  • Lagos by-election: Low turnout based on poor awareness-INEC

Lagos by-election: Low turnout based on poor awareness-INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday blamed the low turnout of voters for the Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency by-election in Lagos to poor awareness.

The election resulted from the death of Mr Elijah Adewale, who represented the constituency in the House of Representatives.

Adewale died in Abuja on July 20.

Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama, Supervisory Resident Electoral Commissioner
for the Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency By-election, made the observation in an interview with journalists during the election.
He said that although the commission did its best to create awareness on the exercise, awareness of by-election generally in the country was low.

”Actually, awareness of by-election in Nigeria is low because people don’t know much about it.

”It may also be because political parties did not carry out enough campaigns, but generally, the conduct has been peaceful, ” he said.

The commissioner said that poll officers and materials got to polling units in time.

Also speaking to journalists during a routine inspection to the polling units, Mr Fatai Owoseni, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, said that the low turnout was because political parties and their candidates did not carry out adequate campaigns.

”INEC will not go and bring voters out to vote. The parties did not campaign enough for this by-election. Out of six political parties, only about two printed posters.

”Adequate campaigning was not done. So the people did not really know who they are voting for, ” he said.

Owoseni confirmed that the electoral process had been without any violence.

”It is almost 2p.m. It has been peaceful, and I am advising the contestants to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship – election is just like a football game. There must be a winner,” Owoseni said,

The Administrative Secretary of the commission in Lagos State, Mr Clement Oha, said: “We have been going round; we have visited 90 per cent of the polling units so far.

” I will say I am very impressed except that the turnout is very low. The process is peaceful.

”Our card readers are working 100 per cent; we have not got any complaint whatsoever”.

On the low turnout, Oha said that INEC did its best to sensitise the people in the constituency.

”We went round the nooks and crannies of the constituency for two days to create awareness; so, we cannot explain why people did not turn up.

”But generally, I am impressed with the whole process and the conduct of voters and parties.
“There is no violence, thuggery, ballot box snatching. All our registration area centres are in top form and ready for collation, ”Oha said.

Mr Babatope Akinyele, the PDP candidate for the election, said that inadequate campaigns caused the voter apathy.

NAN reports that voting had been concluded in most polling units and voting points at Iju, Fagba, Ogba as at the time of this reports, while counting had started.

Wike, Police commissioner trade words over alleged rigging plot

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and Commissioner of Police Francis Odesanya have traded words over an alleged plot to rig the December 10 legislative rerun.

Wike said he would release audio -visual footages of the Rivers State Police Commissioner plotting with politicians  on the  methods to be adopted for the planned rigging of the December 10 rerun elections.

But Odesanya told The Nation that Wike was only playing politics with his claim.

Wike spoke while‎ flagging off the rehabilitation of the General Hospital, Abonnema in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area on Monday.

The governor noted that the audio-visual footages will be made public through different media platforms  to expose the extreme rigging desires of the Independent National Electoral Commission  ( INEC) with the backing of the police and other security agencies .

He noted that   the 600 policemen  working with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad  (SARS ) in the state , the police commissioner  has already distributed them to prominent APC  leaders  on a local government  basis for the indiscriminate arrests of PDP  supporters  few days to the election .

The governor  added that the 600 SARS  personnel distributed would also be used to unleash unprecedented  violence on the people on election day , “so that APC  leaders  would have  time to substitute  results sheets handed over  to  them by the INEC leadership”.

He said: “We are now in possession of the DVD of how the Police Commissioner and some politicians were planning on how to rig the forthcoming Legislative re-run elections in Rivers State.  At the appropriate time, we shall release the materials for Nigerians to understand the depth of the Electoral fraud being perpetrated by  INEC and Police.

“For the security of this all important audio-visual material, we have mass produced them and kept them at different locations.  Nigerians are entitled to know the truth about the unfortunate rigging machine.”

The governor explained further that,  “Now that we have  caught them on tape, this will shake the world. Rivers State is not like other states where you can plot and execute easy rigging plans.

“We are ahead of them by 50 steps. If they take one step, we take 50. On behalf of  our people , we shall  continue  to  monitor these persons who are trying to steal the  mandate  of our people”.

Odesanya said he was waiting for Wike to release the footages.‎

He said: “It is all politics, let him make his evidence public; last time he said I withdrew his security personnel which is not true, I am waiting when the video would be release, them, I will respond.”

Shiites, Police clash: IG justifies Kano killings

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris on Tuesday justified the clash between the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) (aka Shi’ites) and the police in Kano State on Monday.

Eight members of the Shi’ites and one policeman were reportedly killed during the clash.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf had told reporters on Monday that four policemen and many Shi’ites members were also injured during the clash on Kano-Zaria road.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the launching of the 2017 Armed Forces Emblem Fund at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Idris said that the police has the responsibility to maintain law and order in every part of the country.

He said: “Obviously from time to time, we have been experiencing upheavals from this set of people. As police officers, we have responsibility to ensure there is law and order and when you have people taking over the whole country, dominating streets and buildings, we have to come in to maintain sanity in those areas.

“As of early yesterday, we got information that they were trying to block Kano to Zaria road. They later assembled in large numbers and our officers were deployed to the place to ensure freedom of movement of ordinary Nigerians.

“They attacked our officers, killed one of our officers one has sustained an arrow wound on his head and obviously in such a situation, police have the responsilitity to ensure free movement of people on the road. And that was what our officers did,” he said.

On the fear that if the trend is not checked, the group will become like Boko Haram, he said: “Obviously, it is. Whether now or whenever, as police officers we have a responsibility to ensure there is law and order in any part of this country and to ensure that no organization or individual should constitute themselves into a government, block passages and buildings.

Asked if it was not wrong to unnecessarily kill any Nigerian in the process of quelling riot, he said: “I agree with what you said, but when you have Nigerians armed to the teeth, killing police officers, I don’t think it happens anywhere. I think as Nigerians, we have to appreciate, when you appreciate a dangerous situation, and to be sympathetic with the police that are being killed by some of these miscreants.

According to him, it was wrong to worship on the highway or block the road under any guise.

He said: “What happens is that there is nothing like freedom there. When you worship, you go to mosques or churches. Blocking highways and passages doesn’t constitute part of worship.

“My message to Nigerians is that all of us would be our brother’s keepers. We should appreciate the feeling of others that where your right ends, another person’s right begins.

“Every Nigerian has a right that must be protected. We should ensure we protect the rights of every individuals: right of freedom, right of association and right of movement.” He stated
