  • Fight that cold with spices

THE rainy season is here again. It brings dampness, which makes infections to spread faster. Cold, catarrh, flu, cough sore throat, malaria, cholera, diarrhea and fever are common in this season.

How do you shield yourself against such diseases? There are some spices that cure the diseases. They contain medicinal properties, which can prevent  these diseases.

According to a food coach and  Seaduck Nigeria Limited Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Sam Ayeni, it is the season people mostly fall ill. He explained that this was mainly due to the increase in germs, such as monsoon.

“The humid climate increases their content in the air and water and contaminates our food, which when we consume affects our health. So, it is essential to keep a check on what we eat during the rainy season so that we don’t attract an unwanted health hazard,” he said.

Ayeni said eating the right food and maintaining proper hygiene are vital during the season. Besides, one should keep warm all day.

Ayeni said roots, spices, leaves, cloves, seeds, and seasonings have anti-bacterial properties that improve oxygen levels in the blood and help fight diseases, such as cold and cough during the wet season.

He cited the spices to include: Pepper, e.g cayenne, Uda – also known as negro pepper, black pepper, bell pepper. Roots (they are mostly grinded) and shrubs include onion, ginger, turmeric, and garlic. Examples of leaves are- scent leaf, bitter leaf. Cloves are Kanafuru – also known as cloves, seeds include peanuts, and Uziza seeds – also known as pieper guinesse.

Ayeni explained: ‘’Uziza seeds are  hot spicies and slightly bitter seeds, which are mostly ground into a fine powder and used to flavour soups and stews such as pepper soup and groundnut soup. It is also a fantastic substitute for recipes that call for black pepper. As with black pepper, you only need a little, otherwise it will become overpowering and bitter.

Pepper is a spice to prevent colds. Pepper has expectorant properties. It can break down the mucous and clear the respiratory system. Pepper can reduce nasal congestion, sinusitis, cough and cold. It can be made into fish or beef stew.

Turmeric is a spice that contains anti-inflammatory agents. It boosts immunity and prevents monsoon-related diseases. Drink turmeric milk at least once daily during the season. Half spoon of turmeric, a spoon of honey together with a glass of milk efficiently work in preventing fever, cold and flu. Moreover, the antiseptic properties of turmeric enhance the quality of food we take in monsoon.

Ginger has gingerol, which has a healing effect. It is anti-inflammatory in nature. It can cure sore throat and can curb viral infections like cold. Ginger improves immunity and enhances digestion. It further boosts your metabolism.A cup of ginger tea with a spoon of honey and lemon juice helps to fight infections like flu, cough and cold during monsoon. Ginger tea is a mood enhancer too.

Garlic is a super spice. It can clear lungs and reduce cough too. It also contains antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal agents too. The allicin present in it is a powerful medicinal compound.

Cinnamon can cure sore throat, cough and even cold that is common during the rainy season. It also helps in keeping your body warm. It is loaded with anti-bacterial agents that can reduce the irritation in your throat.

Cloves: Clove is used for enhancing the flavour of the food, but it has medicinal values too. Cloves help in improving digestion and metabolism which is vital during monsoon. Indigestion leads to problems, like stomachaches, diarrhea, constipation, to name a few. This little spice can boost the immune system and helps prevent diseases.

“To enjoy a delightful wet season, include the above listed of spices in your diet and stay healthy and active. These spices will boost the immune system and prevent any host disease from entering the body, wreaking havoc,” Ayeni added.

  • Welcome ma: Our food is cold and our drinks are warm (… and more)

Unless you are a Senator or House of Rep member, when you are leaving your house in the morning, you turn off your generator and run it again when you or yours are in the house.

If you are like me and like cooking your own food, then this is also your pain. Because after a long day, you would be faced with just 2 options – eat what is at home or go out for dinner. It’s always too tiring or too late to start cooking.

So off you go to ‘Naija Restaurant’ and this is where you get to meet the following: Starting with your drink, even bottled water, will not be cold. Sure, it would have been in the fridge, but even yours at home with the generator off will be colder than the drinks you would be served.

After a short wait, your dinner will be served.. Wait for it, barely warm!! Ah ah – this food is cold, you wonder. Remembering the one you were to cook – would you have been better off nibbling the cold uncooked vegetable, chewing the raw carrots you left at home, than this cold food.

Sorry Madam – There Was No Light…’ Yea right!…

    GHOSTS

In Calabar where I live, the Civil Servants had to undergo a rigorous screening exercise on March 1st before having their salaries paid.

There was a great deal of grumbling and complaining, but whose fault is it really? Their grouse was that a whole Deputy Governor had carried out the last verification exercise. But I say that even if the Governor himself had done the exercise, it still would not have been clean – no thanks to criminal elements in the midst.

If a State Governor who came in from somewhere else in this new cycle knows that there are ghost workers in the civil service, then how much more those who are in the civil service itself ?

Surely they know not only that, they must also know the department(s) responsible, I even guess they do know some of the individuals carrying out the nefarious acts.

‘Noo, it is not my business – oh,’ they say. ‘As far as I get my OWN SALARY,’ that is the mentality of the average civil servant.

Well, that punishing verification exercise they go through frequently is simply the price they must pay for keeping silent in the face of criminal activities in the State and even the federal civil service. And as long as they continue to discover and save many millions as payment for ghost workers, then so long will the screening/verification exercise continue until hopefully the last loophole for the existence of ghost workers is finally plugged. And the same goes for any other state across the federation.

    PONZI

Was there recession when the NOSPECO Oil scheme or what-was-it-called was on? Nigeria had what I call her SECOND OIL BOOM, but people would not invest in agriculture or any other form of production – it all went to buying and selling (of products from China) OR … any ponzi-like scheme.

Ask the CEO of the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone authority why he insists on the use of three (3) names EVERYTIME. It is because he has a terrible dread of being confused with the infamous Umana Umana of those wonderbank-like institutions.

The same Nigerians poured in funds into the MMM, expecting high returns not tenable anywhere else.

The lure of free money and the joy of getting money not worked for, like another source of National cake is what drive Nigerians to these Ponzi and wonder investments.

The failure of these finance houses is alarming, but that has not stopped people!

Imagine one who ought to be a responsible individual such that their parents give them their tuition fees for them to pay, rather than remit directly to the school.

Today, they are lamenting in the papers how they “invested” their tuition fees, book fees and all fees pertaining to their education into the last ponzi scheme.

It’s the manifestation of the greedy mindset they have. They do not see their education as an investment, and thus would not sow into it; they instead see the expected high cash returns on their ponzi schemes as the real investment.

I am told of a man who got some reward for his first round of money placement.

He was so “thrilled”, he went to the bank and withdrew all his money, all his wife’s money, and even obtained some money from his elder brother!

Today he is still waiting. He is expecting them to come back.

The ponzi schemers on the other hand say they are still uploading and Nigerians are waiting for it to index to probably ten thousand naira to get 1 million. But we are in March now and there is still no sign of Sir Ponzi. We continue waiting…

The Yorubas say: “Olorun mu e!”

    HOWAD @ 122  – Cheers!

HOWAD – The Hope Waddell Training institution turned One Hundred and Twenty-Two (122) this week! And no less a personality than the Duke of Kent  came in person from the U.K to mark the epoch-making anniversary.

Hope Waddell at 122 is the second oldest secondary institution in the whole of the federation. Named after Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell, what is less publicized is the fact that it was the Scottish Missionary Mary Slessor who was the driving force behind the establishment of Howad.

It has produced many illustrious sons who have made the school and the country proud. Back in the olden days, people from the western states in Nigeria and the coastal states in West Africa made it their first choice to send their children to school in Hope Waddell and when those ones grew and had their own families, they also sent their sons to their alma mater. The school can refer today to a man called Obo Effanga of Premium Times; he is a third generation Old Boy, after his grandfather and father-who also taught there as well. But long before, people like Bayo Rotimi and Adeniran Ogunsanya attended Hope Waddell. Torch Taire, the husband of a former Lagos Deputy Governor Mrs. Adefemi Taire attended Howad. From Cameroun the former Secretary-General of the OAU (now AU) Nzo Ekangaki went to Howad. Howad students then came from across Ghana, Sierra Leone today‘s Benin Republic and Liberia to attend the school. Nigeria‘s Premier President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe was a product of Howad,

My uncle Albert Attah, a pioneer member of the Punch team and one of those who made the newspaper then, went to Howad. I am walking in his shoes now, with this column! My cousin Bruce Attah who was formerly with Yahoo in London also went to Howad.

As the distinguished Old Boys gather in Uyo this weekend for their special anniversary AGM under their national president and medical elder Dr Usen Uwa, this is wishing 122 cheers to the great institution. I also acknowledge the efforts of the high achieving Mr Donald Duke, former Cross River Governor in facilitating the visit of the Special Guest of Honour the Duke of Kent at the anniversary celebration.

  • Cold world

It is a cold world in here. I have been here for about two weeks and I am not finding it funny. It is still strange to me. Very strange. Me, Barrister Ken Atsuwete, the conscience of the masses, lying useless in this cold place called morgue.

Those who killed me think they have eliminated a major cancer in their life. They think this is the end of their eternal suffering and sorrow. It makes little or no sense to them that they might die miserable death. All that matters to them is that the ‘stupid man is gone’. And they are drinking to this erroneous belief. It is really a cold world in here.

Just three weeks ago or so, I was at the NBA conference in Port Harcourt, the city where the enemies of progress killed me and sentenced me to silence.

I was firing from all cylinders at the conference. I spoke against corruption. I spoke against man’s inhumanity to man. I spoke against the ills in our society. If you doubt me, ask Barrister Mike Igini. You can also ask the Attorney-General of the Federation. Not a few felt I demonstrated spark of intelligence and exhibited the courage of conviction and expression. Now, I am here, useless and silenced. It is a cold world in here.

What really was my offence? I have asked myself again and again since I found myself in this cold world. I believe my being here is a huge loss to the Niger Delta. I believe my murder further dehumanises us and portray our region as violent and bestial. My hard work, openness and other virtues I lived for now mean nothing.

Before they sent me here, I was very vocal against the killing field that Port Harcourt, that city where I eked my livelihood, had become. Politicians outsourced the punishment of their opponents through fatal deaths to cultists.

In one fell swoop, they killed nine persons, including a father, his two sons and daughter. Those killed are: former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local government, the late Hon. Christopher Adube, his two sons Lucky and John Adube , his daughter Joy,  a family friend, Mr. Iyk Ogarabe and the family driver, Mr.  Samuel Chukwunonye.

All in the name of politics, many are now homeless. Many are now fatherless; many are widows; and many are on wheel chairs, with pellets of bullets lodged in their bones.  Dreams have died and aspirations doomed.

A monthly average of 19 killings occurred in the state between November 2014 and April 2015. Some of these killings were barbaric. At least I still have my head and other parts in tact in this cold chamber; many  were not that lucky. The heartless men who killed them severed their heads and went away with them. It is a crazy world out there. Really crazy world. And it is a really cold world in here.

My commitment to ensuring that all men should be equal and as such enjoy unfettered freedom and justice free of any form of abuse has been rubbished. I lived to see others happy and free. Now, I am here in this cold world all alone ruing my fate. It really is a cold world in here.

My faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and personal Saviour emboldened me to fight for the people without fear. In Christ, I was content and not moved by filthy lucre. My stand on issues, even when controversial, was always crystal clear. Bad governance and rogue regimes got the rough edge of my tongue. Sadly, people who admired me have to be referring to me now in the past. It really is a cold world in here.

I am at that point when one feels Heaven should arise on one’s behalf. I feel like my blood should speak. But, the way of God is not the way of man. Those who killed me may still be around for decades enjoying their ill-gotten wealth, their free women and wine and all the filths they see as the good things of life.

I wonder what will become of my client, a former Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Council, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, who I strongly believe is being unjustly held in detention.

Since being in this cold world, I have felt may be I should have joined them when I could not beat them. I have felt may be I should not have threatened on a radio programme in Port Harcourt that I would expose how a politician obtained a forged court order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from releasing Tai Local Government Area rerun election results.

On that programme, I promised to present proof that the court order did not exist. I vowed to show that the judge who purportedly gave the order was in the United States at the time the order was purportedly given.

Thanks to those who killed me I am here in this cold world with my proof and clearly not in a position to expose those characters. They have stopped me in my track. Now only God can expose them.

I had complained to close associates of threat text messages, phone calls and so on for speaking out on topical issues. But, we all did nothing to enhance my security and here I am in this cold world, thinking about what was. It is really a cold world in here.

Since being sentenced to this cold world, I have pondered over a few questions: Will my killing serve any other purpose other than a debasement of humanity and eternal pain? How did we get to the point where life becomes so cheap and mean so little to people? How could fellow citizens choose to take the life of other citizens without fear? How can a human being with flesh and blood flowing through his vein riddle a fellow human being with bullets thus cheapening human life in the basest way imaginable?

It is a pity I have now joined the long list of unresolved murder in our land, which I spoke vigorously against. Now, who will continue from where I stopped? I can only guess that some people will. It is really a cold world in here.

Let me leave you all to ponder over 2 Samuel 12:10: ‘… Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house …’   So, shall it be unto those who sent me to this cold world. It is a really cold world in here.

I need to also add this: Those who today glory in evil are merely holding the tiger by its tail. They will definitely end up in the tiger’s belly.

  • Sunflower, onions, garlic, good for cold

Sunflower, onions, garlic, good for cold

Regular consumption of onions, garlic and sunflower seed has been recommended to ward off catarrh and cold as the rainy season beckons.

According to a traditional medicine practitioner, Dr Lambo Adebisi, these plants have essential vitamins and minerals to put the two ailments at bay.

Adebisi said mere inhaling the smell of onions, sunflower and garlic alone can help clear the mucous membrane and nasal track.

This form of healing is aromatherapy, he said, adding: “It is not so courted in Nigeria, except among those who have travelled far and wide”.

He said it is a form of alternative medicine that uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils and essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the treatment of diseases.

People, he advised, can also mix some cold pressed natural sun flower oil with some seabuckthorn seeds oil and grease the inside of their nostrils with a cotton bud or place a soak cotton with the mixture on their nostrils and inhale a couple of times.

Garlic tea, he said, can be drunk twice daily to relieve a catarrh problem.

People who have catarrh, he said, can soak two fingers in vinegar and rub their nose from the tip to beneath the eye area. “Besides, those who have cold or catarrh can bring a bulb of onion close to their nose to smell it. Similarly, vinegar can be applied on the nostrils.

“With two dried fingers, rub on the nostris some vinegar, then put another finger in vinegar and daub the insides of his nostrils. This will bring some relief. Also, people can burn garlic cloves, which has been peeled off for three seconds and inhale the resulted smoke on one nostril and then on the other afterwards,” he said.

He said people can drink garlic tea to prevent coming down with allergic reactions or seasonal allergic rhinitis, or even hay fever

“All a sick person needs to do is boil 20 garlic cloves, 20 bulbs of onions and some violets flower in one litre of water to be taken daily.

The sick person can be taking one or two cups daily depending on his immunity.

Adebisi recommended foods, which are rich in magnesium.

He said this is active against the ailments, adding that cucumbers and red pepper have magnesium, as such people should consume then in soup when sick.

  • Here are five things you can do to avoid catching a cold

    • Wash your hands. Do so often, especially after using the bathroom or touching inanimate objects, like bathroom faucets and door handles, in public places. Also, try to stop touching your face. It sounds silly, but the average American touches his eyes, nose, mouth, or face every 20 seconds, according to Gregory Poland, MD, director of the Vaccine Research Group at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., allowing germs easily access into the body.
    • Go to bed early. You need plenty of sleep to keep your immune system in tip-top shape this time of year.
    • Eat healthy food with plenty of vitamins. This will also keep your immune system going strong. Cold and flu season runs in tandem with candy season — from Halloween to Easter. So make an effort to fill your plate with vegetables at lunch and dinner, and snack on fruit throughout the day.
    • Exercise. We know it’s no longer swimsuit season, but do your best to stay moving during the cooler months. Regular exercise is another immune-system booster, which can prevent cold bugs you do catch from making you sick.
    • Try zinc lozenges. If you feel a cold coming on despite your best efforts to stave off germs, research has shown that zinc lozenges might shorten cold duration. “They bind to the viral particles and help prevent some of the replication,” says Michael Benninger, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic. “It won’t prevent you from getting a cold, but it may make your cold less severe and last not quite as long.”

No vaccine has been developed for the common cold, which can be caused by many different viruses. But you can take some common-sense precautions to slow the spread of cold viruses:

    • Wash your hands. Clean your hands thoroughly and often, and teach your children the importance of hand-washing.
    • Scrub your stuff. Keep kitchen and bathroom countertops clean, especially when someone in your family has a common cold. Wash children’s toys periodically.
    • Use tissues. Always sneeze and cough into tissues. Discard used tissues right away, and then wash your hands carefully. Teach children to sneeze or cough into the bend of their elbow when they don’t have a tissue. That way they cover their mouths without using their hands.

  • Another cold anniversary

    Another cold anniversary

The only people who made something out of the 55th independence anniversary were performers on empty streets and, perhaps, a few couples who took their families outdoors. Otherwise, it was just as drab as the recent editions, reports GRACE OBIKE

Again, there were no blinking lights or colourful banners on the streets of the nation’s capital.  And no huge crowd and ear-splitting sounds which once characterised Eagle Square on a typical Independence Day anniversary. The Square itself was sealed off, and two local football teams could have played all day on the streets.

It was Nigeria’s 55th Independence Day, but there were no celebrations resembling the sort you were used to. All the ceremonies took place in Aso Villa away from popular view.

In the days of former President Goodluck Jonathan, insecurity was to blame for the subdued celebrations. Now, President Muhammadu Buhari’s fiscal discipline, pruning the anniversary budget to a mere N70m, a far cry from the billions usually provided for the ceremonies, has taken fanfare away from the event.

Such performers as skaters grumbled about the low-key edition of the national holiday, especially about the fact that they did not have the opportunity to show their talents on the skate boards before President Muhammadu Buhari and other dignitaries. Some families seized the opportunity to unwind outdoors. Otherwise, it was another unflattering independence anniversary, like the one before it and the one before that.

Some couples took their children to the Millennium Park and other amusement facilities scattered around Abuja, while some went to the numerous children’s parties in town. Some others spent the day in school celebrations or religious gatherings.

While the event went on inside the Villa, a lone man danced around with a hoe, a show he probably hoped would have impressed the President if the event had taken place at the Square and if he were allowed in.

    •Other performers
    •Other performers

A group of skaters under the umbrella of the Coalition of Abuja Skaters expressed their disappointment at the fact the Square was locked up. The group claimed that they were in contact with the organisers of the event and hoped for an opportunity to perform before the President and other dignitaries. They had been practising for weeks. Nothing would have thrilled them more than entertain the president and prove to everyone that skating was good enough to be ranked among other sports in the country.

The coalition is made of such small units as Vision Skaters from Karshi, United Skaters Association, Skate Love, House of Legend Skaters, all of them saying that Nigeria is a country which they love and appreciate and that they are ready to show that they are not an inconsequential bunch of street kids on skates.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the club Sylvester Fadion said, “We have existed for over 10 years; this is a coalition of different clubs coming together to celebrate Nigeria, we are out here displaying our joy for the country. We had written to the people in charge of the celebration and they promised that they may include our name to the program if the Eagle square will be used but now that they are not using the square, we know that we may not be able to get access into the Villa, we are a bit disappointed that no one will watch us because we deal with stunts, skills, choreographic moves and a lot more techniques but now no one to watch us since no one is at the Eagle square, we have a lot of force men amongst us, men of Nigerian Civil Defence, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police a lot more.”

They proceeded to run around Maitama, Wuse, Garki, Asokoro to display their skills.

In satellite like Kubwa for instance, apart from residents going about their business as if nothing important was going, members of the Christ Embassy tried their best to celebrate with their usual 1st of October celebration that usually takes place each year, they took to the streets in green and white, with loud music which a lot of the members danced to following behind a member riding a horse dressed in green an while and a vehicle carrying musical instruments that blared different songs as they distributed the Rhapsody of Reality.

Member of the church, James expressed his excitement at the independence day celebration.

“Our church always celebrates this day because it is important, we also use it as an opportunity to remind Nigerians of God’s love and goodness in our lives which is the reason why we share free copies of the Rhapsody, we wanted to do something nice and different which informed the reason for the horse because we all believe that Nigeria has come a long way in 55 years.”

A taxi driver who could not be bothered to state his name said that as long as he is concerned, he has no reason to celebrate unless, the government will be sharing money to Nigerian.

“I’m out here working because I need the money more than anything right now; who cares about  Independence Day celebrations? Are they going to share money? With the hardship in the country right now, I will only go to a place that will give me money.”

  • Tips to ease cold

On the first day of flu symptoms, follow the rules of flu etiquette. Call your work or school and tell them you’re not coming in for a few days because you’re sick — and very contagious! Then, take advantage of these days of flu and let your body have much-needed rest. Pull out your favorite movies, curl up on the couch, and spend the time watching DVDs while your body battles the virus.

    • Drink plenty of fluids.

Increase fluids such as water, fruit juices, sports drinks, and broth-based soups (like chicken noodle soup). Fluids help keep your respiratory system hydrated and liquefy thick mucus that can build up to cause infection in the bronchial tubes.

    • Treat aches and fever so you feel comfortable.

Got fever? Fever is a flu symptom and occurs when your body temperature rises to fight off infection (in this case, the flu virus).

Treat fever and aches with over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Ask your doctor which is right for you.

Aspirin should never be given to children and adults younger than 19 years old with symptoms of flu or cold because it is associated with a condition known as Reye’s syndrome, a very serious illness that can damage the brain and liver.

    • Use cough suppressants and expectorants to treat the cough.

Over-the-counter cough remedies are available to suppress cough. There are also over-the-counter expectorants that liquefy thick mucus so it can be coughed up. There is some disagreement among doctors about how well these cough medicines work.

    • Use steam inhalations.

You can fill the bathroom sink with steaming water.

    Source: www.webmd.com

Add 1 teaspoon of the over-the-counter ointment Vicks Vapo Rub to the steaming water, and then breathe in the steam for several minutes until you get relief. Another alternative is to add a few drops of oil of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) or menthol to the water. Eucalyptus may help open up bronchial tubes, ease congestion, and make breathing a little easier. There is not enough evidence, however, to say that any of these really help with the symptoms.

    6. Sit in a steamy bathroom.

If you are still congested, sit in a bathroom with the door closed and allow the shower to run hot until the room fills with moist steam. Inhaling the moisture can help to open your airways. Sit away from the water to avoid burns.

    7. Run the humidifier.

If the air is dry, a warm mist humidifier or vaporizer can moisten the air and help ease congestion and coughing. Be sure to keep the humidifier clean, however, to prevent the growth of bacteria and molds.

    8. Try soothing lozenges.

Sucking on soothing lozenges will help to moisten and coat a scratchy throat and may reduce the cough associated with flu.

    9. Try saline (salt water) nasal drops.

Saline nose drops or sprays are available over-the-counter at any drug or grocery store and are effective, safe, and nonirritating, even for children. Put several drops into one nostril, and then gently blow the mucus and saline out of that nostril. Repeat the process in the opposite nostril until both are unblocked.

  • Blowing hot and cold

•IGP Abba must know that playing god with Speaker Tambuwal’s security is a serious constitutional crime

Reminiscent of life imitating art, Suleiman Abba, inspector general of Police (IGP) reminds us of the Ola Rotimi comic play, Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again.

The way the IGP flexes muscles he does not have by law, and assumes the security of House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, is at his discretion, is reminiscent of a tragi- comedy.  He must snap out of his costly delusion — and fast!

After the unprecedented Police invasion of the National Assembly, the tear-gassing of members and the aborted attempt to keep the Speaker from the House — a clear illegality the Jonathan Presidency quickly disowned, putting the IGP on the spot — Abba’s Police appeared to have eaten crow; and tried to right, through the back door, the outlawry it had committed in the open.

It made it be announced, after Alhaji Tambuwal had emerged the Sokoto gubernatorial candidate of his new party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), that the Police would now restore his security — not as Speaker, but as APC gubernatorial candidate of Sokoto State.  The Police statement even worked the spin that since in 2011 the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) Borno State gubernatorial candidate was assassinated before the election, the Police would avert such a disaster this time round.

Of course, the Police plight was self-inflicted.  To justify crass political partisanship, even if the Police, as an agent of the state, should be neutral and fair to every party in a political dispute, IGP Abba tragically misdirected himself by misinterpreting Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution — claiming that since Speaker Tambuwal had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he automatically lost his seat in the House: and by extension, his Speakership.

That was arrant nonsense — and the IGP and his prompters knew it.  But even if his stance were correct, it still was not his duty — the mere head of the state’s Police — to seize the constitutional duty of the courts, and start issuing illegal orders.

Still, the IGP did not only do that, to the blemish of his oath of office, he also rudely referred to Alhaji Tambuwal, in front of a parliamentary committee, claiming he did not “recognise” the Speaker.

However, ferocious public opinion, including a powerful intervention by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, unnerved Mr. Abba.  That probably forced the Police to announce the face-saving gambit to restore Alhaji Tambuwal’s security as a gubernatorial candidate, until the latest twist that  he must apply for it!

But even this has further put Mr. Abba on the spot.  Alhaji Tambuwal remains Speaker, de jure and de facto — even   after the open criminality of the Police raiding the National Assembly to essay an illegal impeachment; and after the attempted judicial sleight of hand of trying to declare the Speaker’s office vacant, even while the case was on.  Both failed.

Indeed, when he House resumed on December 16, the Speaker presided, with the Police, outside those posted to the National Assembly, banished to the first gate of the facility.

So, on what basis might IGP Abba still be withholding the Speaker’s security details, the right of his office by law?  It is a monumental insult in the eyes of the law, in the eyes of common sense, in the eyes of decency.  Indeed, it is crass outlawry — ironically coming from the IGP, the head of the primary state agency to enforce the law.

IGP Abba must restore Speaker Tambuwal’s security today.  The Jonathan Presidency cannot continue to play games with the security of Nigeria’s No. 4 citizen.  With all the power at our disposal, we say no to executive impunity against the legislature.

We also say no to the grave desecration of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, of which the legislature is the most prominent symbol.  This lunacy has gone on for too long.

SWOT analysis is not new in the marketing landscape. It is a tool for auditing an organisation and its environment. SWOT analysis is the first stage of planning and it helps marketers to focus on key issues. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

According to experts, strengths and weaknesses are the internal challenges that constrain a brand from meeting the needs of the market and make profit. Threats are external SWOT factors, such as government policies and economic downturn, among others, that impede the growth of a brand. To overcome threats, brand owners are often advised to look inward and see opportunities in what appears to be a threat.

“We should aim to turn our weaknesses into strengths, and our threats into opportunities. Then, finally, SWOT will give managers options to match internal strengths with external opportunities,” said experts.

In the air conditioning arm of the electronics market, the major competitors have had their own share of the SWOT. With financial power, strong technology, global brand status at their disposal as strength, they have been weakened and threatened by internal and external market realities, such as increasing hot temperature in living room and offices, energy cost, poor sanitation and low disposable income, among others for a long time.

While many consumers manage  to bear the challenges to instal AC in their homes and offices, the use of alternative power has not really helped them to fully enjoy them. As a result, manufacturers of ACs suffered much with loss of patronage.

Today, the AC brands’ owners have won their thinking cap. Through investment in researches and developments, they have diagnosed the market; saw their strength, weaknesses, threats and opportunities to restore confidence in the market category, especially in a country like Nigeria where the economy is highly volatile.

The results of these market research has enhanced new value propositions which every AC brand owners are now mustering to edge one another for market share. With arrays of ACs that explore high cooling capacity, energy efficiency, low voltage operation to save energy cost, healthy air functions, healthy dehumidification capacity and lots more as value proposition, the market is now becoming receptive again.

Giving the market this breather, more households are now awash with offerings and are made to believe that beyond providing a cooling atmosphere, AC also now has an inbuilt mechanism that kills germs in their air.

However, these new found opportunities, backed by the player’s strengths (cutting-edge technology, financial power and global brand reputation) have now created stiff competitions among players within the electronic market. Samsung, Haier Thermocool, LG and Panasonic who ordinarily jostle for market dominance in others market categories such as TV, DVD, Home Theatre, Fridge, Stabiliser are now tapping into the opportunities in the AC market category after reawakening the market through quality, reliable and innovative electrical AC by harnessing cutting edge technology to address these everyday household challenges.

This surprised many brand analysts to see “some old brands that had almost gone into extinction in the market suddenly reappeared, while many new ones also found their ways into the market.”

Despite the strong brand reputations the brands command in the electronic market generally, their venture into strengthening their game in the AC category appears not enough, even though they are leaders in other electronic market category. For instance, Samsung and LG seem to be leading in the distribution of flat screen televisions but Panasonic is becoming more visible in the air-conditioning. However, LG, according to analyst, foray into air-conditioning in the market has almost turned a misadventure as the name ‘LG’ only exists in recall as far as promoters of AC are concerned in the market. Also, Haier Thermocool, came up with series of AC products during the year as part of efforts to thank Nigerians for standing by the brand in the last forty years.

Irrespective of the area of their strengths in each category of the electronic market, they all now bring new values to address the previous lull in the market. During the launch of its new set of Air conditioners under Haier Thermocool brand name into the Nigerian market, the Managing Director, Thermocool Nigeria, Mr. Panos Katsis, stated the entry of the new Air Conditioners is a result of long term research for a product that will be a one stop experience for customers.

“Research has shown that the relationship between office work performance and temperature is due to the thermal comfort level of body, when the temperature is too high or too low, the body does not perform to maximum efficiency. So, the role of the air conditioner is to regulate the temperature of your environment, so that you have a better work atmosphere, to work effectively or enjoy sound sleep at home. Humidity also, plays a critical role in making an environment comfortable or uncomfortable. These new ranges of Haier Thermocool air conditioners will help to regulate and provide the right atmosphere,” said Katsis.

“In recognising the desire of Nigerians for good quality in household or office appliances; we have deliberately designed our products to meet these standards. Our customers in Nigeria appreciate our innovative, time tested approach to delivering quality experiences through our range of products. That is why we are still here and we hope to continue, adding value especially to the Nigerian family while not neglecting their comfort,” Katsis said.

The Marketing Director, Mr. Vikramjeet Singh said the product is available in different ranges and “horse power” capacities such as: the 1-HP, 1.5-HP, 2-HP, 3-HP, 5-HP and 10-HP with value creation that address market challenges AC makers are having over the years. “Inverter range offers consumer 51 per cent energy saving, while turbo plus offer fast cooling operation, Eco and Eco plus series offers low voltage operations. All the ranges come in various design options and equipped with copper condenser and 3-year warranty on cabinet and compressors,” he said.

Singh stated further that the innovation is driven by the threat in the market place part of which is dynamic nature of consumers. “However, we believe that as the market keeps changing, consumer needs also keep changing. One of the major needs these new range of Haier Thermocool Air Conditioners will be solving is the issue of electricity power because electricity is one of the major concerns we have in Nigeria. While our government is doing a lot in terms of building infrastructure for electricity generation, in the mean time, we need appliances that can withstand the low voltage supply we presently experience. To cater for this need and ensure our customers get satisfaction, all the new ranges of these Air Conditioners have been designed with features that will enable them withstand lower power voltage,” he said.

  • Cold, Cough, Swollen legs, Congestive heart failure

Cold, Cough, Swollen legs, Congestive heart failure

THE seasons are changing gear, and many people are coughing, sneezing, wheezing or their noses are running. But, mind you, not all coughs follow the ebbing of the rain season and the onset of harmattan. Some people, especially the old, may be coughing because their hearts are enlarged and, thus, weak, two weak to pump blood out of the lungs. The lungs, overfilled with blood, are irritated, and are trying to expel the irritant. This may be a sign of congestive heart failure, often misdiagnosed as a stubborn cough and treated with cough mixtures. It was the cause of the deaths at 76 of one of my uncles and an auntie. My uncle watched television till about 11p.m, retired to bed soon after, and began to cough at about 1.00am. It is possible he may have survived the cough if he went to hospital immediately. One was opposite his house. But old people do not always wish to attract attention to their health status. Perhaps he should not have taken some water to douse the cough. For this could increase the blood volume and give a fatigued heart more work to do. He did. And, as the cough worsened, he had to be walked down the stairs and across the road. He remarked on the way that his legs were becoming heavier. Obviously, not enough blood was reaching them. He didn’t return home!
Two weeks ago, I had a cold which ran my nose and gave me a tickling cough. It was a reminder to me that the rains were rounding off and the harmattan warming up. Like the back of their palms, fruit sellers know of the seasons than many of us. They know hawks flutter in the sky when the new yam flourishes in the farms. Cough tends to be widespread at this time. Among chickens, this is the critical time New Castle disease goes for their jugular. When I reared native chicken in cages for an experiment, I found that they survived New Castle and Gomboro if I gave them garlic or onion, both of which are respiratory herbs. From the women in the chicken market who may keep about a thousand birds in seemingly airless stacks of cages, I learned of the wonderful effects lime or lemon juice has on the health of these animals. In the drinking water of these birds, the women would cut lime or lemon into bits and keep them in the water pans or troughs. Mortality among these birds is low or non-existent in many cases. Dr. Lind in about 1842 had shown English people how good for health lime could be. Remember that English sailors of those days returned from long voyages with some of their teeth fallen off. Dr. Lind discovered that was because the sailors didn’t have enough fresh fruits on board. While we may think today that all fresh fruits are useful, for they are Vitamin C, it has been found that Vitamin C alone does not effectively stop gum disease or loosening of the teeth in their sockets. There are other factors, including bioflavonoid, plentiful in the pith of fresh fruits which we throw away co-opted by Mother Nature to help Vitamin C do this job. When Dr. Lind gave lime to British sailors, their nightmare ended. From then on the British government by law made British ships keep lime on board for sailors. It was from this culture that the gin and lime culture evolved. Dr. Lind and the women in the Nigerian live chicken markets may not have heard about Limolene. It is an oil found in the peel of orange and some other citrus fruits. When I find people coughing or beset with a cold, I advise that they extract this oil or cut the peel into tiny pieces and boil in a little amount of water. They are to gaggle with the solution of this oil which collects on the heated water, and then swallow it. To the surprise of many people, the cough goes soon after. If I wish to excite such people, I give them a Limolene soft gel, ask them to keep it in the mouth for one minute and then tell me what they think it is. ‘Orange’, many of them often exclaim. Thereafter, I tell them about limolene and how, apart from helping coughs and cold, it has been found to be an anti-histamine which may help some asthma attacks. Rex Adams says in his Miracle Medicine Foods that asthmatics can dry orange peel and keep it in cellophane packs kept in a refrigerator. From time to time, especially if they sense an attack is coming, asthmatics can chew these dried orange peel cuts.

    A physician’s dilemma
hen we have a cough or a cold, our first reaction is to try to knock it out. I found myself in this boat about 30 years ago when, on the eve of an important spiritual event, which takes place once in a life time for many people, I suddenly developed a cold and cough. Of course, I took Vitamin C and Zinc lozenges which in Europe and America, is said to cut the duration of a cold by an average of seven days, according to Dr. Elson Haas, one-time director of Marin Clinic of Preventive Medicine and Health Education in California. Chicken soup, said to also help, was not immediately available. What I believe gave me the magic wand was garlic perle. As suggested by Rex Adams, I took two gels every four hours or so. And, by the following day, my throat was clear and my nose was free. But this was a clear case of suppression of a natural process which could backfire.
In that natural process, coughing is regarded as a part of the immune system and respiratory defence mechanism. In that process, a sudden burst of air and fluid from the respiratory system (trachea, bronchi etc) support expulsion of dust, microbes, chemicals and other toxic substances from the-air passages. But a cough can also be a warning signal of infections in the breathing system such as bronchitis, asthma, lung cancer and heart problems. This then means that the underlying cause of a cough has to be determined before a decision is taken about how to clear it. If it is a simple case of the body trying to expel pathogens (invading germs) or irritants, the diet may be supplemented with remedies which, for example, help the immune process. The common cold is caused by rhinoviruses which plant themselves on the adhesion molecules which attach human immune cells on the lining of the respiratory tract. It is a wonderful scenario. When lymphocytes, a member of the mobile immune cell family, attacks these rhinoviruses, the body produces more ‘lymphocytes’ for back up defence. This means more adhesion molecules have to be produced for this stand-by reinforcement. That means, also, that more breeding grounds for rhinoviruses have been produced. A huge war must, therefore, rage, which causes those tell tale signs of watery eyes, sneezing, wheezing and coughing. Sometimes, the body temperature goes up, so that some of the pathogens can be eliminated through the pores of the skin during sweating. Even the mucus and the phlegm are ways and means of evacuating the irritants and dead or expended immune cells. This is why it would appear no pharmaceutical drug can cure the common cold. For it tries to suppress the immune process, not to support it. Other than garlic, one remedy I know works well for the common cold by supporting the immune system is Golden Seal Root. It is a berberine containing herb. Berbering is a chemical which coats the lining of hollow tubes in the body, such as the nasal cavity and the intestine, thereby preventing adhesion by microbes. Adhesion gives microbes the opportunity to extract proteins from the body’s cells and grow their own population accordingly. Thus deprived of nutrition, these microbes become weakened and are easier to deal with by the immune soldiers. Golden Seal root may not be used longer than seven days at a time, with breaks of seven days rest in-between onslaughts, because it may dehydrate the mucus membrane. It is important to follow this therapy with high grade vitamin A supplements which support cellular hydration.
When the process is disturbed, the germs may be driven underground, someday to cause troubles such as bronchitis, bronchiestasis, emphysema or, pneumonia. We all know too well that water will always find its level. If we block its flow one way, it doesn’t immediately angrily challenge us. It will await us, someday, where we least expect to find it! Herbal medicine would rather support the immune system. For example, oregano oil or spray helps in dilating the nasal passage to enhance speedier evacuation. Clove oil dropped in hot water produces vapour which may be inhaled for this purpose.
Coltfoot tea releases serious congestion and dry cough. Garlic activates the production of more Macro-phages. These are germ-eating giant immune cells. Maitake mushroom contains a substance which kills viruses, and is effective for persistent colds. A proprietary blend known as Maitake D-Fraction is popular in cancer therapy. Maitake Gruffria goes well, as a detoxifier, with the D-fraction. Reishi Mushroom is known to prevent colds from aggravating asthma. It is rich in anti-histamines and compounds which inhibit platelet activating factor (PAF), the hormone which causes bronchial airways to constrict. Siberian Ginseng prevents cold after exposure to toxins. As an adaptogen, it enhances the body and makes it face and stand tops over challenges. Vitamin C is known to work as a scavenger for trash, including those of viruses.
In the doctors book of home remedies, researchers at mount Sinai Medical Centre, Miami Beach, are reported to have discovered that ‘a hot chicken soup either because of its aroma or its taste, appears to possess an additional substance for increasing the flow of nasal mucus’.
They add: ‘These secretions, what comes out when you blow your nose or sneeze serves a first line of defence in removing germs from your system’
I believe this is what old people try to achieve when they use snuff. I have found that one or two capsules or two capsules of cayenne pepper every day helps to improve blood and other circulation and warmth.

    Congestive Heart Failure
s I said earlier, many people try to suppress stubborn cough with cough medications without realising their cough may be a sign of an underlying heart disease. There are many people who go about their daily lives with swellings in the lower limbs which refuse to respond to aspirin or warfarin or some other blood thinners which the doctors prescribed to free the congestion and relieve the heart of damaging overwork. Many of such people run kidney function tests which give their kidneys beautiful testimonials. But some doctors advise laboratory testing kits do not catch sub-clinical malaise. They detect problems only when the damage has begun to seriously manifest. The same may be true of clean bills of health given to many ailing hearts. In this scenario, some doctors opt out of medical technology and return to their gut instinct, or rather intuition, relying on the art of medicine, and not the science of medicine.
In this case, the question may be asked:
•Does the swelling disappear when the patient is walking?
•Does the swelling persist when the patients is asleep at night, on a plane surface?
•If the swelling persists in No. 2 above, can this be a kidney problem?
There are some cases that fail to fit a module. In such cases, the holistic physician begins to think not only about kidney health but about liver health as well. In the books, ‘Your body’s many cries for water and you are not sick, you are only thirsty’, Dr Batmanghelidj, now of blessed memory, says it is “criminal” to give diuretics in oedema conditions because, in his view, the body is using the eodema as a storage for water which is becoming scarce or likely to be given a current trend towards dehydration. In eodema, the regular doctor advises against sodium intake, believing elevated sodium blood level caused fluid to accumulate. Dr. Batmanghelidj says capital no. He says sodium is needed to hold water in the intestinal fluid, that is fluid which surrounds the cells, and that a shortage of sodium in the diet was causing such loss of water, as advised the body, to create water storages by retaining sodium to do the job.
Whatever the doctors are thinking or saying, it appears fairly settled that congestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscles are unable to pump blood fast enough to supply all the nutrient and oxygen needed by the body.
Among the symptoms are fatigue and weakness, especially on exertion, and swelling associated with fluid retention.
According to Japanese Kampo Medicine by Robert Rister:
“Fluid retention in the lungs can also cause shortness of breath since congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and heart attack are inter-related”, all three conditions are discussed in this entry.
Congestive heart failure may be acute (sudden) or chronic (long standing). Sudden cases may be caused by myocardial infarction or heart attack. This is when enough blood does not flow into the heart through the coronary (heart) arteries. This may be caused by blockage of cholesterol, blood clots or homocysteine. Some heart attacks are silent, producing no prior symptoms. They can cause heart failure. Both may arise from coronary artery disease in which one or more of the arteries are blocked. Infections of the heart muscles can also cause acute heart failure. This condition is called cardiomyopathy. As the name suggests, Chronic congestive heart failure is usually an effect of high blood pressure or heart valve problems or previous heart attacks. Other causes suggested for this condition include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, extreme obesity. In the train also as contributing factors are chronic lung disease such as emphysema and anaemia. Sight should not be lost of arrhythmia, a slow, fast or irregular heartbeat. This condition may be mild or worrisome. A worrisome heart beat irregularity is ventricular fibrillation. In this condition, the beat is rapid, uncontrolled and ineffective and, so, the heart cannot pump blood well into the arteries. Some of the symptoms of congestive heart failure are:
    •Enlarged heart and
•Fluid retention. Enlargement occurs when the heart has to work too hard to pump out blood. The blood vessels may be hard (arteriosclerosis) or blocked (atherosclerosis) or the major organs (liver, pancreas, kidneys or spleen) may be blocked and resisting blood flow.
Intially, enlargement helps the heart, but weakens it in the end, decreasing heart pumping action. To support a weak heart, the body retains sodium and fluid, to increase blood volume. In the end, the excess fluid seeps into surrounding tissue, causing oedema.
Diuretics, such as dandelion, increase urine flow, and relieves the heart of pressure. Kidney proprietary supplement, such as kidney Rescue and kidney KDY-CL clean, heal and tone the kidney. Vasodilators such as Hawthorn Berries, Garlic, Bilbery (also good for the eyes and blood sugar) enlarge blood vessels to reduce tension. Co Enzyme Q-10 energises the heart. Hawthorn increases mechanical pump action, according to many studies. Rex Adam suggests that a combination of Vitamin B1 and Garlic helps to shrink enlarged heart. Shepherd’s Purse, known for stopping bleeding, also helps to muscularise muscles, which is why it is used for the womb, a muscular organ, and should be good for the heart, another muscular organ.
Magnesium helps in arrhythmias. I have not discussed homeopathic/biochemic cell salts. Ferrum phos oxygenates and removes blockages. Magphos stops palpitations. Lion’s Man should improve nerve flow and improve nerve action in arrhythmias. Rister suggests that 200Mg of Thiamine (Vitamin B1) improves functions of the left ventricle, which pumps bloods to all parts of the body.
One of the herbs I would like to suggest for heart disorders is Hawthorn Berries of which about 300 species are available. It has been used medicinally by many cultures for many medicinal purposes for many centuries. In Europe, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most single significant cause of untimely death. Modern research into the medicinal uses of hawthorn has, therefore, concerned its effects on the cardiovascular system, that is the heart and the blood vessels- arteries, veins and capillaries.
