  • Cnpp cautions monarchs on zoning

•Traditional rulers warned not to dabble in politics

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Ekiti State has cautioned traditional rulers on their push for zoning, stressing that merit is the best criterion for selecting the governorship flag bearers.

It said the monarch’s position on zoing to Ekiti South Senatorial District smacked of .

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, CNPP Director of Publicity and Strategy Deacon Olu Akomolafe said: “All parties should be encouraged to follow their constitutions so that the best can emerge from each party so that Ekiti will choose the best of the best.”

The monarchs, who rose from a meeting with Governor Ayo Fayose at the weekend, vowed to “mobilise their subjects to vote against any political party that fields governorship candidate from outside Ekiti South.”

Akomolafe said, although the monarchs have the freedom to air their views, they should not throw stones.

He added: “Ekiti is homogeneous, unlike many other states in Nigeria. Ikere is the next town to Ado while going to Akure so the thin line between Central and South is the bounding between the two ancient towns.

“Any formula that will make an Ekiti man see one as his kinsmen as against the other should be rejected in its entirety. Whether the governor comes from Central, North or South, CNPP is of the opinion that it is sure that he will be an Ekiti person.

“Our condition is that he or she should must be capable of all ending the present sufferings of Ekiti people. He or she should be a type that will give us the good things of life like good roads, potable water, jobs for our youth, salary as and when due, among others.

“CNPP does not wish to imply that Ekiti South cannot produce the next governor. They can, but the selection muts be subjected to a standard that is general and not restricted to just one area of the entire state.”

Also, the Ekiti Oke Renaissance Group has urged the traditional rulers to be suspicious of politicians who may want to use them as cannon fodders ahead of the governorship election.

Its Board of Trustees Chairman, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu, expressed disappointment with the action of the monarchs.

Osinkolu expressed shock that the monarchs could be manipulated by politicians to support their self-seeking agenda.

He condemned the attempt by Fayose to disrupt peaceful transition  by recruiting royal fathers to cause  disharmony among the electorate. Osinkolu maintained that it was wrong for the governor to tell the monarchs to reject aspirants outside the South District, adding that the action was “undemocratic and violates the fundamental human rights of voters.”

“The choice of who becomes the governor is the prerogative of the electorate. Mr Fayose should please excuse the palace from desecration,” Osinkolu concluded.

  • CNPP hails Fayemi for turnaround in Mining sector

CNPP hails Fayemi for turnaround in Mining sector

The Conference of Nigeria’s Political Parties (CNPP) in Ekiti State has hailed the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, for turning around the Solid Minerals sector as attested to by President Muhammadu Buhari in his 2018 budget speech.

The group said the attestation to Fayemi’s performance in the Mines and Steel Ministry and the growth of the Nigerian economy was historic and historical.

It said Fayemi’s hard work and vision, which he derived from the collective vision of President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC), propelled the minister to deploy his energies and workers towards the feats he achieved to revamp the economy for the welfare of Nigerians.

In a statement yesterday at the end of its emergency meeting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, CNPP State Chairman Tunji Ogunlola said the President’s observation of turnaround in the mining sector under Fayemi’s watch was a testimony to the minister’s dedication to accomplish his missions.

Presdent Buhari, at his 2018 budget presentation on Tuesday at a joint sitting of the National Assembly, lauded Fayemi’s successful take-off of economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government through the mining sector.

The President cited the increase in solid minerals earnings to the national economy, among others.

He said: “Significant progress has also been made in the Solid Minerals Development sector. In Ondo State, for instance, work is ongoing to fully exploit the bitumen resources to meet the 600,000 metric tonnes (MTs) of asphalt imported per annum for roads and other construction projects.

“To consolidate on these efforts, we have also established a N30 billion Solid Minerals Development Fund to support other minerals exploration activities across the country.”

Ogunlola said the President’s observation of the significant boost in the performance of the mining sector further confirmed an earlier commendation by the Senate Committee of Solid Minerals, which applauded Fayemi’s hard work and transparency in the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government.

He said: “The Mining and Steel sector, which is a viable alternative to oil, has remained untapped over the years until Dr. Fayemi took charge of the sector and turned it around, thereby making the dream of making the sector a tool for wealth and job creation a reality.

“From a paltry contribution of N700 million to the national purse before he took charge, Fayemi worked hard day and night with his men to contribute N2 billion within one year, making it one of  the highest sectoral contributors to the economy, apart from oil. This figure has also been surpassed by the first half of this year.

  • CNPP slams Fayose for ‘diverting’ pensioners’ funds

    •Commissioner: it’s not true

The Ekiti State Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has expressed shock at alleged diversion of funds meant to pay pensioners and workers by the Ayo Fayose administration.

Reacting to a report by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which indicted the Fayose government for allegedly diverting N680 million bailout fund, the CNPP described the alleged diversion as “callous and greedy”.

But Commissioner for Information Lanre Ogunsuyi dismissed the allegation, saying it was a “figment of imagination of those peddling it”.

He described the Fayose administration as “the most transparent in the history of Ekiti.”

A statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by CNPP’s Director of Publicity, Kunle Omotayo, said 16 political parties in the state met and regretted that pensioners and workers were owed several arrears after the state had received intervention funds from the Federal Government.

The statement said: “For the first time in the history of Ekiti State, workers have turned petty thieves, stealing pots of soup and some stealing farm produce to stay alive, while several others have become beggars before they can make ends meet…”

Ogunsuyi challenged any person or group with evidence of the alleged diversion to come out with same or forever keep silent.

He said: “I sympathise with those celebrating what the EFCC has done; it is quite unfortunate. Ekiti is in a difficult financial situation because of the repayment of loans obtained by Fayemi administration. We have repaid N40 billion in the last 36 months, deducted at N1.2 billion per month.

“The allegations of treasury looting and financial mismanagement being peddled by some mischievous individuals and groups only exist in their imagination. Let them bring concrete evidence or keep silent forever.”

CNPP backs caretaker committees for Kwara councils

The Congress of Nigeria’s Political Parties (CNPP) in Kwara State has supported the state government’s decision to inaugurate caretaker committees in the 16 council areas.

A statement by the Chairman Adebayo Lawal and Secretary Prince Olufemi Adeleke, also lauded the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed-led administration for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries. It advised the government to continue to prioritise workers’ salaries.

The congress maintained that interim committee was not new in Nigeria as it is being practised in many states.

The statement reads: “This is not a new thing as it had been practised in many states which had not even conducted out local government elections in the last three to four years.”

The congress called on the government to keep up the good record as one of the states holding local government elections on schedule. “When the wherewithal is available, the local government elections should be held as soon as practicable,” the statement added.

  • CNPP seeks prayers for Buhari

The Anambra State chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged Nigerians to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration instead of criticising its shortcomings.

It said all hands must be on deck for the President to succeed.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, CNPP’s State Chairman Lolo Oby Okafor said it was not easy to lead Nigeria.

She said the country needed prayers from all religious groups to enable it reach the Promised Land.

The CNPP hailed the General Overseer of Champion Royal Assembly, Pastor Joshua Iginla, for helping the needy and the less privileged in the society.

Okafor said: “The people in this country should give President Buhari a chance to work, instead of the all unwarranted attacks. They should also know that Rome was not built in a day.

“From what is on the ground, it seems the President has a tailored agenda for the country. Therefore, everybody should pray for his success, including the pastors, Muslim leaders and other individuals.”

The CNPP chairman said Iginla had awarded scholarships to many Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic affiliation.

Okafor, who is also the Chairman of Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) in Anambra State and a Nollywood actress, said the cleric had also helped some actors and actresses.

She said: “There are men of God in this country and we believe Iginla is one of them because he does not discriminate in whatever he does.

“Most members of the Nollywood family have benefitted from him, especially those who have fallen sick one way or the other. The members are not sleeping. We will continue to appreciate him.”

Okafor, who also ACD candidate in the yet-to-be conducted Anambra Central Senatorial election, said Nollywood and CNPP would continue to support the pastor.

She added: “This is a man who has shown interest in widows, widowers and the needy in all sections of the country, even the sick. We have never experienced from anywhere somebody who can rival Iginla.”

The politician prayed God to always guide, guard and protect the cleric from danger to enable him continue his humanitarian work for the downtrodden.

  • Fuel scarcity: CNPP issues seven-day ultimatum to end queues

Fuel scarcity: CNPP issues seven-day ultimatum to end queues

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) Thursday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to end fuel queues cross the country.

CNPP warned that at the end of the ultimatum, it will mobilize the organized labour, civil society groups and the masses to occupy the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) until the minister and minister of state resign.

This was contained in a statement jointly issued in Abuja by its National Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, who was the Second Republic Governor of old Kaduna State and the Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu.

The group maintained that: “Both the Minister and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources have shown a track record of undeniable and monumental ineptitude in resolving the problems associated with Fuel Scarcity in the last 11 months.

“While the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has kept double talking on the issue, the Minister and President Muhammadu Buhari on his part has maintained relative silence.

“About seven months ago, Kachikwu had confessed: “Personally, I will have chosen to sell the refineries, but President Buhari has instructed that they should be fixed.

“After they are fixed, if they still operate below 60 per cent, then we will know what to do.’

“A 90-day presidential ultimatum for the refineries to be fixed ended in December and the deadline was not met.

“In the same vein, the government set April 7 deadline to end the fuel queues being experienced across the country, again, the deadline was not meet.

“After blaming some people who rather than sell products send them into hinterlands where they can sell at ridiculous prices to make quick returns on their investments wrongly, the Ministry few days ago blamed the scarcity on 30% of supply allegedly diverted outside Nigeria.

“The government should be reminded that it has all the security apparatus and personnel to tract the saboteurs and bring them to justice.

“Enough of all the blame games and lack of will to tell Nigerians the truth about the lingering fuel scarcity. If by the end of seven days, and the situation is not addressed, the CNPP shall have no choice but to lead the organized labour, coalition of civil society groups and the Nigerian masses to occupy NNPC until the minister and minister of state resign their positions in the Ministry,” the statement added.

  • Stop Saraki’s trial, say CNPP, IPAC

Stop Saraki’s trial, say CNPP, IPAC

The Congress of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) and Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Kwara State have joined those demanding the stoppage of the trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

They said in statements that the trial was borne out of political vendetta and not a fight against corruption as its initiators wanted the public to believe.

IPAC’s statement was signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Alhaji Adebayo Lawal and Dave Ifabiyi; while CNPP’s was signed by its Secretary, Prince Olufemi Adeleke.

IPAC statement reads: “What is happening in the political arena, as far as the Senate presidency is concerned, is nothing short of tyrannical rule.

“Any democratic dispensation that practises such is nothing short of dictatorship and nepotism.

“This is an action that any Nigerian, who values the norms of democracy, will not adopt. We should not allow the ‘man’ to die in us.

“In advanced democracies of the world where the bi-camera legislature is practised, members of the hallowed chambers reserve the right to elect whoever they want to lead them.”

It urged the CCT to toe the line of sanity and fair play.

“The Senate president should no longer be compelled to appear before the CCT since he has his team of erudite lawyers representing him.

“The charges should be reviewed to eliminate areas of witch-hunt, vilification and persecution in view of the fact that the declaration was legally logged over 10 years ago.”

The CNPP said: “We say no to the continued castigation and victimisation of the person of the Senate president on those trumped-up allegations.”

  • CNPP kicks as Fayose begins N5.7b flyover in Ado-Ekiti

CNPP kicks as Fayose begins N5.7b flyover in Ado-Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday performed the groundbreaking of a N5.7 billion flyover project in Ado-Ekiti expected to be completed in two years.

The governor gave the assurance that the 1.2 kilometre project from Fajuyi Park to Ojumose will be completed on time and will not join the list of abandoned projects.

But the state chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) condemned the execution of the project at a time government still owes workers about four months arrears of salaries and retirees five months arrears of pension.

The body doubts the capacity of the government to complete the project as scheduled expressing fear that it may turn out to be another abandoned project.

Speaking shortly before launching the flyover construction, Fayose described the project as a dream come true, saying the work would not be hindered by paucity of funds as being feared in some quarters.

He said only N1 billion came to the state from the Federation Account for March while the wage bill still stands at N2.6 billion.

Fayose promised to extend the dualisation of Ikere township road to the town’s roundabout while he would pursue the construction of an ultramodern State High Court complex before he leaves office in 2018.

He disclosed that his administration has been executing various projects, including township roads in many parts of the state, promising to touch all parts of the state.

Promising to abide by the court order stopping the airport project by paying the damages to the affected farmers and landowners, Fayose still promised “to do something” on the airport.

He urged the people of Ado Ekiti “to go on excursion to various parts of the town” and continue to publicise the projects executed by his administration.

But the CNPP after its monthly meeting yesterday described the flyover project as “ill-timed and misplacement of priority in a land afflicted by hunger, want and poverty”.

The CNPP in a statement by the Chairman Tunji Ogunlola and Director of Publicity Ayo Adelabu said although the project was a good intention but the timing is wrong “as the state economy is at lowest ebb”.

  • CNPP urges transparency in NNPC probe

CNPP urges transparency in NNPC probe

The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has urged the Federal Government to ensure transparency and probity in the on-going probe of the past financial transactions of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The CNPP in a statement by its Secretary General, Chief, Willy Ezugwu, in Abuja, Monday, said that the reforms being introduced by the Minister of State/Group Managing Director of the corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has exposed the activities of the cabals who had held the oil sector hostage.

According to the statement, Ezugwu said that the best gift the President had brought to the table in recent times was the appointment of a non-partisan professional and technocrat, Kachikwu as the minister of state GMD of the corporation.

The organization warned that it was aware of moves by some cabal to blackmail the minister and continue business as usual.

It warned that Nigerians were ready to defend the minister in his attempt to sanitize the sector.

The CNPP maintained that Nigerians now had hope in the leadership of the oil sector that had seen some positive and masses oriented reforms in the last few days and thereby warned that the upcoming probe by the government should not be politicized for any reason.

“CNPP is aware that the worst set of dangerous black marketers in the world exist within the NNPC as oil cabal and this is to sound a warning to them that Nigerians will not tolerate any unwarranted attack under any guise by these agents of darkness to either bring the corporation down or pull the government down on its people oriented leadership,” the statement read.

He said Kachukwu had proven to be interested in probity and transparency of every single Kobo that the country earns from crude oil, adding that “we would encourage him to keep his books open and allow Nigerians to face the cabal while himself and the President are allowed to concentrate.”

He urged Kachikwu to be courageous, saying he has the support of Nigerians.

  • …CNPP congratulates Wike, Umahi, Amosun

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has congratulated the four governors, whose elections were recently upheld by the Supreme Court,  describing the development as another milestone in the strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.

CNPP described the affirmation of the elections of Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Ibikunle Amosun of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, as a confirmation that the judiciary is playing its role as the arbiter in the nation’s democracy.

A statement issued by CNPP Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa said: “all parties to the litigations that led the rulings should now team up for the development of their respective states since their contest for public office was to serve the people in the first place.

“CNPP will continue to demand for improvement to the electoral process to ensure that those who win elections are able to concentrate on governance instead of spending several months or even years distracted in courts.”

The statement disclosed that CNPP is keenly watching to see how the Supreme Court will rule on other pending governorship elections petitions before it as it will not accept anything that goes contrary to the will of the people.
