  • Alumni rehabilitate alma mater

    They met for the first time in 30 years after graduating from the famous Command Secondary School, Ipaja, one of the post-primary military schools in Lagos State.

    Any wonder members of the 1987 set of the old students were excited when they met at their 30th re-union anniversary.

    Addressing the audience, the Chairman, re-union anniversary planning committee, Sesan Obe, said the get-together was aimed at considering ways the old students could give back to their Alma mater.

    He said: “It’s good we consider ways of giving back to our Alma mater. It is a good thing that we should not forget our source. That is why the 1987 set had taken up the initiative to embark on significant projects in the school. Also we are coming together to give special gratitude to God for keeping us till date.

    “Understandably, we have gone through different stages of life over the years. Our thoughts, instincts and values have been remodelled. We use the opportunity to re-unite, reconnect and blossom.”

    Earlier, Chairman of the 1987 alumni association, John Owolabi, said “the old students are coming together after 30 years of separation to re-unite and reminisce on the lovely years we spent together in Command and continue to champion projects in the school as a way of giving back to an institution that moulded us.”

    One of the high points of the forum was the awards presentation to some of the old teachers. The 1987 Commandant of the school, the late Colonel Lawrence Lawal, was one of the beneficiaries. His widow, Mrs. Modupe Lawal received the posthumous award.

    The alumni rehabilitated some of the school’s facilities which were destroyed by rain storm. Obe said: “The 1987 set rebuilt the school’s volley ball court and the school’s pavilion which was destroyed by rain storm which also blew off the roof of the school’s classroom.

    He urged well-meaning individuals in the society and the state government to rehabilitate roads within the school premises to ease movement.

    THE 1987 set of of Command Secondary School, Ipaja, Lagos has rehabilitated some of the school’s facilities which were recently destroyed by rain storm.

    Members of the set, who met past and present teachers last weekend during their 30th Reunion Anniversary, pledged to continue giving back to their alma mater.

    According to the Reunion Anniversary Planning Committee Chairman, Sesan Obe, the forum was designed to chart  ways for alumni to give back to the school.

    He said: “It’s in a good light that we give back to our alma mater. It is a good thing that we should not forget our source. That is why the 1987 set Commandos have taken it as our duty to embark on significant projects in the school. Also we are coming together like this to give special gratitude to God for keeping us till date.”

    Kaduna: Police restore calm after residents protest

    The Kaduna State Police Command on Friday said normalcy has been restored after residents protest the killing of a youth by a soldier at the Command Secondary School, Kaduna.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abdulrahman Ahmed said a vehicle of the joint security outfit Òperation Yaki’ was burnt by the irate youths who trooped to the street demanding justice.

    “The situation is now very calm,” Ahmed told newsmen in his office, adding that the roads earlier blocked by the youths have been cleared and were now motorable.

    The DCP disclosed that the body of the deceased had been taken to the mortuary, as the investigation continues.

    Meanwhile, the 1 Division, Nigerian Army, confirmed that its soldier had fired on some youths suspected to have encroached into the school and one of them was hit and died on the spot.

    “The matter is being investigated and details will be made available as they become available.

    “The General Officer Commanding appeals to law abiding citizens to remain calm and go about their daily lawful duties,” a statement signed by the Division’s Spokesman, Col. Kingsley Umoh said.

    Army vows to fish out killers of colonel in Ibadan

    The Nigerian Army has vowed to track down killers of the erstwhile Commandant, Command Secondary School, Apata, Ibadan, Col. Anthony Okeyim.

    In a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Relations, Col. Timothy Antigha, for 2 Division yesterday, the army said it would do everything possible to fish out Okeyim killers as it works in conjunction with the police and the Department of State Services.

    The division assured that the joint investigation “would not be concluded until the perpetrators of the crime are identified and brought to justice.”

    The division also revealed that the autopsy conducted on the deceased showed that the late senior officer died as a result of intracranial pressure arising from fracture of the skull.

    The division said: “Any other stories connected with this case that is being spread by certain faceless individuals are false, diversionary and   aimed at derailing the ongoing investigation.”

    Col. Okeyim was murdered in the premises of Command Secondary School Apata Ibadan on December 12, last year. The division in conjunction with the Oyo State Police Command and the Department of State Services in Oyo State commenced investigation into the incident.

    Col. Antigha said the investigation was still ongoing, adding that appreciable progress has been made.

  • Command School, Jos alumni celebrates three generals

    As the Alumni of Command Secondary School Jos celebrates three of their own-two Navy Commodores and a Major-General of the Nigerian Army, the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro has called for more support towards the education sector.Moro said there is need for individuals, groups and corporate bodies to complement governments effort in addressing infrastructural decay in the sector.

    The Minister spoke at the Night of the red necks organised by the alumni for commodores Tariworio Dick, Christian Ezekobe and Brigadier-General Imomotimi Birigeni in Abuja.

    Moro said: “When I was a teacher and a union official, I still had that feeling of utopia in me that with government, everything can be done. But as my metamorphosis continued, I am gradually coming to terms with reality that there are limitations in what government can do.

    “And for our society today, the greatest challenge we face is decay of critical infrastructure in our land and I think its part of the problem my commandant is grappling with in the school.”

    The Minister who described the gathering as an electrifying bond added that the group has played a significant role in the society. He added that the event was meant to celebrate greatness and honour those that deserve it while alive.

    In his remarks, Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa urged the alumni to give back to the school.

    Maikasuwa said: “Little act of love can make monumental impacts in the school. Command Jos will have its own share of infrastructure deficit after this year to the rest, the school may need your assistance.”

    While praising the celebrants, he urged members of the alumni to setup an endowment fund for their alma mater. Maikasuwa, who was represented by his deputy, Chief Olumuyiwa Adejoko, praised the school for its academic excellence and disciplinary antecedents.

    Teachers rewarded include; Dr, A. F Awodeji (Mathematics), Mr Chukwudi Ukwuegwu (English), Elder George Igboanugo (English and History Teacher) and the present Comptroller of Prisons, Ebonyi State, Mr Columbus Omenuko.
