Banky W, Hafsat Abiola to speak at Bola Tinubu Colloquium

THE fifth Annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium is to hold on March 28 at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The theme for the colloquium is ‘Beyond Mergers: A National Movement for Change, A New Generation Speaks!’ with Femi Edun as lead presenter.

He will speak on Poverty and the Nigerian State.

Other speakers include, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, who will speak on “The Millennium Development Goals: where are we in the race and how can we go faster?”; Bankole Wellington (Banky W) who will address New Media; Myani Bukar on the issues of Citizenship and Identity; and Kola Oyeneyin on the responsibilities of the older generation to the younger generation in charting a course for change.

The colloquium planning committee headed by Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State said the choice of issues lined up for discussion at the forum were informed by the optimism for the future which the emergence of the All Progressive congress (APC) has engendered in the country.

The development, the committee added has “ also somewhat excited the thought that perhaps this might be an opportunity for a more broad-based movement for true national transformation.

“ This year, the Colloquium seeks to create a platform for encouraging that possibility. Part of the strategy for achieving this is to bring some new and younger voices to the table to interrogate ways by which the political space can be made more inclusive, especially how our increasingly cynical youth can become involved in a national movement to save the Republic.”

The 5th Bola Tinubu Colloquium is in celebration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 61st birthday. The event is to be chaired by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

A key feature of the colloquium is the formal presentation of the “National Movement for Change” (NM4C).

The movement is aimed at mobilizing “ a new generation of voices across the country to actively engage the political space and eventually cause change in the way the country is being governed.”

In demonstration of care for the welfare of ex-players, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Adedapo Lam-Adesina has introduced a forum for all former players of Shooting Stars to meet and interact.

Lam-Adesina said this is part of the present administration in the state’s efforts to improve the welfare of ex-players and to create a forum where they can positively contribute to the development of the club.

The forum, which is first of its kind in the history of the club would cut across all generations of players of the club and will play an advisory role to the club with the aim of tapping from their wealth of experience, and examine the state of their welfare with the aim of rendering assistance where and when necessary.

The commissioner revealed that it is an open invitation to all former players of WNBC, IICC, and now 3SC.

He said: “I am using this medium to call on all former Shooting Stars’ players to come together for the progress of the club; like I said recently, this present administration led by Senator Abiola Ajimobi is concerned with the welfare of our heroes, who, though might no more be active, still have much to contribute to the development of sports in the state.

“We are starting with Shooting Stars by bringing all our former players together for the first time to create an avenue where they can once again contribute to the development of the club with their advice, prayers and ultimately identifying those among them who needs help.”

Lam-Adesina said the present administration in Oyo State would stop at nothing to develop sports and he called on all stakeholders to join hands with the government to restore the state’s lost glory.

Also invited for the forum are the Executive Members of the Shooting Stars Supporters’ Club.

  • Colloquium for Ekwueme at 80

    Colloquium for Ekwueme at 80

An international colloquium with the theme: Nigerian federalism: Building on the Ekwueme legacy, will hold today at ThisDay Dome in Abuja at 10am.

It is among the activities to mark the 80th birthday of Second Republic Vice-President Alex Ekwueme.

The spokesman of the Central Planning Committee, Chief Chyna Iwuanyanwu, explained that the colloquium is the high point of the activities for the former Vice-President’s birthday celebration.

He said Dr Ekwueme is a patriotic Nigerian leader whose place in history cannot be ignored.

Iwuanyanwu hailed the former Vice-President for his role in the design and development of Abuja as the nation’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the Shehu Shagari administration.

The spokesman noted that Dr Ekwueme’s contributions during the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s constitutional conference resulted in the emergence of the six geopolitical zonal structures, the rotation of the Presidency and the other offices.

He said these have now been acclaimed as the panacea for peace, stability and justice.

Iwuanyanwu said: “As we embark on the ongoing constitutional amendment, it is absolutely necessary and timely for us to reflect on the patriotic legacies of Dr. Ekwueme in our search for true federalism, stability, progress and development.”

He said the colloquium would attract eminent political leaders within and outside Nigeria.

Among them are former Nigerian leaders, scholars and intellectual members of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Middle Belt Forum, South-South Assembly, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Afenifere.

Iwuanyanwu said former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd) would chair the colloquium; President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, will be the chief guest of honour; former President Alhaji Shehu Shagari, father of the day; Ralph Uwaechue, President-General of Ohanaeze, the chief host; Senator Bala Mohaammed, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the host and Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, the host governor for this event.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, is the Chairman, Central Planning Committee of the event while Prof Chukwuma Soludo is its Secretary.

A thanksgiving service and a grand reception will hold next Sunday at St. John’s the Divine Church, Oko.

The president of C21, a pan-Igbo socio-political action group, Sen. Annie Okonkwo, has said Dr Alex Ekwueme is the most endowed Vice-President Nigeria has had till date.

The senator was speaking on the ongoing 80th birthday of the former Vice-President.

He said it should be inspiring to Nigerians how the cerebral architect became the nation’s most endowed Vice-President at 47 in 1979, midwifed the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 and has become the most respected political leader in the South.

Okonwko said: “This vintage political technocrat of Igbo extraction and lucid architect of Nigeria’s unity and stability, through his six geopolitical zone prescription, deserves that at the grand age of 80, his nuclear geo–political zone, the Southeast, be given an appreciative embrace of state parity with other zones constitutionally without bickering.”
