    Local govt inaugurates committees

The Chairman of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area, Alhaji Owolabi Yisa has inaugurated two committees.

The committees are: Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management, Security and Traffic management.

The chairman urged members to be committed to their assignment.

Yisa said his administration was working tirelessly to provide social amenities for the residents. He said the council had embarked on some projects with Federal and State governments such as new block of classrooms at Okun-Ajah and Olomu Primary School, construction of a laboratory at Ogombo with water source, rehabilitation of Owode Public Health Centre, replacement of entire P.V.C ceiling and to mention a few.

Speaking on behalf of the committees, Mrs. Rukayat Omotayo, thanked the chairman for the opportunity given to them and promised that would live up to expectation.

The council chief warned that his administration would not condone indiscriminate dumping of refuse along Median Badore Road. He advised residents of the council to be sanitation conscious, as this can hinder the affective work of LAWMA. Rather, refuse should be dumped at the designated point of collection.

According to the council boss, the newly inaugurated committees are to work in conjunction with the LAWMA officials, environmental officers and workers ofthe council.

The chairman stated that apart from the monthly, weekly environmental exercise declared by the state government, there is going to be a daily environmental clean-up within Eti-Osa and its environs.

He thanked the council manager Mrs. Sanyaolu A.L. for all the efforts she is making to see that Eti-Osa East is dirt free.

Alhaji Yisa urged the residents to pay their taxes promptly and that payment should only be made at the designated banks as written on the bills, saying that cash payment should not be made to any of the council staff.

Dignitaries at the event include the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) leader in Eti-Osa East L.C.D.A Alhaji Bashorun Apampa, party loyalists, community leaders and host of others.

•Heads of Service to head local governments

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday implemented the resolution of the House of Assembly, which dissolved transition committees in the 18 local government councils.

He directed the Heads of Service in the various councils to take over the management of the local government secretariats.

At a meeting with the former transition committee chairmen and Heads of Service at the Government House, Oshiomhole said the Assembly’s resolution was in the best interest of the state.

He said the Heads of Service are there to ensure that workers salary are paid and not to run the councils as sole administrators.

Oshiomhole said: “I invited you to brief you about a recent development. You are aware of the resolution passed by the Assembly as regards the tenure of the local government transition committees.

“We have considered the resolution, which has since been sent to my office, and are satisfied that it was done in good faith and in the best interest of our state.

“Accordingly, we have resolved to accept the dissolution of the transition committees, which means the tenure of the chairmen of the transition committees, the councillors and the supervisors have come to an end.

“I appreciate the transition committees for the leadership they provided in the councils in the last two years and a month.

“Everything considered, I am convinced that the chairmen have impacted in various ways on the life of the people in their respective local governments.

“I have seen schools, health centres, street lights and other projects that were executed by the caretaker committees. When I look at the score cards of the transition committee chairmen and compare them with those of their predecessors, who were elected, I believe these set of chairmen have done better.

“But as they say, there is time for everything, and by the nature of caretaker leadership, there is no defined tenure of office. It is meant to be a stop gap depending on when elections are conducted.

“Now that we have cleared the coast, we are sorting out the remaining legal issues regarding the State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSEIC) and we believe over the next few months, council polls would be conducted.

“But before then, we have asked the transition committee chairmen to hand over the affairs of the councils to the Heads of Service.”

Warning the Heads of Service not to act as sole administrators, Oshiomhole said: “If there are specific developments that require action, those developments would be discussed and specific approvals would be given. “Ensure you have approval for anything you want to do in black and white to avoid misconception. Our instruction is not that you should go and pay contractors. You must give priority to the payment of accumulated salary.”

  • NBA inaugurates committees tomorrow

THE Nigerian Bar Association NBA will tomorrow, at its secretariat, Abuja, inaugurate three committees to fast-rack the activities and programmes of the Okey Wali (SAN) administration.

The committees to be inaugurated are the Legislative Advocacy working Group (LAWG) which has Mr Paul Erokoro (SAN) as the chairman and Arthur Obi Okafor (SAN) as alternate chairman.

The committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution has the former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Edo State, Charles Edosomwan (SAN) as chairman while Chief Augustine Alegeh (SAN) retains his chairmanship of the Data Base Committee.

In a telephone chat with The Nation, Wali said it has become imperative to inaugurate the aforementioned committees because of the urgent demand for their activities.

He said the constitution is under review and the participation of the NBA in the process cannot be over-emphasised.

Wali said the need to inaugurate the Data Base Committee was based on the fact that we need to know exactly how many we are and who is where, so that we accurately plan, budget and implement programmes and policies that will positively affect everybody.
