Coconut oil: Cure hope for glaucoma, dementia, alzheimer’s?

Coconut Oil is back in the news as a brain miracle worker. This time, medical doctor Mrs. Mary Newport says it is curing her husband’s Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive death of brain cells which causes memory loss and disables other important mental functions. A few years ago, American film maker Joe Loveth whose vision was almost crippled by glaucoma-causing blindness bounced back to 2020 vision, he says, on a coconut oil food supplement and went on to write three books to drive home his point. A report of his experiences was published in this column on  September 21, 2023, as a reprint of the first publication about two years earlier. Both publications were titled: Does Coconut Oil Offer Promise of Glaucoma Cure? and posted in Facebook at John Olufemi Kusa.

Hitherto, coconut oil had been winning acclaims for brain cancer cures and for arresting opportunistic intestinal diseases in HIV conditions.

Joe Loveth’s recovery from glaucoma had the hallmarks of a paradigm shift in opthalmology. Hitherto, it was assumed that increases in occular tension cause damage to the optic nerve and may cause glaucoma-related blindness. Joe Loveth says, however, that the reverse is the case, that glaucoma begins with damage to brain cells which control the optic nerve and that optic nerve manifestations of the disease are merely imprints from damaged brain cells. His hypothesis is that these brain cells were damaged and dying because the brain did not produce enough neurotrophic factors to feed and to protect them. The brain can be rescued from this problem, he argues, with the consumption of coconut oil in the daily diet.

Dr. Mary Newport links Alzheimer’s to the same scenario, but pegs the disease on brain starvation of glucose, and not neurotrophic factors as does Joe Loveth. She and Joe Loveth appear to be walking on the same side of a road, nevertheless. Joe Loveth had said his research of the subject suggested to him that glaucoma patients were likely to later develop Alzheimer’s and dementia, and that Alzheimer’s and dementia-challenged persons were also likely to develop glaucoma. Thus, it would seem the three diseases are interconnected and, as Dr. Newport is suggesting, a “diabetes of the brain” is the string which holds them together. Incidentally, her husband, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, also suffered from vision challenges. Does this validate Joe Loveth’s hypothesis? Dr Mary Newport’s hypothesis is that certain conditions make it difficult, if not impossible, for brain cells to take up blood sugar for their living processes. Yet, glucose is the main food of the brain. It, therefore, sounds logical that hungry and dying brain cells would not be able to maintain acuity in whichever part of the body they control or whatever functions they perform in the body. However, as Dr Newport says, when a person challenged with “diabetes of the brain” consumes coconut oil in the diet, the triglycerides in the oil are converted by the liver to Ketones which the brain cells can easily absorb and use for fuel in place of blood sugar, thereby keeping at Bay glaucoma, Alzheimer’s and dementia. The trouble with that, though, is that ketone fuel, like fuel from other fats, is not clean fuel like glucose fuel. It leaves behind many toxic wastes which must be constantly removed with anti oxidants, lest the sludges and their  toxins create new problems.

What Dr. Mary Newport is saying is suggesting to me that chromium picolinate may be included in the nutritional therapy of glaucoma, Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. Many persons who suffer from type II diabetes have been found to be deficient not only in minerals such as magnesium and zinc but especially, also, in chromium picolinate. Many of them may have subsisted on chromium-deficient diet for many years. Chromium is what nature placed in carbohydrate foods to make the sugar in them after digestion to easily cross from the blood stream into the cells of every tissue and organ, in the company of Insulin. Insulin on its own cannot get blood sugar into the cell. Insulin can get blood sugar into the cell when Chromium accompanies both of them. When chromium is not present in the company of insulin and blood sugar, the cells are said to develop insulin resistance. This means they shut their doors and windows, literally speaking, against insulin and with this action, insulin and blood sugar stay behind in the blood stream, causing type II diabetes. However, in its clever by half attitude in everything given to him on a platter of gold in the Creation Diet by Nature, mankind through food technology has removed chromium from several carbohydrate foods, thereby predisposing the consumer to blood sugar problems. White rice has lost between 96 to 98 per cent of its chromium content. It is doubtful if white flour foods such as bread, pasta, meat pies, doughnuts, puff puff, buns etc have any chromium left in them. When eating over many years, it may not be surprising if these foods are among the culprits behind diabetes. If their consumption is behind inability of brain cells to absorb blood sugar, because they are resisting insulin and blood sugar in the absence of chromium in their company, only future studies may be able to confirm. Already, however, Dr Mary Newport is suggesting that that is what is happening.

The story of Dr Mary Newport and her husband is making the rounds all over the world to encourage the consumption of coconut oil in the diet by persons challenged by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. I received the information from Mr Oluwayemisi John who received it from Mrs Grace Adu. Both are naturalists and live in Abeokuta. Mr John retired as safety manager for Total Oil in Nigeria. Mrs Adu, widow of Mr Jab Adu, of the television series called Village Headmaster used to make Plantain Root Juice (PRT) for prostate gland problems. I can confirm that she also used to make the finest grade of soya bean milk I have ever tasted. The story of Dr Mary Newport and her husband, as forwarded in social media, appears below…

    The Steve Newport’s  story

In the United States, an estimated 5.4 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This figure is growing rapidly with the aging population. One of them was Steve Newport. His wife, Mary Newport, was a doctor. Dr. Mary learned that her husband had severe Alzheimer’s disease. When the doctor examined her husband at the hospital, he asked Steve to paint a clock. Instead, he drew a few circles and then drew a few figures without any logic. It was not like a clock at all!. The doctor pulled her aside and said: ‘’Your husband is already on the verge of severe Alzheimer’s disease!”

It turned out that it was a test of whether a person had Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Mary was very upset at that time, but as a doctor, she would not just give up. She began to study the disease. She found out Alzheimers disease was associated with glucose deficiency to the brain.

Her research says: “The dementia of the elderly is like having diabetes in the head! Before one has the symptoms of diabetes or Alzheimer’s disease, the body has already had problems for 10 to 20 years.”

According to the study of Dr. Mary Newport, Alzheimer’s disease is very similar to Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. The cause is also insulin imbalance.

It suggests that, because insulin has a problem, it prevents the brain cells from absorbing glucose. Glucose is the nutrition of brain cells. Without glucose, brain cells die.

As it turns out, these high-quality proteins are the cells that feed our body. But nutrition for our brain cell is glucose. As long as we have mastered the source of these two kinds of food, we are the masters of our own health!

The next question is, where to find glucose? It can not be the ready-made glucose that we buy from the store. It is not from fruits such as grapes. She started looking for alternatives.

The alternative nutrients for brain cells are ketones. Ketones are necessary in brain cells. Ketones can not be found in vitamins. Coconut oil contains triglicerides. After the triglycerides in coconut oil are consumed, it is metabolised into ketones in the liver. This is the alternative nutrient for brain cells!

After this scientific verification, Dr. Mary added coconut oil to her husband’s food. After only two weeks, when he went to the hospital again to do painting and clock tests, the progress was amazing.

Dr. Mary said: “At that time, I thought, has God heard my prayers? Wouldn’t it be coconut oil that worked? But there is no other way. Anyway, it’s better to continue taking the coconut oil.

Dr. Mary was now part of the traditional medical practice base. She clearly knew the capabilities of traditional medicine.

Three weeks later, the third time she took him to do a smart clock test, the performance was better than the last time. This progress was not only intellectual but also emotional and physical.

Dr. Mary said: “He could not do his running, but now he can run. He could not read for a year and a half, but he can read again now after taking coconut oil for three months.”

Her husband’s actions had already begun to change. He did not speak in the mornings. Now she noticed a lot of changes: “Now after he gets up, he is spirited, talking and laughing. He drinks water himself and takes utensils for himself on his own.”

On the surface, these are very simple daily tasks, but only those who have come to the clinic or have demented relatives at home can experience the joy: It is not easy to see such progress!

After frying the greens & onions in coconut oil, making cakes with coconut, after taking 3 to 4 tablespoons of coconut oil per meal, 2-3 months later, the eyes too can now focus normally.

Her studies proved that coconut oil can really improve the problem of dementia in the elderly.

Apply coconut oil to bread. When coconut cream is used, the taste is unexpectedly good. Young people can also use it for maintenance of health and prevention and can improve if they have symptoms of dementia.

Dementia is caused because nutrients can not be transported to brain cells, and nutrients must be passed from the body to the brain by insulin. “Especially for diabetic patients, it’s not easy to get insulin secretion. Nutrition can not get to the brain. When brain cells are starved to death, they are deprived of intelligence.”Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglyceride, which can supply nutrients to the brain without using insulin.

So, it can improve Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease

     Ketones

The stories of Joe Loveth and Mary Newport may trigger interest in coconut oil for dietary therapies of brain challenges such as glaucoma, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, raise demand and spur price hikes. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s coconut plants are old and, with no notable coconut plantations, Ghana has been providing a substantial stock of Nigeria’s coconut and coconut oil supplies.

Coconut oil faddists may wish to learn a few things about Ketones, what they do in the body and possible problems, an excess of them may cause. Cleaveland clinic in www.mycleavelandclinic.org informs us…

    “What are ketones?

Ketones, or ketone bodies, are acids your body makes when it’s using fat instead of glucose for energy. Your body gets most of its energy from glucose, a sugar that mainly comes from carbohydrates in your diet. If you don’t get enough energy from glucose, your body breaks down fats for energy instead. The breakdown releases ketones that travel through your bloodstream. The ketones fuel your body’s tissues and eventually exit in your urine (pee).

It’s normal (and safe) to have some ketones in your blood because it’s normal for your body to use its backup energy source — fats — when there’s not enough usable glucose.

But too many ketones can make your blood acidic and toxic. This is called ketoacidosis. If you have diabetes, too many ketones can cause diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is life-threatening without treatment.

“What do ketones do in your body?

Ketones fuel your brain and body in the absence of glucose, your body’s primary energy source. Think of ketones as your backup energy reserve when the main source is depleted, low or unusable.

Typically, your body breaks down food into glucose. A hormone called insulin helps your cells use glucose as an energy source or store it for when you need it later.

Your body will switch to ketosis if you’re not getting enough carbohydrates. During ketosis, your body breaks down fats for energy, releasing ketones. The ketones energise cells and tissue so your body can keep working. Ketosis is a normal process. For example, your body can go into ketosis (and make more ketones) when:

    You’re asleep.

    You’re fasting.

    You’re exercising.

It causes major changes to your body and isn’t for everyone. Also, the keto diet is very restrictive, so it can be difficult to stick to for extended periods of time.

    Anatomy

    Where are ketones located?

Ketosis occurs in your liver. Your liver releases the ketones into your bloodstream, where they travel throughout your body, providing energy. Once they’ve done their job, you pee them out.

    Conditions and disorders

What are the common conditions and disorders associated with ketones?

Understanding what ketones do and keeping track of ketone levels is especially important if you have diabetes — Type 1 diabetes, in particular. Type 1 diabetes is a condition that prevents your body from making insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps your body use glucose for energy.

“Problems with insulin cause your blood sugar levels to rise (hyperglycemia) and can cause too many ketones to build up in your blood. This can lead to diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is more common in people with Type 1 diabetes but can happen with Type 2 diabetes, too

“What are the symptoms of high ketones?

Without treatment, DKA can progress fast (within 24 hours or even less). Symptoms include:

    Nausea and vomiting.

Fatigue (feeling tired and weak even with rest).

    Stomach pain.

    Shortness of breath.

    Confusion.

Fruity-smelling breath (sometimes called “keto breath”).”

    Conclusion

Joe Loveth tells us dietary coconut oil helped his brain to produce more neurotrophic factors (NTFs) than he did when he did not take coconut oil and he developed glaucoma in both eyes. NTFs are families of some protein molecules which help the development, growth and survival of neurons in the brain. A neuron is a fundamental unit of brain cells or the nervous system in the brain. Joe Loveth says neurons in a special area of the brain controls the optic nerve which brings light impressions from the eye to the brain. He believes that when the neurons do not have enough NTFs to support their growth, development and protection, and begin to wilt or to die, their travails are reflected throughout the optic nerve and appear as the symptoms called glaucoma.

Dr. Mary Newport comes from another pathway. She says Alzheimer’s and dementia occur when nutrients, especially blood glucose, cannot be transported into brain cells because of insulin resistance or insulin deficiency, features of both types of diabetes. That is why she termed those conditions “diabetes of the brain”. She says the ketones generated by the liver from coconut oil provided the brain cells with an alternative fuel to blood glucose, and, perhaps, other nutrients.

The frontiers of medicine, like other frontiers of knowledge are ever expanding.

So, it should not be out of place to assume that, in the future, opthalmologists and neurologists will recognise these conceptions, properly scrutinise them and probably make out something good from them to the benefit of everyone troubled by mental health problems, including depression.

Once again, thank you Joe Loveth and grateful thanks, also, to Mary Newport. What I found intriguing about her is that, in her clinical practice, she may have definitively told some of her patients that their health troubles were irreversible. However, when her husband came down, she threw away the rigidity of orthodox medicine and went to mother nature for a cure which she found. We are probably being taught a lesson here that there is no disease without a solution, that if a solution to a disease is still elusive, it must mean that physicians still do not have a full grasp of it to be able to overcome it.

  • Coconut oil production

Coconut oil, also known as copra oil, is suitable in medical and other domestic purposes.

As a result of its high content of oily-milk, it is slow to oxidize and it is resistant to rancidification, which has the shelf life of two years and beyond when properly processed into oil.

    Extraction process:

Coconut oil production is done in two ways:

    1. Dry method – This process requires.
    2. Wet method.

Dry processing – This method involves drying of the extracted meat by means of firing or kilns to generate copra, which is crushed and pressed to generate the coconut oil.

Wet process – This method is widely practice in homes by house wives. The coconut meat is crushed, washed with water to collect milky liquid, which is further boiled or heated to a certain temperature, after which, it is allowed to cool down and the oil would be collected by means of de-counting or by the use of oil extractor.

    Potentials

It is generally use for the treatment of several ailments, such as cough, neutralizing food poison, used in production of body and hair cream amongst other medical and pharmaceutical applications.

    Availability

Coconut is readily available and very cheap in Nigeria, especially in the coastal areas. It is found in commercial quantity in over six states of the country.

    Process Description:

Cleaning: remove shell and brown skin and washing by machines

Drying:  putting clean coconut meat to chain tunnel dryer

Crushing:  making dry coconut meat to suitable small pieces

Pre-press: Press the cakes to leave oil 16%-18% in the cake. The cake will go to extraction process

Filtration: filtrating the oil more clearly then pump it to the oil tank

    Packaging:

At this point, the produced coconut oil is bottled and packaged neatly in cartons, with branded name and trade mark, that makes your product outstanding from the ones in the market, thereafter; it is ready to be marketed.

    Cost implication:

The cost of investment depends on the capacity of the factory or plant you wish to install. As little as from N100, 000 to as much as N50M could be invested in the business.

    Profitability:

It is highly lucrative, as more and more persons are becoming aware of the innumerable use of the product.

Note: Pre-treatment and prepressing section is a very important before extraction, as it will directly affect extraction and affect and oil quality.

Worried about dark lips? Try these natural solutions

    By Moses Emorinken

There is nothing quite as depressing as trying so hard to reverse the dark colouration of your lips, and getting little or no result.

A lot of us when we were yay high had great lip colour and texture; however, as we grew up and made unhealthy dietary and lifestyle choices, we gradually experienced a depletion of the aesthetics of our lips from pink to dark (black).

A naturally rosy lip is an appealing feature of a woman’s beauty or a man’s charm. Therefore, people who have a dark lip desire to lighten them. Quite frankly, a dark lip can sometimes tarnish our personal image and can cause embarrassment.

Statistics reveal that one of the body parts that make a first and lasting impression for any individual is their lips. Please for a moment, try not to get your imagination encumbered with the overt and obvious body features in front and back (for a woman).

Sometimes a darker lip is genetically inherited and is commonly found in dark complexioned people.

Howbeit, a few of the major causes of dark lips are high caffeine intake, excessive exposure to direct sunlight (Ultra Violet Ray), use of low-quality cosmetics, allergic reaction, chewing tobacco, excessive smoking, hormonal imbalances and age.

The lip doesn’t just aid in our speaking and oral communication, but also enhances our overall beauty and persona.

Chances are that if you possess a beautiful, colourful and sometimes full lip, you subconsciously absorb to yourself the emotions of affection and sensuality from whoever you encounter.

Recently, there have been an alarming spread and sales of creams and mixtures that claim to have the perfect alchemy to transform black lips into pink.

A lot of people, especially between the ages of 14 to 35 form the vast majority of those who patronise such enterprises in search for a “pink” solution.

The obviously annoying pink colours of the lips of those that have used these mostly unlicensed and unapproved street creams have further accentuated their unoriginality and artificiality.

There is nothing as good as developing or restoring your lip to desirable colour tone naturally from homemade and relatively available organic products.

There are a lot of ways to lighten your dark lips that does not require you spending heavy on products or treatments. Natural remedies can effectively lighten your lips. However, the time it takes for these remedies to work varies, so use them as long as needed to achieve the results you want.

How to Avoid Lips from Getting Dark?

    1. Do not smoke as it causes the darkening of your lip.
    2. Limit the consumption of coffee.
    3. Don’t suck your lip.
    4. Wear a lip balm with good SPF whenever you go out.
    5. Moisturise your lips and keep them hydrated.
    6. Keep your diet healthy and nutritious.

  • A claim of coconut oil cure for cancer

We live in a world of edible oils. Mr Lade Bonuola (a.k.a LADBONE) told me many times he knew of palm oil as an edible oil only when he came from his home town, Kishi, for his Higher School Certificate Education (HSC) at Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, in Southwestern Nigeria. Kishi is an agrarian town in the north of Southwestern Nigeria. In Kishi of the 1960s, shea butter was the staple cooking oil. Mr Bonuola said he saw a palm kernel tree for the first time in the South of Southwestern Nigeria. When he speaks with the nostalgia and love for a meal cooked with Shea butter, you are likely to screw your face in embarrassment if you are one of those people Nigerians call omo a je butter or butty or omo get-inside. These expressions describe in various ways the Anglicised, Europeanised or Americanised Nigerian who is detached from the ways of his or progenital root.

I am not a Butty. But I do not think I can enjoy a meal of jollof rice cooked with shea butter oil. Maybe this is because I have been used to palm kernel oil and to peanut (groundnut) oil for more than 60 years. Maybe I recoil simply because of nutritional miseducation that, like coconut oil and palm kernel oil, shea butter oil is dangerous for health.

I am better educated about edible oils today, having read such books as ANOINT YOURSELF WITH OIL and Dr. Udo Erasmus’s FATS THAT HEAL and FATS THAT KILL. We must thank Dr. Erasmus for this great book. It is somewhat a documentation of his several research efforts which “unified the fat theory”. Unification of the fat theory presupposes that, before him, the fat theory was a motley crowd of disparate thinking. The dominant theory or thinking until Dr. Erasmus came on the scene was that fats which solidifies at room temperature, like shea butter oil, were dangerous fats because they contained plenty of the easily oxidisable Lower Density Lipoprotein (LDL) a fraction of cholesterol.

Palm oil and Coconut oil, which may become semi-solid or solid, especially if kept in the refrigerator, came under nutritional “badmouthing” by nutritionists and researchers in Western countries.

In the West at that time heart disease, heart attack and stroke were major killers, and these deaths were linked to cholesterol blockage or damage of the arteries and other blood vessels.

So, many people fled from oils, touching them with only long spoons as it were. But it was soon discovered that this did not  stop or reduce the rate of heart and vascular (blood vessel) disease, heart attacks or strokes, and that, in many cases, the victims were the people who abstained from fats and oils.

Dr. Erasmus’s mission was probably to remind us that there is a reason Mother Nature provides us with fats and oil. If you press the tip of your nose, you would find oil. If you check your skin, there is oil in it. The brain is fatty. The eyes have oil. The heart uses oils for energy. The testes and the ovaries and the breasts have oil. If we avoid oil in the diet, how will these organs obtain the oils which are their constituents and maintain them. If we situate this thought in the context that a lion eats mostly the oil-rich organs of its game, we may come closer to an understanding of the importance of oil in our lives and health. I am humbled the more in this line of thinking when I remember that petrol, which drives our civilisation, is nothing but the oils from the leaves and trees and other vegetation which leached into the soil probably millions of years ago!

Dr. Erasmus found that these are good oils maintain our bodies and heal diseases. He found, too, that there are bad oils which  damage health and kill.

Based on this new thinking, I wondered why the people of Kishi had not all died because they eat shea butter, if this oil was bad, as we were informed pre-1960s. I wondered as well why I am still alive, because I eat Palm kernel oil. I remember, also, that my friends who eat Banga soup, made from palm kernel oil, are all alive and doing reasonably well. What of Coconut oil? Why have the people of Badagry not all died, because Coconut oil is their own palm oil?

The story has turned out to be that farmers in the United States produced lots of Soya bean oil which they wanted to unload on the world market. Canadian farmers too wished to sell Canola oil. And since these oils could be unloaded on African and Caribbean populations, the traditional cooking oils of these people had, first, to be taken away from them and replaced with soy oil and Canola oil. This was the basis of sponsored studies which, thankfully, Dr. Erasmus’s independent investigations have now dislodged, despite the power of advertising which propelled them. The Caribbean people, too, have come of age, and done their own studies, which shows that their staple cooking oil, coconut oil, is one of the world’s best and safest for health.

Is it not surprising and shocking as well today that coconut oil is one of the fastest selling oils in the United States? Not only is it used as an edible oil, it has found uses in cosmetics and in medicine. Medicinally, it has found an important place in Alternative Medicine protocols for weight control, digestion, HIV therapy, and, lately cancer management and cures.

It is to provide evidence for these suggestions that the following article which I received on my chat-group platform, is produced below. It is the experience of one woman who was knocked down by a cancer which responded to no hospital protocol but who eventually became cured on a coconut oil therapy… she writes:

“I’m positive that the testimonial below will be a blessing to someone fighting cancer somewhere. Please spread the word, will you.

    COCONUT OIL CURES CANCER

    Posted on June 1, 2015

    Julie Figueroa – Maryland, Ohio

“In 1998, I was running a computer company in New York. I also had an Internet company in the Philippines and was in charge of a very exciting Internet trade show in Asia (Internet World).  I was very busy and enjoying work but always made sure I got my yearly executive check up, including my yearly mammogram.

“In February of 1998 I got a clean bill of health. A few months later I began feeling a strange sensation in my breast. Late October it developed into a sharp pain. I went to the doctor and was immediately referred to an oncologist for testing. I was told I had a very aggressive form of breast cancer and needed surgery immediately. This came as a shock to me. I began to wonder why? There was no history of cancer in my family. Was it the toxic waste in New Jersey where I had lived for the past 10 years? Was I stressed at work and did not know it? I thought there had to be a reason people get cancer. Before going through with a mastectomy, I wanted a second opinion.

“I went to a different specialist but he told me the same thing. I kept trying to find a doctor that would tell me that all I needed was a lumpectomy or just chemotherapy. Finally, the fifth doctor told it to me straight, “You don’t have a choice. We don’t even know if we can still save you. You are at stage 4, the most serious stage, we need to do the surgery immediately.”

“Here I was, in February cancer free, now just eight months later I was knocking on death’s door with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. I went through with the operation and afterwards several months of chemotherapy. While doctors said that the cancer was under control, it wasn’t completely gone. So they kept me on medication. I decided to go back to the Philippines for a visit. I owned a farm there that I loved and had always wanted to grow medicinal plants. The farm was filled with coconut trees, which were harvested for the copra. I thought about planting coffee under the coconut trees and start an herbal medicine garden.

“Then in 2001, I began to experience painful headaches. They became so severe that it felt like the bones in my skull were being fractured. I walked into my doctor’s office and told him I wanted an X-ray of my skull. “Were you in an accident?” he questioned. “No,” I said, “I just feel that I have some kind of fracture. He smiled, “How do you know you have a fracture? Maybe a strong pain killer will solve your problem.” “I know what a fracture feels like.” I said, “I’ve had several bones broken in the past and I know what it feels like.” He didn’t argue any further and I had an X-ray taken. I went back the next day to see my doctor and instead, met with seven other doctors. They had never seen the type of skull cancer I had. Almost half my skull looks like cheese that had been eaten by rats. I was in shock. I asked them what were my chances for survival? They said, “In the Philippines, at your stage … none.” I probably had two months.

“I took the next flight to the United States. I went to see my doctor the afternoon I arrived. The doctors in Manila had already faxed and spoken to him about my condition. The next day I visited with my neurosurgeon. We discussed my condition and scheduled a craniotomy. My prognosis was poor. He ordered an MRI, CT scans, bone scans, blood work, etc. This was the same cancer that had so aggressively attacked me before. It had now spread up into my skull. Surgery was scheduled for the morning after. The cancer was hairline close to the main artery in my brain. The bad news was that he could not take it all out; 20 per cent of it was at the back of my skull in the center over the main artery. Chemotherapy had not been successful after breast surgery so there was little hope it would be of any use now. But, at this point, it was the only hope I had. My chances for survival were grim. I knew I’d better make the most of the time I had remaining.

“After several months of recovery from the surgery, I went back to my farm in Philippines to visit my family. I was really weak and would just sit on the hill watching the farmers work among the coconut trees planting coffee seedlings. I knew I had to do something to strengthen my immune system. I wanted to plant an herb garden. I started doing research on what medicinal plants I should grow that would boost my immune system. I thought about planting ginseng or bitter melons. I even considered growing a shrub from the Amazon.

“Just about that time, I came across some research on coconut oil. I read about clinical trials for AIDS in the Philippines using coconut oil. I figured if coconut oil can boost the immune system and cure AIDS, it might work for my cancer. I started taking three to four tablespoons of oil a day plus whatever I used in preparing my meals. I would add it to my oatmeal in the morning, put it in my hot chocolate, cook my meals in it. I also snacked on fresh coconut and drank coconut juice.

“By July my doctors started to worry. I had been gone for nearly six months. They needed to monitor the cancer that was still in my skull. So, I flew back to the US. To their complete surprise I had gone into remission. They asked me what I had done. I told them I found a cure-virgin coconut oil. Today, I continue to use coconut oil and I am cancer free! I had grown up around coconut trees in the Philippines. My grandmother used to make coconut oil from fresh coconuts just as many of the farmers did. I never used it because we were told it was a saturated fat. We were healthy. Conscious so we used hydrogenated soybean oil and corn oil. I had coconut oil around me all my life. It took getting cancer and a desperate search for a cure that made me rediscover this miracle oil.

“Don’t forget to share this. It will save someone from untimely death.

It takes nothing to add coconut oil to your diet today. I wish to experiment with cooking my beans and my rice not with coconut oil but with the coconut itself. I would grate the coconut and add the chaff to the food in the pot on the stove. I believe this will bring a lot of coconut oil into the food and provide me with coconut fibre for digestion and make me constipation free. Ulcer patients may not try this. For the grazing of the fibre on their injury may worsen ulcer wound and pain. But they may profit from one tablespoonful of the oil taken just before a meal and another added to the meal. We must thank our coconut industry in Nigeria, especially all the young people who are struggling to keep coconut and coconut oil culture alive in our memory. Many people are now making coconut oil and coconut product for sale. The buyers complain that this product are expensive and wonder why the cost is up when the coconut tree grows in Nigeria and their is not much American dollar input, if any, in production. These critics do not know that most of Nigeria’s coconut trees are older than they are and that, despite increasing demand, coconut plan are not being planted in enough quantum to keep pace. The sad news is that we  import coconut from Ghana to bridge the gap. In this regard, we are like a stupid, foolish, and cursed nation. Last week on Facebook I suggested that the Minister of Agriculture should be one of the Ministers President Muhammadu Buhari should politely ask to go if, as speculated in the media, he plans a cabinet reshuffle. How can we have a Minister of Agriculture who is a farmer, saying nothing to the nation as the price of palm oil rockets to N1,000 per liter while petrol is N145 per litre at the pump. What we expect from him is a master plan to reverse Nigeria’s ineptitude in his own sub-sector within the tenure of this Administration. The change we expected from this administration is the change in the way we think and do things. Malaysians change their way of thinking about agriculture when they came to Nigeria to buy palm kernel seedlings. We even gave them agricultural officers who taught them how to farm palm kernel in plantations. Today, Malaysia is one of the biggest palm oil exporters in the world. Today, Nigeria, a former leading palm oil exporter in the world, must import palm oil to have peace on the dinning table. Why can we, for example, not start today a 10-kilometre square palm kernel plantation which will create jobs for farmers, transporters, security and medical personnel and recreational people in a new forest habitat?  Can we not do the same for coconut trees has they have done in the Caribbean, to become one of the biggest coconut oil producers in the world?

Meanwhile, let us once again enjoy the good old coconut and coconut oil.

You can use it as makeup remover, for shaving, as hair cream, etc. The fatty acids in coconut oil also reduce inflammation internally and externally and moisturise, making them a great solution for all types of skin conditions. Moisturising, antiaging and antiviral properties

Coconut oil is a powerful moisturiser that is beneficial to restoring dry or flaking skin.
