    No protester missing in Chevron/Ugborodo face-off, says CNL

    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has denied reports that three protesters at its Terminal and Escravos Gas—To-Liquid (EGTL) jetties in Warri Southwest council area of Delta state, are missing.

    This was contained in a statement by CNL’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Esimaje Brikinn.

    CNL, operator of the joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and CNL – (NNPCL/CNL JV), reiterated its commitment to partnership with various stakeholders, including the communities neighbouring its areas of operations in the Niger Delta, for sustainable development.

    The company stated it is engaging with relevant stakeholders including the protesters, community leaders, traditional rulers, the Board of Trustees (BOTs) of the Warri Onshore Host Community Development Trust (HCDT), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Delta State Government, and other critical stakeholders to ensure the peaceful vacation of the protesters who have blocked access to the Terminal and EGTL jetties since Tuesday, November 21, 2023.  

    Maintaining that CNL operates in strict compliance with applicable laws and regulations, Brikinn said: “As a law-abiding corporate citizen, CNL is committed and continues to make progress in the operationalization of the respective HCDTs in compliance with the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021.

    “We continue to collaborate with the relevant stakeholders, including community leaders and traditional rulers towards the operationalization of the HCDTs. 

    “Also, CNL is committed to ensuring the participation of community workers in the EGTL TAM in line with the manpower mobilization plan”, he said.

    Describing as “untrue”, reports about some protesters allegedly missing, he claimed that “verifiable reports on ground indicate that none of the protesters are missing”. 

    He reiterated CNL’s priority on the safety of the people, the environment, and assets in all its operations and noted that CNL will continue to engage the relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues amicably.

    “CNL advocates respect for the rule of law and use of constructive dialogue in the resolution of all issues,” he concluded.

    The protesters are among others, demanding for the renaming of the Warri Kingdom Onshore Host Community Development Trust (HCDT), involvement in the nomination of additional persons for inclusion on the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the HCDT and mobilization of their community workers for the EGTL Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) activities.

    Efforts to get comments from an Ugborodo community leader, Alex Eyengho, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

  • Chevron, EGCDF commission/handover N600m cottage hospital to Delta Govt

    The Egbema-Gbaramatu Community Development Foundation (EGCDF) and Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) have commissioned and handed over a N596 million cottage hospital project over to the Delta state government.

    The project, which handing over ceremony held in Polobubo (Tsekelewu) in Warri North council area of Delta state, was built through a Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) between Chevron, operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Ventures and EGCDF.

    Speaking at the ceremony, the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House Asaba, Chief Tam Brisibe commended the management of the EGCDF and Chevron for the laudable project.

    He said the state government has made the health center one if its centers for the Delta State Health Contributory Scheme which will provide free health care services to children under five years, pregnant women and the elderly people above 65 years.

    He said “The Delta State Government is very happy to be a part of this ceremony. Development is a partnership, government alone cannot do everything. Today we are commissioning this primary health center, which is being made possible by the partnership between EGCDF and Chevron/NNPC Joint Venture.

    “The Delta State Government is coming in to provide the necessary support to run this facility. The government of Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa is one, that undoubtedly have the interest of the people of Delta State at heart.

    “The SMART agenda that he (Okowa) came into government with has allowed him to provide health facilities in different parts of the state. It had led him to develop parts of the state that hitherto have not been seeing the presence of government.”

    He also promised to look into all the requests the community has made earlier saying, “This government is a government that has done what other past governments are afraid to do.”

    The General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, (PGPA), CNL, Mr Esimaje Brikinn who spoke at the ceremony said the takeover of the hospital built by the EGCDF under Chevron’s GMoU was a triumph of partnership.

    While thanking the leadership of the EGCDF and the state government for making the cottage hospital part of the Delta State Health Contributory Health Scheme, Brikkin, who was represented by Mr Sam Daibo, noted that the GMoU process will be improved on.

    “The new improvement on the GMoU concept which we call GMoU+, is helping us to monitor and evaluate the impact of the GMoU in our communities while we continue to realize our individual and collective aspiration through the process.

    “It focuses on business development and economic empowerment programs: third party partnership and collaboration, delivery on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Operational Excellence and Human Rights,” Brikinn added.

    Earlier, the National President, Polobobu/Tsekelewu National Council, Mr Ebilate Mac-Yoroki, commended Governor Okowa for taking over the cottage hospital, saying the gesture would enable the community and other neighbouring communities enjoy seamless provision of a primary healthcare like others.

    Mac-Yoroki, who whose speech was read by the Secretary, Polobobu/Tsekelewu National Council, Barr Midweek Kokuru, however, said that as a community blessed with abundant mineral resources which the nation is feeding from, the basic amenities they enjoyed was a far cry from what they are supposed to enjoy.

    He said the community is suffering from ecological and environmental degradation orchestrated by oil exploration and exploitation, stressing that the activities of oil multinationals have destroyed their economic trees and vegetation which provided the people with lucrative livelihood.

    “The damage is so enormous that the rivers and canals dry up in the dry season while flooding occurs during the rainy season which we experience in an unusual dimension during the rainy season last year, 2018. Marine transportation became almost impossible and fishing activities paralyzed entirely, Mac-Yoroki, said.

    The community urged the state government to dredge their rivers, reclaimed their land, build internal roads in the community, construct a major Trans-Egbema Road from Otuama to Polobubo from Polobubo to Ogbudugbudu and help get all the oil companies in the area sign proper MoU with them.

    They also requested the state government to build a modular refinery in the area, provide portable drinking water, install the 100kva generating plant provided for the community by DESOPADEC, sandfill the Tsekelewo Secondary School and build a Higher Institution/Skill acquisition center for them.

    Chairman of the EGCDF, Comrade Jude Ukori commended Governor Okowa for taking over the project, calling on other stakeholders including the Federal Government, Donors, and interventionist agencies at all levels to partner with the foundation so as to positively impact on the lives of the people.

    Also, the monarch of the Egbema Kingdom, Bini Pere 111, said he was overwhelmed with joy seeing that the age-long desire of having a primary healthcare facility in Egbema Kingdom has come to fruition through the collective efforts of EGCDF, Chevron Nigeria Limited and its joint venture partners, NNPC.

  • CNL gets multiple awards at NAICE SPE

    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and CNL, emerged Best Exhibitor at the Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE) of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), which held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    At the award night, to round off the conference, CNL’s Frank Ogbuagu, a Reservoir Simulation Engineer, clinched the prize for the Best Technical Paper.

    Frank’s paper titled: “Managing reservoir and operational decline without a Rig: An Okan case study,” was co-written by Femi Afolayan, Femi Esan and Nsitie Obot – all CNL employees.

    CNL was adjudged the best exhibitor based on its excellent performance in the assessment criteria of content/quality of material exhibited, aesthetic of booth, audience engagement and conduct of booth personnel. The assessment of exhibitors was conducted by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), an international Consultancy Service Company engaged by SPE to appraise exhibitors.

    CNL was honoured with a Distinguished Corporate Support Award by the Lagos Section of the SPE at its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

    The award was received by Eddie Agbongiator,the firm’s Onshore Asset Manager.

    Mr. Esimaje Brikinn, the General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs (PGPA) of CNL, expressed the company’s appreciation for the recognition and award. “We are delighted to receive the awards because SPE and members of the adjudication panel thrive on excellence,” Mr. Brikinn said.

    Avengers attack Chevron, hit 3 manifolds

    Suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers on Wednesday blew up three Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, manifolds in Digbolo, near Dibi in Warri North Local Government of Delta State.

    According reports late on Wednesday, the incident occurred at about 11.00 pm.

    Claiming responsibility for the attack, the Avengers said: “Between the hours of 10:50pm to 11:10 pm, our (Niger Delta Avengers) strike team blew up Chevron manifolds.”

    This is contained in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mudoch Agbinibo, while wishing Muslims a happy Eid-il-fitri celebration, said: “The manifolds are RMP 22, 23 and 24.”

    Meanwhile, the group denied carrying out any attack on the NNPC pipeline in Eleme, Rivers State, which was reported through a phony Facebook account of a Niger Delta Avengers.

    Warning the public that it is shutting down all its social media accounts, the group said: “Niger delta Avengers is not out to mislead the public, as a result, we are closing our entire social network accounts.

    “This Facebook Account/page is an impostor page that was open by fraudster to deceive the general public,” adding: “We warn any group that wants to do anything to go about their activities without tagging us (Niger Delta Avengers).

    “Instead do your activities and claim responsibility. Niger Delta Avengers is not out to mislead the public as a result we are closing all our Social network accounts and will be using our websites to pass information to the general public.”

  • Residents cry out over military occupations

    Residents of Agura community in Ikorodu have cried out over the occupation of their land by soldiers.

    They said they can no longer access their community because of the presence of the military men drafted to the land by Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL).

    The community expressed concerns at a press briefing held at the premises of the Lagos Television, LTV 8 at the weekend.

    The spokesman and Secretary of Agura community, Olaniran Omoyele, claimed Chevron bought the land, which is about 365 hectares in 2005, with forged documents from land grabbers.

    “When this was brought to the notice of the elders and leaders of the community, they wrote an official letter through the community solicitor to Chevron Nigeria Limited intimating it of the true ownership of the land and the illegality of the purchase.

    “The letter was acknowledged by CNL but it failed to do the needful,” he explained.

    Omoyele said the community has written and protested this matter to the Lagos state House of Assembly for intervention, saying the House was looking into the matter.

    According to him: “The era of militarisation is over in Nigeria and Agura community cannot be an exception. “We demand that the frightening looking soldiers oppressing and intimidating us should vacate our inheritance.

    “We therefore advice Chevron to either obey the Nigerian Law or leave this country.”

    He added: “Our progenitors are the rightful owners of the land known as Agura town comprising several villages, which includes Ilaba, Oju, Agemo, Igbalu, Iponmi, Aiyetoro, Oke-Olokun, Ewu-Agbo, Igbose, Alaru-Maku, Papa etc.”

    Asked why the community has not explored the legal option by taking Chevron to court since the purchase documents are fake, Omoyele said the community wants to exhaust every amicable settlement method before opting for the legal option.

    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture, has won the 2013 Electronic Payment Excellence Award of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    According to the CBN, the company won the award, in the multinational category, for its “commitment to the Federal Government’s transformation initiative on end-to-end electronic payment of all forms of salaries, pensions, suppliers and taxes.”

    The General Manager, Policy, Government & Public Affairs, Chevron, Deji Haastrup said Governor of CBN Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, jointly presented the award at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

    The CBN governor noted the company’s alignment with and promotion of a national initiative (electronic payment), which has caused CNL to be “singled out as a model worthy of emulation within your industry category and the country at large.”

    CNL General Manager, Finance, Jerry Uwakwe, thanked the CBN for recognizsing CNLs commitment to electronic payment saying it is in keeping with the company’s value of partnership and ingenuity through technological innovation.

    Chevron begins Meren, Sonam platforms construction

    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC/CNL) Joint Venture, has taken a major leap toward using natural gas mined from its operations. It also eliminating gas flaring from its assets.

    The company has begun the construction of two new platforms – Meren field Gas Gathering and Compression Platform (GGCP) and the Sonam field Non-associated Gas Wellhead Projects (NWP) – meant for the development of Meren and Sonam fields. The construction of the platforms is ongoing in Nigeria and South Korea.

    According to sources, on completion, the GGCP and NWP are expected to deliver 120 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d) and 300mmcf/d to the Escravos Gas Project (EGP).

    The fabrication phase of the platforms has started. The Nigerdock Nigeria Plc located at the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone in Lagos is doing the fabrication for the Meren GGCP jacket, piles and bridges and will also handle the entire Sonam NWP and associated structures as a sub-contractor to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea.

    The topsides of the Meren GGCP, are being handled by HHI and will be fabricated at HHI fabrication yard in Ulsan, Korea.

    Chevron’s General Manager, Facilities Engineering and Major Capital Projects, Mr Augustine Emelobe, who spoke on the projects, on behalf of the Director, NNPC/CNL Joint Venture, Mr Supo Shadiya, described the project as another success story, which showcases Chevron Nigeria’s commitment to and compliance with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Contnet Development (NOGICD) Act. He noted that the company is proud to be associated with Nigerdock and HHI.

    He said: “We are pleased to be partnering with an indigenous company on this significant project, as this would build local content.”

    Managing Director, Nigerdock, Mr Chris Bennet, appreciated the opportunity to work on the project, saying it has brought about huge expansion to Nigerdock, including the building of a new paint shop, new quayside and upgrade of assembly area, steel rolling equipment, construction of new accommodation facilities, and purchase of new cranes, among others.

    On the project, the Executive Vice President of Hyundai Heavy Industries Mr D. Y. Kim said, Meren and Sonam are offshore assets located off Delta State. The cost of the platforms were not disclosed, but it was gathered that the two platforms may cost about $1.5 billion.

    In late 2011, a final investment decision was made for the $1.7 billion development of the Sonam Field. The 40 percent-owned and operated project is designed to use the EGP facilities to deliver natural gas to the domestic gas market and produce a total of 30,000 barrels of liquids per day. First production is expected in 2016.

    Also, with a 36.7 per cent interest, Chevron is the largest shareholder in the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited, which owns and operates the 421-mile (678-km) West African Gas Pipeline.

    The pipeline supplies Nigerian natural gas to customers in Benin, Ghana and Togo for industrial applications and power generation and has the capacity to transport 170 million cubic feet of natural gas per daily.
