a few times but was never comfortable shooting. His sober devotion to jihadist cause, however, persuaded Mr. Awlaki that he could be trustedwith a suicide attack. When a friend from Nigeria called Abdulmutallab to come home, he realised his parents were behind the call. He agonised, as he prepared for the flight to Detroit, about how to tell them goodbye.”

Abdulmutallab told FBI agents that “only Mr. Awlaki or a comparable figure, not his parents, would have the religious authority to dissuade him from jihad. His last mail from Awlaki offered encouragement for his lethal mission. “I wish it goes well, I wish you all the best,” the cleric wrote.

When the agents asked in retrospect if Mr. Awlaki’s documented patronage of prostitutes disturbed him, he demurred. “It might be false slander, if not, then Mr. Awlaki could repent of those sins and his commitment to jihad would outweigh such transgressions,” he said.

Abdulmutallab is serving a life jail term in US.

  • Recession: Cleric urges Christians to embrace prayers

Christians have been advised to turn to God as the only solution to the recession and other challenges facing the country.

This was the crux of a media event organised to herald the Annual Kingdom Life Summit of the New Estate Baptist Church, Surulere, Lagos.

Chairman /convener of the programme Samson Aderinto Adedokun said the 2017 edition of the programme was intended to bring the people to realise that only God has the solution to numerous problems facing the country.

He said: ”The summit is designed to bring us to the reality that except we prioritise Jesus over and above all else, our numerous concerns will not give way.”

He stated that there was nothing a Christian can achieve on earth without Christ.

“It is needless for us to recount the issues that are ongoing in the life of our nation as we are all conversant with these happening,” the cleric.

Adedokun lamented that despite the increasing number of churches and mosques, which supposed to draw the people and country nearer to God, the country continues to face myriads of problems.

He added that the leadership “is bedeviled by selfishness and corruption, a situation which has helped in increasing neglect and poverty”.

“We are challenged with the ongoing economic pains, financial recklessness, corrupt and selfish expenditure, monstrous inflation, dwindling disposable income and rising poverty.”

The clergy man urged the Federal Government to remain focus on its promise to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

On the faceoff between Apostle Johnson Suleiman and Directorate of State Services (DSS) officials, Adedokun stated that there was nothing wrong with the call for self-defence by Suleiman, adding that it was within the provision of the constitution.

He stressed that there would not be “any need for self-defence if the country embrace Christ because he is able to handle any situation”.

Rev. Achi Kunat, pastor of the church, urged the government to demonstrate more commitment in tackling epileptic power supply, provision of health facilities and tackling the monstrous inflation that has succeeded in rendering the currency useless.

The summit with the theme: “Wonder-Working Worship” would attract clergy men within and outside Lagos, including the host, Rev. Kunat.

  • Cleric denies assault over land dispute

An Ado-Ekiti based Muslim cleric, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Sanusi, has denied complicity in assault, damages and stealing over a land dispute with a couple which landed him in prison in December last year.

Sanusi, who is Ekiti State Amir I Ulama (commander of Muslims and Alfas in Ekiti), spoke with our reporter on Sunday.

He maintained that he was innocent of the offence for which he was jailed.

He explained that his experience in prison showed that there are many innocent people are in custody for flimsy reasons while others are there for unknown and accidental causes.

Sanusi said he purchased one acre of land in Olorunsogo area of Ado Ekiti on which he built eleven flats of two bedroom backed with valid documents including Certificate of Occupancy, land receipt, survey plan, among others.

He said the couple came one day claiming that they had bought a plot of land within his acre for N100,000 expressing surprise on the development since he had fenced the land with building foundation on it seven years earlier with valid documents.

Sanusi said he sought for a peaceful resolution of the dispute being a religious leader but was surprised that he was dragged to court and slammed with charges of assault, damages and stealing as the couple had threatened to use their influence deal with him.

Sanusi said: “The case was taken to a magistrate court where I was accused of assault, stealing of Nokia phone on the land premises, using cutlass to attack them, whereas I presented to the court the pictures where they were destroying the building I erected on the land, but all to no avail.

“I was told at the court that the pictures were exhibits. The judgment was delivered on December 16, 2016. The m said he did not deliver judgement on land issue but “assault”  I was sentenced to three months imprison for assault, damages and stealing.

“I didn’t commit any assault. My position as a religious leader in the state is so sensitive that I dare not hurt a fly! Not even fellow human being. For instance, you can imagine that I steal Nokia phone, when my children are using phones that are better off.  What an embarrassment!

“It is high time for our judiciary to hammer on calling a spade a spade and disallow the negative influence of manipulation. From my experience in the prison, I discovered that a lot are there in the prison because of flimsy reason or unknown accidental causes.”
