  • Jonathan withdraws Oyo INEC commissioner-nominee

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday withdrew the nomination of Prof Akinola Muritala Salau as a National Electoral Commissioner.

The withdrawal letter on the nomination, dated 21 March, 2013, was read yesterday on the floor of the Senate by Senate President David Mark.

The President said Salau’s replacement, who would have represented Oyo State in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would be sent to the Senate.

Entitled, Re: Confirmation of appointment of a National Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the letter reads: “I write with respect to my letter of March 14, 2013, on the above stated subject and wish to notify the Distinguished Senate that emergent circumstances have necessitated the withdrawal of the nomination of Prof Akinola Muritala Salau of Oyo State as a National Electoral Commissioner.

  • Edo commissioner-nominee writes test

A commissioner-nominee, Anena Jemitola, was yesterday subjected to a rigorous reading and spelling test during her screening by the Edo State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Rules, Business and Government.

She was asked to read a section of the 1999 Constitution and spell Philip Shaibu and Edo State House of Assembly.

Ms Jemitola was the only nominee made to face thorough screening as others were merely asked to take a bow and go.

The lawmakers made her take the test after they argued that the basic constitutional requirement to be appointed was the ability to read and write.

They quoted a section of the fifth schedule in response to a petitioner, Jimoh Lawal, who asked that Ms Jemitola should not be cleared for the post.

Lawal, who presented his petition to the committee, said there were discrepancies in what was contained in Ms Jemitola’s curriculum vitae and the results presented.

The petitioner described the results presented by Ms Jemitola as mere “testimonials and worthless papers.”

He opined that there was no examination body that conducted exam with the heading General Certificate of Examination but General Certificate of Education exam conducted by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).

The Committee Chairman, Philip Shaibu, said they were guided by the constitutional provision and that they lacked the power to investigate the alleged certificate forgery claim.

He said: “She has the minimum requirement to occupy the office.

If your issues are based on forgery, it is another matter.”

But Lawal interjected: “There is no primary school certificate before the lawmakers and I have proven a case of dishonesty.”

Shaibu, however, said they would investigate the results and would not present the report of the screening during plenary session.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole has sent the name of Aihamwa Eregie to the lawmakers for screening and confirmation as a commissioner.

The Speaker, Uyi Igbe, who read the letter during plenary, told Eregie to present 30 copies of his CV to the screening committee.
