  • Ignore Yeeh’s rantings, Cole tells Rivers’ people

Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Tonye Cole has urged the people to ignore the vituperations of deputy governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Akpo Yeeh, who resigned on Monday and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Cole, through the spokesman of his campaign organisation, Ogbonna Nwuke, said Yeeh’s view was skewed by the money he got from Governor Nyesom Wike.

He said: “It is pertinent to note that neither the APC nor the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has interfered with the internal organisation of the AAC. We know that Yeeh, whose appetite for sudden wealth has overtaken reason, is not the author of the script that he read in his Port Harcourt residence on Monday.

“We sympathise with Yeeh, a self-avowed young politician, whose hunt for a meal ticket has led him to mortgage his conscience for a mess of porridge. It is laughable that the crafted statement delivered claims that the Minister of Transportation insisted he would appoint 90 per cent of the commissioners, 23 local government chairmen, in an undated resignation address served to the public.

“We are not shocked by the lies that Yeeh served the public to put food on his table. “Wike and other PDP leaders are determined to steal the people’s mandate through bribery of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other institutions. Institutions that Wike and other PDP leaders have been unable to bribe – Army, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the APC – are understandably at the apex of their criticisms.

“It is obvious that what is critical at this time is the quest to deliver unto Rivers people, a government that is transparent, accountable, responsible, focused and committed to their welfare.

“We state unequivocally that political parties enjoy the right to enter into coalition with any party of their choice, to form a government of state or national unity, which will deliver dividends of democracy and serve the people’s interest.

“In desperation, Wike, PDP and its leadership are taking their frustration on the Minister of Transportation. Actual power belongs to the people of Rivers State. All that the Minister has is one vote; those other votes which have threatened the power base of Wike and making him restless have been cast by the people who have grown tired of a rascal administration and a NEW vision that is skewed…”

  • Election shift prevented violence, says Cole

The Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has said postponing the elections prevented violence in Rivers.

According to him, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had deployed over 2,000 armed thugs in his Abonnema-Kalabari hometown, headquarters of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.

Spokesman of the Tonye Cole Campaign Organisation, Ogbonna Nwuke, said Abonnema and neighbouring communities were under siege at the weekend. He was shocked at the flagrant disregard for the peace accord signed by political parties, and urged security operatives to take steps to protect life and property.

Cole said: “It is now evident that attempts by PDP leaders in Rivers State to accuse APC members of violence is a ploy to cover their plan to inflict harm on innocent and defenceless citizens.

“Shootings in Abonnema and neighbouring communities started about 9pm on Friday and continued till February 16. The sporadic gunshots were laced with blasts of dynamite, all aimed at intimidating voters and preventing APC members from participating in the elections.”

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do the needful by placing the Rivers APC on the ballot, stressing that postponing the elections provided the opportunity to do the right thing.

But the Director of Information and Communications of Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council, Emma Okah, said APC is afraid of elections, having seen the defeat ahead of them.

Okah accused INEC of working with the APC-led Federal Government to truncate democracy, saying Nigerians would certainly vent their anger on the “failed” APC government for the frustration and hardship it had brought upon the land.

  • Cole: drift in Rivers must be reversed

RIVERS State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Pastor Tonye Cole has said the drift in the state must be reversed in the February elections.

Cole, in his New Year’s message, urged the people to keep hope alive, and be ready to make the right choices in 2019.

He said: “Two thousand and nineteen promises to be a year of great expectations. A year when, by the grace of God, foundations for the structural transformation of our state will be firmly laid. As one of you, I know of the choices we must make, the hard decisions we must take, and the work we must do to reverse the drift in the interest of our people.

“We are sufficiently motivated, through our understanding of the problems facing our people, and by the grace of God, we shall confront them. The blueprint we are bringing to the table will put Rivers State on the road to prosperity and bring joy back to our people.

“Our state, in 2019, must be placed on a path of growth and economic recovery. To do so, we must resolve to take our destiny in our hands. To get to the next level, we must create the appropriate environment for commerce and industry, as well as investments, to flourish.

“To ensure the redistribution of wealth, our people would have to work with APC. Never again shall we mortgage the future of our state by placing its destiny in the hands of those who seek to provide peanuts in exchange for great deeds. As we celebrate the birth of the New Year, we urge Rivers people to arise. It is time to gird our loins and deal with a reactionary and oppressive system.

“It is also time to dream great dreams, and ensure that those dreams are realised for the benefit of our tomorrow. In the New Year, fellow Rivers people, we must think outside the box for it is only by so doing that we shall end unemployment and underdevelopment, and take our state back from those strangulating it.”

  • Cole, Abdullahi, Nasiru make NLNG Prize shortlist

Three books of the list of 11 released in July have made it to the NLNG final shortlist. The books are Embers by Soji Cole, Death and The King’s Grey Hair by Denja Abdullahi and The Rally by Akanji Nasiru.

The list was approved by the Advisory Board for The Nigeria Prize for Literature, according to a statement signed by NLNG Manager, Communications and Public Affairs, Andy Odeh, at the weekend.

With this year’s edition focusing on Drama, 89 plays were submitted.

Come October, at a public presentation, the winner will go home with the prize worth $100,000.  The prize rotates yearly among four literary genres: prose fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature.

Prof Emeritus Ayo Banjo, who leads the Advisory Board, assured that his board will retain the high literary standards the prize has attained, ensuring that it remains the most prestigious literary prize in Africa. The panel of judges led by a professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan, Matthew Umukoro, expressed delight at the high standard of writing evident in the entries for the competition this year.

Umukoro said all three plays have high literary qualities of effective dialogue, good dramaturgical structure, skilful handling of suspense, and credible characterisation, which have seen them through to this stage of the competition.

Other members of the panel are Mohammed Inuwa Umar-Buratai, professor of Theatre and Performing Arts and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU), Zaria; and Ngozi Udengwu, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Death and The King’s Grey Hair by a literary essayist and National President Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Abdullahi, confronts the issue of perpetuation in power, where rulers, like the king in this drama, employ all sorts of devices to cling on to power, long after he has overstayed their welcome.

Cole’s Embers focuses on life in one of the Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) Camps in Northern Nigeria. The characters gave testimonies of their ugly encounters in Sambisa Forest, as well as their painful discovery of life in the IDP Camp.

A member of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ibadan, Soji Cole, teaches undergraduates play writing at the Department of Theatre Arts.

The Rally by Nasiru addresses the contemporary political theme of youth versus age. Nasiru is a professor of Performing Arts, Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.

This year’s prize has as its International Consultant to the Advisory Board, Jonathan Haynes, professor of English at Long Island University in Brooklyn.

Advisory Board, besides Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo, are Prof. Jerry Agada, former Minister of State for Education, former President Association of Nigerian Authors, and Professor Emeritus, Ben Elugbe, former President Nigerian Academy of Letters and President West-African Linguistic Society (2004-2013).

The Nigeria Prize for Literature has, since 2004, rewarded eminent writers such as Gabriel Okara (co-winner, 2004, poetry), Professor Ezenwa Ohaeto (co-winner, 2004, poetry) for The Dreamer, His Vision; Ahmed Yerima (2005, drama) for his play, Hard Ground;  Mabel Segun (co-winner, 2007, children’s literature) for her collection of short plays Reader’s Theatre; Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo (co-winner, 2007, children’s literature) for her book, My Cousin Sammy; Kaine Agary (2008, prose) for her book Yellow Yellow; Esiaba Irobi (2010, drama) who clinched the prize posthumously with his book Cemetery Road; Adeleke Adeyemi (2011, children’s literature) with his book The Missing Clock; Chika Unigwe (2012, prose), with her novel, On Black Sisters Street; Tade Ipadeola (2013, poetry) with his collection of poems, The Sahara Testaments, Prof. Sam Ukala (2014, drama) with his play, Iredi War; Seasons of Crimson Blossom, Abubakar Adamu Ibrahim (2016, prose); and The Heresiad, Ikeogu Oke (2017, poetry).

  • I didn’t appoint Cole as Rivers APC gov aspirant, says Amaechi

Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State yesterday denied appointment of Chief Executive of Sahara Energy, Tony Cole, as governorship candidate of the party.

The media office of the minister, in a statement yesterday from China where Amaechi is part of the federal government’s delegation, said there was no truth in reports to the effect that Cole has been adopted as Rivers APC governorship candidate.

Rivers Publicity Secretary of APC, Chief Chris Finebone, speaking in Port-Harcourt, also said there was no such development.

Last Thursday stakeholders of APC in Rivers State during the apex leadership caucus meeting in Lagos attended by most of the governorship aspirants endorsed Cole ahead of the primary election later this month.

The meeting was presided over by Amaechi.

A prominent governorship aspirant on APC platform, Senator Magnus Abe (Rivers Southeast), however said he was not aware of the endorsement.

According to him: “I am not aware of any meeting of APC stakeholders in Rivers State that has been held and endorsed anybody.

“I have not known Tonye Cole to be a member of the party (APC). I will vie for the governorship ticket of APC.”

But Amaechi’s media office said: “On official national assignment in China, the attention of the Hon. Minister for Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has been drawn to several wild, misleading, misguided and deliberately distorted stories and claims linking the minister, who is the leader of the APC in Rivers State and the Southsouth zone, to a purported ‘appointment’ of a governorship candidate for the APC in Rivers State for the 2019 governorship election.

“As an individual, a registered voter and a card-carrying APC member from Rivers State, it is the Hon. Minister’s inalienable, constitutionally-enshrined democratic right to back/support/promote any qualified fellow party member of his choice, to aspire to be the candidate of the party in the state in the forthcoming governorship election or any other election.

“As a true and thorough democrat, Amaechi, a foundation member of the APC and a leading light of the party, recognises the party’s candidates for the 2019 general elections will be chosen/elected by party members through the prescribed democratic process in the party’s constitution, rules and regulations.

“It is therefore preposterous, mischievous, wholly and intentionally disingenuous and deceitful for anyone to claim, allege or even insinuate that the Hon. Minister has ‘appointed’ a governorship candidate for APC in Rivers State.”

Finebone also denied Amaechi “appointed” Cole as the governorship candidate for the party for the 2019 election.

He said: “This is grossly preposterous and far from the truth, as there is no provision for appointing a governorship candidate or indeed any candidate whatsoever in the constitution of the APC or in the guidelines for the conduct of primaries of the APC.

“APC in Rivers State is committed strictly to adhering to the process for conduct of primaries for the 2019 elections, in line with the Constitution of the party and guidelines as proposed, ratified and published by the national leadership of the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is hereby stated for the benefit of the media, our members and the general public that a governorship candidate for our party in Rivers State will only emerge during the governorship primary to be held later this month.

“We urge all stakeholders to disregard the misconception being created and promoted in the media.

“Our party leader, Rt. Hon. Amaechi, has not and will not arrogate to himself the extra constitutional powers to appoint a candidate for the party, for any position whatsoever and howsoever, as being wrongly peddled.”

Finebone that Amaechi only had the God-given right to express his preference, just like other members of the party.

  • Indonesia bans Essien, Cole from playing without Permits

Indonesia bans Essien, Cole from playing without Permits

Indonesian authorities on Tuesday banned Michael Essien and Carlton Cole from playing until they get work permits after their new club did not obtain the necessary documents for the ex-English Premier League players.

The two were signed with great fanfare last month by Persib Bandung, one of the country’s best clubs, in a boost for Indonesian football as it seeks to bounce back from a FIFA suspension and launch a new league.

But the government-backed Professional Sports Agency found the players did not have the required work permits.

The club admitted they had not finished processing the paperwork for the pair before they made their debuts in the country’s new top-flight Liga 1 at the weekend.

After calling in the players and Persib’s management for questioning, immigration authorities said on Tuesday the pair would not be able to play until they obtained the permits.

“Today we gave a strong warning to Persib in the form of a letter saying that as long as Persib had not completed the permits, which should be issued by the manpower ministry, we are banning Essien and Cole from playing,” said Maulia Purnamawati, the immigration chief in Bandung, the city where the club is based.

Persib said they would abide by the ban while working to get the permits. Joko Driyono, the secretary general of the country’s football association, said they would help the club in obtaining the documents.

Persib said it had sought to process the paperwork a few days before the stars’ first match on Saturday. The permits were not ready on time, but the football association and league organiser gave them permission to play.

Driyono said the association had granted permission for Persib to field Essien and Cole over the weekend because the process to get the permits was “not easy nor fast”.

Club manager Umuh Muchtar accused the sports agency, which reports to the government and monitors foreign players in the country, of going too far.

“That they are here is a joy for us, they want to raise up Indonesia’s name in the world,” he said.

He added: “Everybody knows that Essien is a world-class player, not an illegal immigrant.”

Essien, who is Ghanaian, has played for Chelsea, AC Milan and Real Madrid. England’s Cole has played for Chelsea and West Ham.

Liga 1 replaces an old top-level league, which was halted in 2015 due to a row between the government and Indonesian FA that triggered turmoil and led to the country being hit with a one-year ban by FIFA.

The new league and big-name signings are a major boost for football in Southeast Asia’s biggest nation, which has faced problems for years.

  • Cole commends Chelsea’s ‘championship performance’

    Cole commends Chelsea’s ‘championship performance’

ASHLEY Cole believes Chelsea’s win at Crystal Palace was a “championship performance”.

Move aside Mourinho: Conte sets new record for Premier League wins

The Blues won 1-0 at Selhurst Park yesterday  thanks to Diego Costa’s 50th Chelsea goal on the stroke of half-time and Cole believes their knack of grinding out results means they could be lifting their fifth Premier League title come the end of the season.

“It was a championship performance,” the former Chelsea left-back said on Sky Sports after the game.

“They didn’t score the goals that we thought but it was a great defensive performance. Everybody worked hard. At the end, they deserved the result.”

Chelsea’s club-record equalling 11th win in a row moves them nine points clear of second-placed Liverpool until Monday night at the earliest, but manager Antonio Conte believes there is still room for improvement in their performances.

“I am pleased for them because they deserve this,” he told the media after Saturday’s match.”I see every single moment, every day. It is commitment, the way we prepare for the game and the way they fight;I am pleased for the fans who are fantastic home and away and who push us.”

In a related development,  Mark Schwarzer has put forward an argument as to why he thinks Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante is the best player in the Premier League.

  • Cole to leave Coventry for Tampa Bay

Cole to leave Coventry for Tampa Bay

Former England midfielder Joe Cole will leave Coventry City at the end of the season to play in the United States.

The 34-year-old, capped 56 times, has signed to play in Florida for North American Soccer League side Tampa Bay Rowdies when his current deal expires.

But he will be playing in the NASL, a level below Major League Soccer (MLS).

Cole left Aston Villa for League One side City on loan in November before completing a short-term free transfer move to the Ricoh Arena in January.

“I’ve always envisaged playing in the United States at some point in my life,” said Cole, whose existing deal at Coventry was until the end of this season.

“My family and I came out to visit a few months ago and everyone was lovely. They really made us feel welcomed.

“I’m really excited. My desire to win football matches is still there. I’m not coming for an extended holiday.”

City boss Tony Mowbray added: “I would have liked to have kept Joe. He’s a fantastic character. No airs and graces, not looking for favours or extra days off and has shown his football ability.

“He has proved his fitness and worth to the team but he’s made his decision for his family, and we wish him well.”

Cole, who scored twice in 22 Coventry appearances, has signed a one-year deal with Tampa with an option for another year, subject to him getting international clearance.

    Cole’s career in English football

After starting his career with West Ham United, Cole won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the League Cup twice after joining Chelsea in 2003.

He was named in the Premier League Team of the Year in 2006, although he endured several significant injury spells in his time at Stamford Bridge.

  • Cole happy to get away from English press

AshleyCole is looking forward to shaking off his “money-grabber” image after moving to Roma from Chelsea.

Cole moved the Serie A runners-up on a two-year deal a fortnight ago, after a trophy-laden eight seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The left-back’s supreme talent has seen him win three Premier League titles and the 2012 UEFA Champions Leagues, as well as seven FA Cup medals – more than any other player.

Cole also made headlines off the pitch in a celebrity marriage to pop star Cheryl Tweedy, while accidentally shooting a work experience student with an air rifle at Chelsea’s training ground and admitting his disgust at being offered £50,000 a week by previous club Arsenal did little to enhance his reputation.

And having grown tired of the negative press in his homeland, Cole is looking forward to a fresh start in Italy.

He told Roma Channel: “I’m not the guy that people think. If you ask my friends and my family they know me as a kind, caring and considerate guy.

“I’ve made mistakes like anyone else but I’m kind of shy and try to keep myself to myself.

“In England it’s kind of hard with the press, it’s different to here but this was another reason why I came here – to get away from that.

“It was kind of jarring in the end that everyone thought of me as a money grabber, cheat or not a nice guy overall which is totally the opposite of what I am.”

Cole rejected offers from MLS in order to join Roma, who finished 17 points behind champions Juventus last term.

  • I wasn’t useful at Chelsea —Cole

New Roma signing Ashley Cole says he was “no longer useful” for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

The veteran left-back fell behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge last season and is now keen to push for glory in Serie A with his new club after making the switch at the end of his contract.

Cole, who has signed a two-year deal with the Giallorossi, told reporters: “I’ve always had a good relationship with Mourinho but the years go by and I was no longer useful for his project at Chelsea.

“At that time my agent told me about Rome and how badly they wanted me for their project [at Roma].

“As soon as I spoke to [coach] Rudi Garcia and I saw how much they wanted me here at Roma, I jumped at the chance.

“I came here to play in the Champions League. Roma is an ambitious club, it’s a challenge for me and I’m prepared to fight for my place. Hopefully we can do something special here next season and win Serie A.”
