The Rivers police yesterday confirmed the kidnap of the mother of Commissioner for Information Dr Austin Tam-George.

Police spokesman Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said at 6:16 pm. yesterday: “Emerging facts indicated that the abducted woman in Okrika is the mother of the Rivers State Commissioner of Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George.”

But the command and Tam-George initially disagreed on his mother’s kidnap.

Ahmad earlier said: “There was a reported kidnap case of a woman at Okrika, but she is not the mother of Austin Tam-George. Efforts are on to safely rescue the victim.”

The commissioner said his mother was kidnapped around 8.55 p.m. on Saturday, on her way from church at Giogioma-Okrika.

Tam-George said: “I am pleading with the abductors to release my mother unhurt. My mother is a harmless woman. My mother, Patience, is 85-year-old. My mother cannot hurt anyone. She went to church, as she had done for years, to pray and worship God.”

Investigation showed that the kidnappers contacted the family of the victim and demanded ransom, but the exact amount could not be ascertained.

    Edo Commissioner denies embezzling N1bn

Edo State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon Abdul Oroh, has denied allegations that he embezzled the sum of one billion naira when he was the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

The money was reportedly meant for financial support to Association of Libya Returnees who were trained by the Edo Agriculture Development Programme.

Head of the group, Solomon Okoduwa, had alleged in a television programme that the money was released after the training programme but that it was shared among top government functionaries under Oroh.

Oroh in a press statement issued to journalists Friday said no money was approved by the state government for such project.

He stated that the state government decided to rehabilitate and reintegrate the Libya returnees into the society by training them on modern farming skills to enable the, become self reliant.

According to him, “The allegations that the State Government released one billion naira, which never happened, is not only callous, mischievous, senseless and a calculated attempt to smear my hard earned reputation.”

“Okoduwa and his cohorts have been inundating me with series of requests and frivolous demands. I have refused to join issues with these street urchins, whose stock in trade is to act the script of their paymaster.”

Ex-Lagos commissioner’s grandson kidnapped in school

Grandson of immediate past Lagos State Commissioner for Rural Development Cornelius Ojelabi has been kidnapped.

Michael Oluwatomiyin Ojelabi, four, was kidnapped in front of his school by an unidentified woman six days ago.

His distraught parents are hopeful that he will return home.

In tears, they said they had not received any phone call about his whereabouts.

Sympathisers have been trooping to the Ojelabis’ Iyana School residence in Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the state.

Members of their church held prayers for the boy’s return yesterday.

The boy’s father, Sunday Ojelabi, told The Nation that Michael and his sister, Oyindamola, were standing at their school gate, waiting for their mother, when the woman, who gave her name as Aunt Joy, said she was asked to bring them home.

“I was shocked when my eight-year-old daughter told me her class teacher asked her to sweep her classroom. The teacher denied but three of my daughter’s friends said it was true. It was when she finished sweeping she took her brother to the school gate. Oyindamola told me that when they got to the gate, the woman, whom she described as tall, fat and dark-skinned, said my wife asked her to pick them. My daughter said she wasn’t going to release her brother but the woman asked her to inform her class teacher she had taken Michael. When she got back, they were nowhere to be found.

“She went home to inform my wife and when they returned to the scene, shop owners said they saw the woman on a motorcycle but they didn’t know she was a kidnapper. We went to Ojo police station. We have been searching for him. I believe we will find him by God’s grace because I suspect nobody,” he said.

Ojelabi said when he got the information, he reported the case to Adoff Police Station. He has also written a statement at the Ojo Police Station.

He said: “My wife is a trader and she takes them to school every morning. The reason she was late to pick them on that day was because she was preparing their lunch. She didn’t want them to return home without having anything to eat.”

When asked his last moment with his son that day, Ojelabi said: “I was getting dressed for work when he came to my room and said ‘daddy, good morning’. I replied ‘good morning’ and said I was off to work. He is my close paddy. I miss him these past few days because he was always awake whenever I returned from work. I keep thinking of my son’s condition. I keep thinking if he will be given his favourite biscuit and tea. We have been living in this environment for over 16 years and we have never witnessed incidents as this.”

Michael’s mother, Mrs Elizabeth Ojelabi, was said to have gone to the church.

The school’s head teacher, Olalekan Kazeem, said he was still in shock adding that the class teacher said she never asked Oyindamola to sweep.

“We are security conscious here because I remember there was a time their father was not allowed to take his children because he wasn’t a familiar face in the school. I pray we find him because that is our joy,” he said.

The Ojelabis are pleading with the public for information on their boy’s whereabouts.

  • Taking of hard drugs is suicidal, commissioner tells youths

Taking of hard drugs is suicidal, commissioner tells youths

Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Princess Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf has advised youths to shun hard drugs.

She gave the advice yesterday at the maiden National Youth Summit on Drugs/Substance Abuse Prevention, held at Bible Guest House in Palm Grove, Lagos.

Mrs Akinbile-Yussuf said: “Drug abuse and illicit trafficking are the primary reasons why many youths are incarcerated. By so doing, they become major perpetrators of crime as a result of mental disorders.

“The increasing number of youths in prisons over the last few years is due to their involvement in drugs. As a matter of fact, majority of them were arrested and convicted, while many have drug abuse problems.

“Your continuous involvement in drug abuse and illicit trafficking is like committing suicide, killing your family dream, destroying community and communal togetherness, and by extension, destroying your generation. The money from drug trafficking will not last but bring shame, disgrace and untimely death.”

The commissioner said government had introduced some school activities to channel the energy of youths towards profitable ventures.

“Our ministry has constructed youth centres and playgrounds across the state for various youth empowerment and recreational activities. We also collaborate with other ministries to promote information and education on the dangers inherent in the abuse and illicit trafficking of drugs,” she said.

Mrs Akinbile-Yussuf solicited for community support to government‘s efforts to yield results.

“Community support will help to prevent, treat, rehabilitate and accept those addicted to substances. This effort will boost war on drug trafficking as declared by the Federal Government using various agencies like the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) among others.”
