I am diagnosed  to have chronic hepatitis B infection. My results read;  HBsAg  +ve,  HBe Ag  -ve  HBs Ab-ve, HBe Ab +ve, normal liver function test in April and  I am on Livolin. I don ‘t have yellow eyes,or dark colored urine. What can I do to know if I am not at risk of liver cancer ? Can I stop the Livolin?

Please try always to  give  your age, sex,  occupation and country when making enquiries on health matters

Your  hepatitis B serology results  can be explained; HBsAg  +ve  shows current infection with the virus   whereas HBe Ag-ve  means  you do not currently  have active infection . On the other hand  HBe Ab +ve means   that the virus is present but not active . Though one may be tempted to think that you have  just chronic hepatitis as you have been told,    acute on chronic  hepatitis B   may build up  gradually  from this kind of  situation,   but because  this  impression is not in line with  your current  clinical status my humble opinion is that you  go to another Medical  lab so we can compare.  What about your wife or partner?  Hepatitis B is  sexually transmitted. Could  there be a reservoir  where you are being re infected ?

Livolin is not the main treatment for hepatitis B infection . Rather, it is a liver support drug  that in terms of pharmacology is not entirely different from multivitamins; the treatment for that condition is a drug that is given once every month  until  lab tests show  zero  copies of the virus in your body.  You can not stop the Livolin, just like that for several reasons;  even when you  have laboratory(virological)evidence of cure,  damaged liver cells(hepatocytes have to be given time to be removed and replaced.   The end result of untreated  or poorly treated cases of hepatitis B is liver cancer , and you should avoid going  down that path where  cancer becomes an inevitable outcome. Stop Alcohol if you drink. Stop smoking, and eat less meat  but  more vegetables and fruits . Take out time for bed rest

•I read your article on Ebola virus where you said we should avoid bush meat

First of all, it is not my portion, I will not surfer this disease, but I will continue to eat bush meat.  We were all bred and brought  with bush meat, my father  ,all of them. People die only when their times  have come.  Any where we find it we destroy it our own traditional way What of all the  hunters  who don’t get sick Thank you for your work all the same

What ever may be your religious background or level of education, it is important to stress that  no  Nigerian has yet been diagnosed of  the  disease , but that does not mean it is not there . Genetic polymorphism at different levels may  protect some people  in the rain  forest regions  of the world including Nigeria .We are talking about something you can not and will never see with the unaided eyes. It is so small that even the  common microscope can not see it. It is one of the reasons it is not possible to diagnose the infection in many countries because it requires  the use of diagnostic equipment beyond the reach of many resource poor countries.  Let me also correct the wrong interpretation you  seem to have made. I did not say you can not eat  bush meat.  When meat is cooked properly all the bacteria and viruses are likely to perish.  I only specified that  whereas the host  for Ebola virus has been  identified to be the fruit bat,  different forms of the virus have been  discovered in other  animals like chimpanzees and  monkeys.  Interactions  at various levels with the body fluids  such as faces, urine , blood and saliva of popular bush animals as Antelope, Porcupine,  Pigs and Rats will from common sense predispose them to infection and this is particularly high when outbreaks such as is being currently experienced occurs.  Enjoy your self but know the risks ; there is no cure ; the virus kills  60-90% of the people it infects  . Whoever comes in contact with the person infected  from the time of infection through death and burial may also become a victim of the virus.  The purpose of health education is to create awareness and hope that awareness translates to knowledge so that when you are infected, you will at that moment  present yourself to the nearest Health center for further action.

•I went out with a woman for just six months in 1997 and we decided to call it quits  because of many problems.  She had told me then that she was carrying three months pregnancy which to me was not possible. She came to me with a male child two weeks ago  with members of her family . I need your advice about blood test

In the first place my humble advice is to  act  softly and be careful the way you  talk about going to  the Police, court  and what ever.  You need  a high level of emotional intelligence  in this matter; the child in question  will grow and become somebody  and you can not at the moment predict what God has in store for him . He should never have the intrapsychic conflict of  knowing you are  actually  being forced to accept paternity especially if it turns out he is your biological child . Women only know the true biological fathers of their kids and from the way the woman is going about it she seems pretty sure you  are the father of this boy. The only reliable test  to know if  indeed he is your biological son is DNA analysis . There is a centre in Lagos where this is done.  I understand they do  a confirmatory test ,but additional confirmation can be done overseas if you have the money.

    ‘Gudevenig Sir Dr Mike

Please I need your advice and guidance . I have this problem of quick ejaculation so what is the problem . What is the remedy ?

Response .- Remedy is simple ; STOP trying to  do macho  .Why hurry? Stay in her and simply  relax; talk about sex as you do ;what she likes about it how she wants it ,anything  usual for  two souls united in peace, love and harmony,  straight and for legally married couples . Avoid being adventurous or wanting to please, when you don’t even know if she likes it that way .  Additional info  provided via e mail

•I am a regular reader of your column

When ever I urinate or have sex with my husby, I discover blood when cleaning my body. What drug should I take

I would not  make a dash for drugs if I were you.   First thing is to stop Postinor (LNG) if you are using it.  Next have lab tests done; urinalysis,  test for schistosomiasis  and  then have intracervical swab  sent for culture, followed by cervical smear /pelvic ultrasound scan. We  look  at  these  very carefully  and  then know whether we need additional tests

•Is it true that   garlic alcohol, aloe and  ginger can protect the stomack against Ebola virus

Response.  To my knowledge,  that is not correct. For now, there are no known vaccines or curative drugs.

  • Sharks vs Enyimba saga: Ogunbote’s comments not inciting — Abaje

Sharks vs Enyimba saga: Ogunbote’s comments not inciting — Abaje

The management of Sharks FC of Port-Harcourt has rubbished media reports attributed to the media officer of Enyimba FC, Farriel Allaputa, alleging that the Blues Angels’ technical adviser Gbenga Ogunbote’s comments during the Glo-NPFL Week 11 encounter is capable of inciting fans to become violent.

Allaputa also accused accused Ogunbote of crying foul after the match officials gave Enyimba one point on a platter of gold.

The management, in a statement signed by the media officer of the club Peter Abaje, described Allaputa’s accusation as mind boggling.

“I have heard coaches and even the chairman of Enyimba Felix Anyasi Agwu complain of how they were robbed on the field of play by the men in black but in the case of Sharks Football Club this is the third time out of six games at home this season that the team has scored valid goals that were ruled out.

“First, it was against sister club Dolphins. Ibrahim Ajani scored a brilliant goal that was cancelled by the men in black, next was Pyagbara Christian who scored his second of the day against Nasarawa United and the same thing happened and now Enyimba and you expect the coach not to complain about the level of officiating against his team. I must state here that the complaints have become necessary because it is gradually becoming the norm against us at home and I believe this is not what the League Management Company bargained for,” Abaje said.

“Allaputa said two penalties were awarded to Sharks against El Kanemi Warriors.   I am sure he is not aware the coach of El Kanemi Warriors did not complain about the penalties because they were justified. He blamed his defenders at the back line for the blunders that led to the penalties. Enyimba’s media officer should understand that no coach in the local scene or anywhere in the world complains about officiating when his team is beaten squarely but they do when the match officials make the game unfair to them.

“The least I expected Allaputa to do was to say thank you to the match officials for disallowing Sharks second goal, giving enyimba an offside goal and a point back to Aba rather than accusing a coach for complaining about how his team was robbed of victory,” Abaje said.

“Followers of the game know that coach Gbenga Ogunbote is a thorough professional coach who hardly complains about match officials and over the years has been known to be a coach who minds his business and a vanguard of peace and not violence as Allaputa is trying to paint him. Maybe Enyimba fc takes delight in bias officiating so that the league will continue to produce misfit champions at the end of the season and if that is the scenario Sharks fc will not be a party to such system.

“For the ugly incident that happened where an Enyimba fan was stabbed after the match we condemn it and on our part we will continue to ask questions as to what led to the incident even though there is the possibility that the visitors instigated the crisis just to slow us down.  I must praise Farriel Allaputa for at least stating the obvious that the incident took place outside the stadium and once again we state that Sharks supporters and fans will not and cannot carry out such barbaric act on another fan.”

  • Lawmakers slam Ladoja for comments

    Lawmakers slam Ladoja for comments

Members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have criticised former Governor Rashidi Ladoja for his comments on the urban renewal programme of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration.

In a national newspaper, Ladoja said the programme lacked a human face.

At plenary yesterday, Mr. Yisau Adesope (Orelope) and Mr. Adesina Adeyemo described Ladoja’s statement as “ridiculous” and “inciteful”.

Adesope said the Accord leader cannot compare the present administration with his because Ajimobi is not demolishing markets but illegal structures.

He said: “The traders are trading in illegal places and the government has provided alternative trading areas for them. The governor should be praised by the opposition and not condemned. Ladoja should be a partner in progress and should not be seen as playing dirty politics.

“I am surprised that Ladoja could make such an unguarded statement because he has close to three commissioners in this administration. He cannot be benefiting from us and condemning our government. It will be better for him to keep mute and be a partner in progress or withdraw his men from this administration.”

Adeyemo said the demolition was not to witch-hunt anybody but to remove structures obstructing the water ways.

  • More knocks for Akinjide over comments

A  group, the Asiwaju Grassroots Foundation (AGF), has condemned the comments of the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ms. Jumoke Akinjide, that the Oyo State Government has personalised relief materials meant for rainstorm victims.

In a statement, AGF Coordinator Alhaji Folawiyo Bello said the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Accord, if not checked, are capable of disrupting the peace in the state.

He said the role of the opposition in any democracy is to keep the government on its toes and not to sponsor malicious publications or incite the people into violence.

Bello said: “The governor does not want the materials to fall into the wrong hands, but Ms. Akinjide raised a false alarm when she saw that the distribution would not be done the PDP way.

“Rather than resort to cheap blackmail, the opposition should stop identifying with the populace only in times of crises.”

A chieftain of the Action Congress Nigeria (ACN) in Oyo State, Alhaji Abass Oloko, warned Ms. Akinjide against causing crisis with her “unguarded” statements.

Oloko urged the minister to support Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who “is achieving feats that the PDP was unable to achieve”.

He urged the people to continue to support the Ajimobi administration.

  • Jonathan’s shocking comments after visit to Police College, Lagos

Jonathan’s shocking comments after visit to Police College, Lagos

After Channels Television broadcast the incredible rot that has overtaken the premier police training facility in Nigeria, the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, an enraged President Goodluck Jonathan paid a flying visit to the institution. Reports indicate he was deeply moved by the sorry state of the facility. However, the reaction of the president to the rot must have truly baffled every Nigerian. Rather than wonder how the rot escaped the attention of the government and police authorities for so long, or even marvel at the incompetence of senior police officers in allowing the rot to graduate to that magnitude, the president turned his rage on the people he suspected connived at the television documentary. In his view, the broadcast was meant to embarrass his government. This president is truly baffling.

According to newspapers, the president paid an unscheduled visit to the police training college. And after he toured the college’s decrepit facilities, he asked the flustered commandant of the college, Police Commissioner I.F.Yerima, three questions. Read the account of this newspaper: As the president made to enter his car, he suddenly paused and faced CP Yerima to ask him a few questions. Then came the first question for the College Commandant: How was Channels TV able to penetrate and record the mess without detection? The CP had no answer.

The second question followed: When was the recording done. Again there was no answer.

The Commandant turned to his deputy and other senior officers to assist him in answering the President’s questions, but none was able to help him out.

The President then quipped: “This is a calculated attempt to damage the image of the government, as the college is not the only training institution in the country.”

He soon entered his car and left.

It does not require clairvoyance to know that the presidency will wield the big axe. As far as the trainee policemen are concerned, as long as the situation is remedied, they couldn’t care less whose head was taken to the guillotine. But given the rot in the police facility, quite like most barracks have fallen into near disuse, is it any wonder that on graduation the law enforcement agencies, particularly the police which had complained bitterly of neglect, adopt brutal and unfeeling methods in tackling crime and suspects? In all, let us hope that the president’s anger would spur him into taking measures to renovate police training facilities all over the country rather than punishing those he feels are complicit in the television broadcast.

  • Oyelese slams Ladoja for comments

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Elder Wole Oyelese, has urged the party’s national leadership to conduct fresh primaries from the ward to state levels.

Oyelese accused former Governor Rashidi Ladoja of insulting members in an interview published by a national newspaper last week.

He said for someone who became a governor on the PDP’s platform, Ladoja’s description of the party as a “casino” was an insult.

In a statement entitled: “Don’t prove Ladoja right on Oyo PDP”, Oyelese said: “Not a few concerned members of Oyo PDP felt insulted by Ladoja’s description of the PDP as a ‘casino’ on the front page exclusive interview he recently granted a national newspaper.

“For a party that gave him relevance in Nigerian politics, one should castigate Ladoja for the uncharitable action of casting such aspersion on the PDP. However, a close look at the way the state PDP crisis is being handled by the national body may eventually lend some credence to Ladoja’s vituperation, as insulting and bitter as it may be.

“It is therefore imperative that urgent steps be taken to right the wrongs and save the party in Oyo State. It is currently being circulated by some individuals that there is a party executive in Oyo State, which is recognised by the National Executive and this kind of false propaganda is not healthy for the party in a volatile state as ours.

“The sad fact is that there are three different executives in Oyo PDP and none can be described as legal. This kind of position is not good for the PDP at a time when members are defecting out of frustration and other parties are ganging up to fight us.

“Some individuals are creating an ugly impression out of the inability of the National Working Committee (NWC) to attend the reconciliation meeting on December 18.

“Those of us who know the national officials well enough know them as men of high integrity, who cannot be compromised. To reposition Oyo PDP, I urge the National Executive to urgently organise fresh party congresses from the ward to the state level. Anything short of this cannot work and delay is dangerous.”

  • ACN chieftain berates don over comments on judiciary

ACN chieftain berates don over comments on judiciary

A chietain of Edo State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN), Mr. Kenneth Amana has berated a University of Benin don, Professor Tony Afejuku for attempting to denigrate the judiciary and forcing his views on it, when the judicial process instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer in the July 14, 2012 election, Rtd Gen. Charles Airhiavbere is still pending.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Benin City, Amana said Afejuku was trying to intimidate the judiciary. He said as a columnist with The Nigerian Tribune, Afejuku had titled a piece: Edo Election Tribunal and Nigeria’s Judiciary-less Judiciary, in which he deviated from scholarly issues to those he has no knowledge or competence in, saying this was regrettable.

Amana said while he would not join issues with Afejuku or trade insults with him, it must be stated unequivocally that the falsehood, misrepresentations and the maligning of the state governor shall not go unreplied.

“If men of good conscience fold their arms and watch the ugly and nefarious agenda of anti democratic forces in the state, there is the likelihood of institutional failure and thereby slowing the governor’s pace of work.

“The people of the state is hereby put on notice that some person have perfected plans against their collective mandate given to the governor during the election. Since they were rejected at the polls by the people of Edo, they advanced to embarrass the peoples choice by raising issues such as certificate forgery and educational qualification.

“They went ahead to the courts to see how they could secure black market injunctions before the elections and after. Sensing the integrity of the judiciary and their possible failure, they went to the Tribunal to challenge the best election ever conducted in the history of Nigeria in any state. Not stopping at nothing, they recruited some fifth columnists to denigrate the judiciary.

“I have no doubt that the governor would overcome this dastardly plans. I also believe that tough times do not last but tough people do, Oshiomhole needs our collective support and prayers, if he must succeed with his developmental agenda in his second term in office”.

Airhiavbere had approached the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal challenging Oshiomhole’s academic qualifications as well as his victory in the election. But on September 27, the tribunal struck out Airhiavbere’s case against Oshiomhole’s qualification for the election and assumed jurisdiction on the case against alleged corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Besides, Airhiavbere has gone to the Court of Appeal to express his dissatisfaction with the decision of the tribunal striking out the aspect of his petition contesting Oshiomhole’s academic qualifications.

It would be recalled that the tribunal had ruled that it was not vested with the powers to hear the issue of qualification of candidates, as that was within the competence of the Federal High Court. And that the issue of qualification was a pre-election matter and the petitioner should have gone to the Federal High Court and if there was any merit in the allegation, the court would have disqualified the candidate from contesting the election.
