  • Commercial driver held for allegedly stealing Evans’ exhibits

    A 27-year-old commercial driver, Mashudu Rabiu, yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly stealing three articulated vehicle carcases recovered from notorious kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans.

    The police charged Rabiu, whose residential address was not provided, with two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Raphael Donny alleged that the defendant conspired with others at large, and stole three trailer carcases valued at N10. 5 million, which were recovered by the police as exhibits from the kidnap kingpin.

    Donny said the defendant committed the offence on December 10 last year at 3am at Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

    He said the defendant conspired with the guard and stole the carcases.

    The defendant, he alleged, was arrested in Katsina and brought back to Lagos to face his charges.

    The offence, he said, contravened sections 287 and 411 of the 2015 (Revised) Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Chief Magistrate B. O. Osunsemi admitted the defendant to N2 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

    Osunsemi added that they must live within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case till March 23.

    Wuse Market Mayhem: No life lost, says Police

    A commercial driver was allegedly shot by members of the FCT Joint Task Force Wednesday in Abuja.

    The situation, which resulted to a riot by drivers around the market caused panic and unrest.

    The FCT Police Command has however said no one was killed in the riot adding that no one was injured in the incident.

    The police in a statement by the Command Spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah also said normalcy has been restored to the area adding that hoodlums who were trying to take advantage of the situation have been arrested.

    The statement reads: “The FCT Police Command wishes to assure members of the Public that normalcy has been restored at Wuse and its environs following a misunderstanding that broke out between operatives of the Directorate of Road Transport Services (VIO) Taskforce and cab operators close to Wuse market.

    “While the Command reiterates its commitment to protect lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, members of the public are advised to always follow the right channel in expressing their grievances instead of resorting to self-help and causing damage to property.”

    On the killing, Manzah explained: “Contrary to speculations making the rounds, members of the public should note that no life was lost nor was anybody injured from the fracas and the situation has been brought under control.

    “It is also pertinent to state that some hoodlums who were trying to take advantage of the false rumour to cause problem in FCT have been arrested and investigation is in progress.”

    The Command assured residents to go about their lawful businesses as adequate security measures has been deployed to protect lives and property in the territory.

    Commercial driver almost killed me, says FRSC Commander

    Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Mr Hyginus Omeje yesterday spoke of how a commercial driver nearly crushed him in order to evade arrest.

    Omeje told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident happened on Tuesday in Costain, Iponri, Lagos, when he tried to arrest an over-loaded bus.

    Omeje said: “I sighted the commercial bus on Eko Bridge, seriously overloaded with goods and passengers. The loading was so hazardous that I could not overlook it.

    ‘’We took the picture and I decided to drive down Costain where I know it would be safe for him to stop without causing obstructions or endangering life.

    “When I came down with my orderly, I flagged the driver down for him to stop, he refused, rather, he faced me with the vehicle in an attempt to run me down. I was nearly killed by the driver.

    “The situation later resorted to dangerous driving in a zig-zag manner, it was then I called the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to join us in following him.”

    Omeje said it took the combined efforts of two RRS teams around Nigerian Brewery and Orile to get the driver.

    On being stopped, he said the driver refused to tender his licence and particulars.

    Omeje said the case has been transferred to Iponri Police Station.

    Commercial driver kills banker

    A-46-year old Sterling Bank employee, Mr Daniel Olugbenga Adebayo, was killed last Tuesday morning by a commercial bus on his way to office at Dalemo Bus Stop, along Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, Sango Ota, Ogun State.

    The deceased, a father of four was allegedly crushed, according to an eyewitness around 5.30am on that fateful day by a hit and run driver while trying to cross the expressway.

    The eyewitness told The Nation that the commercial bus with registration number FKJ-352 XN, was coming from Sango-Ota rammed to him where he was standing at an effort to overtake a LAGBUS which was picking passengers on the road and in the process, crushed the victim to death.

    He said “When the incident happened, we all rushed to the scene of the accident to rescue him but on getting there, the man has died immediately.

    “Then, we started contacting his relatives through the phone numbers we found on the diary he was holding.

    “We parked his remains out of the highway and guided it with some tyres for incoming vehicles not to matched on him.

    According to his widow, Mrs Rekiat Temitope Adebayo, the driver of the  commercial bus, absconded but later reported himself at the Sango-Ota Police Station, saying that the LAGBUS that caused the accident also ran away while nobody was able to pick the code or registration number.

    The deceased has since been buried in his residence.

    Late Adebayo said she never knew how and her children would cope, noting that her husband is so loving and caring. Adding that, he never joke with his family, that he was a man that goes to extra length to keep his family, ‘oga mo ti gbe oooo’, she said in bad mood.

    His burial attracted huge crowd from the community, as they said his goodness, loving and caring will be a great loss to the community.

    The Iyana Ipaja Branch’s Manager of the Sterling Bank where the deceased served until his death, Mrs Nike Adetula, described his death as shocking.

    She said the deceased is so gentle and punctual on duty.

    Adetula, prayed to God to console his wife, children and family members and grant him eternal rest.

    The Zone II Commander, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Commander Adekunle Ajibade, when contacted described the incident, as unfortunate and great loss to the family and the community at large.

    He consoled with the family and prayed that God gives them the fortitude to bear the loss.

    Ajibade, urged the motorists to always maintain discipline while on the road to guaranteed safety of lives and properties.
