Club World Cup: Inter Milan star stranded in Iran after Israel attacks

Inter Milan striker Medhi Taremi has been left stranded in Iran following attacks from Israel in Tehran.

Taremi, 32, is part of the Inter squad taking part in the Club World Cup in the USA over the next month, with their first match taking place on Wednesday against Mexican side Monterrey.

Taremi returned to his homeland to accept Iran’s Footballer of the Year award and was planning to fly straight out to Los Angeles to link up with his teammates.

However, the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, which saw Iranian military and nuclear targets hit with missile attacks, has resulted in all flights from Iranian airports being grounded.

Inter are in ‘constant contact’ with the striker, Sky Italia reports, as they seek to find a solution that will allow him to leave Iran and join up with his teammates.

Iran was targeted with several waves of airstrikes on Thursday and Friday, launching retaliatory attacks on Israel overnight.

More than 78 people have been killed in Iran, including four of its top security chiefs, with 320 wounded, most of them civilians. Three people died in Israel, with dozens more injured in Iranian strikes.

Taremi had also returned to Iran to play for the national team in World Cup qualifying matches against Qatar and North Korea, the last of which took place at Tehran’s Aazadi Stadium on Tuesday.

Ronaldo rejects offers to play at Club World Cup

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo says he will not play at this month’s Club World Cup after turning down offers from participating teams.

The 40-year-old is out of contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr at the end of June.

In May, Fifa president Gianni Infantino raised the prospect of Ronaldo joining a team involved at the Club World Cup after Al-Nassr’s failure to qualify.

“I will not be at the Club World Cup,” said Ronaldo.

“Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense and others did not, but you can’t try and do everything. You can’t catch every ball.”

Ronaldo posted on social media that “the chapter is over” following Al-Nassr’s final league game of the season in May, leading to speculation he was set for a move.

However, sources have told BBC Sport that the club are confident of extending Ronaldo’s deal.

Speaking before Portugal’s Nations League final against Spain on Sunday (20:00 BST), Ronaldo said a decision on his future was “almost final”.

The striker joined Al-Nassr in 2023 after the termination of his deal with Manchester United.

He has scored 99 goals in 111 appearances for the club, including 35 times in 41 matches last term.

Ronaldo scored the winner in a 2-1 victory against Germany on Wednesday to book Portugal’s spot in the Nations League final.

The Croat has won 28 trophies, including six Champions Leagues and four domestic titles, since joining Real from Spurs in 2012.

“I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next,” he said.

“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person.

Premier League champions Manchester City have been drawn with Juventus, Wydad AC and Al Ain in Group G for next year’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Lionel Messi and Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami are in Group A and will face Al Ahly in the opening match of the expanded 32-team tournament before games against Porto and Palmeiras.

The tournament, featuring top teams from around the world, will be held in 12 stadiums around the country from June 15-July 13 and serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the U.S. Mexico and Canada.

Manchester City won the most recent Club World Cup in 2023 under the old format and sit fourth in the Premier League after being hit hard by injuries to key players such as Spanish midfielder and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.

City, who this year won an unprecedented fourth straight English top-flight title, will face Wydad AC in their opening match and Al Ain before closing out the group stage against Juventus.

The draw, conducted by Italian World Cup winner and former Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero, included a recorded message from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in which he complimented FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“We’ve known each other a long time, and I’m so honoured to have this kind of a relationship because soccer is going through the roof. As everybody knows, it’s been doing fantastically well … and it really is taking over the United States in terms of the sport.”

Everything you need to know about the Club World Cup

Manchester City will find out their semi-final opponents at the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

The seven-team tournament began on Tuesday, with Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad defeating Auckland City 3-0 in the first round.

European champions City and Copa Libertadores winners Fluminense are both automatic semi-finalists.

City will play either Mexico’s Leon or Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in the last four on Tuesday.

Brazil’s Fluminense play Al Ahly or Al-Ittihad on Monday.

It is the final edition of the competition in its current format after Fifa confirmed an expanded tournament featuring 32 teams will take place in 2025.

    What’s the format?

The seeded tournament saw Al-Ittihad take on the winners of the 2023 OFC Champions League, Auckland, in the only game in the first round.

Al-Ittihad now join CAF champions Al Ahly, 2022 AFC champions Urawa Red Diamonds and Concacaf winners Leon in round two, which takes place on Friday.

The winners of those matches advance to the semi-finals, at which stage Manchester City and Fluminese enter the tournament.

The semi-finals will be played on Monday and Tuesday, with the final and a third-place play-off scheduled for Friday, 22 December.

    Where are the venues?

Saudi Arabia is using two stadiums, both in the city of Jeddah, to host seven fixtures over a 10-day period.

King Abdullah Sports City, which boasts a capacity of 62,345 – the home of Al-Ittihad – will host five fixtures, including the final, with two games set to take place at the 27,000-seater Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium.

Juventus and AC Milan met in the 2018 Supercoppa Italiana final at King Abdullah Sports City, while it has also hosted high-profile boxing events, including the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua when the Ukrainian won by split decision to retain his WBA (Super), WBO and IBF heavyweight titles.

The smaller Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium will host Urawa Red Diamonds v Leon in the second round and the third-place play-off.

The last 10 editions of the Fifa Club World Cup have been won by European teams.

Since the competition started in 2000, 11 cubs have lifted the trophy with eight hailing from Europe and three from Brazil.

Brazilian rivals Corinthians and Vasco da Gama met in first final, with the former claiming victory via penalties after the match ended goalless. Corinthians also won the competition in 2012.

Sao Paulo (2005) and Internacional (2006) are the other two clubs from Brazil to have gone all the way.

Inter Milan were the first winners from Europe, beating Argentine outfit Boca Juniors 4-2 in an entertaining final in 2007.

Manchester United became the first English club to enjoy success when they overcame Ecuadorian outfit LDU Quito in 2008, while Liverpool and Chelsea were triumphant in 2019 and 2021 respectively.

Real Madrid ran out 5-3 winners against Al-Hilal in last year’s final.

Los Blancos have won the Fifa Club World Cup on five occasions – more than any other team, with Barcelona (3) next on the honours list.
