Nigeria, Colombia target aviation, trade deals

Nigeria and Columbia are working towards partnership in aviation, trade and cultural exchanges.

These are the highlights of the bilateral meeting between Colombia Vice President Francia Márquez and Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja yesterday.

The South American who is on a three-day visit to Nigeria, met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in company of Shettima after their meeting.

The President assured the Colombia leader that he would implement the agreements that were reached at her meeting with the Vice President.

Mrs Márquez described Nigeria as “the land of our ancestors,” expressing delight at leading Colombia’s delegation on the landmark visit.

She identified aviation, visa facilitation, political consultations, cultural exchange, and trade as priority areas for partnership.

She also highlighted Colombia’s interest in direct flights between both nations and expressed commitment to working with Nigeria to advance social justice, gender equality, and inclusivity.

Márquez praised Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and noted that the African Union’s growing influence on the global stage would bolster cooperation between Latin America and the continent.

The bilateral meeting was attended by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister  of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole and Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim.

Tinubu told the Colombia delegation that global economic realities require nations to look beyond traditional alliances and forge new bonds of cooperation for mutual prosperity.

The President said: “I believe the Vice President and his team have done the job. Our business opportunities with Colombia have already been enhanced. I support every aspect that you have agreed on.

“Particularly for Colombia, the agreement we entered with Brazil can easily be replicated in aviation, and our diplomatic relations can be enhanced. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will accelerate that”.

Nigeria and Brazil opened up air links and trade opportunities during Tinubu’s visit last week.

The President urged Colombian business leaders to seize the vast investment opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, as well as in agriculture.

According to him, Nigeria’s young and expanding population provides not only a huge market but also a capable workforce that can drive industrialisation and economic growth.

Shettima, who co-chaired the Nigeria–Colombia Bilateral Meeting and Business Forum, said the visit by his Colombian counterpart would help rekindle historical ties between Africa and Latin America disrupted by centuries of slavery and colonialism.

  • World Cup: England win 4-3 on penalties

    • FT: Colombia 1-1 England (3-4 on pens)
    • England win WC shoot-out for first time
    • Play Sweden in quarter-finals on Saturday
    • Kane smashes in penalty (57)
    • Mina header in injury-time (90+3)

England have secured a place in the quarter finals after beating Colombia on penalty shoot-outs thrilling fans with thier win after a tense night in Moscow.

Two excellent saves from Jordan Pickford blocked efforts from Uribe and Bacca saw him to end England’s record of spot kick disasters and leave the path clear for Dier to score a winning penalty for the Three Lions.

It followed a tense match in which Yerry Mina scored against Gareth Southgate’s team at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow, during injury time after a goalless first half.

England fans had been relieved when Kane netted his sixth goal and his third from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after he was wrestled to the ground by Carol Sanchez.

It came after Colombia faced defender Santiago Arias being booked early in the second half for raging into the England captain.

Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has been brought on for England as the possibility of a penalty shoot-out to decide the game looms ever closer.

    The Goals

    FT: COLOMBIA 1-1 ENGLAND

Wow. What an end to that game.

Quite how England aren’t celebrating right now, I have no idea.

It all came from Uribe’s quite unbelievable half volley from 30 yards. It looked to be heading in but for Pickford’s fingertip save, and from the resulting corner, disaster struck.

Maguire has been unbeatable at the back for 93 minutes, but Mina rose above him, and saw his header come off the pitch and squeeze above Trippier. Could the Spurs man have done better? Perhaps.

GOAL! COLOMBIA 1-1 ENGLAND (Mina 90+3)

    I don’t believe it.

Gareth Southgate is calling for calm here. What else can he do? This is heartbreak for England.

Cuadrado’s corner comes in after Pickford’s save, and Mina rises so high above Maguire. He heads it down to the ground, and Trippier on the line can’t jump high enough to stop it creeping under the crossbar!

It looks like we’ll have extra-time.

GOAL! COLOMBIA 0-1 ENGLAND (Kane pen, 57)

No mistake! Kane goes down the middle as Ospina goes right!!

Kane had to wait over three minutes to take that, and he looked so calm!

England XI: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Henderson, Alli, Young; Lingard, Sterling; Kane.

Colombia XI: Ospina, Arias, Davinson Sanchez, Mina, Mojica, Sanchez, Barrios, Cuadrado, Quintero, Lerma, Falcao.

    Preview

England face Colombia in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate made sweeping changes to his side for the final group match against Belgium.

And the gamble looks to have paid off as England find themselves on the ‘right side of the draw,’ avoiding Brazil, Belgium and France until the final.

Victory over Colombia would leave England facing a quarter-final against Sweden or Switzerland.Colombia boast a variety of threats – including Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Cuadrado.

    OPTA STATS

    • England are unbeaten against Colombia, having faced them five times previously (W3 D2). Their last encounter dates back to May 2005 in New Jersey. England won 3-2 thanks to a Michael Owen hat-trick
    • England beat Colombia in their only previous World Cup encounter thanks to goals from Darren Anderton and David Beckham (2-0), it was in the group stages of the 1998 tournament. Current England boss Gareth Southgate was an unused sub that night
    • Colombia have reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the third time but it’s the first time they have accomplished it in consecutive tournaments (1990, 2014, 2018). The only previous occasion they’ve gone past the round of 16 was in 2014
  • France win incredible tie with Argentina to reach quarters

    • France 4-3 Argentina (Full Time)
    • Griezmann nets pen (13)
    • Di Maria nets stunning leveller (41)
    • Mercado makes it 1-2 (48)
    • Pavard for 2-2 (58)
    • Mbappe double (64), (68)
    • Aguero nets late (90+2)
    • Last 16 match in Kazan

FT: Those that thought that the World Cup may have already peaked before this – think again! We have witnessed a quite breath-taking football match with twists, turns and world-class goals. France will play either Uruguay or Portgual in the last eight.

Mbappe stole the show with two goals and he also won the opening penalty that Griezmann stuck away. However, Argentina were 2-1 up at one stage with goals from Di Maria (a thunderbolt) and Mercado.

Then France came to the party with a stunning strike from Pavard and Mbappe’s double. Aguero set up a grandstand finish but Argentina and Messi could not find a late equaliser. Good job, too, I would have had fainted. Stunning game.

HT: Wonderful game. France looked in control from the moment Griezmann netted from the spot after a mesmerising run from Mbappe. However, out of nothing, Di Maria scored a magical equaliser from 30 yards. Pure theatre, this. See you in 15.

The first Knock out match in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia is underway as Lionel Messi’s led Argentina files out against France at Kazan Arena, see the preview below.

    ARGENTINA TEAM NEWS

Team to play France: Armani, Rojo, Otamendi, Pavon, Mercado, Tagliafico, Banega, Perez, Mascherano, Messi, Di Maria.

Argentina: No striker in the team with Lionel Messi playing in a false nine. The only change being Cristian Pavon for Gonzalo Higuain.
    FRANCE TEAM NEWS

Team to play Argentina: Lloris, Hernandez, Umtiti, Varane, Pavard, Kante, Pogba, Matudi, Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud

Six changes made from the dismal 0-0 with Denmark. Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante among the players to return. They’ll go at Argentina with a frontline of Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe.

    WHERE ARE WE AT?

The Kazan Arena is the setting for today’s clash – and it’s a fitting stadium for a heavyweight battle.

Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan and is home to 1.2 million people. It was designed by the same firm of architects behind Wembley Stadium and the Emirates Stadium.

France have already experienced the conditions in Kazan as they played their opening Group C game with Australia here.

    ARGENTINA: HOW THEY GOT HERE?

Rating out of 10 so far? A debatable five.

This is not a vintage Argentina team despite having a genius leading their charge. They looked vulnerable against Iceland, were completely disjointed in the defeat to Croatia but did show fighting capabilities to pull a 2-1 win out of the bag against Nigeria. There has been reported unrest in the camp while defensively they are all over the place.

    FRANCE: HOW THEY GOT HERE?

Rating out of 10 for France so far? A solid six I’d say. They haven’t gelled or impressed with their attacking but Didier Deschamps’ team negotiated their way through Group C with seven points and only conceded one goal – a penalty against Australia.

But World Cups aren’t given out in the group stages – are the French coming to the boil or are they a team of individuals? We’ll find out more today.

  • Senegal, last African team crash out of 2018 FIFA World Cup

Yerry Mina’s second-half header sent Colombia into the Round of Sixteen, condemning Senegal, and the whole of Africa out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

The Barcelona defender ensured his side’s progress with a towering second-half header from Juan Quintero’s corner.

Senegal needed a draw to progress, to keep Africa’s hope alive, following Poland’s 1-0 victory over Japan in Volgograd, but they lost the place, conceding six yellow cards as against Japan’s four, after both sides conceded the same goal difference

Colombia had to win to be sure of their progress, but with Poland beating Japan 1-0 in Volgograd, African representation at the World Cup was ended as Senegal failed to secure the point they needed.

Senegal had a first-half penalty ruled out following a VAR review, while Colombia’s key man James Rodriguez was substituted before the break and could be a doubt for the knockout rounds.

M’Baye Niang missed an early opportunity but the opening exchanges were cagey before referee Milorad Mazic awarded Senegal the penalty after 17 minutes.

After consulting VAR, Mazic judged defender Davinson Sanchez to have won the ball before making any contact with Sadio Mane.

Mane’s slip as he took a free-kick in the 64th minute, the Liverpool forward sending the ball wildly off-target, summed up the lack of quality in the match.

The South Americans will face the runners-up from Group G, which will be either England or Belgium, in Moscow on Tuesday, while Japan await the winners in Rostov-on-Don on Monday.

  • Russia 2018: Is this Africa’s time?

    Adeyinka Akintunde

Egypt, returning to the Mundial for the first time since 1990, will be the first African team in action when they confront Uruguay on Friday as the 2018 FIFA World Cup began in Russia on Thursday, 14th June.

The last African match at the World Cup was Algeria’s ouster to Germany at the Round of 16 on June 30, 2014. France had earlier that day sent the Super Eagles of Nigeria packing, falling to two un-replied goals by Paul Pogba and Captain Joseph Yobo, who scored against his own team.

No African country has ever reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup since its first edition in 1930.The pain of 2010 is still fresh on African minds, eight years down the line. With the World Cup party hosted on African soil for the very first time, many thought Africa would emulate Asia, who hosted the mundial for the first time in 2002 and broke their jinx, with South Korea getting to the semi-finals.

And it almost turned out right, with one penalty kick from Ghanaian striker, Asamoah Gyan, separating Ghana and Africa from a semi-final place (after Uruguay’s Luis Suarez had committed a foul, stopping a goal-bound header from Dominic Adiya with his hands, and getting sent-off in the process). But the Ghanaian skipper missed it, and his team lost the resultant penalty shoot-out.

Egypt became the first African team to participate in the World Cup in 1934 in Italy, and bowed out without a win. Africa went on to record its first victory in the FIFA World Cup 44 years later, in 1978, when Tunisia defeated Mexico 3-1.

Morocco advanced to the Round of 16, taking Africa to that stage for the first time in 1986. They had recorded two draws against Poland and England, but went on to beat Portugal 3-1 in the last group match. They would go on to lose 0-1 to West Germany in the second round.

In 1990, Cameroon got to the quarter-finals for the first time, after Roger Milla scored two extra-time goals against Colombia in the Round of 16. The Indomitable Lions would go no further than that, losing 2-3 to England at extra time.

Senegal also got to the semi-finals in 2002, but fell to a golden goal by Turkey in extra time of the quarter-finals match. They had a good outing at the finals which included a shock 1-0 victory over defending champions France in the opening match and a golden-goal win against Sweden in the second round.

Nigeria and Algeria however have the Round of 16 as their best outing so far at the FIFA World Cup, with Algeria falling short to Germany in 2014, and the Super Eagles failing on three attempts in 1994, 1998 and 2014, to qualify for the quarter-finals. They lost to Italy, Denmark and France respectively.

With five teams representing Africa in 2018, one wonders whether luck will shine on Africa, taking the continent to the last four for the first time ever.

There is a possibility of two African countries meeting at the Round of 16 or quarter-finals. Egypt, the most successful national team on the African continent, Morocco, who won every match in their qualifiers without conceding a goal, and Nigeria, who make a sixth appearance at the finals, are in Groups, A, B and D respectively. Tunisia, returnees after their last outing in 2006 and Senegal, who makes their second appearance at the World Cup finals, have their slots in Groups G and H respectively. Given that anything is possible in football, two of these sides can meet in the first two knockout stages, and victory can guarantee a place in the semi-finals for the first time.

It should however be recalled that in 1998, Morocco, Cameroon, South Africa and Nigeria were in Groups A, B, C, and D respectively with only Nigeria advancing to the Round of 16 (following Tunisia’s ouster from Group G).

In 2002, Senegal and South Africa were in Groups A and B respectively, with Cameroon, Nigeria and Tunisia camped in Groups E, F and H. Only Senegal scaled the group stage, and got to the quarter-finals.

In 2006, Cote d’Ivoire and Angola were in Groups C and D respectively. Ghana, Togo and Tunisia were in Groups E, G and H. Only the Black Stars of Ghana made it to the Round of 16, and fell to Brazil.

In 2010, with six African teams in the competition, Ghana alone got to the quarter-finals.

And in 2014, Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire got Groups A and C, and Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria were camped in Groups F, G and H.  The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Desert Foxes of Algeria got to the second round, and crashed out there.

So the arithmetic of a possible meeting based on the group they have found themselves may not visible, seeing that these groups also have the presence Uruguay, Portugal, Spain, Argentina and Belgium.

Africa however hopes luck will shine this time, 88 years after the first edition.

  • Barcelona to host Chapecoense in friendly at Nou Camp in August

Barcelona to host Chapecoense in friendly at Nou Camp in August

Spanish football giants FC Barcelona will host Chapecoense in a friendly on Aug. 7 to pay tribute to those who died when the Brazilian club’s plane crashed last November.

Only three of the club’s players survived the crash on Nov. 29 in the Medellin region of Colombia when 71 of 77 people on board died.

FC Barcelona, in a statement, said the game would help Chapecoense “rebuild institutionally and recover the competitive level it had before the tragedy”.

The winner of the game at the Nou Camp will receive the Joan Gamper Trophy.

The annual invitational game is traditionally where FC Barcelona unveil their team for the new season to home fans.

The crash happened as Chapecoense were travelling to face Colombian side Atletico Nacional in the final match of the Copa Sudamericana.

Defenders Neto and Alan Ruschel, and goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, who had his leg amputated, were among the six survivors, while 19 players and the coaching staff died.

They signed 25 new players this season and promoted nine from the youth team.
