Palmer returns with goal as Chelsea end winless run

Cole Palmer scored his first goal since September as Chelsea ended a four-game winless run with a 2-0 victory over in-form Everton at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old forward, still managing a groin injury that kept him out for more than two months, opened the scoring after 21 minutes in front of England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Right-back Malo Gusto, who set up Palmer’s goal, added a second just before half-time.

Everton dominated the opening 20 minutes, with Iliman Ndiaye having two shots on goal and James Garner also going close.

But the aptly nicknamed ‘Cold’ Palmer calmed Chelsea’s nerves after a poor start to December, which included defeats at Leeds and Atalanta and a draw at Bournemouth.

Played in behind Everton’s defence by Gusto, Palmer took a touch before sending goalkeeper Jordan Pickford the wrong way with a finish into the near post.

Momentum then swung Chelsea’s way. Alejandro Garnacho missed several chances, including shooting wide for an open goal after capitalising on substitute Carlos Alcaraz’s poor back pass, moments after injured Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall came off with an injury against his former club.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Everton’s Jack Grealish also had opportunities before the home side doubled their lead just before the break, with Gusto reacting quickest to turn in Pedro Neto’s cross.

In the second half, Garnacho scooped a close-range shot over before being replaced by Jamie Gittens. Grealish had a header saved and volleyed wide – the latter a chance that should have seen him pull one back – while Ndiaye hit a late shot against the post and Trevoh Chalobah blocked another from Alcaraz inside the box.

Superior finishing proved decisive for Chelsea, who consolidated fourth place in the Premier League, while Everton remain eighth having played a game more than most of their rivals.

Cole Palmer suffers new injury, set to miss three matches

Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer has broken a toe in an accident at home, sidelining him for the club’s next three fixtures against Burnley, Barcelona and Arsenal.

The England midfielder had been nearing a return from the groin injury he sustained in September.

However, on Friday, head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that Palmer has now suffered an unexpected setback due to the freak incident.

“Unfortunately, he had an accident at home where he hit his toe but it is nothing important – but he won’t be back in the next week,” Maresca said.

When asked how long Palmer could now be missing, Maresca added: “We don’t know. [His toe] It’s fractured.

“The only thing we know: he is not available for this week and next week.”

Cole Palmer will likely be out of action until after next month’s international break to give the Chelsea midfielder time to shake off a groin problem, according to  manager Enzo Maresca.

The England international came off midway through the first half in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United last week, their first Premier League defeat of the season.

The 23-year-old had previously missed games against West Ham and Fulham with the same issue.

Maresca told reporters that Chelsea had decided to “protect” Palmer so his injury would not get worse.

“We decided to rest him for the next two or three weeks, probably until the international break, just to see if, with that rest, he can be able to recover 100 percent and to be completely fit after the international break,” he explained.

But Maresca said he did not believe the problem required surgery.

“It’s just a matter of managing his pain in his groin, that, you know, with the amount of games, it’s something that can happen,” said the Italian.

“So this is the reason why we try to be a little bit conservative with him, to give him rest. Hopefully, he can be 100 percent fit after the international break.”

Chelsea host Brighton today, followed by home games against Benfica and Liverpool next week, but they then have a two-week break to accommodate international matches.

Maresca said Tosin Adarabioyo would also likely be out until the international break with a calf injury, while fellow defender Wesley Fofana suffered concussion in Chelsea’s midweek win against Lincoln in the League Cup.

Palmer sets Premier League record with four-goal

Cole Palmer has become the first Premier League player to score four times before half-time as he powered Chelsea to a 4-2 victory in an entertaining clash with Brighton.

The visitors had gone in front at Stamford Bridge before Palmer struck for the first time, equalising 15 minutes after Georginio Rutter’s opener.

A second from the penalty spot soon followed from the England international, before he completed his hat-trick in just nine minutes and 48 seconds of match time with a sublime free kick.

Carlos Baleba hit back for Brighton but there was time left in the half for Palmer to add a fourth, converting a through ball from Jadon Sancho to complete a remarkable feat.

While players have registered four times in the second half previously, Palmer’s achievement was unique in the Premier League era.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a sparkling season last year in his first campaign in London after his move from Manchester City, dragging the club back into European competition.

After 22 goals last season, he had registered twice in Enzo Maresca’s first five league games in charge.

EPL: Cole Palmer scores four as Chelsea beat Brighton

Cole Palmer became the first player to score four first-half goals in a Premier League game as Chelsea swept away Brighton to go third in the table.

In a remarkably entertaining match, Palmer, 22, also hit the post and had a further goal ruled out before the break as Chelsea’s rapid frontline cashed in on Brighton’s stubborn insistence on playing a high defensive line.

Albion scored twice early on themselves as fans were treated at a sun-kissed Stamford Bridge, with both of their strikes owing something to errors from Chelsea’s former Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

But, after Georginio Rutter headed the visitors ahead, Palmer took a firm grasp of the game with a stunning individual display.

The England player had hit the post and put the ball in the net from an offside position before opening the scoring from Nicolas Jackson’s pass – with all three chances coming in the space of 138 breathless seconds.

Palmer then scored his 10th consecutive successful penalty for Chelsea after the impressive Jadon Sancho was brought down, before capping a 10-minute hat-trick with a brilliant 25-yard free kick into the top corner.

A fourth for Palmer, arrowed in from a Sancho pass, came soon after Carlos Baleba had seized on Sanchez’s poor ball out to give Brighton hope.

Chelsea, who put six past Wolves last month, were again superb going forwards but Brighton’s refusal to change their approach after such a flurry of identical chances was bizarre, bordering on naive as young manager Fabian Hurzeler tasted defeat for the first time.

Perhaps predictably the second half was far less incident-packed – although Palmer did waste a great chance for a fifth when he fired wide.

Palmer extends Chelsea stay until summer 2033

Cole Palmer has reportedly signed a new two-year contract extension with Chelsea which will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2033.

Palmer had an excellent first season with the Blues, scoring 27 goals and providing 15 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.

The 22-year-old’s impressive form last season earned him an England debut and a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the European Championship.

While the Three Lions were unable to win the title, Palmer left his mark on the competition, scoring the side’s only goal in the defeat to Spain in the final.

Chelsea signed Palmer from Manchester City last summer for an initial fee of £40m, with potential add-ons amounting to an additional £2.5m.

Upon his arrival, the 22-year-old committed to a seven-year contract, with an option to extend for an extra 12 months.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the new deal includes a higher wage for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who is now set to remain at the club until 2033.

Palmer is also one of six nominees for the PFA Men’s Young Player of the Year award for 2023-24, alongside Bukayo Saka, Michael Olise, Joao Pedro, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

The winner of this prestigious award will be announced on August 20.

Palmer’s new contract is the latest piece of business Chelsea have done in what has already been another busy summer for the club.

The Blues have already spent over £185m on as many as 10 new players this offseason, and have allowed double that number of players to depart Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea splashed out almost £60m on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Estevao Willian last month before completing the £54m signing of Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers this week.

Among those who have moved on this summer are Ian Maatsen and Lewis Hall, who were sold to Aston Villa and Newcastle United for around £37m and £28m respectively.

Conor Gallagher’s future looks almost certain to lie away from West London, while the Blues are also rumoured to be looking for suitable offers for academy graduates Trevoh Chalobah and Armando Broja.

  • Palmer heating up for Man City reunion

Palmer heating up for Man City reunion

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has emerged as a Player of the Year contender thanks to a dazzling campaign that left Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to rue what might have been ahead of their reunion in today’s FA Cup semi-final.

Palmer is enjoying a breakthrough season following his surprise move from City on transfer deadline day in September.

The 21-year-old scored four times in Chelsea’s 6-0 rout of Everton on Monday, showing why he is nicknamed ‘Cold Palmer’ with an ice-cool penalty after refusing to let team-mate Nicolas Jackson take the kick.

Palmer’s ruthless penalty prowess would have come in handy for City, who were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday after a shoot-out that featured misses from Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic.

While Palmer’s old club were stunned by that painful loss, Chelsea will face City at Wembley in buoyant mood after his latest highlight reel performance against Everton.

Given licence to roam from his nominal starting position on the right of Chelsea’s front three, Palmer has starred with lethal finishing and a creative touch that has produced nine Premier League assists this season.

Palmer has netted 23 times in all competitions this term, including 20 in 28 league appearances to make him the joint top-scorer alongside City’s Erling Haaland.

It is unlikely he would have matched those impressive statistics if he had stayed at City, where Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku blocked his path to progress from promising academy graduate to first-team regular.

Instead of a bit-part role with City, Palmer’s emergence as Chelsea’s most influential player has been the brightest spot in a difficult campaign for the west Londoners.

Palmer has remained polite about the end of his 13-year association with City, but there can be little doubt knocking out the FA Cup holders would carry extra significance for the forward.

“To make the decision to come to Chelsea was a big one for me and my family, but I just wanted to play football. I’m thankful to Chelsea for the opportunity. I’m buzzing,” Palmer said.

Beaten by Liverpool in the League Cup final in February, Chelsea are chasing their first domestic silverware since the 2018 FA Cup.

Another virtuoso Palmer display will be vital to under-fire Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino’s hopes of remaining in contention to win his first trophy in England.

“He is showing that the club made the right decision signing him. He’s a player who had the capacity to score goals when he was at City. It doesn’t surprise us,” Pochettino said.

“The way he’s adapted, playing and performing is fantastic. He behaves like a top scorer. It’s amazing for the team and him.”

Palmer can also remind Guardiola of the contentious decision that has come back to haunt the Spaniard.

Eye-catching goals for City in the Community Shield against Arsenal and the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla seemed to cement Palmer as a certainty to follow in Foden’s footsteps as a homegrown prodigy.

But, unwilling to accept Palmer’s desire for more regular playing time, Guardiola took Chelsea’s £42 million ($52 million) offer.

With City hampered by injuries to Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne for significant periods this season, Palmer, who has 11 goals in his last six games, would have been a more than adequate replacement as a scorer and creator.

City have battled back to the top of the Premier League, but Palmer robbed them of two important points with his last-gasp penalty in the 4-4 draw between the teams in November.

Palmer, who has won two England caps, was not involved in the recent Euro 2024 warm-up friendlies against Brazil and Belgium due to injury.

But his brilliant form has put him firmly in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

If Palmer’s FA Cup and European Championship dreams come true, Pochettino is likely to be sitting more comfortably, while Guardiola is left with only regrets.
