Tinubu distributes CNG buses to students

President Bola Tinubu has donated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to students across the six geopolitical zones in the country to ease their mobility.

The six buses were distributed through the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Students Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon, to the Zonal Coordinators of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in Abuja.

President of NANS, Comrade Lucky Emonefe handed the keys of the vehicles to the respective zonal coordinators at a brief ceremony.

The vehicles are expected to promote a more efficient and affordable transportation system for students.

Speaking during the distribution on Friday, Asefon said the initiative was part of a broader promise made by President Tinubu to support students in Nigeria, especially following the fuel subsidy removal and attendant high cost of transportation.

Asefon emphasised that while this gesture is significant, it is just the beginning, assuring Nigerian students that the current administration would continue to accord welfare of students high priority.

He said in the past, some students had to hire buses at exorbitant costs, sometimes up to N200,000 to attend programmes and conferences as well as movement within the campuses.

According to him, with the new buses, students will only pay a token fee, making it much more affordable.

“The buses are not just for transport they also provide students with the confidence that they are using vehicles dedicated to their needs,” he said.

Comrade Asefon stated that the maintenance of the buses will be closely monitored, with any issues to be promptly addressed by his office.

He said schools will also take responsibility for maintaining buses stationed at their campuses, ensuring the longevity of their usage.

The President of NANS, Emonefe expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the unprecedented move, stating that it would significantly ease the cost of transportation for Nigerian students.

He stated that the initiative is the first of its kind in NANS’s history, with over 20 buses being distributed to various zones.

The NANS president emphasised that this achievement was made possible through constructive dialogue and leadership, without the need for protests.

He said: “It is going to be very useful to Nigeria students, it will ease the cost of transportation in their campuses.

“So, we are happy and I want to thank the President for this gesture, and this is the first time it has ever happened in the history of NANS, since NANS has been founded.”

The joint leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) and the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has clarified recent petition alleging unequal distribution of CNG buses among student community.

The trio association representing interest of Polytechnic, University and College of Education students in Nigeria and diaspora appealed to other (National Excos) of NANS to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and settle their differences.

A statement jointly signed by NAPS National President, Com. Ridwan Munirudeen, NANCES National President, Com. Eegunjobi Samuel, and NAUS National President, Com. Josiah Oche explained the sharing formula of the CNG buses was just and fair to all structures and organs of NANS, saying interest of Polytechnics, Universities and Colleges of Education was captured in the sharing formula.

According to the trio, one CNG bus each was given to the three sister bodies for fairness and transparency, adding that all NANS Coordinators will be given one each to be operating within their zones.

The statement reads: “All the National Executives of NANS should eliminate the sense of entitlement, rooting for individuals to be beneficiaries, rather we advised them on focusing on how to manage those buses that has been given to their respective secretariats and zones, afterall, all National executives belong to one zone or the other.

“All aggrieved member of the National Executives and that of Senate Arm should channel their grievances to the National President and Senate President respectively, we enjoin them to embrace peaceful discussion to settle the pressing issues amicably and off the media.

“We reaffirmed to the public that, the buses were shared inline with the tradition of NANS, so as to capture the interest of the structures and organs (Sister bodies & Zonal Coordinators) of the body (NANS).

“The transparency of the leadership of NANS under Comrade Lucky Emonefe and Sen. Akinteye Babatunde is not only limited to the fairness distribution of CNG buses alone, but extended to other palliative and good gesture coming directly from the Federal Government and other government agencies to the students community.

He said the newly acquired CNG-powered LSM buses unveiled at the Lagos airport are eco-friendly with zero emission and designed with accessibility features for persons with disabilities.

The deployment, he added, was in compliance with the President’s goal of reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels of petrol and diesel and promoting sustainable use of CNG to power vehicles in the country.

The introduction of the CNG to power automobiles is one of the Federal Government’s initiatives to ease the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the masses.

The CNG buses, according to the Managing Director of Lanre Shittu Motors, Taiwo Shittu, come in two specifications: a 31-seater for airport shuttle services and a 54-seater for mass transit city buses.

He said they had been equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, viewing screens, and charging stations.

With the introduction of the CNG buses, he said, LSM aimed to provide a more sustainable and efficient transportation solution not only to Lagos but other parts of the country.

  • Trade unions, students got 124 CNG buses, says agency

Trade unions, students got 124 CNG buses, says agency

As part of steps  to ease transportation  of workers and students, the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) this year gave out 124 buses for mass transit.

The CNG buses were allocated to trade unions and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Also, more states are joining the CNG scheme with increase in acquisition of buses and establishment of conversion centres.

The P-CNGi Programme Director/Chief Executive Officer,  Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, gave further insights yesterday.

He said the main objective of the CNG Initiative was mass transportation, which was already being achieved.

He said: “About 124 CNG buses  were allocated to trade unions and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) nationwide.

“The state by state report didn’t capture all the states impacted and the impact. In the case of FCT , Niger and Nasarawa, additional 15 High Capacity Buses were received through the Ministry of Transport Partnership with three transport unions, transporting passengers from surburbs  of  Abuja city to Nasarawa (Keffi, Masaka,Nyanya), Niger (Zuba) and FCT (Gwagwalada).

“We gave 30 to Lagos in the VI-Ajah route via LGA based  transit company , Iru land transport. Also, 20 CNG buses to Kogi State.

“Niger , FCT and Nasarawa  have over 30 conversion centres in between them and NNPC opened new six refueling centres.”

On the 150,000 kits and 50,000 conversions  “expected to achieve” , he said: “For distribution we know we will exceed but  may fall short on actual conversions.”

Oluwagbemi explained the rationale for extending the CNG Initiative to trade and student unions.

He said: “It was critical that trade unions and student unions buy into the President’s  agenda of subsidy removal and sustainable energy transition”. The provision of CNG buses was part of the deal reached in the process of negotiations and PCNGi delivered these in line with those critical agreements that birthed the reforms.

“The unions have enthusiastically deployed their buses across  their operations and dedicated to serving the public. For example the TUC has empowered their constituent transport union (RTEAN) with the buses that is now being utilized.”

On the involvement of states in CNG initiative, Oluwagbemi said “their participation have been appreciable and encouraging. “

He added: “Yes, several state governments have stepped up with regards to CNG and direct engagements have been fruitful to date.”

“For example the Chairman of the Governors forum, the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abulrazaq has been instrumental to the kick off in Kwara State which included PCNGI investments in the dispensing and conversion infrastructure at Ilorin, and launch of buses for Kwara mass transit.”

“ In like manner, Akwa Ibom, Kogi, Kano, Kaduna, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, Edo, Rivers , Nasarawa, Kebbi, Delta and Benue have all been engaging   directly and making progress.”

SMEDAN opens CNG conversion,  training centre

The Director General, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) Charles Odii has commissioned the conversion and training centre for CNG.

The DG said this initiative marks an important step in supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which will promote cleaner energy solutions, as it is in partnership with Rolling Energy, and Presidential Initiative on -CNG.

Odii stated this at the commissioning of CNG conversion and training centre in Abuja, stating that this new center is designed to convert vehicles to run on CNG, an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuels.

He said: “This new move has the capacity to  convert nine (9) vehicles daily with a dedicated team of 20 technicians, this center will help SMEs reduce transportation costs and also adapt to changing energy needs. It will also train young Nigerians in CNG conversion, maintenance, and repair, equipping them with practical skills and opening up new business opportunities.

“This project aligns with SMEDAN’s GROW Nigerian strategy, which focuses on providing SMEs with Guidance, Resources, Opportunities, and Workforce Support. By adopting CNG, we are helping SMEs cut costs while promoting sustainable energy practices. This effort is particularly timely as businesses face rising fuel costs following subsidy removal”.

Odii noted that beyond the technical benefits, this initiative has a human impact as it provides practical skills and fostering entrepreneurship, ‘we are empowering a new generation to take control of their future. We hope many of those trained here will go on to establish their own conversion centers, further expanding the reach of this program’.

Speaking, the Chairman, CEO Rolling Energy, Mubarak Umar Danbatta said with less than two million naira worth of tools, a space and a Standard Organization Of Nigeria SON, certified number  you have set up a CNG centre. You will be getting kit allocation from the PCNGI, they would send you a list of customers which you are expected to convert their vehicles, once you successfully convert you are paid one hundred and fifty thousand naira, for each vehicle conversion.

Enugu to introduce CNG buses, creates new ministry

The Enugu State Government is taking steps to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as part of the efforts to preserve the environment and also make transportation affordable for citizens.

The state government has equally created the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to oversight and catalyse investment in the energy and mineral sector.

These were made known by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, and the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, after a meeting of the State Executive Council at the weekend.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Prof. Onyia said, “Recall that earlier in this administration, the governor signed the Enugu State Electricity Law, and that Law requires that an independent regulator will be set up, but there will also be a supervising ministry that will handle all our engagements in the energy space and also in our mineral resource space.

“Considering the level of mineral resources availability in Enugu State, the government had decided, at the end of EXCO today, to now create this Ministry and the mandate includes oversight of most of our investment opportunities within the solid mineral space and also to help catalyse investments in the energy space. EXCO resolved that this new Ministry would take effect immediately.”

On his part, Dr. Ozor said the state was not only introducing CNG buses, but also building the supporting infrastructure to ensure ease of operation and safety of commuters, noting that the government is also doing its part to not only invest more in buying CNG buses but also to support private sector investment in the transportation space.

“The Executive Council resolved that it is very important for the state and her citizens to begin the process of transitioning from petrol to CNG which saves about half of the cost of fuel in our transportation, thereby reducing the cost of transportation for our people.

“All these are geared towards bringing a safe and affordable and sustainable transportation system. This ties into the infrastructure that is underway – the bus terminals, improved bus shelters, the internet of things, and gadgets in these buses that will allow us to be able to know where our citizens are and make sure that they are safe from any incident.

“The state is also creating an enabling environment to attract the right investors within the CNG space and the state has already done that with partnership with Greenville Energy,” he stated.

He explained that the government was already constructing a massive CNG mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, which would have the capacity to serve the entire South East, adding that the construction of the ancillary daughter stations that would look like filling stations would commence in a matter of weeks.

The Federal Government, through the Presidential CNG Initiative (P-CNGi) has handed over 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to Iru Land Transport Company Limited. The 20 CNG buses like others, were procured by the Federal Ministry of Finance under the palliative programme through local manufacturers with repayment over a period of time through fares paid by commuters.

Speaking at the formal handover of the 20 CNG buses and the signing ceremony for Lagos Strategic CNG Conversion Partners, PCNGi Progamme Director, Micheal Oluwagbemi, said the launch of the first set of CNG buses was aimed at crashing transport cost in Lagos.

“This handover ceremony and MoU signing event not only symbolise a step towards greener transportation in Lagos but also represent a commitment to sustainable development, safety, and a reduction in transportation costs,” Oluwagbemi said.

He explained that  PCNGi is a component of the palliative intervention of President Bola Tinubu’s administration directed at providing succor to the masses occasioned by the transitive hardships of the fuel subsidy removal policy of the Federal Government.

As such, there is a need to consider alternative sources of fuel, primarily CNG and EV for vehicles. We are working towards reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, enhancing our energy independence and contributing to a more secure energy future in Nigeria’’.

Explaining the rationale for the partnership with the Iru kingdom corridor in Lagos, Oluwagbemi said it was anchored on the community’s experience in transportation, haven previously established and operated an effective bus schemes. Besides, he further added, the location would also quickly help government in demonstrating to Nigerians the impact of CNG buses in lowering transport cost, owing to its strategic location.

He added that the PCNGi would also be working with Ibile Oil and Gas which is a Lagos State agency to fast track the conversion of commuter buses through the 12 conversion centers  that have been signed on to the PCNGi  programme.

To further make the initiative more widely acceptable, one million commuter buses will be converted to CNG free of charge.
