Emmanuel Emogware had joined other football fans at a barbing saloon on Omoru Street, Sedeco area of Enerhen to watch the match on television, and they all seemed to be enjoying it until the 75th minute when Ahmed Musa scored the second goal.

  • Boy, 3, in coma, needs N9m to live

Boy, 3, in coma, needs N9m to live

Three-year-old Caleb Popoola is on a hospital bed at the Paediatric and Child Care unit, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos. He is in coma on a life support machine. Master Caleb’s doctors have diagnosed him with ‘brain tumour’ and he needs N9million to survive.

A letter from LASUTH said Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) done on Caleb showed that he has a large Brainstem glioma with mild hydrocephalus.

His father, Akeem Popoola said Caleb, his first son, had been on a LASUTH hospital bed for three weeks.

He explained that the surgery would be done at Fortis Hospitals Limited in India.

He said: “It would cost N2, 711,250:00 ($7,500), while feeding and accommodation in India would cost N759, 150:00 ($2,100). Air ticket for Caleb would cost about N5million, because we cannot book normal air ticket for him, although we are still looking for something cheaper. He would be travelling on a stretcher; life oxygen and possibly the airline’s medical team would be on board to support him. My wife and I would also be traveling with him and we would need N860, 000 to buy air tickets, because ticket costs N430, 000 per person.”

Popoola noted that since the illness began last June 15, the family has spent about N1.8million on Caleb’s health, including, hospital bills and getting an Indian Visa.

He said the sickness started with Caleb limping on his right leg.

“He could not use his right hand and he was less active in school. We took him to a private hospital but we were told nothing was wrong with him; we later took him to LASUTH and we did all sorts of tests which all came out fine. It was when we did MRI test that we discovered that he had the ailment. We were told that where he had the tumour is very delicate and they cannot play around it. I was at University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), all to no avail. I was told that his case was delicate and he cannot be handled in the hospitals due to lack of facilities. We are to spend a minimum of 42 days in India,” Popoola said.

He added: “We have taken him to various churches including The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Mowe, and Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) for prayers.”

Popoola is appealing for financial assistance for Caleb. Naira donations can be made to Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), account name: Popoola Akeem and account number, 0006748242.

Dollar donations can be paid to Standard Chartered Bank, account name: Popoola Akeem and account number: 0002492351.

Man wrestles robbers after beating wife to coma

A man has foiled a robbery on his Ajegunle, Lagos home through his bravery.

Segun Viho, according to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), fought with the three suspected robbers when they beat up his wife.

One of the suspects, Wasiu Bashir, 22, was arrested through Viho’s bravery. Others fled.

A statement yesterday by RRS said the suspects waylaid Viho at the car park, snatched his documents, phones and N15,000 at gun point before leading him to his flat.

Two of them was said to have threatened to kill Viho in the presence of his children and wife on entering his flat last Tuesday.

Bashir smashed Viho’s head with gun butt and beat up the wife when the family resisted them.

RRS quoted Viho as saying: “When he started beating my wife, I summoned courage to engage him. As soon as we started fighting, his colleague took to his heels.

He too tried to run but I held him and I called out to neighbours, seized his gun and just in the nick of time, RRS officers on patrol arrived and they arrested him”.

Bashir reportedly told RRS: “We know he goes to work early in his car and we decided to ambush him. We were three, Michael and I followed him into his flat to collect more money while Joseph was monitoring the situation outside. The three of us met at a point near boundary in Ajegunle. That is where we plan and set out for our operations. We operate early in the morning and late evening.”

Last Monday, RRS also arrested another armed suspected robber in Ikotun.

Tunde Adedeji, 23 and his 10-man robbery gang invaded Muslim and Omotayo Streets in Ikotun, robbing the occupants of three buildings.

Two of the three buildings are on Muslim Street; the third is on Omotayo Street.

Over 25 victims relived their ordeal to the police when they stormed RRS Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, on learning about the arrest of one of the suspects.

    Many of them were macheted.

The victims, who came to Alausa in three commercial buses, were invited one after the other to identify the suspect and their belongings from the 18 mobile phones, trinkets and assorted jewellery, recovered from his back-pack.

Adedeji reportedly told RRS: “Around midnight, Sadiq, Sule, Ijoba, myself and six others whose names I don’t know met and discussed about the robbery.

I was invited for the operation by Sadiq. We met at Ikotun Egbe. We discussed the plan and at around 2am, we converged on Ikotun Roundabout.

“The arms we used for the operation were cutlasses, wood and sticks. None of us had a gun. We used legs to break doors and took phones, jewellery, laptops from our victims. All the recovered items from me were from the victims. Sule and I were coming from the operation around 4am when a local security man intercepted us.

“We ran away, but, I was later arrested by RRS officials on patrol.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said Bashir has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), office in Ikeja.

Adedeji, she added, was transferred to Ikotun Police Station with the recovered items.

  • Businessman ‘beats’ brother’s wife to coma

A 30-year old man Ojeriahi Victor, yesterday appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly beating his elder brother’s wife to a pulp because she was barren.

Ojeriahi, a business man who lives on Ibefun Street, Alapere is facing a one count charge of assault occasioning harm.

The prosecutor, Mr Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 14 at the complainant’s residence.

Ihiehie said the incident happened shortly after the complainant, a trader, came back from the market around 9pm.

“She looked for the key where her husband normally keeps it for her but did not see it.

“As she was waiting outside for her husband to come back, her brother- in- law came into the compound receiving a call. He walked to where she was standing and pushed her down,” he said.

The prosecutor, a sergeant, said that the accused took the torchlight the complainant was holding and started hitting her face.

“The accused beat her up to a pulp until neighbours came to her rescue,’’ he added.

Ihiehie said that as soon as the complainant’s husband came back and saw what his younger brother had done, he confronted him and was about to beat him up when neighbours stopped him.

He said that the accused narrated to the neighbours that he beat up his sister-in-law because she had refused to give his elder brother a child after five years of marriage.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, who pleaded not guilty to the offence, alleged that the complainant refused to let him into the house when he came back from work.

Magistrate O.S. Amzat granted him N10,000 bail with two sureties and adjourned the matter till July 17.

Policemen beat graduate to coma in Adamawa

    •Lawyer petitions IGP, demands compensation

Policemen attached to the Doubeli police station in Jimeta, Adamawa State, have beaten a polytechnic graduate, Kabiru Ahmed, into a coma.

Kabiru, who is on admission at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, has been unconscious since he was beaten on May 16. The police are threatening to deal with his family and friends.

He has been at the mercy of good Samaritans.

But a lawyer, M.A. Attah, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, demanding justice for Kabiru.

The petition, dated June 17 reads: “Our client’s father informed us that on May 16, his son was in front of their Falluja home, at about 10am, when three men, (one of them later identiied as Inspector Mohammed Bello), arrived on Keke NAPEP and sought to arrest some young men for allegedly indulging in hard drugs.

“In a bid to curtail the commotion that ensued at the scene, our client, who is a member of the community vigilance group, inquired what the problem was and tried to explain to the officers that those arrested were responsible people, but he was arrested and detained.

“The next day, at about 1am, some persons believed to be policemen came to our client’s father’s home and shouted that he should come and receive his son.

“Afraid of the unknown, Mallam Ahmed refused to open the gate. When he later came out, they took Kabiru to Yola Specialist Hospital but he was referred him to the Federal Medical Centre.

“Our client has been in coma since then and unable to move any part of his body. His father was informed by the hospital management that he has a problem with his spinal cord and might not walk again, except if hurriedly operated upon.”

The petition added that Kabiru’s friends, six of them, were harassed and detained for raising the alarm on facebook.

“It is our further belief that as a result of the aforementioned incident, on June 13, policemen from Doubeli police station ambushed six of our client’s friends – Ahmed Vokna, Nibras Mamman, Muhammed Sulei, Abduraham Nasir, Moh’d Kabir, and Umar Baba Ahmed, on their way from the hospital. They were arrested for posting Kabiru’s pictures on facebook.

“Bail was denied them and they were forced to break their fast in the cell; it took important persons from the community to intervene before they were released on June 15, after having being cautioned and instructed to post a contrary statement on facebook and report to the station next day with proof of same.”

Attah asked Arase to probe the brutality meted to Kabiru Ahmed, even as he sought justice for him.

“We hereby demand the following on behalf of our client, within three days:

    • Arranged proper and adequate medical treatment, whether within or outside the country;
    • payment of damages in the like sum of N50 million;
    • to cause an investigation into the incident and bring culprits to justice.”
  • Soldiers beat Dambe athlete to coma

Soldiers beat Dambe athlete to coma

Lagos State Traditional Boxing (Dambe) athlete, Usman Amao yesterday received the beaten of his life in the hands of men on the Nigerian army after he allegedly protested against the decision of the officials after awarding the fight to his opponent from Yobe.

Speaking with SportingLife after the incident, a visibly brutalized Amao said he does not know what he did to warrant such treatment from those that are supposed to be protecting the citizens.

“What happened was that in the first round I had more points than my opponent, the second round, the guy has three points and I have three points. So the officials didn’t tell us what was the result of the last round, they just declared him winner. I now protest to the officials, I didn’t even talk to the Military men, two of them just clamp down on me, started hitting me with gun, the other started kicking my head with his boot, why? I don’t know what I did to deserve such a treatment, are they not supposed to be protecting the citizens? he queried.

However, contrary to Amao’s claim, an official, John Gana who is the coordinator of Dambe sport at the venue, said the men in uniform saved them from being attacked by the athlete, though he could not confirm if he was beaten or not.

“I wouldn’t know if he was beaten or not, because I was concentrating on other matters. I know there was a time Lagos people came to protest against Yobe State. After the winner was declared the boy from Lagos felt aggrieved and started approaching us, using abusive language while the Military men were just sitting behind us here. When he was still coming right at us, the men in uniform just approached him and took him away so that he might not influence others.

“Only God knows what would have happened if he was left alone. He could have vandalized this place but thank God for the intervention of the Army. But whether they punched him or not, that I cannot say,” he noted.

Also an eye witness, who did not want his name in print, said Amao displayed low level of sportsmanship by accusing the match officials of being biased. He said the officials did their best to calm him down but he refused.

“Discipline is very important; I know why they (the protesters) were talking just because he (athlete) is from Lagos. If he is from my state, I will query the boy. The match officials tried to control him but he refused to listen to them. You know how military are, once they say you should stop and you refuse to, they can calm you down by force, that was what happened. Let me tell you, the combination of the officials are not the Hausa people only, there are Yorubas there that are very good in officiating,” he said.

“The military just cornered him though I can’t say whether he was beaten down seriously or not, but I know they cornered him while I was coming out.”
