  • Technology is game changer for comedy, says Adeyinka

Technology is game changer for comedy, says Adeyinka

Ace comedian Gbenga Adeyinka has said for comedians to remain in business and relevant in the future, they must embrace technologies in the production and promotion of their services. He said apart from talent, grit, determination, hard and smart work, comedians must be in tune with time and technology.

Adeyinka, who spoke at a discourse on  Nigerian comedy industry and launch of the third edition of Humour Awards at  Mega Plaza, Victoria Island, Lagos recently, noted that the future of comedy in the country was complicated and very subjective, adding that its biggest existential threat was artificial intelligence.

According to him, technology will keep evolving and comedians must, as a matter of urgency, be in tune with technology..

“But first, let me start by saying that the world is changing and thus comedy is evolving too but is the future bright for the genre? Or is it being diluted amidst all these changes  and a more conscious society with a short attention span? Will comedy be reduced to just one minute on social media? Is that where we are and is that where we are continuously going to be? The division we seem to be seeing in the comedy industry,” he noted.

Adeyinka said that considering the level of creativity, talent and doggedness in Nigeria, it is obvious that the future is bright. ‘So keep with the times and celebrate more voices.  Of course, comedy has to be updated. You must not rely on what worked before and we must push the genre further.

“Don’t look at what someone else is doing, look for new outlets, look for new platforms. Look for new opportunities, look for new platforms that are growing to be on social media.”

He described skit-making as an integral part of comedy, and they have come to stay. To him, it is a delight to every lover of the art of comedy because you have more avenues for the art of talent.

Projecting into the future, Adeyinka said in the next 10 years, comedy would be more media-driven. He, therefore, urged comedians to incorporate things people can see into their art. “There’ll be a thin line between the local comedian, the national comedian and the international comedian.”

Actor and content creator Adebowale Adedayo aka Macaroni said the rivalry or division in the industry is natural and not peculiar to comedians alone. He stressed that the comedy industry as a space is wide enough to accommodate fresh entrants into the sector, noting that every comedian owes himself the duty to be responsible.

He maintained that comedy would continue to grow as the revolution in content creation attracted patronage of brands. He described passion and consistency as key factors behind the growth of comedy.

“Content creation is a money spinning venture but you must love it in order to convince others to love it,” he said.

The Revolution, organisers of the Humour Awards, used the occasion to unveil the theme and nominees of the 2023 edition of the awards.

With the unveiling of this year’s edition’s theme ’Nothing is Impossible, the organisers of the awards ceremony demonstrated their commitment to developing the comedy industry and putting Nigerian comedy on the global map.

The Convener of the event, Uche Dominion said Nigeria has witnessed a comedy revolution that has taken the entertainment industry by storm.

“I have been part of comedy from the days of sitcoms, stand up and content creation. This can be attributed to skitmakers – individuals who create and share short comedy videos on various social media platforms. These skit makers have not only captured the attention of millions of Nigerians but have gained international recognition for their unique style of humour and storytelling.

“One of the key factors contributing to the growing influence of skit makers is the accessibility and widespread use of social media platforms in Nigeria. Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok have provided a space for these talented individuals to showcase their comic skills and reach a vast audience. Through these platforms, skit makers have been able to connect with fans, gain followers, and even collaborate with established celebrities and brands. These new genres of comedians have to create engaging and funny content to capture an average social media user. They also highlight trending topics and create skits with life lessons”, he noted.

Present at the event were Yinka Adebayo, General Manager Mega Plaza, Amaka Obinna, General Manager Sales and Marketing Mega Plaza Mr Irfan Vayani,  Kennyblaq, Taooma among others..

  • KENNY BLAQ: Punches past the poor economy with ‘Oxymoron’

Kenny Blaq is a house hold name in the comedy section of the entertainment industry. In this interview with OLADIMEJI ADEWALE and BELLO ADEFEMI, he opens up on the thrills and challenges of being one of the youngest stand-up comedians in Nigeria.

ARGUABLY the most popular stand-up comic out of Nigeria in the last couple of years, Otolorin Kehinde Peter has carved a niche for himself in the industry. His unique style of infusing popular music and satire into his performances earned him the most sought-after spot in comedy. When asked how he discovered his style, he says: “I’ve always been the songbird of the family and community. Whenever everyone else sang popular songs, I found myself singing them the wrong way with joy… Sometime in 2008, people around me suggested that I do comedy with singing. I can’t even crack regular jokes on stage.”

Kenny never wanted to do comedy, he always wanted to be a musician but as fate would have it, he’s a musical comedian. He admits that in the beginning, he tried so hard to look the funny part to push his new found craft by wearing funny colour combinations and sunglass frames (without lenses). This continued until 2010 when he had to, according to him, “wear a suit” to anchor a wedding where he was paid N3,000. At that point, he knew he had to get serious about his craft.

On breaking into the mainstream, he recounts a story of how recommendations got him this far.

“I had been going for events at the MUSON Centre, been on comedians’ platforms until one day I went to Ibadan for Gbenga Adeyinka’s for ‘Laff Mattaz’; apparently, I wasn’t supposed to perform at the event. When the invited people didn’t show up, I was added to the line-up. My performance evoked a standing ovation for the first time. After the event, I met with Ali Baba and he gave me his contact. A couple of years later, they did January 1st event and they said they were looking for me that day, but I didn’t have money to get to the event. I can say the Ibadan event gave birth to me performing at Ali Baba’s January 1st event and many others like AY live, Yaw’s Salanga and doing other comedy shows led to other events.”

His popularity and the energy he brings to the stage hasn’t always brought ease to his profession. Kenny Blaq is mostly headliner and as such, the final act at most events and he sees it as both a blessing and a curse.

“At the level I am at the industry some event planners use me to end shows. I’m called upon when the event is ending and the audience are tired of laughing, so I tend to do extra work to make the audience laugh again. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed, other times it’s great to see my pieces being appreciated. At times like these, my professionalism sets in. I fall back to the drawing board, try to manage time and thrill the audience.”

Being around Kenny Blaq can be distracting even for the most experienced journalist, he switches between being serious and being a comedian pretty easily that he was asked if he’s planning to get on the Nollywood bandwagon like his progenitors.

“Yeah, I really want to do movies. Soon I will be appearing in movies, but only in movies that matter. I’m a huge Jamie Foxx fan. I don’t want to be in all movies, only movies that matter. I will like to do a musical movie like Tyler Perry’s movies. I haven’t seen scripts that motivate me yet, I want movies that’ll be known for the truth.”

His M.A.D. (Making A Difference) band members were at his apartment when we got there and preparations for the day’s rehearsals were underway and Kenny Blaq had this to say about organising events in Nigeria: “Organising events in this country is crazy. From renting the hall, to ticketing and rehearsals, if one is not careful, one can run mad. I really challenged myself with the first Oxymoron. Instead of starting with a smaller hall at Eko Hotel, I used the main event hall. Motivational speakers can push you into trouble saying “if he can do it, you can too”. I went with that until reality dawned on me; it is not about just saying it but putting to test my faith and real hard-work on the part of the team. My major issue was trying to convince sponsors for this year’s event as most of them had invested in the just concluded World Cup in Russia. We’ll have a great show regardless, thanks to the sponsors we were able to get.”

We probed further about what to expect at his forthcoming sequel happening on July 29 at the same venue, he invites us to experience it because his description wouldn’t do justice.

Earlier in the year, Kenny reacted to a question about his romance life and his response was “Being a comedian, it is difficult to get someone who loves me.” When asked if that was an excuse, he said: “I wasn’t in any dating relationship before getting into the entertainment industry. The reason being that no one thought I was a serious person. My funny characteristics didn’t allow me to be a date material. Now, people don’t see Otolorin Kehinde, rather they see Kenny Blaq. I’m not in any relationship, except with God.”

The current economic hardship in the country is also a big concern to Kenny Blaq and he’s lending his voice alongside other comedians in trying to ease the stress of the populace through humour. He thinks the government should do more to aid the entertainment industry.

“We should have companies or government bodies that sponsor entertainment shows. Like BOVI said, ‘comedy is stronger than politics’. Politics is boring without entertainment, leave it or take it. If the politician wants to catch fun they need entertainers. Nigeria government needs to invest in entertainment. Because entertainment is what strengthens Nigerians, Nigerians are our own jokes.  We make jokes out of serious issues, things we should be angry about, we wrap jokes around them. Thanks to the comedy clubs coming up now, if you are stressed and upset about the economic situation, you can drive to comedy clubs and laugh away the stress.”

When we asked if he had gotten his Permanent Voter Card, he smiles and confirms that he has, but admits he doesn’t know who he’ll vote for just yet. Again we revisit his career and how he intends to compete on the global stage acknowledging the fact that he’s had a number of shows in the U.K. and the U.S. He’s excited about the prospect saying:

“Yes oh! Recently, I have been writing more jokes in English. In our country when you speak too much of English, you rarely connect, you still need to balance it with the local dialect (pidgin). I have been trying to imagine myself performing for a white and if I need to do that I have to develop content relating to the white people. It would not mean I’d be changing my narrative from being a Nigerian, but as a Nigerian bringing Africa to America.”

He’s preparing to leave for an appointment, so in a hurry we ask what his advice to other young comedians who are trying to catch a break in the industry is. His advice is simple: “Pray and work hard at your craft.”

  • Another comedy from Yahaya Bello

Sir:  For a state government that sees and treats the civil service as a burden rather than as engine room for economic growth and development, hosting an economic summit while the civil servants wallow in severe hunger and abject poverty has further shown that common sense is lacking in Lugard House, Lokoja. The idea of convening an economic summit would have been a welcome development but the prevailing atmosphere in the state had already made the aims and objectives of the summit dead on arrival.

Leadership is key to achieving economic growth and a vibrant and productive civil service, not some dumb economic summit. Has anyone wondered why the kind and level of commitment and productivity shown by workers in the private sector especially banks is not seen at the states or federal civil service? It’s because there’s no leadership at the states and federal government. Government killed the civil service just to make it easy to loot public fund and millions of economic summits wouldn’t fix the rot, but a carefully thought out application of common sense which entails training and retraining, setting targets, frequent financial audits, workers’ motivation and leadership by example.

The civil service remains what the leaders want it to be, a redundant and unproductive channel through which public funds can be siphoned. The civil service is a tool and an engine room for any sensible government to use effectively to attain economic growth and development. A case study is Lagos State that has turned its civil service into an asset to transform and turn around the economic fortune of that state.

What sense does it make to convene an economic summit when the civil service that will be the tool and engine room to achieve and implement the outcome of such a summit remains untrained, unmotivated and seen as a liability? Civil servants of other states have received their January salaries and already waiting for February alerts from banks, Kogi civil servants are not sure yet whether they will receive a dime even in the next three months. We have a state government that would rather convene an economic summit than pay civil servants their January salaries and pensioners their allowances.

Sadly, what prevails in our dear state is we have a governor who deliberately surrounds himself with daft and dumb appointees who have nothing to benefit Kogi State than further ruin it. Governor Yahaya Bello has shown and proved beyond reasonable doubt that he isn’t only reckless in his utterances but also in financial management; or how does one explain a government whose major achievement is decamping rallies across the state when his contemporaries are doing things worthwhile? The fact that nothing tangible could be displayed even after receiving bailouts #1 & #2 and Paris loan refunds #1& #2; not even an up to date payment of salaries and allowance of pension is a pointer to the fact that this administration has failed woefully. Truth is, the present government in Kogi has got nothing to show for its over two years stay in office other than the re-commissioning of projects and programmes that were already completed and commissioned by past administrations.

  • Recycling of jokes major challenge of the comedy industry – Baba de Baba

Recycling of jokes major challenge of the comedy industry – Baba de Baba

The major challenge facing the comedy sector is that several comedians are fond of repeating and recycling jokes created by others at functions rather than being creative and original.

Chidi Uzoma, popularly known as “Baba De Baba’’, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that many contemporary comedians had become lazy.

They only feast on the sweat of others instead of putting on their own thinking caps on how to excel in the profession, Baba de Baba said.

This copyright infringement had become the norm among the loafing comedians and had made several fans lose track of the real creators of many jokes, he said.

The comedian said that such `stolen’ jokes becomes trite and stale due to over flogging by the lazy ones among them.

“Fans also lose trends of the originators of particular jokes after many comedians must have turned them into their swan songs,’’ he said.

Baba de Baba said that it was always painful to him whenever he observed that many comedians were not creative but only interested in copying others jokes.

“The entertainment business is too expensive to maintain; so stakeholders should always go for exclusivity that will differentiate and distinguish them from the crowd.

“ So if you sit down to create a joke for your audience and another commend relates same at another platform it becomes boring and stale.

“Our fans will not appreciate those things; we should be able to tell who owns a joke,’’ he said.

The comedian noted that because of lack of creativity by comedians in the industry, most members of the public used to regard them as “never do well” people in the past.

“And parents were not encouraging their children to venture into the industry; but now; the reverse is the case.

“Since the educated ones have started coming into the fold, things have begun to change for the better but there is still room for improvement,’’ he said.

The comedian advised the inventors of jokes to always protect them from being stolen by the lazy ones.

According to Uzoma, his jokes are inspired by God and happenings in the society, saying, “I joined the industry because I hate seeing people angry.

“I do reasonable and informed jokes and I have over 50 videos and two audio CDs that run on television stations and the social media’’.

He said that the video CDs were a collection of his performances on “Standup Nigeria’’ comedy.

“It was titled “Baba De Baba in Standup Nigeria’’ while the audio is a Comedy Quake with Baba De Baba’’, and it has parts 1 and 2,’’ he said.

Uzoma said that the sector had been helping him to make ends meet.

“I am making small money pending when I will blow’’.

NAN reports that Uzoma was a computer science graduate from the Ile-Ife Polytechnic before venturing into comedy.

He has over 20 awards from Nigeria and abroad to his credit.

  • Music, comedy, tributes as Wilson Badejo clocks 70

Music, comedy, tributes as Wilson Badejo clocks 70

Stepping into the septuagenarian stage, Rev Wilson Adebogun  Badejo,  did not only dance physically to fiesta of praise songs, his inner man, no doubt, was jazzing literally to the outpouring of encomiums from fans at the occasion.

The celebration of the former General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria and founder/chairman of Wilson Badejo Foundation, at the Banquet Hall of Oriental Hotel, Lagos, recently, was a lesson woven in fanfare. And his old friends: one, from his previous farming business and former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, and former Information Minister, Professor Jerry Gana, were among the high profile guests who spoke about his exceptional qualities.

It was also a night of music and comedy with Demola, a stand-up comedian and Bayo Adesuyi who led the music ministration, but the message for society development, which the celebrant is known for was not lost in the merriment, as Bakare, who described the septuagenarian as a mentor and man of many parts, spoke on the theme: “The cure for extreme poverty and corruption in Nigeria.”

The lecture was not before a welcome address by Senior Pastor of Four Square Gospel Church, Asokoro, Abuja, Rev. Babajide Olowodola, and remarks by Obasanjo, who said he met the celebrant “in a ‘lowly profession’ of rearing chickens.”

Obasanjo who was chairman of the occasion, recalled that he had just left his throne as Nigerian military head of state, and Badejo, a veterinary doctor, was on hand to put him through the poultry business.

Obasanjo disclosed that their friendship spanned the transition of Badejo into a Church Minister, the period of his (Obasanjo) incarceration and demise of his ‘oppressor’, describing the celebrant as a man of God whose vicious prayers saw him through the dark times.

In his lecture at the occasion, Pastor Bakare noted that, “greed, not need, was the cause of corruption in the country.’

The cleric averred that corruption proceeded poverty and the two scourges feed off each other, adding that greed as against need leads to corruption.

He said: “How else does one explain the mysterious billions of naira, millions of dollars and thousands of pounds being unearthed in bizarre locations, including a soak-away pit, an empty apartment, and a cemetery? I understand from budget analyst that the monies traced to the former head of a parastatal could found major hydro and solar power projects, construct major roads and still purchase hundred units of 11kv transformers. That these funds were found idle in their hideouts indicates that they were diverted not to meet the need of the diverters but to serve their greed.”

He added that aside the fact that corruption denies citizens access to resources and opportunities, it encourages laziness, discourages culture of diligence and professionalism.

According to the cleric, seven of the top most violent countries in the world in 2016 were among the top 10 most corrupt countries that year, adding that corruption is closely associated with poverty, failing educational institutions, low standard of living and violence.

Acting president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who sent a congratulatory message to Badejo, described him as a man who has worked and still works diligently in spreading the gospel to various corners of the country and across the world. He also commended the foresight and large-heartedness of the former General Overseer in instituting the Wilson Badejo Foundation, which caters for the poor and vulnerable, amplifying his regular message that the church remains the last hope of the downtrodden.

As he clocks 70, the acting president believes Rev. Badejo’s zeal for serving God will be rekindled, recommending his attributes of self-discipline, unwavering commitment to the truth and love for the poor to younger and upcoming ministers of God and all Nigerians alike.

A documentary at the occasion showed that from his National Youth Service days as resident veterinary doctor at the Obudu Cattle Ranch of Agric Development Corporation, till the point he joined National Veterinary Research Institute, Jos, as research officer, Badejo has always exhibited high level of professionalism. And with a post-graduate degree in Management from the University of Connecticut, Starr, U.S.A, it didn’t take long before he came to limelight.

During his tenure as the General Overseer, the Barley Harvest Project was adopted for the church-planting programme of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria. The project involved mega city church planting and strategic engagement of the unreached; over 1, 000 churches were planted in four years. By the end of his tenure in 2009, about 2, 000 churches were planted.

In acknowledgement and appreciation of the grace and call of God in his life, Dr. Badejo and his wife Adeyinka, on May 19, 2007, established the Wilson Badejo Foundation (WBF), a non-profit organisation aims at ensuring that, as much as possible, that no Nigerian citizen is shut out of the nation’s economic system. It provides educational opportunities for indigent citizens in the higher institutions of learning, as well as ensures that no Nigerian citizen sleeps hungry without a meal a day. The organisation also interfaces with the government and other well-meaning Nigerians to empower youth for employment via vocational training and skill acquisition. Over the years, many Nigerians have benefited from the Foundation’s Medical Outreach, which involves free tests, free medication and spiritual counseling.

The gala night was wrapped with the official launch of a book: ‘My Spiritual Odyssey’ – Memoir of Wilson Badejo, with a special toast by Prof. Gana. The former minister of Information described the celebrant as a true friend.

  • Kunle Afolayan’s new comedy film, ‘Omugwo’ premieres with pomp

Kunle Afolayan’s new comedy film, ‘Omugwo’ premieres with pomp

After a series of breathtaking premieres with his pan-African movie, ‘The CEO’, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan pooled another glamorous crowd on Wednesday, with a special screening of his new comedy film, ‘Omugwo’, starring Ayo Adesanya, Patience Ozokwor, Omowunmi Dada, Ken Erics, and Christian Paul among others.

Present at the private screening which held at Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, Lagos, are representatives of Bank of Industry, sponsors of the movie, Africa Magic; distribution company, Silverbird Distribution; and stakeholders in the film industry such as the Founder/CEO of Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), Ms. Chioma Ude; filmmaker and former Chairman of Audio-Visual Rights Society of Nigeria (AVRS), Mr. Mahmood Ali-Balogun; filmmaker Chris Ekejimbe; foremost actress, Kate Henshaw; film entrepreneur, Mr. Seun Shoyinka; actors Yomi Fash-Lanso and Funsho Adeolu as well as cast members of the movie – Omowunmi Dada, Ayo Adesanya and Henry Alabi, aka Old Skool.

Addressing guests shortly before the screening of the movie, Afolayan noted that ‘Omugwo’ is an Africa Magic-commissioned film in partnership with his company, Golden Effects Productions. “We were commissioned to do three films,” he said, “and this is one of them. After this, we are going to unveil ‘Roti’ and ‘Tribunal’.”

He said he is particularly excited about the film “because it’s meant to be a small-budget television drama, but by the time you see it, you may want to ask what differentiates a low budget film from a high budget film, because this is just like any of Kunle Afolayan’s productions.”

According to the filmmaker, the film is a slight departure from his usual style of story-telling, going by its comic nature. “It’s a comedy. Because people perceive most of my works as being serious, so I had this watered down. This film is releasing this Friday and this is the first public screening.”

Written by Kemi Adesoye, ‘Omugwo’ tells the story of Omotunde, a young civil engineer, married to Raymond, an OAP who have just had a baby. Coloured by their different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law forcefully move in with the couple to perform the Igbo childcare rite called Omugwo. But instead of relieving their children of the burden of childcare, the mothers’ rivalry complicates life for the young couple to comical effects.

In this highly inspiring film, Afolayan marries a serious subject matter of motherhood with lots of hilarious moments. An ‘edutainment’ movie, ‘Omugwo’ portrays two characteristics of motherhood and gives kudos to the African tradition, while on the other hand, it attempts to prefer solution to some of the challenges  faced by young couples especially after the arrival of their first child. Ozorkwo and Adesanya leave viewers with catchy phrases that follow the viewers home and help the story to linger on.

Afolayan used the opportunity of the premiere to introduce his new client, Tecno Mobile, a company he said he will be doing a lot more with, going forward.

This is adding to his list of such companies as Air France, Adron Homes, and Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), among others that he represents as brand ambassador.

Present at the launch were members of Nigeria’s comedy community including Ali Baba, Koffi, Saka, Nedu, Ushbebe, Emmaohmygod, Senator, Etinosa, Longmancomedian, MCShakara, Stillringing, Mark Angel, Monica Friday, Wofaifada, Josh2funny, Ebiye, Deeone, Bellokreb, Romeowj.
