Jonathan meets Commonwealth, AU, ECOWAS polls’ monitors

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday met briefly behind closed-doors with elections monitoring groups from the Commonwealth, the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Among those in the team were ex-Ghanaian President John Kuffour; former Liberian President Amos Sawyer as well as ex-Malawian President and Head of Commonwealth Election Observer Dr. Bakili Muluzi.

Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Kuffour said the group came to give an interim report to the President.

Stressing that the elections were peaceful, he urged the electorate to continue to remain calm after the results are announced.

He said: “President Muluzi, former president of Malawi, led the Commonwealth team; President Sawyer, former President of Liberia, led the African Union team; and myself, former president of Ghana, led the ECOWAS team.

“We have been in the country with our groups. I’m sure you heard from some of us yesterday (Sunday) that the elections have been peaceful, transparent and credible up to yesterday.

“We appreciate the processes not yet done till the results are declared; then of course, the aftermath of the declaration. But we have come this far and we wanted to give an interim report to the authorities that mandated us to come and to the world and to Nigerians in particular; to let everybody know that Nigeria has been at peace with the process.

“And so, we appeal to Nigeria to continue in this mood throughout the process. So that at the end of the day, the people of Nigeria will be satisfied with themselves that they use the process to get the government they want and they deserve.”

He went on: “Nigeria succeeding will be not only in favour of Nigeria, but to West Africa and to the continent. We will all be made proud of the success here achieved by Nigerians for themselves and for all of us.

“Well, at this point, some of us will go back to our homes and we couldn’t go without coming to the State House, to the President and the Vice President for the good work they have done. Because it is under their watch that these peaceful, transparent and credible elections have been happening and it is natural they are congratulated for the work done so far.

“So, that is why we came to pay respect to the President, his deputy; more or less to ask leave to go. Of course, leaving the rest of our observer team behind to see through the process, hoping it will reach successful conclusions so they can make final reports to the world.”

Toriola’s Commonwealth rally adjudged best in 2014

The exceptional rally between Nigeria’s Segun Toriola and Singapore’s Gao Ning at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland has been adjudged the best by American-based sports media, SportsNet.

The rally was all over the globe and the Chairman, International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Adham Sharara, who analysed the Top-100 plays of the year on America-based SportsNet made this known.

“My particular interest is to watch the Top-100 Sports Plays as shown by a network called SportsNet and I also like the top plays by ESPN. I particularly also enjoy the Top-100 “Sports Bloopers”. These are “misses”, own goals, terrible mistakes, funny incidents, etc. Of course the most amazing on SportsNet are the Top-10 plays of the year. These are really something to watch and admire the skills and abilities of top sport stars,” he said.

The erstwhile ITTF President added: “Then I watched the Top-100 plays of the year and saw some amazing plays. Some of these athletes have incredible abilities. Again, the bulk of the plays were in the traditional North-American professional sports. Some amazing “catches” in American Football, some amazing “throws” in Baseball, some amazing “dunks” in Basketball, and some incredible “stick-play” in Ice Hockey, and some fantastic scoring in Soccer.

“Lo and behold, to my amazement, for play number 3, I mean in the top 3 of all 100 plays of the year, was a long rally in table tennis. I was stunned. Table tennis made it to the top 3? I could not believe my eyes. It was truly an amazing rally between Segun Toriola of Nigeria and Gao Ning of Singapore in a semi-final team match at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. It was what seemed like an endless rally. To the experts in our sport this may not be the best table tennis point of the year, but to the TV producers, and I suppose based on what they saw, this was the best rally in table tennis for 2014, and one of the top 3 best sports play of the year.”

Sharara believes this was a plus to table tennis globally, while charging the ITTF board presided over by German Thomas Weikert to continue to promote the sport globally.

  • 19th African Senior Athletics Championships, Morocco: Can Nigeria dominate the continent again?

19th African Senior Athletics Championships, Morocco: Can Nigeria dominate the continent again?

Team Nigeria is presently basking in the euphoria of a successful outing at the concluded 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow Scotland.

From creating records to producing new talents, the list seems endless as Nigeria hopes to retain the coveted crown won at the 2012 African Championships held in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic. It remains to be seen whether Nigeria athletes will live up to their billings as the defending champions of the event.

However, the country anticipates that her queen of the tracks, Blessing Okagbare, who won two gold medals and a silver medal in Glasgow would continue with the outpour of medals. In Glasgow, Blessing Okagbare broke the Commonwealth Games while power lifters even broke world records. So it was indeed a huge achievement for Team Nigeria in Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Thirty Nigerian athletes left for  Morocco in batches while the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria(AFN), Solomon Ogba had departed the shores of the country on Friday to Marrakesh to oversee the affairs of the team. Okagbare had convincingly proven her critics wrong when she ran effortlessly to create a new record of 10.85secs at the Games  to emerge as the new record holder of the women’s 100m  at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held  in Glasgow, Scotland.

Okagabare broke Debbie Ferguson’s 12-year record of 10.91 secs. But on another note, few had felt that Okagbare did not have a strong contender in her regular rivals, the Jamaicans who were conspicuously missing at the Games. However athletics buffs were quick to point out that Veronica Campbell did give a good account of herself having run 11.03 secs which was thwarted by Okagbare.

Many were of the opinion that if   Okagbare’s strongest rival, Shirley Ann Frazer pryce had been in attendance, it would still have been no one’s game . At the end of the race, Okagbare proved her dominance on the tracks as she broke a 12-year-old record.

However, at the last Africa championships held in Benin Republic, two years ago, five hundred and sixty-nine athletes from forty-seven African countries had taken part in forty-four events, Okagbare had managed a silver medal owing to injuries sustained. Rudy Zang Milama of Gabon claimed the gold  medal in a time of 11.16secs. In the 200m race, Ivory Coast’s Marie Jose Ta Lou had been crowned the queen of the 200m race in a time of 23.44secs.

It is expected that that this time around, Okagbare should crown all her efforts with the ability to dominate  the African scene by outpacing her African rivals by winning all her races and  possibly create new records on the continent.

In the men’s category, this might prove to be difficult as the country’s male athletes have failed to find their rhythm on the tracks. Would they be able to salvage the little pride left of them on the tracks? It is no news that they have failed to hug success in recent time. Mark Jelks seem to be the only hope for the country. But Coach Saheed Akinpelu, who gives coaching tutorials to most of the country’s  quatermilers, chances that any African country will beat Nigeria is very remote. He was of the opinion that  competition for medals will be tough, especially since this edition of the African Championships also serves as trials for the money spinning IAAF World Cup. The competition will also serve  as preparation to African athletes for the next intercontinental cup which is planned on 13 and 14 September 2014 in Marrakech.

The newest kid on the block, Ese Brume is expected to lift the train in the jumps considering her achievement at the just concluded Commonwealth Games just as Tosin Oke is expected to achieve a greater feat at the championships as the defending champion of the African championships in triple jumps just as Sade Abugan is expected to do the contry proud in the 400m race. Abugan does not have a strong contender this time around as her hottest rival is currently on suspension for drug related offence.

Nigerian coaches are indeed optimistic that most of the medals will come from sprints, relays, jumps, hurdles, quatermiles and throws.

At the 2012 Athletics championship held Porto Novo, Benin Republic, Nigeria had topped the medals table with ten gold, six silver and five bronze medals while Kenya was first runners up with nine gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals. South Africa clinched the third position with six gold, ten silver and eight bronze medals.

2014 Commonwealth Games: Para-athletics, Wrestling, Shooting hit Glasgow today

Nigerian teams will start jetting in into Glasgow, Scotland venue of this year’s Commonwealth Games as from today as three teams  –  para-athletics, wrestling and shooting  –  are being expected in Glasgow for the Games that will commence on Wednesday.

An influential member of the advanced team of the National Sports Commission (NSC) who is also the Special Assistant on Technical Matters to the Director-General of the NSC, Mary Onyali said the advanced team have been working very hard to ensure that adequate arrangement was made for the Nigerian contingent for the Games to have a hitch free participation in the competition.

She also disclosed that the sports federations have confirmed their arrival for today and tomorrow in Glasgow.

“Three teams are expected to hit Glasgow tomorrow (today) and they are para-athletics, wrestling and shooting. We have been working day and night here in Glasgow around the clock making sure that the facilities are ready for the expected Nigerian contingent and also for the athletes to be well received. I would say it’s been so far so good.

“We have been working inside the venues to ensure that all facilities are intact. Also we are ready to receive the athletes and their officials as they come in to give them orientation tours as to where they are expected to hold their events such as venues for their training and competition . We are ready to give each team as they come a familiarisation tour for them to know the venues and programmes of their events too.

“The organisational aspect of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has been wonderful. The organisers have put in a lot of hard work to ensure  it comes out successful and fulfilling too. They have worked hard to ensure that the environment is conducive for the athletes to give out their best performance in the Games.

“Everything is centered around the Village. Everything is within five to 10 minutes walking distance as far as facilities is concerned. So the environment is quite friendly and conducive for the (Nigerian) athletes to perform well”, Onyali assured.

Commonwealth Games journalists upset by charge for information

Reporters are  complaining that  Commonwealth Games organisers want them to pay to obtain “basic preview information”, reports the Sports Journalists’ Association  (SJA).

On the eve of the event in Glasgow, the journalists say they must pay £70 plus VAT to access “simple details such as competition timetables and athlete entries.”

The so-called GamesINFO also includes biographies, historical results, transportation details, weather reports and, during the Games, results and athlete quotes.

The editor of Athletics Weekly, Jason Henderson, is quoted as saying: “I was shocked when Glasgow 2014 told me that I had to pay £84 just to see a track and field timetable.

“We usually run the timetable – which is the most basic piece of information – in our preview issue for the Games, but I was directed toward the rate card team and encouraged to sign up to myGamesINFO.”

  • 2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES: 127 athletes to represent Nigeria in Glasgow

2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES: 127 athletes to represent Nigeria in Glasgow

A total number of 127 athletes (65 male and 62 female) will represent Nigeria at the 2014 Commonwealth Games scheduled to hold in Glasgow, Scotland from 23rd July – 3rd August 2014.

Team Nigeria will feature in eight sports (Athletics, Boxing, Shooting, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Table Tennis, Para Athletics and Para Power lifting) at 20th edition of the Games.

Athletics produce the highest number with 46 athletes (22 male, 24 female) followed by Weightlifting with 16 athletes (8 male, 7 female). Shooting has 15 athletes (9 male and 7 female) while wrestling will be represented by 14 athletes (7male, 7female).

Further breakdown shows Boxing to be presenting 11 athletes (8 male, 3 female) with Table Tennis having 10 athletes (5 male, 5 female).  Para Athletics has 9 athletes (3 male, 6 female), while Para-Power lifting presented the least with 6 athletes (3 male, 3 female).

The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Tunde Popoola, who confirmed the numbers to SportingLife on telephone yesterday, said the last batch of athletes are expected to  travel for the Games by the end of the day.

“The reason the athletes are leaving in batches is based on the availability of flight and secondly the training programme of different federations, but the end of today (Thursday) all the athletes would have left the country for Glasgow except one or two who are having issues concerning their visas which we have sorted out already. After they collect their passports, they will be on the way and we’ll assume everybody is gone. Some essential officials have already gone with the athletes and others will join them later.”

Popoola however believes that with hard work and luck the athletes can improve on the 10 gold, 8 silver and 14 bronze medals they won at the last edition in Delhi, India.

“For me, I believe we can achieve more than what we recorded in 2010 since we are focusing and competing in sports we are  are good in.  The athletes have been working hard and I pray luck is on our side this time around,” Popoola said.

The discussion session, which was coordinated by Bankole Thelma a teacher in the school threw light on the standard of living in the country as well as the need for Nigerians to be united in the search for progress in education, security, health and agriculture, among others.

One of the participants June Olu, said Nigeria would only improve if there is a concerted effort.
